Abstract:Three-way catalyst(TWC) converters are widely used for removal of automotive toxic exhaust gases to meet strict emission regulation all over the world. The paper reviews the historical development of catalytic converters from the oxidizing catalyst to the TWC catalyst converters briefly, and then highlights the latest advanced techniques in TWC converters. The topics covered include versatile post-treatment techniques for cold-start engine emissions, manufacture of catalyst supports, improvement of oxygen storage capacity of TWC catalysts, and catalytic treatment for lean burn engines.

Abstract:Engine exhaust pollutants have caused serious environmental pollution and harm to human health. As the most effective and economical technology to control pollutants in engine exhaust, catalytic purification technology has become a focus of current research. The development of low-cost and efficient catalysts is the decisive factor for the widespread application of catalytic purification technology. In recent years, transition metal-modified zeolite catalysts have been widely used to eliminate engine exhaust pollutants because of their low cost, high activity, and high stability. This article introduces the preparation methods for a series of transition metal-modified zeolites, such as Fe-modified, Cu-modified, Mn-modified, Ti-modified, Co-modified zeolites, and bimetal-modified zeolites. Meanwhile, the research progress of transition metal-modified zeolite catalysts for removing pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides, soot particles, volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, methane, etc., has also been summarized in detail. Finally, the problems and future development tendencies of transition metal-modified zeolite catalysts for the catalytic elimination of engine exhaust pollutants have been proposed.

Abstract:With increasingly severe air pollution and improvement in people's environmental awareness, air pollutant treatment, especially for soot particles (PMs), has become a research hotspot in the environmental protection field. At present, catalytic purification technology is one of the most effective and widely used technologies for treating PMs, and the development of efficient and low-cost catalysts is a key factor in the application of catalytic purification technology. Doping alkali/alkaline earth metals in metal oxide catalysts can significantly improve the contact efficiency between the catalyst and PMs and improve active oxygen mobility on the catalyst surface. Therefore, it has been widely used in catalytic soot purification. In this study, preparation methods for alkali/alkaline earth metal-modified metal oxide catalysts, such as impregnation, hydrothermal, sol-gel, coprecipitation, template, and other methods, are introduced, and the related preparation principles are described. Meanwhile, research progress into the above catalysts in catalytic PM purification and simultaneous soot and nitrogen oxide species (NOx) removal are summarized in detail. Finally, the problems and future development trends in alkali/alkaline earth metal-modified metal oxide catalysts in catalytic PM purification are summarized and discussed.

Abstract:Progress in the research of Pd-only three way catalysts was reviewed systematically in the present paper.The development of Pd-only catalysts for control of automobile exhaust was reviewed.The major effectors of three-way catalytic performance of Pd-only automobile exhaust catalysts were presented and discussed,which are the selection of additives,the loading methods of Pd,the preparation parameters and so on.The development and trend in the future were prospected.

Abstract:The main factors restricking the application of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology in China to control NOx emission are the problems of catalyst cost for SCR denitrification and the potential secondary pollution of heavy metalls.For this reason,the research achivements for catalysts of SCR denitrifucation by NH3 and hydrocarbon have been expounded respectively,such as metal oxides,metal ion exchanged zeolites,titanium pillared clay,Al2O3 supported heavy metalls,and rare earth oxides catalysts,and including principles of selecting a suitable catalyst,reation mechanism,catalytic activity,temperature range of activity,and effects of H2O and SO2 in the flue gas etc.,and direction for further improving catalytic activities being proposed.

Abstract:Cordierite honeycomb ceramic is one of key materials for vehicle exhaust purification as a support material in catalytic converters and diesel particulate filters,owing to its superior thermal and mechanical properties.In view of more and more stringent emission standards,the improvement of cordierite honeycomb ceramic becomes an important issue,especially in product specifications and performances.The extrusion method of cordierite honeycomb is reviewed in this paper with focuses on the process choice,raw materials specifications and impurity elements.In the context of the huge market demand for cordierite honeycomb ceramics,some key problems are discussed,including the possible routes to improve the product quality and the challenge of the international competitiveness.

Different preparation methods of coatings on the metallic support are introduced and their advantages and disadvantages are discussed. The direction towards superior metallic support coating methods is indicated.

Abstract:In the industrial circumstances, sulfur-containing species are frequently present simultaneously in the exhaust gas containing methane, ethane and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These species may occupy the active sites on the catalyst surface during the oxidation reaction, causing temporary physical deactivation of the catalyst. Moreover, permanent deactivation might occur when sulfur-containing species react with the active sites, which thereby causes the poisoning and invalidation of the catalysts. This paper reviewed the anti-toxicity properties of precious metals, composite metal oxides and perovskite-type catalysts adopted in the catalytic combustion of exhaust gas. The detailed poisoning mechanism of the catalysts was discussed, and the way to improve the anti-toxicity of the catalyst was proposed accordingly. This review may provide some insight into the development of catalysts with high resistance to sulfur poisoning.

Abstract:The present paper aims at introducing the authors' method of preparing noble metal-rare earth and analyzing its performance as a complex catalyst which can be used for purifying vehicle emission. The catalyst we have prepared shows good conversion efficiency of HC and CO, which can satisfy the expected heat endurance ability. The emission test shows that the motorcycles which have adopted the given catalyst can meet Euro Ⅱ emission standard. Moreover, as a new kind of complex catalyst, when coated on the metallic honeycomb substrate, helps to improve the function of the vehicle's exhaust emission converter in several motorcycles. Since nearly all the motorcycle exhaust emission converters used in China are imported from abroad, the catalyst developed in this paper has relatively lower cost and displays quite a satisfactory utilization properties.

Abstract:Rational development of high-performance catalysts for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is important for NO x removal. As the most widely used commercial catalysts, coated monolithic catalysts need to adapt to the harsh external conditions, which make researchers concerned about maintaining structural integrity, catalytic activity, and toxicity resistance in services. Herein, we seek solutions by clarifying the influences of coating process parameters on these three concerns, and trying to tackle the technical difficulties of coated monolithic catalysts in SCR applications. The insights presented in this paper are beneficial to the synthesis optimization and engineering innovations for SCR catalysts.

Abstract:In order to reduce the harmful gases and particulate matter in the atmospheric environment, alleviate the pollution of automobile exhaust,this paper studies the preventive maintenance seal based on exhaust gas purification and PM2.5 adsorption. The optimal preparation process at the micrometer is determined by the ratio design at the micro-surfacing. Based on wet wheel wear test and rutting deformation test, the influence of environmental protection material content on wear resistance and high temperature stability of micro-surfacing was studied.A set of automobile exhaust pollutant purification test equipment was developed, and the test method was determined. The exhaust purification performance of environmental protection micro-surfacing and the adsorption effect of PM2.5 and 10 particles was studied. The microstructure of environmental protection materials was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the mechanism of tail gas purification and PM2.5 particle adsorption was revealed.The results show that with the increase of nano TiO 2 /tourmaline composite content, the viscosity and high temperature stability of SBR modified emulsified asphalt evaporation residue are improved, but the ability to resist deformation at low temperature is slightly reduced. When the content of nano-TiO 2 /tourmaline is 7%,the wear resistance at the micro-surfacing increases by 4%, and the high temperature stability increases by 14.6%.The purification efficiency of various gas components in automobile exhaust by adding nano-TiO 2 /tourmaline composite micrometer reached 33.3% of hydrocarbons, 46% of carbon monoxide and 92.8% of nitrogen oxides, respectively. The adsorption effect of particulate component PM2.5and10 in automobile exhaust reached 29.9% and 25.2%, respectively.The nano-TiO 2 aggregates loaded on the surface of tourmaline particles are uniformly dispersed, and the crystal forms are anatase and rutile. The permanent electric field generated by spontaneous permanent polarization of tourmaline can accelerate the separation of electron-hole pairs and improve the redox ability of nano-TiO 2 .The permanent electric field of tourmaline and the permanent release of air negative ions can absorb and neutralize the charged suspended particles in the air, so as to achieve the purpose of settlement.

Abstract:The elimination of pollutants from diesel exhaust has received widespread research attention as they cause serious air pollution and pose a threat to human health. Catalytic post-treatment technology is one of the most effective and universal technologies to treat diesel exhaust pollutants. The design and development of efficient and low-cost catalysts is the key factor to realize the wide application of catalytic post-treatment technology. Cerium (Ce)-based oxides with specific morphologies are widely used to eliminate pollutants in diesel vehicle exhaust due to their unique physical and chemical properties, such as high catalytic activity, low cost and non-toxicity. In this review, the preparation methods of Ce-based oxide materials with specific morphologies, such as nanoparticles, nanocubes, nanorods, nanofibers, and multi-stage pores, are introduced in detail, and the research progress on using these catalysts for the removal of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, soot particles, nitrogen oxides, and other pollutants from diesel exhaust is reviewed in detail. Finally, the unresolved issues associated with using Ce-based oxide catalysts with a specific morphology to catalytically remove pollutants from diesel exhaust are highlighted, and future application prospects and development directions are discussed. Abstract:Automotive exhaust emission is a major cause of air pollution. Three-way catalyst (TWC) which can eliminate CO, HC (hydrocarbons), and NO(x) simultaneously has been used to control exhaust emissions. Ceria-zirconia is a key component in TWC and most researchers pay attention to Ceria-Zirconia (Ce-rich) solid solution. The research presented in this paper is focused on the intrinsic structure of Ceria-Zirconia (Zr-based) solid solution and its application in TWC. A series of Ce(0.2)Zr(0.8)O(2) modified with rare earths (La, Nd, Pr, Sm, and Y) have been prepared by coprecipitation method combined with supercritical drying technique. All samples showed single tetragonal solid solution, indicating that the rare earth ion inserted into the lattice structure completely, and an approximately linearly relationship between lattice parameter a and the ionic radius of doped rare earth was observed. The catalytic performances of corresponding Pd-only catalysts were investigated in simulated exhaust gas. The presence of La, Nd, and Pr was favorable to the catalytic activity and wide air/fuel operation window. The relationship between the intrinsic structure of the Zr-based ceria-zirconia solid solution and catalytic activity was discussed in detail, which has some reference value for catalyst design and application.

Abstract:The purification of gaseous pollutants, especially for nitrogen oxides, from the combustion of fossil fuels has become a concern matter at present. Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology is proved an effective method to remove nitrogen oxides. The performance of catalysts, such as the improvement of anti-poisoning ability and low-temperature catalytic efficiency, become the main direction of current extensive research. Carbonaceous materials were widely applied in low-temperature catalysts for removal of NOx due to their various structures and rich surface functional groups, and had potential to expand the function to remove multipollutant. Herein, different carbonaceous materials, activated methods and carbon-based NH3-SCR catalysts were concluded, and the corresponding reaction mechanisms were discussed. In addition, the removal of double or three contamination components with carbon-based catalysts were also summarized and discussed. Finally, further development directions for carbonaceous material in pollutants control were proposed.

Abstract:The ceria nanotubes on the inner walls of cordierite honeycombs were prepared by hydrothermal method.The optimal synthetic process was ascertained by adjusting preparation condition parameters.Compared with the traditional three-way catalyst,the ceria nanotubes based monolithic catalyst effectively inhibited high temperature sintering of precious metal,and exhibited improvement of catalytic performance due to its higher specific surface area and better dispersibility.
Preparation and Characterization of Mesoporous CuO/ZSM-5 Catalysts for Automotive Exhaust Purification

Abstract:Mesoporous zeolite ZSM-5 was prepared from microporous zeolite ZSM-5 treated with alkaline solution. Then CuO/ZSM-5 catalysts were successfully fabricated by an equal volume impregnation method. The texture structure, crystal phase, and acidity were characterized by N-2 physisorption-desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), F- scanning electron micrographs (SEM), and NH3-TPD techniques. The results showed that the mesoporous surface area and pore volume of ZSM-5 treated with alkali increased significantly from 77 m( )(2)g(-1) and 0.086 cm(3) g(-1) to 192 m(2) g(-1) and 0.326 cm(3) g(-1), respectively. The mesoporous surface area and mesoporous pore volume of ZSM-5 loaded with CuO decreased slightly. XRD patterns showed that the crystallinity of the zeolite decreased gradually with the increase of alkali concentration. The XRD patterns of the CuO/ZSM-5 samples indicated high CuO dispersion in the zeolites treated by alkali. All zeolites have the MFI framework topology. The catalytic activity of CuO/ZSM-5 series for simulating automobile exhaust shows that the optimum catalyst is CuO/ZSM-5(0.5). To purify auto-exhaust, the CuO/ZSM-5 exhibited improved catalytic activities than that of ZSM-5 and the conversion rate of NO, CO, and C3H6 was 100%, 85.87%, and 100%, respectively.

Abstract:Catalytic converters are used to convert harmful gases such as carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and unburned hydrocarbons (HC) into less harmful or harmless gas emissions like carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen (N2), and water vapor (H2O). In this study, supported catalysts for use of these CO and NO were developed by deposition of noble metals on cordierite (Cor) support with impregnation (IMP) in aqueous media. Effects of catalysts and washcoating for cordierite support were evaluated for carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide activity in a batch reactor. They were characterized using XRD, BET, Raman, FTIR, and SEM–EDS. All catalysts were found to be effective in carbon monoxide conversion. The washcoating of catalyst support with cerium, lanthanum, zirconium, and yttrium changed the activity of the catalyst. The catalytic activity increased 20% with the washcoating. The coating enhanced catalytic activity by using cerium and zirconium oxides which improved thermal stability, while rare earth elements like lanthanum and yttrium helped stabilize the catalyst and optimize carbon monoxide conversion although some combinations had a negative impact on performance. It was observed that the C-Cor-Rh catalyst (99.96%) and C-Cor-Pd converted almost all (99.94%) harmful NO gas. The results showed that these catalysts had high efficiency for converting harmful NO x gaseous to different components. This study shown that innovative, cost-effective and highly efficient catalytic converters can be obtained by shaping the quality and quantity of the precious metals to be dopped to the support material through effective washcoating modeling.

Abstract:Background Driven by emission regulations, the technology of emission control catalysts has been under increasing need for development. Understanding the deactivation mechanism of aged or spent automobile exhaust catalysts is the key to extending their service lifetime. However, the lack of comprehensive microstructural characterization results in an incomplete understanding of their physicochemical properties. Deactivation mechanism of automobile exhaust catalysts is a considerably complex phenomenon, it can be classified into three groups based on its origin: thermal sintering, chemical poisoning and mechanical deactivation. Results In this study, an aged high-mileage automobile exhaust catalyst with Pd and Rh active phases supported on a cerium zirconium oxide–doped alumina coating on cordierite was analysed; six consecutive monolithic blocks along the inlet to the outlet of the aged catalyst were extracted, and the corresponding metallographic samples were fabricated using the vacuum impregnation resin method. The purpose of this study was to accurately characterize the different regions of the monolith via electron probe microanalysis and to infer potential causes of catalyst deactivation. Two major causes of deactivation were found: (1) aggregation and alloying of precious-metal particles caused by thermal sintering and (2) chemical poisoning caused by sulphur and phosphorus. Other mechanisms, such as mechanical degradation, which mainly manifests as the loss or wear of the washed coating, were also found to be involved in deactivation. Additionally, the catalytic activity tests showed a considerable decrease in the aged catalyst. The poison concentration trends in the washcoat indicated that P is detrimental to CO oxidation, while S accumulation affects propane oxidation. Significance This analysis method can be of substantial practical significance in developing advanced washcoat materials. Meanwhile, it has great potential in the washcoat analysis of honeycomb-shaped monolithic catalyst, such as natural gas catalyst, diesel vehicle oxidation catalyst and other honeycomb catalysts applied in chemical industry.

Abstract:The interactions between metals and oxide supports, so-called metal-support interactions (MSI), are of great importance in heterogeneous catalysis. Pd-based automotive exhaust control catalysts, especially Pd-based three-way catalysts (TWCs), have received considerable research attention owing to its prominent oxidation activity of HCs/CO, as well as excellent thermal stability. For Pd-based TWCs, the dispersion, chemical state and thermal stability of Pd species, which are crucial to the catalytic performance, are closely associated with interactions between metal nanoparticles and their supporting matrix. Progress on the research about MSI and utilization of MSI in advanced Pd-based three-way catalysts are reviewed here. Along with the development of advanced synthesis approaches and engine control technology, the study on MSI would play a notable role in further development of catalysts for automobile exhaust control.
