Abstract:The development situation of wind power generation and forming process and requirement of wind turbine blade were briefly introduced.MFE-VARIM-200 epoxy vinyl ester resin for wind turbine blade was developed.The viscosity,gel time,curing shrinkage rate and properties of cured product were tested.The results showed that the viscosity of MFE-VARIM-200 was lower than 0.2 Pa·s at 25 ℃.The gel time was longer than 2 h and the linear shrinkage was less than 0.3%.MFE-VARIM-200 met the vacuum infusion process requirement and the mechanical properties of cured resin could meet the requirement of matrix resin of wind turbine blade.
Synthesis and Performance of Novel Fluorine-Containing Epoxy Vinyl Ester Resin

Abstract:A novel fluorine-containing epoxy vinyl ester resin（F-EVER） was synthesized using fluorine-containing epoxy（F-EP）,acrylic acid（AA） and methacrylic acid（MAA） as monomer.The resin was modified by maleic acid（MA）,FT-IR spectra,TGA and mechanical properties.The corrosive resistance of the cured resin was also investigated.Results showed that the F-EVER had best performance when resin was synthesized under DMF as catalyst,molar ratio of carboxyl groups to epoxy groups was 0.9,molar ratio of F-EP to MA was more than 0.1,and the mass fraction of polymerization inhibitor was 0.03%.Furthermore,both thermal and corrosive resistance were promoted due to introduction of the element fluorine.

Abstract:The experimental researches and theoretic descriptions of the resistance-mechanical effect (RME) for polymer-matrix conducting composites were reviewed. RME was affected by many factors including the characteristics and the interaction of the filler and the matrix, the filler volume fraction, the applied stress or strain, as well as the processing conditions, the environmental temperature and humidity. For the fiber-reinforced polymer composites, it also depends on the aspect ratio and the orientation of the fibers with respect to the load direction. Due to the complexity of RME, its stability and reproducibility were usually not satisfactory for engineering applications. Several investigations have shown that such disadvantages could be partially overcome with mechanical preconditioning or by choosing appropriate filler with certain content. Finally, we proposed our suggestions on further researches in this area.

Abstract:Styrene (ST) is a common volatile petroleum-based diluent in epoxy-based vinyl ester (VE) resin system. In recent years, a number of renewable molecules, such as eugenol, have been methacrylated and products behaved lower volatility property than ST. However, these renewable resin systems exhibited decreased thermal performance, especially glass transition temperature (T-g). Therefore, these resin systems cannot be used in hash environment. In our work, we used isosorbide to react with methacrylic anhydride and the synthesized monomer was mixed with VE resin to produce new bio-based resin system-MIVE. Volatility, viscosity and thermomechanical properties of MIVE and VE/ST resin were examined. The results indicated that MIVE had excellent low volatility property and T-g of MIVE can achieve 210 degrees C. Furthermore, we discussed the approach to improve heat resistant property of resin system. Acrylates with vinyl groups, including hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), pentaerythritol triacrylate (PETA) and dipentaerythritol pentaacrylate (DPHA), was grafted to MIVE respectively. Dynamic thermomechanical analysis (DMA), heat distortion temperature (HDT) and thermogravimetric (TGA) tests were used to measure thermal performance of grafted resin systems. The results showed T-g of grafted MIVE ranged from 210 to 240 degrees C, HDT ranged from 160 to 230 degrees C and initial decomposition temperature (IDT) (5% weight loss) were over 400 degrees C. Overall, studies showed that grafting acrylates with vinyl groups to VE was an effective way to improve the heat resistant properties of bio-based resin systems.

Abstract:The linear and high-molecular-weight poly(hydroxyaminoether) was synthesized by using relatively low molecular weight difunctional epoxy resin and ethanolamine as monomers.The structure of samples were characterized by FT-IR spectra and 1H-NMR spectra.The thermal and mechanical properties were measured by thermogravimetric analysis(TGA),differential scanning calorimeter(DSC)and instron testing machine.The results showed that the obtained polymer had good processability with good tensile strength.

Abstract:The silicone resin is synthesized with hydrolysis-polycondensation method from phenyl and methyl ehlorosilane,and the studies on the gel properties and viscosity of silicone resin are carried out.The result shows that the methyl phenyl silicone can be used as matrix resins for composite ma- terial.It is found that the silicone resin has excellent thermal stability by using thermo-gravimetrie analysis (TG),differential thermo-gravimetric anal- ysis (DTG)and isothermal TG.The shear and bending tests of glass fiber composite material prepared with methyl phenyl silicone as matrix are carried out,and the result shows that the glass fiber/methyl phenyl silicone composite materials have better mechanical properties.

Abstract:In this study, a biobased vinyl ester resin monomer with Schiff base is prepared from protocatechualdehyde. The monomer is dissolved into styrene to prepare the biobased resin designated as OBTMAR. The resin is perfused into the fiberglass to prepare a fiber-reinforced composite (GFOBTMAR). The commercial vinyl ester resin (VER901) and its fiberglass-reinforced composite (GFVER901) are prepared as the control. T-g values of OBTMAR and GFOBTMAR are 219 and 222 degrees C, respectively, which are far higher than those of VER901 (127 degrees C) and its composites (131 degrees C). And there is no separation between the resin and fiberglass for GFOBTMAR due to excellent fiberglass wettability. Cone calorimeter test suggests that GFOBTMAR shows the best flame retardancy and lowest smoke release. The related mechanism of flame retardancy is studied in detail. This work presents an effective strategy for developing fiberglass-reinforced vinyl ester resin composites with high T-g, superior flame retardancy and mechanical properties for application.

Abstract:Tetramethylbisphenol F epoxy resin (TMBPFE) was successfully synthesized based on tetramethylbisphenol F (TMBPF) and epichlorohydrin with tetrabutylammonium bromide as the catalyst. The structure of TMBPFE was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance and elemental analysis. Then, a mixed system composed of TMBPFE and 4,4'-diglycidyl (3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbiphenyl) epoxy (TMBP) was prepared by a melting method, i.e. without any solvent. Both the TMBPFE and the mixed system were cured using 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl methane (DDM) as the curing agent. The thermal properties of TMBPFE and the mixed system were studied using differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed that the TMBP mixed in the TMBPFE matrix had little effect on the thermal properties of TMBPFE. However, the glass transition temperature improved markedly with increasing content of TMBP. Moreover, the TGA results showed that the degradation characteristics of TMBPFE resins did not seriously decrease when TMBP was incorporated into the TMBPFE matrix, although there are large steric hindrance biphenyl groups in TMBP. Both TMBPFE and the TMBPFE/TMBP system have potential applications in electrical and electronic fields. Copyright (C) 2011 Society of Chemical Industry

Abstract:In this work, the sustainable and biodegradable flame retardant epoxy resin was designed and prepared to replace resource-limited petrochemicals, especially, bisphenol A type epoxy resin (DGEBA). A renewable chemical, vanillin was condensation to produce Schiff-based compound (MAV) employing the novel epoxy resin (MVE) through the epoxidation reaction. The epoxy equivalent of MVE was approximately 217 g/eq and used non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to study the curing kinetics of MVE/DDM (4,4′-Diaminodiphenylmethane). After curing by DDM, they exhibit outstanding mechanical property and a residual char rate as high as 41.77%, excellent inherent flame retardancy and limited oxygen index (LOI) value higher than 34%, far superior to DGEBA. The total heat release (THR) and smoke release rate (SPR) of MVE/DDM decreased by 67.44% and 64.69% compared with DGEBA/DDM, respectively. The mechanisms for the enhancement of flame retardancy by intrinsic flame retardant epoxy resin were investigated. Moreover, the sustainable epoxy crosslinking could degrade completely benefited from the structure of the Schiff base in the moderate conditions (THF: H2O = 6: 4, 50 °C) within few hours. Overall, this work contributes a multifunctional vanillin-based epoxy monomer and environmentally friendly thermosets with high mechanical property and enhanced flame retardancy.

Abstract:Epoxy and maleimide resins are two of the major thermosetting resins used in high performance structural materials. The hybrid resins of epoxy and maleimide should bring about the characteristics of these two resins together in a single resin compound, and result in materials having attractive properties. This article reviews our recent efforts in developing new epoxy/maleimide resins. The resins obtained showed low meting point, wide processing windows and good solubility in common solvents to indicate their good processing properties. High glass transition temperatures above 210 degrees C, excellent thermal stability and self-extinguishing behavior were also observed with the prepared resins.

Abstract:A tetrafluoroethylene-propylene rubber(FEPM)/fluorosilicone rubber(FMVQ) blend was prepared,and its properties were investigated.The results showed that FEPM and FMVQ could be co-vulcanized.Compared with FEPM,the low temperature resistance of FEPM/FMVQ blend was improved,but the tensile strength was decreased,the compression set was increased,the thermal aging property and thermal stability were decreased.

Abstract:The production of epoxy resins with low dissipation factor ( D f ) remains an alluring yet challenging task. In this work, we successfully synthesized a novel resveratrol based active ester (ResE) by a one-step method using the renewable resveratrol as raw material. The structure of ResE was characterized using FTIR and NMR techniques. The phenol biphenyl epoxy (SQXN-324) was cured with ResE, the SQXN/ResE system boasted a favorable dielectric constant ( D k ) of 2.78 and dissipation factor ( D f ) of 3.5 × 10 −3 at a high frequency of 10 GHz. Additionally, the SQXN/ResE system exhibited impressive thermal performances, with a 5 % weight loss temperature ( T 5% ) of 368 °C, a residual carbon of 34 wt% at 800 °C in N 2 atmosphere, a glass transition temperature ( T g ) of 154 °C, a coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of 61.9 ppm/°C from 25 °C to T g and the CTE of 130 ppm/°C from T g to 250 °C. These findings suggested that a biomass curing agent for epoxy with low D f and high thermal performances were successfully developed, it had potential applications in the high frequency communication field and microelectronics industry.

Abstract:The emerging biomass-based epoxy vitrimers hold great potential to fulfill the requirements for sustainable development of society. Since the existence of dynamic chemical bonds in vitrimers often reduces both the thermal and mechanical properties of epoxy resins, it is challenging to produce recyclable epoxy vitrimers with both excellent mechanical properties and good thermal stability. Herein, a monomer 4-(((5-(hydroxymethyl)furan-2-yl)methylene)amino)phenol (FCN) containing furan ring with potential to form high density of hydrogen bonding among repeating units is designed and copolymerized with glycerol triglycidyl ether to yield epoxy resin (FCN-GTE), which intrinsically has dual hydrogen bond networks, dynamic imine structure and resultant high performance. Importantly, as compared to the BPA-GTE, the FCN-GTE exhibits significantly improved mechanical properties owing to the increased density of hydrogen bond network and physical crosslinking interaction. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculation and in situ FTIR analysis is conducted to decipher the formation mechanism of hydrogen bond network. In addition, the FCN-GTE possesses superior UV shielding, chemical degradation, and recyclability because of the existence of abundant imine bonds. Notably, the FCN-GTE-based carbon fiber composites could be completely recycled in an amine solution. This study provides a facile strategy for synthesizing recyclable biomass-based high-performance epoxy vitrimers and carbon fiber composites.

Abstract:Traditional epoxy resin materials are widely used in coatings, composite materials, electronic packaging materials, etc. They are usually made of unsustainable fossil resources and cannot be recycled under mild conditions. Degradable thermosetting resins with dynamic covalent structure provide a potential solution to this conflict. In this paper, using biomass energy vanillin, m-xylylenediamine and 1, 6-hexanediamine as raw materials, two dynamic imine bond curing agents were synthesized, and then cured with DGEBA to prepare two bio-based imine epoxy vitrimers. The thermal and mechanical properties of two imine epoxy vitrimers were studied and compared in detail. Results showed that the two types of polymers exhibit excellent thermal stability and solvent resistance. At the same time, the tensile strength, modulus and elongation at break were comparable to or even better than those of conventional bisphenol A epoxy resin. In addition, due to the hydrolysis of the dynamic imine bonds, vitrimers had degradable characteristic, and its degradation also exhibited temperature, solvent and acidity dependence. More importantly, the recyclable carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites made of these two vitrimers could be completely degraded under weak acid conditions, and the nondestructive recycling of carbon fiber composites could be realized. We envision that this vitrimers with simple process, excellent comprehensive properties and degradability will make it a potential candidate for applications in sustainable structural materials.

Abstract:In order to introduce fluorine-containing functional groups into epoxy resins to stably enhance the surface electrical properties of thin films, the trifluoromethyl group containing diglycidyl ethers bisphenol A (F-DGEBA) monomer was prepared by a simple and environmentally friendly method. Further, the film was obtained by blending the prepared monomers with DGEBA in different proportions and curing at high temperature with methyl tetrahydrophthalic anhydride (MTHPA). The prepared films not only have improved hydrophobic properties, but also exhibit better surface electrical properties. With the increase of the content of F-DGEBA, the epoxy resin films have higher surface insulation strength and better potential decay performance, which is due to the existence of –CF3 groups changing the distribution of deep and shallow traps. Compared with the non-fluorinated film, the flashover voltage of the fluorinated film with the best electrical properties is increased by 32.2%, and the potential decay rate is also much faster.

Abstract:Flame-retardant epoxy resins with tough, transparent, ultraviolet shielding, and low dielectric properties have fascinating prospects in electronic and electrical applications, but it is still challenging at present. In this work, a bio-based macromolecule was synthesized from vanillin (a lignin derivative), phenyl dichlorophosphate, 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene 10-oxide (DOPO), and poly(propylene glycol) bis(2-aminopropyl ether). The bio-based macromolecule, namely, MFR, was designed and added to the epoxy resin (EP). The cured EP containing 15 wt% MFR (i.e., EP/MFR15) exhibits excellent flame retardancy with an Underwriter Laboratory 94 (UL-94) V-0 rating and a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 29.2 %. Furthermore, the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release rate (THR) are drastically reduced by 59.5 % and 40.7 %, respectively. Meanwhile, EP/MFR15 shows 20.3 % and 43.8 % improvements in tensile strength and toughness, respectively. Moreover, MFR simultaneously endows EP with accessional ultraviolet shielding performance and low dielectric constant without sacrificing transparency. This work provides a promising strategy for fabricating a bio-based macromolecular flame retardant and preparing a high-performance EP composite with versatile properties.
