Abstract:This paper focuses on a liquid-phase CO2 hydrogenation process for methanol synthesis to enhance CO2 conversion. The feasibility of a liquid-phase CO2 hydrogenation process is comprehensively evaluated through a techno-economic analysis. The solvent tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether is identified as one of the most favorable options following an analysis of the solubility data pertaining to various solvents and their influence on the reaction equilibrium of the substances within the system. The influence of process parameters, including temperature, pressure, solvent amount, and gas hourly space velocity (GHSV), on the conversion of CO2 and the selectivity for methanol is examined and optimized in a liquid-phase CO2 hydrogenation to methanol process without a gas recycle (Process 1), optimal reaction conditions are determined and a CO2 conversion of 95.19 % and a CH3OH yield of 94.77 % with a purity of 99.9 % are achieved. A liquid-phase process with a gas recycle (Process 2) is implemented to enhance the utilization of feed gas, achieving a CO2 conversion rate of 95.23 % and a methanol yield of 99.69 %. The liquid-phase process is further optimized by incorporating reactive distillation technology (Process 3), to enhance reaction efficiency and reduce energy consumption. Following the techno-economic evaluation, the energy efficiency of Process 3 is 7.79 % and 4.99 % higher than that of Process 1 and Process 2, respectively. The product cost of Process 3 is reduced by 8.75 % compared to Process 1 and by 4.25 % compared to Process 2. This research offers insights into the challenges associated with the development of the liquid-phase method.

Abstract:A new process for 2-(2-dimethylaminoethoxy) ethanol synthesis via reaction of ethylene oxide and dimethyl amine was developed, which also produced 2-dimethylaminoethanol as a byproduct. Effects of reaction temperature, reaction pressure, molar ratio of ethylene oxide to dimethyl amine and solvent on product distribution were studied. Under optimized conditions of n(C2H7N):n(C2H4O)=1:1~2, 80℃ and 1.2MPa, the conversion of dimethyl amine is over 95% and the conversion of ethylene oxide is over 80%. The weight ratio of 2-(2-dimethylaminoethoxy) ethanol to 2-dimethylaminoethanol is in the range of 0~4, which increases with the increase of molar ratio between ethylene oxide and dimethyl amine. Therefore, the product distribution can be controlled by changing molar ratio of reactants.

Abstract:Dimethyl ether carbonylation to methyl acetate was comparatively investigated over mordenite supported copper (Cu/HMOR) catalysts prepared by different methods including evaporation, urea hydrolysis, incipient wetness impregnation and ion-exchange. The results showed that Cu/HMOR prepared via iron-exchange method exhibited the highest catalytic activity due to the synergistic effect of active-site metal and acidic molecular sieve support. Conversion of 95.3% and methyl acetate selectivity of 94.9% were achieved under conditions of 210 °C, 1.5 MPa, and GSHV of 4883 h−1. The catalysts were characterized by nitrogen absorption, X-ray diffraction, NH3 temperature program desorption, and CO temperature program desorption techniques. It was found that Cu/HMOR prepared by ion-exchange method possessed high surface area, moderate strong acid centers, and CO adsorption centers, which improved catalytic performance for the reaction of CO insertion to dimethyl ether.

Abstract:Dimethyl ether (DME) has received growing attention due to its potential use as a multi-purpose fuel. A new technical route of improved two step synthesis is proposed for DME production, which is composed of methanol synthesis and methanol dehydration in a fixed-bed reactor. The influences of the operating conditions including reaction pressure, temperature, H2/CO mole ratio in the syngas and space velocity on CO conversion, selectivity and yield of DME are investigated. CO conversion and DME yield both increase monotonically with the pressure increase. The optimal reaction temperatures for the synthesis and dehydration of methanol are different. CO conversion increases at first and keeps constant when the H2/CO mole ratio is above 2. DME yield increases obviously and then decreases gradually with the space velocity increase. The optimal conditions are obtained to maximize the CO conversion and DME selectivity. The reaction temperatures of the top and bottom stage are in the range of 270–280 °C and 235–245 °C, respectively. The optimal ratio of H2/CO is above 2, and the space velocity is in the range of 1000–1300 h−1.

Abstract:The direct conversion of syngas to methyl acetate (MA) via dimethyl ether (DME) was carried out in a combined fixed/fluidized bed reactor. Two catalysts were used in this study: Cu–ZnO–Al 2 O 3 (CZA) and spray-dried ferrierite zeolite (SPD–FER). DME was synthesized with syngas to DME under CZA and SPD–FER, while DME carbonylation—i.e., that of DME to MA—proceeded with SPD–FER. DME synthesis was conducted in a fixed bed located at the bottom whereas DME carbonylation was conducted in a fluidized bed located at the top. As the space velocity increased, the X CO decreased, since the flow regime changed from particulate regime to bubbling regime, thus affecting attrition and the increase in the deactivation rate. Since the synthesis of DME from the syngas reaction is a mole reduced reaction, the regime transition occurred at a greater than predicted space velocity. When the molar fraction of CO increased, the X CO decreased whereas the X DME increased by approximately 50 %. Compared to the combined fixed/fixed bed results, the X CO and X DME both increased in the combined fixed/fluidized bed reactor. Lastly, the deactivation rate was higher in the combined fixed/fluidized bed than it was in the fixed/fixed bed.

Abstract:Gas-phase methanol carbonylation over HMOR catalyst was investigated for the synthesis of dimethyl ether (DME) and acetic acid (HOAc). The results revealed that the selectivity of DME reached 98% and the methanol conversion was 45% under the reaction temperature of 493K. While, the selectivity of HOAc was 30% and the methanol conversion reached 80% when reaction temperature was increased to 573K. TEM, SEM, XRD, N2 physisorbtion, XPS and TG-DTG measurements were performed to characterize the texture and structure of the catalyst. Serious coking on the catalyst surface significantly limited the utilization of unmodified HMOR catalyst in the reaction.

Abstract:In terms of the mechanisms of methanol synthesis from synthesis gas and methanol dehydration, it was predicted that the yield of dimethyl ether (DME) would be greatly increased if the inter-dispersion of the oxide particles in the catalyst was enhanced. For comparison, 4 methods-- bi-hydrolysis precipitation and three other methods were used to prepare the catalysts: (1) Low-dispersion mixing: A commercial Cu/Zn/Al methanol catalyst having a size range of 20--40 mesh was mechanically mixed with a dehydration catalyst {gamma}-alumina with the same size range; (2) High-dispersion mixing: The two catalysts used in 1 were ground together to {minus}200 mesh and pelletized and then crushed to 20--40 mesh; (3) Co-precipitation impregnation as reported in a cited reference; (4) Bi-hydrolysis precipitation: An aqueous solution of mixed nitrates of copper and zinc and an aqueous solution of NaAlO{sub 2} were simultaneously dropped into a beaker containing some deionized water. A precipitate was formed which was filtered, washed, dried and calcined. The particle size of the catalysts prepared by methods 3 and 4 charged into the reactor were in the same range as those by methods 1 and 2. Catalysts prepared by methods 1, 2, 3 and 4 are designated as Cat-1, Cat-2, Cat-3more » and Cat-4 respectively. The inter-dispersion of the oxides particles were in the order of Cat-1 < Cat-2 < Cat-3 < Cat-4. The catalysts were evaluated for activity in a tubular flow reactor with a feed having a mole composition of H{sub 2}/CO/CO{sub 2} = 64/31/5 under 270 C, 3 MPa and a space velocity of 2000 h{sup {minus}1}. Abstract:The hydrogenation of dimethyl oxalate(DMO) for the producing of C2-C4 alcohols with methanol as solvent was researched at the temperature of 270 °C to 310 °C. Ethylene glycol(EG) was the main product at low temperature and the selectivity of which was 61.9% at 230 °C. However, EG selectivity decreased sharply with the increase of temperature while ethanol became the main liquid products with the selectivity of 43.5% at 270 °C. It can be ascribed to a thorough hydrogenation of DMO at a high temperature. In addition, the promotion of Guerbet reaction led to the production of propanol and butanol. Simultaneously, the amount of gas products including CO, CO 2 and dimethyl ether(DME) also increased, which became a competition factor in the conversion of DMO to liquid products including C2-C4 alcohols. The blank test was carried out with pure methanol as feedstock with and without Cu/SiO 2 catalyst, which revealed that methanol was involved in the formation of gas products and higher alcohols on Cu-based catalyst, and the main gas product was CO.

Abstract:Ethanol was synthesized by using methyl acetate as raw material,and copper-based catalyst (Cu-Zn-Al) was utilized in the hydrogenation process,products were analyzed qualitatively, quantitatively via gas chromatograph. The effects of reaction temperature,reaction pressure,the liquid hourly space velocity(LHSV) of methyl acetate,the molar ratio of hydrogen and methyl acetate and other factors on the conversion rate of feed methyl acetate and the selectivity of target product of ethanol were investigated respectively. The experimental results indicate that the optimal operating parameters are temperature of 240℃,pressure of 8MPa,LHSV of 1h?1,ratio of hydrogen and methyl acetate of 9∶1. Under the optimal condition,the conversion rate of methyl acetate is 95.5%,the selectivity of product ethanol is 94.6%. The equilibrium composition of liquid product is that methanol 38.12%,ethanol 59.52%,methyl acetate 0.86%,and ethyl acetate 1.29%. As is shown by data that Cu-Zn-Al catalyst possesses high activity on carbonyl hydrogenation and good selectivity for ethanol, moreover it can inhibit the production of ethyl acetate.
Intensification and performance assessment of ethanol production process by hydrogenation of methyl acetate

Abstract:Fuel ethanol has attracted wide attention due to its advantages of environmental friendliness, high octane number, and excellent explosion resistance. In this paper, the design and intensification for the ethanol production process by hydrogenation of methyl acetate is developed. The conventional process containing reaction units and separation units is established. The separation units are optimized upon minimum the total annual cost (TAC). Subsequently, the dividing wall column (DWC) and extractive dividing wall column (EDWC) techniques are applied to obtain the DWC-EDWC intensified process. The results show that the TAC, CO 2 emissions, and total energy consumption (TEC) of the DWC-EDWC intensified process are reduced by 9.4%, 14.9%, and 28.7%, respectively. To further improve thermodynamic efficiency, the DWC-EDWC with intermediate reboiler (DWC-IR-EDWC) intensified process is proposed. It is indicated that the DWC-IR-EDWC intensified process has more advantages in the economy. Finally, pinch technology is carried out to make full use of the heat of process streams. Compared with the conventional process, the TAC, CO 2 emissions, and TEC of the modified process with heat exchange networks (HENs) are reduced by 23.7%, 29.3%, 65.4%, respectively, and the thermodynamic efficiency is increased by 9.1%. Abstract:The direct dimethyl ether (DME) synthesis reaction via CO2 hydrogenation typically requires a bifunctional catalyst that effectively combines a methanol synthesis catalyst with a methanol dehydration catalyst, but the effect of the relationship between the two catalysts on the catalytic performance has not been as well studied. In this study, we developed a CuZnZr/Al–S(10)-PG bifunctional catalyst physically mixed with Al-modified SBA-15 and the traditional CuZnZr catalyst for the hydrogenation of CO2 to DME. A pivotal discovery is that the modulation of interaction intensity between these two constituents significantly influences the electronic configuration of each component. Through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization and methanol dehydration experiments, it was confirmed that diminishing the synergistic interplay between CuZnZr and Al-modified SBA-15, which regulated the electronic structure of the Cu–Zn interface and enhanced the Cu–Zn interfacial interaction, played a crucial role in enhancing the catalyst’s performance in CO2 hydrogenation to DME. This finding contests established beliefs about the necessity of strong synergistic interactions in such systems and provides new insights for designing rational bifunctional catalysts.

Abstract:A core‐shell catalyst is used to promote the reaction performance of the carbonylation of dimethyl ether to ethanol. The core‐shell structure enhances the synergy between the carbonylation and hydrogenation reactions, and the porogen modification optimizes the pore structure of MOR zeolite to further enhance the ethanol selectivity. This study investigates the one‐step ethanol synthesis from dimethyl ether and syngas using the catalysts combining Cu/ZnO oxides and modified Cu‐MOR zeolite. In addition to physically mixed two‐component catalysts, multifunctional catalysts featuring a Cu/ZnO core and modified zeolite (Cu‐MOR and HMOR) shell are also presented. Further, the porogenic agent of dihexadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DHAB) was involved in the synthesis process of the MOR zeolite components of Cu/ZnO@Cu‐MOR and Cu/ZnO/Cu‐MOR catalysts, but not in that of Cu/ZnO@Cu‐MOR° catalyst. A series of characterization measures including XRD, TGA, BET, SEM, TEM and EDS have been systematically studied on the prepared catalysts. Characterizations of the catalyst surface structure and texturing parameters revealed a disturbance in crystallinity upon Cu insertion, facilitating syngas separation and promoting DME carbonylation while preventing undesired CO hydrogenation. The addition of DHAB as a porogen in the synthesis of zeolite shell improved specific surface area and porosity of zeolite shell, and reduced coke deposition, without leaching active metal components, resulting in enhanced reaction properties. Cu/ZnO@Cu‐MOR core‐shell catalyst showed good performance with 28.9 % DME conversion and 43.8 % selectivity for ethanol. The optimized pore structure and enhanced catalytic performance of the modification process validate the effectiveness and efficiency of this strategy.

Abstract:The kinetics for one-step synthesis of dimethyl ether(DME) from syngas over a Cu-Zn-Al bi-functional catalyst prepared by a complete liquid-phase preparation method was investigated in an agitated slurry reactor.Assuming the reaction includes two steps: the first step is methanol synthesis from syngas and the second step is methanol dehydration to DME,different kinetic models were established respectively according to different intermediates and rate determining steps.These models were calculated with the equilibrium concentration of the reactant in stead of fugacity.A good agreement between the experimental and the calculated results of the chosen model validates the Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic formation as an appropriate tool for describing the process on catalyst surface.The numerical values of parameters indicate that one of the reasons for better catalytic stability in the slurry reactor is weak adsorption of CO2 on the surface of the catalyst.

Abstract:Ethanol was directly synthesized from dimethyl ether (DME) and syngas with the combined H-Mordenite and Cu/ZnO catalysts that were separately loaded in a dual-catalyst bed reactor. Methyl acetate (MA) was formed by DME carbonylation over the H-Mordenite catalyst. Thereafter, ethanol and methanol were produced by MA hydrogenation over the Cu/ZnO catalyst. With the reactant gas containing 1.0% DME, the optimized temperature for the reaction was at 493 K to reach 100% conversion. In the products, the yield of methanol and ethanol could reach 46.3% and 42.2%, respectively, with a small amount of MA, ethyl acetate, and CO(2). This process is environmentally friendly as the main byproduct methanol can be recycled to DME by a dehydration reaction. In contrast, for the physically mixed catalysts, the low conversion of DME and high selectivity of methanol were observed.

Abstract:Thermodynamic analysis was carried out for the reaction system of dimethyl ether synthesis by CO and/or CO2 hydrogenation.The equilibrium yields of dimethyl ether were calculated for different initial feed gas compositions,temperature and pressure.The results showed that the equilibrium yield of dimethyl ether decreased with the increase of temperature,and increased with the increase of pressure or CO/(CO+CO2) molar ratio.The thermodynamic data for methanol synthesis by CO/CO2 mixed gas hydrogenation were also calculated out for comparison.
Direct Conversion of Syngas into Methyl Acetate, Ethanol and Ethylene by Relay Catalysis via Dimethyl Ether Intermediate.

Abstract:Selective conversion of syngas (CO/H-2) into C2+ oxygenates is a highly attractive but challenging target. Herein, we report the direct conversion of syngas into methyl acetate (MA) by relay catalysis. MA can be formed at a lower temperature (ca. 473K) using Cu-Zn-Al oxide/H-ZSM-5 and zeolite mordenite (H-MOR) catalysts separated by quartz wool (denoted as Cu-Zn-Al/H-ZSM-5 vertical bar H-MOR) and also at higher temperatures (603-643K) without significant deactivation using spinel-structured ZnAl2O4 vertical bar H-MOR. The selectivity of MA and acetic acid (AA) reaches 87% at a CO conversion of 11% at 643K. Dimethyl ether (DME) is the key intermediate and the carbonylation of DME results in MA with high selectivity. We found that the relay catalysis using ZnAl2O4 vertical bar H-MOR vertical bar ZnAl2O4 gives ethanol as the major product, while ethylene is formed with a layer-by-layer ZnAl2O4 vertical bar H-MOR vertical bar ZnAl2O4 vertical bar H-MOR combination. Close proximity between ZnAl2O4 and H-MOR increases ethylene selectivity to 65%.

Abstract:Methyl acetate (MA) hydrogenation to ethanol was investigated over SBA-15 supported copper (Cu/SBA-15) catalysts prepared by different methods, including impregnation, deposition precipitation, and homogeneous deposition precipitation. The catalysts were characterized by means of the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, temperature-programmed reduction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Of the three catalysts, it was found that the Cu/SBA-15 catalyst prepared by the homogeneous deposition precipitation method has the smallest particle size, and the appropriate Cu+/(Cu+ + Cu-0) molar ratio of 53.5%. The high dispersion of the active components, and the synergetic effect between Cu-0 and Cu+ contributed to the high activity of Cu/SBA-15 prepared via the homogeneous deposition precipitation method. A MA conversion of 93.6% with an ethanol selectivity of 98.5% was obtained for MA hydrogenation in methanol solution under mild reaction conditions. Both of these values were much higher than those obtained over catalysts prepared by the other two methods. The catalyst still maintained good performance in the co-hydrogenation of acetic acid and MA in methanol solution. A high MA conversion of 99.5% and an ethanol selectivity of 99.5% were obtained for pure MA hydrogenation over the best catalyst. It was found that methanol solution inhibited the conversion of MA, and suppressed the side reaction of MA trans-esterification with the product ethanol at higher LHSV.
Catalysis for One-step Synthesis of Dimethyl Ether from Hydrogenation of CO

Abstract:In this paper, a new catalyst system Cu-Mn-(M)/γ-Al2O3 was developed for the directly synthesis dimethyl ether (DME) from synthesis gas in a fixed-bed reactor. The catalysts with different n (Cu) : n (Mn) ratios, several promoter M (M is one of Zn, Cr, W, Mo, Fe, Co or Ni) were prepared and tested. The results showed the catalysts have a high conversion of CO and a high DME selectivity. The DME yield in tail gas reached 46.0% (at 63.27% conversion of CO) at 2.0 MPa, 275°C, 1500 h−1 with the Cu2Mn4Zn/γ-Al2O3 catalyst.

Abstract:A CuO-ZnO-Al2O3-ZrO2 + HZSM-5 physical mixture bifunctional catalyst with a high activity for dimethy ether (DME) synthesis was used for CO2 hydrogenation. Various factors that affect catalyst activity, including the reaction temperature, pressure, and space velocity, were investigated. CO2 conversion reached 0.309, and DME and methanol yields were 0.212 and 0.059 with a stoichiometric ratio of H-2 to CO2 of 3 at 523 K, 5 MPa, and a space velocity of 6000 mL/(g cat-h). Well-studied kinetic models for methanol synthesis and methanol dehydration, respectively, were used to fit the experimental data and the kinetic parameters in the rate equations for DME synthesis were obtained by regression. A simulated process for CO2 hydrogenation indicated that a higher DME yield can be obtained with CO recycle that will also give a CO-free product.

Abstract:The variation of the supports on the Cu/SiO2 catalyst plays an important role in the catalytic performance for hydrogenation of dimethyl oxalate. The loss of silica in the form of tetramethoxysilane from the support under the reaction conditions is responsible for the deactivation of the Cu/SiO2 catalyst.
