Abstract:The composite insulator is a kind of new insulator developed in the mid 1960s. The faults of the composite insulator have been divided into three kinds including bird streamer flashover, lightning flashover and contamination flashover. The bird streamer is the main fault source that happens during the dynamic defecation processing of birds at dawn. But on the basis of experiments, it is proved that some flashover at dawn is due to the uniform distribution voltage. The dry high voltage part of the composite insulator bears relatively high voltage. When salt solution with different concentration, equal to different parallel resistance, was imbrued on the composite surface nearest to the power line, the distributed voltage of the whole composite insulator would change. The voltages of sheds near the power line increase more than the others. Therefore long-term effect under such conditions induces partial flashover, even power fault. Finally it is suggested that the high voltage part of the composite insulator should be improved

Abstract:The faults of composite insulator have been divided into three kinds including pollution flashover, lightening flashover and reason unknown flashover. Some flashovers have occurred in the field but the mechanism of flashover is still unknown. This paper presents experimental results of flashover of polymer insulators caused by foreign bodies. It was found that the nonuniform voltage distribution and the dropping down foreign bodies may cause flashovers. In this paper, in addition to experiments, the voltage distribution is analyzed using the finite element method. The factors influenced the flashover phenomenon is thus studied.

Abstract:The electric strength of composite insulation system is always determined by the surface flashover phenomena of its insulating materials,which greatly limits the overall performance of many electrical and electronic systems.The state-of-the-art of flashover across solid insulation in vacuum is reviewed.It is considered as a kind of complex interface(the boundary of electrode and material)and surface(the surface of material)physical phenomena occurred under high electric field.Essentially flashover process reveals the charge behaviors under high field,consisting of two processes,i.e.,the bulk(inside surface layer of a material)and outside(on and above surface of a material)processes.It is needed to synthetically consider the influential factors such as relative permittivity,electric resistivity,secondary electron emission behavior and surface trap distribution of insulation,henceforth to propose the general evaluation system for characterizing and mending flashover characteristics,and to ultimately understand new physical phenomena and efficiently control them.
Pollution Flashover Characteristic of Composite Insulator with Non-uniform Hydrophobicity Distribution on Surfaces

Abstract:Considering the non-uniform distribution of hydrophobicity along composite insulator surface which may occur in field operation,we simulated seven typical distributions of hydrophobicity on composite insulator surfaces in lab.Then we expermentally investigated the simulated insulators with different hydrophobicity conditions using up-and-down method.Meanwhile,arc shape variations synchronized with voltage and current changing were recorded by a high speed camera.When the ratio of continuous hydrophobic area reaches 33％,the flashover voltage drops by more than 14.4％ under the value of hydrophilic flashover voltage.Moreover,the hydrophobicity of bottom surface of insulator is the determinative factor to pollution flashover.Among the seven hydrophobicity conditions,each flashover voltage and discharge characteristic of insulator varies from each other distinctly.Results show that the wetting process reflected by leakage current variation can be classified as hydrophilic group and hydrophobic group,and the flashover can be divided into synchronous and asynchronous flashover,which is the main reason of flashover sharply dropping.For composite insulator in operation,when the ratio of continuous hydrophobic area is lower than certain value,the influence of non-uniform hydrophobicitydistribution on pollution flashover voltage must be taken into consideration.Meanwhile,hydrophobicity of bottom surface should be focused onin operation,which is one of the most important parameters in evaluation of pollution flashover withstanding performance.

Abstract:In ultra-high voltage converter stations, the phenomenon of flashover along the outer insulation of dry hollow reactors made of epoxy/glass fiber composites poses a potential threat to the stability of the power system. To enhance its flashover performance under varying complex conditions, it is necessary to conduct in-depth research on the flashover mechanism of this material under different voltage forms. This study conducted tests on the flashover voltage, surface space charge distribution, and partial discharge parameters under varying AC-DC ratios and AC frequencies, and exploring their relationships. The results show that the DC content in the AC-DC ratio decreases, the flashover voltage decreases, the apparent total discharge of partial discharges increases, and the maximum surface space charge density decreases. The main influencing factor is the increase in the number of seed charges involved in gas ionization. Increasing the AC frequency, the flashover voltage decreases, the apparent total discharge increases significantly, and the surface charge density remains basically unchanged. The main reason is that the change in the number of alternating cycles further increases the number of seed charges. This study reveals the flashover mechanism of epoxy/glass fiber composites under different voltage forms, which provides theoretical support for subsequent material modification.

Abstract:In this paper, the influence of surface charges is quantitatively analyzed based on the study of surface charge distribution under DC voltage and flashover characteristics of insulators under superimposed voltage of DC and lightning impulse. It is found that when DC and impulse voltage are in the same polarity, surface charges weaken the electric field along the insulator surface and flashover voltages under superimposed voltage increases. When DC and impulse are in the opposite polarity, surface charges enhance the electric field along the insulator surface, and flashover voltages will decrease. The calculation results of the electric field along the flashover path show that the changing rate of the maximum field strength is approximately equal to the changing rate of flashover voltage, which proves that the influence of surface charges on flashover characteristics of insulators mainly depends on their distortion of the electric field.

Abstract:In order to reveal the mechanism of discharge on icing insulators,the flashover process during ice-melting period of polluted and ice-covered insulator string was experimentally studied.Arc development,evolution of leakage current and its frequency representation were analyzed typically.The results indicate that the flashover process can be divided into five stages,namely,initial stage,intermittence local arc stage,arc propagation stage,critical flashover stage and flashover stage.Each stage has distinct discharge phenomenon and a fixed level of leakage current peak value.Both the nonlinearity and the phase angle difference between leakage current and the applied voltage decrease with the raising of leakage current.At the initial stage,the leakage current peak value is less than 10mA and hardly has any harmonic content.When the arc is intermittent,the harmonic content of the leakage current is the largest.The leakage current waveform is smooth and has fewer harmonics on pre-flashover status.And the preflashover current increases with the increasing of salt deposit density(SDD).

Abstract:Investigations have been made of the performance of composite insulators because of the repeated flashover accidents on the lightly iced insulators in winter in the north of China. Based on the field research, a new test method was developed by taking into account the combined influences of the light ice accumulation and the secondary contamination deposition on the ice surface, and a different view of reproducing the atmospheric and environmental conditions in laboratory was provided accordingly. The test results confirmed that the icing flashover voltages of composite insulators with secondary contamination deposition were considerably lower than the contamination flashover voltage when the insulators were both pre-contaminated with the same equivalent salt deposit density (ESDD). In these areas where similar accidents happened, the increase in the insulation strength should be considered.

Abstract:Some improvement on the icing flashover test procedures by taking into account the combined influences of the heavy ice accumulation was made. The test results demonstrated that the icing flashover voltages of the composite insulators with secondary contamination gave considerably lower values than the other two types of flashover voltages, namely the contamination flashover voltage obtained in the conventional clean-fog and the icing flashover voltage without secondary contamination, all the insulators being pre-contaminated with the same degree of equivalent salt deposit density (ESDD).

Abstract:Flashover of contaminated insulators,imperiling the reliability of high voltage power system severely,has been the hot point for researchers in high voltage and insulation field.In this paper,present status and problems such as artificial pollution test,mechanism studying,character detecting,and modeling in the research of flashover was summarized and compared.It is considered that the main problems existing in pollution test are correlation between test parameters and flashover values and difference of test power source from that of service site.Some kinds of methods that can be used for flashover identifying and risk predicting from monitored data was offered,such as distance judgement,fuzzy classification,limiting value risk prediction and information mergence.In the author's opinion,the key to solving the problem is developing effective and proper method for flashover predicting,where the fuzzy logical theory combing more information is worth of studying and flashover modeling hasn't too worthiness.Some suggestion about preventing and predicting flashover in the future were offered in the end of this paper too.
Wet Flashover Characteristic of Composite Post Insulators at High Altitudes

Abstract:This paper presents the experimental results of five types of composite post insulators and two types of porcelain post insulators with different shed designs in natural high-altitude areas (1 970 m),on wet flashover. The solid layer method was used in experiments and 50% wet flashover voltages (U50%) were determined by using the Up-and-Down Method with negative voltage. Experimental results indicated that shed spacing had a significant influence on the contaminated water column between every two sheds,so the wet flashover voltage differed greatly with different shed design. When the shed overhang increased,the leakage distance of the post insulator enlarged. The wet flashover voltage with large shed overhang was higher than that with small shed overhang. The precipitation and the water conductivity also had great effects on the wet flashover voltage. The relationship between the wet flashover voltage and the precipitation or the water conductivity was congruous with the power function relation.
Influence of Flashover Initiation Process on Surface Insulation Performance for Insulators under Impulse Voltage in Vacuum

Abstract:This study experimentally presents how the flashover evolves from cathode-initiated to anode-initiated. An intensified CCD camera was employed to capture the surface flashover development process across 95% alumina ceramics in vacuum under seven kinds of electrode-sample structures with different electric field distributions. Experiments results suggested that flashover could initiate at either cathode or anode, which strongly depended on the competition between the localized field stress and electrical strength of the material. A basic relationship between surface flashover development process and its insulation performance was established. This study may contribute to guide the design of facilities used for pulsed power and electro-vacuum fields to achieve higher insulation capability.

Abstract:The DC contamination flashover performance of composite insulators with different sheds design has been investigated at high altitude using up and down method. The experimental results demonstrated that the 50% flashover voltage do not have a monotonic relation with the leakage distance, which is different from classical theory. The shed spacing and the shed dimensions both have significant influence on the flashover performance. An arc propagation model based on probability is described to show the effect of shed design on the flashover voltage. The agreement between this model and the experimental results can be well satisfied.

Abstract:Since the beginning of the 20th century, surface flashover phenomena have been investigated from a viewpoint of scientific interest. The surface flashover can cause serious accident and limit the development of the electric power and high voltage equipment. The measurement of surface charge is important to understand the discharge of insulating materials and may help to find new ways to improve the flashover voltage. Based on the principle of the electrostatic probe, a system for the measurement of charge distribution on insulating material in vacuum is invented; the surface charge distribution on insulating material before and after the surface flashover is compared. The relationship between the flashover characteristics and the surface charge is discussed.

Abstract:A particle-in-cell and Monte-Carlo collision (PIC-MCC) model is constructed in order to emulate the development of surface flashover on insulator in vacuum, which involves secondary electron emission avalanche (SEEA), outgassing, and ionization. It is found that multipactor first expands from cathode to anode, subsequently, an ionization avalanche due to increased local pressure occurs near anode and leads to gas breakdown. The spatial distribution of electrons is presented in both saturated secondary electron emission (SSEE) stage and the initiation of gas breakdown stage. Time evolution of electron, ion, desorbed gas molecule and surface charge are investigated in detail. Also the influence of applied voltage and insulator length on flashover are studied carefully. Simulation results show that higher applied voltage enhances the electron collisions on insulator and the speed of pressure build-up. Meanwhile, longer insulator is more vulnerable under the same applied electric field on account that electrons are further accelerated in a greater distance, possessing higher energy and triggering consecutive ionizations more rampantly.
Study on Un-uniform Pollution Flashover Characteristic of DC Composite Insulators

Abstract:In order to supply the designing foundation of composite insulator in EHVDC and UHVDC system, un-uniform pollution flashover characteristic of DC composite inshulators and the promoting range of pollution flashover voltage under hydrophobic status are studied by artificial pollution test method in this paper. The correction formula of un-uniform pollution flashover voltage of DC composite insulator is presented for the first time in the world and the correction coefficient of pollution flashover voltage is obtained too. The study results indicate that the effect of the pollution un-uniform distribution on top/bottom surface of composite insulator shed on flashover voltage is smaller than that of porcelain or glass insulators. The correction coefficient of DC composite insulator is 1.065. The DC pollution flashover gradient under hydrophobic status is bigger 153% than that under hydrophilic status.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem of surface flashover caused by the state of solid insulation surface, the influence of physicochemical characteristics and surface defects on the surface flashover process is reviewed. Study found that there are correlation relationship between the characteristic of the flashover with solid insulation and surface physical and chemical characteristics, mainly by the surface microstructure of trap distribution density, surface energy state and surface roughness characteristic factors, and argued that the flashover phenomenon is essentially a high electric field under the lose of gas-solid interface charge for operation, and because the solidification processing on the surface of the solid insulation defects, and the analysis of the flashover process will need to consider the comprehensive function surface physicochemical properties and surface defects. According to the research of flash over phenomenon caused by the micro cracks on the surface, the evolution process of the surface defects and the influence mechanism was analyzed, the characteristics of the flashover discharge by changing the state of solid insulation surface characteristics was put forward to improve the method of flashover voltage, and further to explore the flash-over mechanism of gas-solid interface.

Abstract:Prior to the flashover across an insulator in vacuum, the insulator surface is usually charged. It is of great importance to investigate the charging phenomena for better understanding the flashover characteristics. It is considered that there are two kinds of mechanisms closely related to the surface charging of insulator i.e., the secondary electron emission occurred over an insulator, and while employing a perfect electrode contact ahead of electron emission into vacuum, the charge injection and accumulation occurred inside the surface layer of an insulator. Based on the rigorous analysis of the kinetic processes of both primary and secondary electrons, the related surface charges were theoretically deduced. Involving the detrapping of charges trapped and the recombination of charges injected, the charging process due to charge injection and accumulation was analyzed. Some formulas were given to express the density of surface charges.
Surface Flashover Characteristics of Oil-Paper Insulation under Combined AC-DC Voltage

Abstract:The valve side winding of the converter transformers withstood several types of voltage. This paper investigated the effects of voltage component on the surface flashover characteristics of oil-paper insulation under combined AC-DC voltage in different ratio. The whole flashover process of surface flashover of oil-paper insulation under combined AC-DC voltage was studied by using two types of electrodes. The experimental conclusion was shown that the flashover voltage increased with the DC ratio in the combined AC-DC voltage component. Flashover voltage decreased significantly when the radial electric field increases in the electric field component. Furthermore, electric field distributions versus combined AC-DC voltage in different ratio were calculated by Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Due to the different distribution characteristics of DC electric field and AC electric field, when the DC ratio was higher, the surface flashover location tended to pressboard surface. Conversely, when the AC ratio was higher, it tended to the oil gap between the electrodes. Moreover, based on highspeed camera, it was used to capture emitted light produced by surface flashover, record flashover initiation and propagation process in small oil gap between the electrodes.
