Abstract:Suppose $G$ is a finitely generated infinite group, and $\mathcal G$ is a graph of groups decomposition of $G$ such that the edge groups are finite. This paper establishes that the topology of the Floyd boundary of $G$ is uniquely determined by the topology of the Floyd boundary of each vertex group of $\mathcal G$.

Abstract:We construct the first examples of finitely presented simple groups of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the real line. Our examples are also of type $F_{\infty}$, have infinite geometric dimension, and admit a nontrivial homogeneous quasimorphism (and hence have infinite commutator width).

Abstract:We characterize which groups splitting as finite graphs of free groups with cyclic edge groups are residually finite. Such a group $G$ is residually finite if and only if all its Baumslag-Solitar subgroups are residually finite. From a presentation of $G$, we construct a finite labeled graph $\Gamma$, and show that residual finiteness of $G$ is equivalent to an easily-detectable property of this graph. This characterization proves a conjecture of Wise.

Abstract:Consider a one-ended word-hyperbolic group. If it is the fundamental group of a graph of free groups with cyclic edge groups then either it is the fundamental group of a surface or it contains a finitely generated one-ended subgroup of infinite index. As a corollary, the same holds for limit groups. We also obtain a characterisation of surfaces with boundary among free groups equipped with peripheral structures.

An infinite family of exotic subgroups of hyperbolic groups

Abstract:We construct the first known infinite family of quasi-isometry classes of subgroups of hyperbolic groups which are not hyperbolic and are of type $\mathrm{FP}(\mathbb{Q})$. We give a simple criterion for producing many non-hyperbolic subgroups of hyperbolic groups with strong finiteness properties. We also observe that local hyperbolicity and algebraic fibring are mutually exclusive in higher dimensions.

Abstract:In this paper the weighted fundamental circuits intersection matrix of an edge-labeled graph is introduced for computing the critical groups for homeomorphism classes of graphs. As an application, it is proved that for any given finite connected simple graph there is a homeomorphic graph with cyclic critical group.

Abstract:Without leaving finite mathematics and using finite topological spaces only, we give a definition of homeomorphisms of finite abstract simplicial complexes or finite graphs. Besides exploring the definition in various contexts, we add some remarks like that the general Lefschetz formula works for any continuous map on any finite topological space. We also noted that any higher order Wu characteristic as well as their cohomology are topological invariants which are not homotopy invariants. Energy theorems allow to express these topological invariants in terms of interaction energies of local open sets.

Abstract:In this article we consider diffeomorphism groups of manifolds with smooth boundary. We show that the diffeomorphism groups of the manifold and its boundary fit into a short exact sequence which admits local sections. In other words, they form an infinite-dimensional fibre bundle. Manifolds with boundary are of interest in numerical analysis and with a view towards applications in machine learning we establish controllability results for families of vector fields. This generalises older results due to Agrachev and Caponigro in the boundary-less case. Our results show in particular that the diffeomorphism group of a manifold with smooth boundary is generated by the image of the exponential map.

Abstract:We show that for a smooth, closed 2-connected manifold $M$ of dimension $d \geq 6$, the topological mapping class group $\pi_0 \mathrm{Homeo}(M)$ is residually finite, in contrast to the situation for the smooth mapping class group $\pi_0 \mathrm{Diff}(M)$. Combined with a result of Sullivan, this implies that $\pi_0 \mathrm{Homeo}(M)$ is an arithmetic group. The proof uses embedding calculus, and is of independent interest: we show that the $T_k$-mapping class group, $\pi_0 T_k \mathrm{Diff}(M)$, is residually finite, for all $k \in \mathbb{N}$. The statement on the topological mapping class group is then deduced from the Weiss fibre sequence, convergence of the embedding calculus tower and smoothing theory.

Abstract:We prove finiteness properties for groups of homeomorphisms that have finitely many "singular points", and we describe the normal structure of such groups. As an application, we prove that every countable abelian group can be embedded into a finitely presented simple group, verifying the Boone-Higman conjecture for countable abelian groups. Indeed, we describe a specific 2-generated, $\mathrm{F}_\infty$ simple group $V\mathcal{A}$ of homeomorphisms of the Cantor set that contains every countable abelian group. As a second application, we prove that if $G$ is a bounded automata group then the associated Röver-Nekrashevych groups $V_{d,r}G$ have type $\mathrm{F}_\infty$, verifying a conjecture of Nekrashevych for a large class of contracting self-similar groups. Among others, this result applies to Röver-Nekrashevych groups associated to Gupta-Sidki groups and the basilica group.

Abstract:We prove that, for any countable acylindrically hyperbolic group G, there exists a generating set S of G such that the corresponding Cayley graph is hyperbolic, , the natural action of G on is acylindrical and the natural action of G on the Gromov boundary is hyperfinite. This result broadens the class of groups that admit a non-elementary acylindrical action on a hyperbolic space with a hyperfinite boundary action.

Abstract:End-spaces of infinite graphs naturally generalise the Freudenthal boundary and sit at the interface between graph theory, geometric group theory and topology. Our main result is that every end-space can topologically be represented by a special order tree. Our main proof ingredient is a structure theorem that we introduce, which carves out the order-tree-like structure of any graph in such a way that there is a natural bijection between the ends of the graph and the limit-type down-closed chains of the order-tree.

Abstract:The loop graph of an infinite type surface is an infinite diameter hyperbolic graph first studied in detail by Juliette Bavard. An important open problem in the study of infinite type surfaces is to describe the boundary of the loop graph as a space of geodesic laminations. We approach this problem by constructing the first examples of 2-filling rays on infinite type surfaces. Such rays accumulate onto geodesic laminations which are in some sense filling, but without strong enough properties to correspond to points in the boundary of the loop graph. We give multiple constructions using both a hands-on combinatorial approach and an approach using train tracks and automorphisms of flat surfaces. In addition, our approaches are sufficiently robust to describe all 2-filling rays with certain other basic properties as well as to produce uncountably many distinct mapping class group orbits.

Abstract:We prove that the groups of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms and diffeomorphisms of $\mathbb{R}^n$ are boundedly acyclic, in all regularities. This is the first full computation of the bounded cohomology of a transformation group that is not compactly supported, and it implies that many characteristic classes of flat $\mathbb{R}^n$- and $S^n$-bundles are unbounded. We obtain the same result for the group of homeomorphisms of the disc that restrict to the identity on the boundary, and for the homeomorphism group of the non-compact Cantor set. In the appendix, Alexander Kupers proves a controlled version of the annulus theorem which we use to study the bounded cohomology of the homeomorphism group of the discs.

Abstract:Let (Γ,P) be a relatively hyperbolic group pair that is relatively one ended. Then, the Bowditch boundary of (Γ,P) is locally connected. Bowditch previously established this conclusion under the additional assumption that all peripheral subgroups are finitely presented, either one or two ended, and contain no infinite torsion subgroups. We remove these restrictions; we make no restriction on the cardinality of Γ and no restriction on the peripheral subgroups P∈P .

Abstract:The fine curve graph was introduced as a geometric tool to study homeomorphisms of surfaces. In this paper we study the Gromov boundary of this space and the local topology near points associated with certain foliations and laminations. We then give several applications including finding dynamically explicit elements with positive stable commutator length, and proving a Tits alternative for subgroups of $\textrm{Homeo}(S)$ containing a pseudo-Anosov map, generalizing a result of Hurtado-Xue.

Abstract:We investigate the mapping class group of an orientable $\omega$-bounded surface. Such a surface splits, by Nyikos's Bagpipe Theorem, into a union of a bag (a compact surface with boundary) and finitely many long pipes. The subgroup consisting of classes of homeomorphisms fixing the boundary of the bag is a normal subgroup and is a homomorphic image of the product of mapping class groups of the bag and the pipes.

Abstract:Let Diff(N) and Homeo(N) denote the smooth and topological group of automorphisms respectively that fix the boundary of the n-manifold N, pointwise. We show that the (n-4)-th homotopy group of Homeo(S^1 \times D^{n-1}) is not finitely-generated for n >= 4 and in particular the topological mapping-class group of S^1\times D^3 is infinitely generated. We apply this to show that the smooth and topological automorphism groups of finite-volume hyperbolic n-manifolds (when n >= 4) do not have the homotopy-type of finite CW-complexes, results previously known for n >= 11 by Farrell and Jones. In particular, we show that if N is a closed hyperbolic n-manifold, and if Diff_0(N) represents the subgroup of diffeomorphisms that are homotopic to the identity, then the (n-4)-th homotopy group of Diff_0(N) is infinitely generated and hence if n=4, then \pi_0\Diff_0(N) is infinitely generated with similar results holding topologically.

Abstract:We show that for every odd prime $q$, there exists an infinite family $\{M_i\}_{i=1}^{\infty}$ of topological 4-manifolds that are all stably homeomorphic to one another, all the manifolds $M_i$ have isometric rank one equivariant intersection pairings and boundary $L(2q, 1) # (S^1 \times S^2)$, but they are pairwise not homotopy equivalent via any homotopy equivalence that restricts to a homotopy equivalence of the boundary.
