Abstract:The process,main equipments and formula for the production of rigid PVC foaming decorative lines were introduced.The function of each ingredient and their influences on the quality of products were discussed.The author thought that:(1)the foaming regulators,foaming agents were the key factors of influencing the product density and the stability during the production of PVC foaming decorative lines;(2)the content and the opposing effect of ineffective components contained in processing agent ACR,foaming regulators and stabilizers were the uncontrollable factors of influencing foaming stability and approved rate,and must be paid enough attention.

Study on the fusion properties of extruded foaming rigid PVC

Abstract:Melting fusion properites of extruded foaming PVC compounds under constant temperature and programmed increasing temperature conditions were studied using a Haake torque rheometer.The results showed that the fusion time and melt torque increased with the polymerization degree of PVC increasing;with the using amount of ACR processing aid and its molecular weight increasing,the fusion time decreased while the melt torque increased;ACR impact modifier could improve the fusion properties,which was similiar to that of ACR processing aid;the fusion properties was improved after CaCO 3 was added;the foaming agent ADC would slow down the fusion speed of PVC compound and increase melt viscosity,while foaming agent NaHCO 3 would sharply decrease its fusion speed.

Abstract:PMMA/Poly(MMA-co-St-co-AN),PMSN,with core-shell structured copolymer was prepared by seeded emulsion polymerization.The monomer conversion is high and the particle diameter distribution monitored by dynamic light scattering is narrow.This results show that the particles grow without significantly secondary nucleation occurring and the latex particle size can be designed.Meanwhile,the intrinsic viscosity [η] for the soluble polymer of PMSN in butanone increases with the addition of allyl methacrylate (AMA).When PMSN is blended with low molecular weight poly(vinyl chloride)(PVC) resin,the melt equilibrium torque is increased with the increase of intrinsic viscosity of PMSN.Extrusion of rigid foam is the most demanding PVC process in terms of melt strength.Since the final targeted density can typically be a third of that of compact PVC,high melt strength is essential to retain gas bubbles in the melt and to avoid a collapse of the cells.Finally,the PMSN process aid synthesized meets the industrial requirements of rigid PVC foam.

Abstract:Polymer rigid foams are highly required in the fields of wind power, transportation and construction due to lightweight and high performances. Herein, we have established a novel strategy of “plasticizing-foaming-reinforcing” (PFR) for preparing reprocessable thermoplastic/thermoset blend foams. PVC and the crosslinking monomers for polyurea (CMs) were melting mixed and foamed via supercritical CO2 (sc-CO2) foaming process followed by post-curing. The resultant PVC/polyurea blend foam presents ultra-high expansion ratio (51 times) and much smaller cell size as compared to those prepared by the traditional chemical foaming method, thus displays excellent thermal insulation performance (26.95 mW m−1 K−1) and excellent mechanical robustness, especially at lower temperature. Furthermore, the PFR strategy provides the PVC/CMs blend foam with a flexible molding ability at room temperature, allowing to form versatile three-dimensional (3D) structures. Strikingly, the microphase-separation structure of PVC-encapsulated polyurea in the cell wall endows the PVC/polyurea blend foam with excellent shape memory behavior. The PFR strategy paves a new avenue to fabricate thermoplastic/thermosetting (TP/TS) polymer blend foams in an easy-going green foaming process, which combines the performance advantages of both types of resins simultaneously possessing recyclable property.

Abstract:In this work, we propose, for the first time, a simple, fast, and efficient strategy to fabricate high-performance rigid crosslinked PVC composites by continuous extrusion. This strategy improves the poor processing fluidity of composites and solves the impossibility of conducting extrusion in one step via using microcapsule-type crosslinking agents prepared by in situ polymerization to co-extrude with PVC blends. The results demonstrate that the PVC/microcapsule composites were successfully prepared. Within the studied parameters, the properties of crosslinked PVC gradually increased with the addition of microcapsules, and its Vicat softening temperature increased from 79.3 °C to 86.2 °C compared with pure PVC. This study shows the possibility for the industrial scale-up of the extrusion process for rigid crosslinked PVC.

Abstract:Although low density poly(ethylene terephthalate) foams take advantage of the combination of good performances and lightness and have a wide range of engineering applications, extrusion foaming of the poly(ethylene terephthalate) is still faced with many challenges, especially the inadequate rheological characteristics. In this work, the melt strength of four types of poly(ethylene terephthalate) was compared on the basis of the analysis on the dynamic complex viscosity, storage and loss modulus, relaxation spectrum, loss factor and extensional viscosity using rheometer. It was found that the two long chain branching poly(ethylene terephthalates) owned overall higher melt viscosity and greater elasticity than the other two linear ones. Furthermore, only one long chain branching poly(ethylene terephthalate), i.e. PET4, succeeded in the extensional viscosity characterization and showed the phenomenon of strain hardening. Thereafter, PET4 was successfully applied for the extrusion foaming with CO2 as the blowing agent. The effects of the foaming temperature, screw revolution speed, gas input and addition of nucleation agent were carefully investigated on the extrusion foaming and the resulted poly(ethylene terephthalate) foams properties. Under the optimization condition, the extruded poly(ethylene terephthalate) foams were produced with the volume expansion ratio of 9.5, average cell size of 265 µm, cell density of 4.58 × 105 cells/cm3 and a narrow cell size distribution.
Preparation of high melt strength polypropylene by the reactive extrusion process and its foaming application

Abstract:The reactive extrusion of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) with ethylenediamine (EDA) as coupling agent was carried out in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder to produce long chain branched polypropylene (LCBPP). Part of PP-g-MAH was replaced by maleic anhydride grafted high-density polyethylene (HDPE-g-MAH) or linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE-g-MAH) to obtain hybrid long chain branched (LCB) polymers. Compared with the linear PP, PE and their blends, the LCB polyolefins exhibit excellent dynamic shear and transient extensional rheological characteristics such as increased dynamic modulus, higher low-frequency complex viscosity, significantly enhanced melt strength and strain-hardening behaviors. LCB polymers also have higher tensile strength, tensile modulus, impact strength and lower elongation at break than linear polymer and their blends. Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) was introduced in the reactive extrusion process. With the presence of scCO 2, the motor current of twin extruder was decreased and LCB polyolefins with lower MFR, higher complex viscosity and increased tensile strength and modulus were obtained. This indicates that the application of scCO2 can reduce the viscosity of melt in extruder, enhance the diffusion of reactive species, facilitate the reaction between functional groups, and increase the LCB density. The foaming behavior of both linear and LCB polyolefins were studied. The results show that cellular materials produced from the LCB polyolefins have higher weight reduction, smaller cell size and better mechanical properties than those produced from the linear polymers.

Abstract:Due to the biaxial oriented PVC (PVC-O) pipes have a great improvement in the strength, heat resistance, modulus, and impact resistance, etc. So the new products can be used in many situations. Referring to the foreign Mouth die drawing method, the mechanism of quasi-dynamic expansion method is proposed in the paper. We chose the hard polyvinyl chloride (PVC-U) pipes for raw materials, through the forward movement of the pipe match with the vertical reciprocating movement of the expansion parts, improve the design of a whole package of biaxial oriented self-reinforced pipe continuous production device. The device has great advanced properties: small expansion friction resistance, high hoop extension ratio, simple production device, production line is easy to start etc.
Preparation and Properties of in Situ Polymerization of Poly (vinyl Chloride)

Abstract:The in situ suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride was carried out in a system containing chlorinated polyethylene (CPE, the impact modifier), CaCO 3 (the filler), lubricants and thermal stabilizers to generate ready-to-processing PVC resins (RTUPVC). The effects of the various additives on the polymerization and the properties of the resins were investigated. The polymerization time until certain pressure drop was reduced with the addition of CPE and CaCO 3, however, the lubricant and thermal stabilizer retarded the polymerization. CPE improved the plasticity and both impact and tensile strengths. RTUPVC resin exhibited higher impact and tensile strengths than PVC/CPE blends with the same CPE content. The particle size of the resin was increased with increasing content of CPE, but not affected by other additives.

Abstract:A rigid poly(vinyl chloride) foam with a cross-linked network structure was prepared by adding 3-glycidoxypropyltriethoxysilane (KH-561) into the universal formulation. The resulting foam had excellent heat resistance because of the increasing degree of cross-linking and number of Si-O bonds with a high heat resistance. The as-prepared foam was verified using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS) and foam residue (gel) analysis, which demonstrated that KH-561 was successfully grafted and cross-linked on the PVC chains. Finally, the effects of different KH-561 and NaHSO3 additions on the mechanical properties and heat resistance of the foams were studied. The results showed that the mechanical properties of the rigid cross-linked PVC foam were raised after adding a certain amount of KH-561 and NaHSO3. The residue (gel), decomposition temperature, and chemical stability of the foam significantly improved compared to the universal rigid cross-linked PVC foam (Tg = 72.2 °C). The Tg of the foam could reach 78.1 °C without any mechanical degradation. The results have important engineering application value regarding the preparation of lightweight, high-strength, heat-resistant, and rigid cross-linked PVC foam materials.
Key Technologies Used in Extrusion Foaming of Polypropylene--Review on Properties of Foaming System and Foaming Mechanisms

Abstract:The key technologies used in the extrusion foaming of polypropylene were introduced based on the properties of foaming system and foaming mechanisms, focusing on the viscoelasticity of polypropylene melt, solubility and diffusivity of blowing agents, crystallization behavior of polypropylene, as well as cell nucleation and bubble growth mechanisms. The research results showed that the long-chain branched polypropylene with remarkable strain hardening behavior and high melt strength was the premise in the production of excellent polypropylene foam. The cell density, cell size and cell size distribution of polypropylene foam were influenced remarkably by the solubility and diffusivity of blowing agents, crystallization behavior of polypropylene, kinds and properties of nucleating agents. It was very useful of the appropriate cell nucleation and bubble growth mechanisms for formula design, processing technologies and extrusion line selection.

Abstract:Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is one of the most preferred thermoplastics in the world due to its compatibility with various additives. PVC products are examined in two groups soft and rigid. Sheath, insulation, and filling materials used in electrical cables are some of the common usage areas of soft PVC. In this study, a soft PVC compound extruder machine was designed and manufactured. The system consists of 6 components: powder feeding system, main rotor, discharge transfer screw system, pelletizer, pellet cooling (cooler) unit and main control panel (HMI). In the designed and produced machine, the temperature values can be entered into the HMI panel according to the desired formulation, and the temperatures of the desired sections can be controlled during the compound production using thermocouples. Heating is brought to the desired level using PID control with resistances, cooling with fans in the main screw area and water in the transfer area. During the compound production process, many values such as temperature and pressure values can be controlled from the material feeding section to the pelletizer section. The density of the soft PVC compound produced was measured as 1.475 gr/cm3 . The test sample was produced from PVC compound, which was produced via the compounder designed and manufactured in this study, with a laboratory-type extruder. Tensile and elongation tests were carried out according to the ISO 527-2 test method. As a result of the test, it was observed that produced soft PVC compound extended by 280%. As a result of the experiments, it has been determined that the designed and manufactured compounder machine produces the sheath, insulation and filling materials (Plasticized PVC) used in the electrical cables appropriately.

Abstract:The foaming behavior of semi-crystalline polymers is significantly affected by their crystallization. To achieve high expansion ratio of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) foams, we thought its cold crystallization should be restricted. Therefore, we used a short soaking time of CO2 to fabricate high-expansion PLA foams. Dynamic mechanical analysis of unfoamed PLA showed that only one rubbery plateau was observed owing to complete cold crystallization under a soaking time of 40 min at 10 MPa. The crystal morphology demonstrated that a short soaking time of 3 min could restrict the cold crystallization of PLA. Owing to plasticization of CO2, PLA crystallization of was accelerated at low temperatures (40-80 °C) but hindered at high temperatures (80-130 °C) at 10 MPa. Foaming results showed that under a soaking time of 3 min, a high expansion ratio exceeding 10 was achievable over a wide foaming temperature range of 90 to 115 °C because more amorphous regions were preserved at 10 MPa. In addition, the prepared foams presented an oriented cellular structure. Compared with the isotropic foam, the anisotropic foam exhibited higher compressive strength and heat resistance. The prepared PLA foams have good application prospects in the fields such as cushioning, packaging, and construction.

Abstract:A commerical process for the in-situ polymerization of nano-CaCO3 with vinyl chloride is invented.Up to now,27 polymerizers with volume more than 30 m3 have been used in China to produce nano-PVC resins,which are mainly used as chemical building materials.The structure characteristics of nano-PVC resin particles are introduced,and their thermostability,mechanical properties and rheological properties are studied.
Foaming polyethylene with CO2-BASED mixtures of blowing agents

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) is presenting many highly desirable properties as physical foaming agent. It is a low cost and non-flammable gas with good blowing power and fast dissolution in polymers. Unfortunately, extrusion of low density foams blown from CO 2 is still very difficult. This is especially true for foams made from semi-crystalline polymers such as polyethylene (PE). This paper describes the properties and performance of polyethylene foams made from mixtures of CO 2 and 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (HFC-134a). The use of HFC-134a as co-blowing agent was shown to enable the extrusion of lower density foams as compared to samples processed with CO 2 alone.

Abstract:Schematic diagram of preparing PLA beads using one‐step anhydrous supercritical CO2 extrusion foaming technology. Polylactic acid (PLA) is a bio‐based and biodegradable polymer. It is challenging to prepare PLA bead foams at a large scale in an efficient manner. Herein, beads of modified PLA are foamed by one‐step anhydrous supercritical CO2 extrusion. This dramatically shortens the production time, prevents the PLA from pyrohydrolysis, and avoids wastewater generation. The melt strength of the PLA is increased from 0.8 to 16.7 cN using a chain extender. The morphologies and microstructures of bead foams are analyzed. In the case of the PLA bead foam obtained by extrusion foaming combined with wind‐cooling pelletizing technology, the expansion ratio is higher than 13, the pore morphology is typical cellular structures, and the surface is glossy. The advantages and shortcomings of the PLA beads are also investigated. It is beneficial to promote the continuous preparation of PLA bead foams and other polymer beads like PS, and PP, which can be used in the fields of green packing, sound absorption, cold‐chain logistics, and so forth.

Abstract:Depending on the type and application, the coatings of power, electric, telecommunication cables as well as other types of conduits are made of various kinds of polymer plastics. However, most often, because of good mechanical properties and many other advantages, they are first of all made from polyvinyl chlorine (PVC). This paper contains characteristics of the developed cellular extrusion of cable coatings, as well as specification of the blowing agent (BA) used and selected research results of the obtained cellular extrusion product. In technological tests the coating extrusion technological line was used. The material was modified with a new blowing agent of exothermic distribution of process characteristics, which was introduced into the material in quantities from 0.2 to 0.6% wt. The amount of blowing agent used has a direct impact on the density and structure of the received result for the extrusion of modified polymers. The cellular structure of the cellular coatings was presented. The results of the study are thin-walled properties of single- and double-layer cellular outer coatings, forming an outer surface on a steel wire. The research on the structure of manufactured materials, density and the degree of porosity, water and oil absorptivity, mechanical strength is presented.
