Abstract:Let H be a Hopf algebra over a base field. If H has an ℕ-filtration such that the associated graded ring is connected graded noetherian and has enough normal elements, then H is Gorenstein. This gives a partial solution to a question of Brown and Brown-Goodearl. As a consequence, every quotient Hopf algebra of a generic quantized coordinate ring of a connected semisimple Lie group is Auslander-Gorenstein and Cohen-Macaulay. The last statement answers a question of Goodearl-Zhang.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a structure theorem for connected graded Hopf algebras over a field of characteristic 0 by claiming the existence of a family of homogeneous generators and a total order on the index set that satisfy some desirable conditions. The approach to the structure theorem is constructive, based on the combinatorial properties of Lyndon words and the standard bracketing on words. As a surprising consequence of the structure theorem, we show that connected graded Hopf algebras of finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension over a field of characteristic 0 are all iterated Hopf Ore extensions of the base field. In addition, some keystone facts of connected Hopf algebras over a field of characteristic 0 are observed as corollaries of the structure theorem, without the assumptions of having finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension (or affineness) on Hopf algebras or of that the base field is algebraically closed.

Abstract:We study holomorphic locally homogeneous geometric structures modelled on line bundles over the projective line. We classify these structures on primary Hopf surfaces. We write out the developing map and holonomy morphism of each of these structures explicitly on each primary Hopf surface.

Abstract:The first goal of this article is to give a complete classification (up to Real biholomorphisms) of Real primary Hopf surfaces $(H,s)$, and, for any such pair, to describe in detail the following naturally associated objects : the group $\mathrm{Aut}_h(H,s)$ of Real automorphisms, the Real Picard group $(\mathrm{Pic}(H),\hat s^*)$, and the Picard group of Real holomorphic line bundles $\mathrm{Pic}_{\mathbb{R}}(H)$. Our second goal: the classification of Real primary Hopf surfaces up to equivariant diffeomorphisms, which will allow us to describe explicitly in each case the real locus $H(\mathbb{R})=H^s$ and the quotient $H/\langle s\rangle$.

Lectures on the mapping class group of a surface

Abstract:In these lectures, we give the proofs of two basic theorems on surface topology, namely, the work of Dehn and Lickorish on generating the mapping class group of a surface by Dehn-twists; and the work of Dehn and Nielsen on relating self-homeomorphisms of a surface and automorphisms of the fundamental group of the surface. Some of the basic materials on hyperbolic geometry and large scale geometry are introduced.

Abstract:We show that finite-type surfaces are characterized by a topological analog of the Hopf property. Namely, an oriented surface $\Sigma$ is of finite-type if and only if every proper map $f\colon\Sigma\to \Sigma$ of degree one is homotopic to a homeomorphism.

Abstract:In this paper we explore new relations between Algebraic Topology and the theory of Hopf Algebras. For an arbitrary topological space $X$, the loop space homology $H_*(\Omega\Sigma X; \coefZ)$ is a Hopf algebra. We introduce a new homotopy invariant of a topological space $X$ taking for its value the isomorphism class (over the integers) of the Hopf algebra $H_*(\Omega\Sigma X; \coefZ)$. This invariant is trivial if and only if the Hopf algebra $H_*(\Omega\Sigma X; \coefZ)$ is isomorphic to a Lie-Hopf algebra, that is, to a primitively generated Hopf algebra. We show that for a given $X$ these invariants are obstructions to the existence of a homotopy equivalence $\Sigma X\simeq \Sigma^2Y$ for some space $Y$. Further on, using the notion of Hopf algebras, we establish new structural properties of the cohomology ring, in particular, of the cup product. For example, using the fact that the suspension of a polyhedral product $X$ is a double suspension, we obtain a strong condition on the cohomology ring structure of $X$. This gives an important application in toric topology. For an algebra to be realised as the cohomology ring of a moment-angle manifold $\Z_P$ associated to a simple polytope $P$, we found an obstruction in the Hopf algebra $H_*(\Omega\Sigma \Z_P)$. In addition, we use homotopy decompositions to study particular Hopf algebras.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent work of Algom-Kfir and Bestinva introducing the mapping class group of an infinite graph via proper homotopy equivalences, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a surface to be properly homotopy equivalent to a graph. We consider second-countable orientable surfaces that are possibly infinite-type and have noncompact boundary. For surfaces proper homotopy equivalent to graphs, we explore the basic properties of the induced map between the mapping class groups of the surface and the graph. We view this induced map as the basis of a Dehn-Nielsen-Baer analog in the setting of infinite-type surfaces.

Abstract:We apply the ‘non-collapsing’ technique, previously applied by Brendle in the proof of the Lawson conjecture and by Andrews and Li in the proof of the Pinkall-Sterling conjecture, to higher dimensional hypersurfaces satisfying a linear relation between the principal curvatures, under the additional assumption that the hypersurface has two distinct principal curvatures at each point. As special cases, the result gives simple new proofs of results of Otsuki for minimal hypersurfaces, and of Li and Wei for hypersurfaces with vanishing mth mean curvature.

Abstract:We introduce a semi-algebraic structure on the set  of all isotopy classes of non-separating simple closed curves in any compact oriented surface and show that the structure is finitely generated. As a consequence, we produce a natural finite dimensional linear representation of the mapping class group of the surface. Applications to the Teichmüller space, Thurston's measured lamination space, the harmonic Beltrami differentials, and the first cohomology groups of the surface are discussed.

Abstract:We study smooth, proper embeddings of noncompact surfaces in 4-manifolds, focusing on exotic planes and annuli, i.e., embeddings pairwise homeomorphic to the standard embeddings of R^2 and R^2-int D^2 in R^4. We encounter two uncountable classes of exotic planes, with radically different properties. One class is simple enough that we exhibit explicit level diagrams of them without 2-handles. Diagrams from the other class seem intractable to draw, and require infinitely many 2-handles. We show that every compact surface embedded rel nonempty boundary in the 4-ball has interior pairwise homeomorphic to infinitely many smooth, proper embeddings in R^4. We also see that the almost-smooth, compact, embedded surfaces produced in 4-manifolds by Freedman theory must have singularities requiring infinitely many local minima in their radial functions. We construct exotic planes with uncountable group actions injecting into the pairwise mapping class group. This work raises many questions, some of which we list.

Abstract:We show that surfaces such that the natural projections of the unit normal bundles are harmonic morphisms are composed of minimal points and totally umbilical points. As its application, we find a harmonic map from the torus to the complex quadric in CP3 such that the projection map of the associated sphere bundle constructed by Gudmundsson is not a harmonic morphism. This contrasts sharply with the situation for holomorphic maps. We also establish sufficient conditions for reducing the codimension of an isometric immersion with conformal second fundamental form.

Abstract:It is an important problem in topology to verify whether two embeddings are isotopic. This work proposes an algorithm for computing Haefliger-Wu invariants for isotopy based on algebraic topological methods. Given a simplicial complex embedded in the Euclidean space, the deleted product of it is the direct product with diagonal removed. The Gauss map transforms the deleted product to the unit sphere. The pull-back of the generator of the cohomology group of the sphere defines characteristic class of the isotopy of the embedding. By using Mayer Vietoris sequence and Künneth theorem, the computational algorithm can be greatly simplified. The authors prove the ranks of homology groups of the deleted product of a closed surface and give explicit construction of the generators of the homology groups of the deleted product. Numerical experimental results show the efficiency and efficacy of the proposed method.

Abstract:We study the closure of horocycles on rank 1 nonpositively curved surfaces with finitely generated fundamental group. Each horocycle is closed or dense on a certain subset of the unit tangent bundle. In fact, we classify each half-horocycle in terms of the associated geodesic rays. We also determine the nonwandering set of the horocyclic flow and characterize the surfaces admitting a minimal set for this flow.

Abstract:This paper considers some algebraic surfaces that can deform to planar Zappatic stable surfaces with a unique singularity of type En. We prove that the Galois covers of these surfaces are all simply connected of general type, for n >= 4, and we give a formula for Chern numbers of such Galois covers. As an application, we prove that such surfaces do not exist for n>30. Furthermore, Kollar improves the result to n>9 in Appendix 5.

Abstract:Among other things, we prove the following two topological statements about closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. First, every rational second homology class of a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has a positive integral multiple represented by an oriented connected closed pi(1)-injectively immersed quasi-Fuchsian subsurface. Second, every rationally null-homologous, pi(1)-injectively immersed oriented closed 1-submanifold in a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has an equidegree finite cover which bounds an oriented connected compact pi(1)-injectively immersed quasi-Fuchsian subsurface. In, we exploit techniques developed by Kahn and Markovic but we only distill geometric and topological ingredients from those papers, so no hard analysis is involved in this article.

Abstract:For an odd prime $p$, we determine the $p$-primary component of the Farrell cohomology of the pure mapping class groups of a non orientable surface of genus $p$ with $k\geqslant 1$ marked points. To do this, we classify conjugacy classes of subgroups of order $p$ of the pure mapping class group of a non orientable surface of any genus with marked points. This is obtained by extending the notion of topological equivalence for surface kernel epimorphisms of non Euclidean crystallographic groups, adapting it to the setting of surfaces with marked points.
