Abstract:We show that finite-type surfaces are characterized by a topological analog of the Hopf property. Namely, an oriented surface $\Sigma$ is of finite-type if and only if every proper map $f\colon\Sigma\to \Sigma$ of degree one is homotopic to a homeomorphism.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent work of Algom-Kfir and Bestinva introducing the mapping class group of an infinite graph via proper homotopy equivalences, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a surface to be properly homotopy equivalent to a graph. We consider second-countable orientable surfaces that are possibly infinite-type and have noncompact boundary. For surfaces proper homotopy equivalent to graphs, we explore the basic properties of the induced map between the mapping class groups of the surface and the graph. We view this induced map as the basis of a Dehn-Nielsen-Baer analog in the setting of infinite-type surfaces.

Abstract:An infinite-type surface $\Sigma$ is of type $\mathcal{S}$ if it has an isolated puncture $p$ and admits shift maps. This includes all infinite-type surfaces with an isolated puncture outside of two sporadic classes. Given such a surface, we construct an infinite family of intrinsically infinite-type mapping classes that act loxodromically on the relative arc graph $\mathcal{A}(\Sigma, p)$. J. Bavard produced such an element for the plane minus a Cantor set, and our result gives the first examples of such mapping classes for all other surfaces of type $\mathcal{S}$. The elements we construct are the composition of three shift maps on $\Sigma$, and we give an alternate characterization of these elements as a composition of a pseudo-Anosov on a finite-type subsurface of $\Sigma$ and a standard shift map. We then explicitly find their limit points on the boundary of $\mathcal{A}(\Sigma,p)$ and their limiting geodesic laminations. Finally, we show that these infinite-type elements can be used to prove that Map$(\Sigma,p)$ has an infinite-dimensional space of quasimorphisms.

Abstract:Without leaving finite mathematics and using finite topological spaces only, we give a definition of homeomorphisms of finite abstract simplicial complexes or finite graphs. Besides exploring the definition in various contexts, we add some remarks like that the general Lefschetz formula works for any continuous map on any finite topological space. We also noted that any higher order Wu characteristic as well as their cohomology are topological invariants which are not homotopy invariants. Energy theorems allow to express these topological invariants in terms of interaction energies of local open sets.

Abstract:The loop graph of an infinite type surface is an infinite diameter hyperbolic graph first studied in detail by Juliette Bavard. An important open problem in the study of infinite type surfaces is to describe the boundary of the loop graph as a space of geodesic laminations. We approach this problem by constructing the first examples of 2-filling rays on infinite type surfaces. Such rays accumulate onto geodesic laminations which are in some sense filling, but without strong enough properties to correspond to points in the boundary of the loop graph. We give multiple constructions using both a hands-on combinatorial approach and an approach using train tracks and automorphisms of flat surfaces. In addition, our approaches are sufficiently robust to describe all 2-filling rays with certain other basic properties as well as to produce uncountably many distinct mapping class group orbits.

Abstract:A topological space (not necessarily simply connected) is said to have finite homotopy rank-sum if the sum of the ranks of all higher homotopy groups (from the second homotopy group onward) is finite. In this article, we characterize the smooth compact complex Kaehler surfaces having finite homotopy rank-sum. We also prove the Steinness of the universal cover of these surfaces assuming holomorphic convexity of the universal cover.

Abstract:We associate to triangulations of infinite type surface a type of flip graph where simultaneous flips are allowed. Our main focus is on understanding exactly when two triangulations can be related by a sequence of flips. A consequence of our results is that flip graphs for infinite type surfaces have uncountably many connected components.

Abstract:Among other things, we prove the following two topological statements about closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. First, every rational second homology class of a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has a positive integral multiple represented by an oriented connected closed pi(1)-injectively immersed quasi-Fuchsian subsurface. Second, every rationally null-homologous, pi(1)-injectively immersed oriented closed 1-submanifold in a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has an equidegree finite cover which bounds an oriented connected compact pi(1)-injectively immersed quasi-Fuchsian subsurface. In, we exploit techniques developed by Kahn and Markovic but we only distill geometric and topological ingredients from those papers, so no hard analysis is involved in this article.

Abstract:Given a positive function F on S 2 which satisfies a convexity condition, we define a function ${H^{F}_{\mathbb{C}}}$ for surfaces in ${\mathbb{R}^3}$ which is a generalization of the usual mean curvature function. We prove that an immersed topological sphere in ${\mathbb{R}^3}$ with ${H^{F}_{\mathbb{C}}}$ = constant is the Wulff shape, up to translations and homotheties.

Abstract:This note answers some questions on holomorphic curves and their distribution in an algebraic surface of positive index. More specifically, we exploit the existence of natural negatively curved "pseudo-Finsler" metrics on a surface S of general type whose Chern numbers satisfy c(2)1>2c2 to show that a holomorphic map of a Riemann surface to S whose image is not in any rational or elliptic curve must satisfy a distance decreasing property with respect to these metrics. We show as a consequence that such a map extends over isolated punctures. So assuming that the Riemann surface is obtained from a compact one of genus q by removing a finite number of points, then the map is actually algebraic and defines a compact holomorphic curve in S. Furthermore, the degree of the curve with respect to a fixed polarization is shown to be bounded above by a multiple of q - 1 irrespective of the map.

Abstract:Heinz Hopf's famous fibrations of the 2n+1-sphere by great circles, the 4n+3-sphere by great 3-spheres, and the 15-sphere by great 7-spheres have a number of interesting properties. Besides providing the first examples of homotopically nontrivial maps from one sphere to another sphere of lower dimension, they all share two striking features: (1) Their fibers are parallel, in the sense that any two fibers are a constant distance apart, and (2) The fibrations are highly symmetric. For example, there is a fiber-preserving isometry of each total space which takes any given fiber to any other one. Hopf fibrations have been characterized up to isometry by the first property above, initially among all fibrations of spheres by great subspheres, and later in the stronger sense among all fibrations of spheres by smooth subspheres. In this paper, we show that the Hopf fibrations are also characterized by their "fiberwise homogeneity" expressed above in (2), and in the strong sense among all fibrations of spheres by smooth subspheres. In the special case of the 3-sphere fibered by great circles, we prove something stronger. We prove that a fibration of a connected open set by great circles which is locally fiberwise homogeneous is part of a Hopf fibration.

Abstract:We prove the existence of finite groups acting freely as orientation‐preserving homeomorphisms on closed orientable surfaces that extend as a group of homeomorphisms of some compact orientable 3‐manifold but that cannot extend to a handlebody. This solves a basic problem in low‐dimensional equivariant topology going back to the work of Reni and Zimmermann in the mid‐1990s.

Abstract:We introduce surfaces at infinity, a class of rational surfaces linked to curves with only one place at infinity. The cone of curves of these surfaces is finite polyhedral and minimally generated. We also introduce the $\delta$-semigroup of a surface at infinity and consider the set $\mathcal{S}$ of surfaces at infinity having the same $\delta$-semigroup. We study how the generators of the cone of curves of surfaces in $\mathcal{S}$ behave.

Abstract:Putman and Wieland conjectured that if Σ∼→Σ is a finite branched cover between closed oriented surfaces of sufficiently high genus, then the orbits of all nonzero elements of H1(Σ∼;Q) under the action of lifts to Σ∼ of mapping classes on Σ are infinite. We prove that this holds if H1(Σ∼;Q) is generated by the homology classes of lifts of simple closed curves on Σ . We also prove that the subspace of H1(Σ∼;Q) spanned by such lifts is a symplectic subspace. Finally, simple closed curves lie on subsurfaces homeomorphic to 2‐holed spheres, and we prove that H1(Σ∼;Q) is generated by the homology classes of lifts of loops on Σ lying on subsurfaces homeomorphic to 3‐holed spheres.

Topologically trivial proper 2-knots

Abstract:We study smooth, proper embeddings of noncompact surfaces in 4-manifolds, focusing on exotic planes and annuli, i.e., embeddings pairwise homeomorphic to the standard embeddings of R^2 and R^2-int D^2 in R^4. We encounter two uncountable classes of exotic planes, with radically different properties. One class is simple enough that we exhibit explicit level diagrams of them without 2-handles. Diagrams from the other class seem intractable to draw, and require infinitely many 2-handles. We show that every compact surface embedded rel nonempty boundary in the 4-ball has interior pairwise homeomorphic to infinitely many smooth, proper embeddings in R^4. We also see that the almost-smooth, compact, embedded surfaces produced in 4-manifolds by Freedman theory must have singularities requiring infinitely many local minima in their radial functions. We construct exotic planes with uncountable group actions injecting into the pairwise mapping class group. This work raises many questions, some of which we list.
