Abstract:Control chart is one of important tools for in-line quality control. But it is difficult to recognize whether patterns exist on the chart or not, and when pattern exist which pattern it is. This paper discusses description of control chart patterns, and then proposes a neural network recognizer of these patterns, which based on a Modular Neural Network and data pretreatment by Fuzzy coding. It is shown that the proposed recognizer is feasible by computer simulation and application.

Abstract:The function of traditional Shewhart Control Charts is to monitor the process to be at a stable state and to detect assignable causes. It can not assure a designated quality requirement for a process. Quality- oriented SPC approach is presented based on quality-oriented statistical tolerancing technique in this paper. It can assure a designated quality requirement and remain the function of traditional Shewhart Control Charts. To develop a quality-oriented SPC approach, a standardized interface between process quality indices system and the design of control charts is needed, that is, quality-oriented statistical tolerance zone. The procedure of quality-oriented Shawart control charts design via statistical tolerancing is given.

Abstract:The software has been designed specially for concurrent application of the statistical tolerance (ST) and the statistical process control (SPC). The software system includes the two function modules for data, i.e. the data acquisition module with data collection and input, and data processing module with data storage and management, statistical analysis and control charts drawing. The system provides a set of functional modules for realizing three tasks: ST and SPC design, drawing control charts and verifying for assuring the designated process quality indices (PQIs) that representing required process quality. Some considerations for the software design are discussed and the mathematical modeling for ST and PQIs are given. The main steps for ST and PQI verification with the controlled process data are also introduced. The software of quality-oriented ST and SPC has been tested for its computing accuracy and precise. It provides an efficiency tool for ST and SPC parameter design and a convenient communication platform for product designers, manufacture engineers and quality engineers.

Abstract:In 1924 Walter A. Shewhart of the Bell Telephone Laboratories developed the statistical control chart concept. This is usually considered the formal origin of the field of statistical quality control. The control chart is one of the most important technological inventions of the 20th century; it has a simple theoretical foundation, it is easy to use, it can be applied in a wide range of business, service and industrial settings, and it is a proven effective technique in providing the information critical to variability reduction and process improvement. This paper discusses the foundations of Shewhart’s work, and his influence on other leaders of the field, including Joseph Juran and W. Edwards Deming. The Shewhart cycle (Plan-Do-Check-Act, or PDCA) was popularized by Deming as a fundamental process improvement paradigm that evolved into the Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control (DMAIC) process that is an integral part of the implementation of modern Six Sigma. Control charts have evolved in many directions beyond the basic Shewhart model, but they remain the key technical component of the field of statistical process control (SPC). We describe how SPC is an integral component of Six Sigma, and the critical role it plays in several steps of the DMAIC process. We conclude with a brief overview of some of the current research in the field.

Abstract:Along with the technical development,the unqualified rate of the products tends nigh zero.The traditional 3σ method seems to be incapable for modern online controlling.This paper presents consecutive conforming run-length(CCR) control charts based on the number of consecutive conforming items between two successive nonconforming items,and points out a new opinion of the optical limits through the analysis of the variation between the control limits of CCR control charts and the probabilities as well as the costs of the two types of the errors. Establishing a mathematical model for its costs,gives out the major parts of the researching process,the formula for the optical control limits and the application conditions.

Abstract:This article presents the optimization design of the combined Shewhart chart and CUSUM chart (X¯&CUSUM chart in short) used in Statistical Process Control (SPC). While the optimization design effectively improves the overall performance of the X¯&CUSUM chart over the entire process shift range, it does not increase difficulties in understanding and implementing this combined chart. A new feature pertaining to an additional charting parameter w (the exponential of the sample mean shift) is also investigated, with the hope of further enhancing the detection effectiveness of the X¯&CUSUM chart. Moreover, this article provides the SPC practitioners with a design table to facilitate the designs of the X¯&CUSUM charts. From this design table, the users can directly find the optimal values of the charting parameters, according to the design specifications. The design table makes the design of an X¯&CUSUM chart as simple as the design of the simplest X¯ chart. In general, this article will help to enhance the detection effectiveness of the X¯&CUSUM chart, and facilitate and promote its applications in SPC.

Abstract:In recent years, control charts monitoring the coefficient of variation (CV), denoted as the ratio of the variance to the mean, is attracting significant attention due to its ability to monitor processes in which the process mean and process variance are not independent of each other. However, very few studies have been done on charts to monitor downward process shifts, which is important since downward process shifts show process improvement. In view of the importance of today’s competitive manufacturing environment, this paper proposes a one-sided chart to monitor the downward multivariate CV (MCV) with variable sample size and sampling interval (VSSI), i.e. the VSSI D MCV chart. This paper monitors the MCV as most industrial processes simultaneously monitor at least two or more quality characteristics, while the VSSI feature is incorporated, as it is shown that this feature brings about a significant improvement of the chart. A Markov chain approach was adopted for designing a performance measure of the proposed chart. The numerical comparison revealed that the proposed chart outperformed existing MCV charts. The implementation of the VSSI D MCV chart is illustrated with an example.

Abstract:The implementation of Statistical Quality Control (SQC) has been tracked in various areas, such as agriculture, environment, industry, and health services. The employment of SQC methodologies is frequently employed for monitoring and identification of process irregularities across various fields. This research proposes and implements a novel SQC methodology in agricultural areas. A control chart is one of the SQC tools that facilitates real-time monitoring of multiple activities, including agricultural yield, industrial yield, and hospital outcomes. Advanced control charts with symmetrical data are being subjected to the new SQC method, which is suitable for this purpose. This research aims to develop a novel hybrid exponentially weighted moving average control chart for detecting the coefficient of variation (CV) using a repetitive sampling method called the HEWMARS-CV control chart. It is an effective tool for monitoring the mean and variance of a process simultaneously. The HEWMARS-CV control chart used the repetitive sampling scheme to generate two pairs of control limits to enhance the performance of the control chart. The proposed control chart is compared with the classical HEWMA and Shewhart control charts regarding the average run length (ARL) when the data has a normal distribution. The Monte Carlo simulation method is utilized to approximate the ARL values of the proposed control charts to determine their performance. The proposed control chart detects small shifts in CV values more effectively than the existing control chart. An illustrative application related to monitor the wheat yield at Rothamsted Experimental Station in Great Britain is also incorporated to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed control chart. The efficiency of the proposed HEWMARS-CV control chart on the real data shows that the proposed control chart can detect a shift in the CV of the process, and it is superior to the existing control chart in terms of the average run length.

Abstract:Most large software products have elaborate quality control processes involving many tasks performed by different groups using a variety of techniques. The defects found are generally recorded in a database which is used for tracking and prioritizing defects. However, this defect data also provides a wealth of information which can be analyzed for improving the process. In this paper, we describe the when–who–how approach for analyzing defect data to gain a better understanding of the quality control process and identify improvement opportunities. At the component level, the analysis provides the capability to assess strength of dependency between components, and new ways to study correlation between early and late defects. We also discuss the experience of applying this approach to defect data from an earlier version of Windows, and the improvement opportunities it revealed.

Abstract:To improve product quality in manufacturing process, a dynamic quality control method based on relation analysis is proposed. With the method, the dynamic regulated principal component analysis is constructed by introducing discount factor to eliminate the autocorrelation via the data, and the limit of multiple control charts is calculated by squared prediction error (SPE) statistics. Then, a dynamic adjusting policy by support vector machine (SVM) is proposed based on control chart pattern recognition. Finally, a case study for applicability is presented to verify the proposed method.

Abstract:Abstract Control charts, which originated at Bell Telephone Laboratories (1924), have been vital to quality and reliability engineering as well as statistical process control (SPC), serving as a cornerstone of quality management for the past century. Plenty of work has been done on the ideas and applications of control charts in quality control. However, there is a notable research gap in the comprehensive examination of the evolution, expansion and impact of control charts across various fields. This bibliometric study seeks to fill this gap by examining control charts from 1924 to 2023 and analyzing trends and patterns across an extensive scientific dataset. Objectives include documenting the historical context, identifying contributors, analyzing themes, and assessing temporal dynamics. The study utilizes R package bibliometric tools to analyze 7,880 articles from 2,337 sources. Findings reveal a consistent 7.94% annual growth rate, an average of 17.29 citations per document, and a total of 133,760 references in control charts research. Shewhart's (1931), Page's (1954), and Robert (1959) work set the basis and contributions from Duncan, A.J., D.C. Montgomery, Hawkins, D.M., and William H. Woodall influenced the research clusters. The engineering department remains the top consumer of control charts with 28%. National dynamics indicate global involvement, with major contributors from the United States, China, India, Iran Malaysia, United Kingdom and Pakistan. This study sheds light on global collaborations, key contributions in various disciplines, top journals and the long-term impact of former work on control chart research. Outcomes of this study in the form of key statistics, famous authors, rising subjects, influential institutions, leading countries and identified research gaps will enlighten further interactions and inspire researchers; which will lead to collaboration on SPC and control chart research. The need for more robust Industry 4.0 and 5.0 quality tools presents future methodological adjustments for researchers and practitioners.
