Abstract:To evaluate the efficacy of gold ring implantation through anterior chamber angle (GRI), a new filtering surgery. Methods Sustained ocular hypertension was induced in 41 right eyes of albino rabbit by injecting α-chymotrypsin into the posterior chamber. Four weeks later, GRI was performed in 15 eyes. 14 eyes underwent posterior lip sclerectomy(PLS). 12 additional glaucomatous eyes were left untreated to serve as controls. Results The GRI group achieved a significant reduction of intraocular pressure (IOP) compared to the control group up to 40 days postoperatively ( P 0.05). So did the PLS group until postoperative 22 days. There was a higher incidence of ocular hypotension in PLS group than in GRI group on postoperative day 1 ( P 0.01). Successful filtration lasted significantly longer in the GRI group (44.4± 18.3 days) than in the PLS group (27.7±9.5 days) ( P 0.05). There was a significant difference in terms of bleb survival between the former and the latter (19.7±10.4 days versus 6.9±2.9 days, P 0.01 ). The GRI group had larger bleb scores than the PLS group on postoperative days 7 through 22 ( P 0.05). Conclusion It is suggested that GRI is effective to lower the IOP in experimental rabbit glaucoma. Further study is necessary to investigate its role in clinical practice.
