Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the value of invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) in comprehensive rescue for patients with pulmonary encephalopathy. Methods: Clinical data of 80 patients with pulmonary encephalopathy in medical intensive care unit (MICU) were collected. They were divided into two groups according to with (60 cases) or without (20 cases) IMV. Related factors that affects their outcome and prognosis were statisticaly analyzed by χ 2 and t tests. Results: There was no significant difference in respect to age, duration of disease, nutritional condition and the duration of the average hospital stay between two groups ( P 0.05 ). APACHE II score and the unconsciousness of patients with IMV were significantly more severe than that of non IMV group( P 0.05 ). Time required for correction of CO 2 retention in IMV group was significantly less than that of non IMV group ( P 0.001 ), but there was no difference in recovery time from unconsciousness between the two gruops( P 0.05 ). There was no differnce in fatality rate ( P 0.05 ). The death from respiratory failure in patients with non IMV were significantly higher than that in IMV group ( P 0.001 ). Conclusion: IMV is one of the most effective measures in treating patients with pulmonary encephalopathy at emergency.
