Abstract:Pulp fiber surface chemistry is an interesting research area that affected the paper strength properties. In this paper, paper strength and fiber surface properties from mechanical pulps of Masson pine and Eucalyptus, two typical woods for papermaking in South China, were investigated. Effects of treatment on paper strength properties were studied for both mechanical pulps. Fiber surface properties of mechanical pulps after treatment were analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). AFM images revealed the distribution of the chemical composition on fiber Surface after treatment; moreover, XPS analyzed the chemical composition on fiber Surface based on the O/C atomic ratio. Results showed that with the increasing of the dosage of alkaline, the paper sheet's strength improved, the O/C ratio on the fiber surface increased and the peak area of C I decreased as the alkali also reached a higher level. This paper indicated that there were less lignin and extractives and more carbohydrate on the fiber surface as the alkali dosage increased, and AFM surface topography analysis also proved this viewpoint. Results showed that paper strength properties were greatly influenced by the chemical composition on fiber surface.
