Abstract:The demand for controllable fragrance materials is substantial owing to their potential to impart enduring scents in a variety of applications. However, the practical application of such materials has been limited by challenges in tunable morphogenesis, structural variability, and adaptability to diverse conditions. In our study, we introduce a hybrid living material that integrates a genetically engineered strain of Kluyveromyces marxianus CBS6556 with an adaptive hydrogel. The engineered K. marxianus achieved temperature stability in 2-phenylethanol (2-PE) and 2-phenylethyl acetate (2-PEAc) production by expressing relevant genes in the 2-PE metabolic pathway using the high-temperature preferential promoter SSE1. The enhanced water retention capacity supports the metabolic activities of the encapsulated yeast cells, ensuring their survival and functionality over an extended period. Fragrance-releasing living material (FLM) is designed to controllably emit fragrance 2-PE by adjusting the microbial concentration within the hydrogel matrix. The FLM exhibits versatile adhesion capabilities, effectively binding to a spectrum of surfaces such as wood, textiles, and glass as well as to natural substrates like leaves. This adaptability enhances the material's applicability across various settings. Furthermore, FLM can be crafted into various forms, including microbeads, fibers, and films. This research opens up new horizons for controlled fragrance release of living materials.

Abstract:It is extremely difficult for traditional coatings for antifouling constructed around a single antifouling strategy to adapting to the demands of complex marine environment. Herein, a poly -ionic liquid -based germicidal polyacrylate-3 coating (AFC -3) was prepared via free radical photo -copolymerization using isooctyl acrylate (2EHA), butyl acrylate (BA) and ionic liquid monomer (IL-PF 6 ) as monomers. Besides the contact bacteriostasis mechanisms, the introduction of IL-PF 6 achieved the switch between self -renewal and hydrophilic surface by the exchange of PF 6 - and Cl - in artificial seawater. Regarding E . coli and S . aureus , the AFC -3 coating showed antibacterial efficiency of 100 % and 99.96 %, respectively. Moreover, with the continuous ionic exchange between PF 6 - and Cl - , the angle towards the water contact (WAC) of the coating became 11.356 degrees C, contributing to the enhancement of anti -protein property on the surface of the coating. The AFC -3 coating thus exhibited significantly effective antifouling performances, and is a highly promising coating for a broader range of marine antifouling and biomedical materials. Besides, the transmittance of the coating was above 92 % between 400 and 800 cm -1 , conferring it great potentials for applications on the surface of optical devices like underwater cameras.

Abstract:This work proposed a novel molecular-level superhydrophobic coating. The superhydrophobicity was achieved by using polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) as the low-energy substance and nanoparticles of metal organic framework (MOF) as the roughness-improving components. The nanoparticles were synthesized by using 2-aminoterephthalic acid as the ligand to obtain molecular level amination, and PDMS was molecular-level aminopropyl terminated prior to the coating preparation. These made the coating molecular-level superhydrophobic. Epoxy resin and triclosan were further used to improve the mechanical strength and to ensure the bactericidal property, respectively. These four components (NH2 -PDMS, NH2-MOF, epoxy resin, triclosan) were cured in onestep at mom temperature by using a "jointly shared" hexamethylene isocyanate (HDI) as the crosslinker via chemical interaction between isocyanate group in HDI and amino groups in NH2-PDMS and in NH2-MOF and hydroxyl groups in epoxy resin and in triclosan. The chemical immobilization of triclosan in the coatings avoids its leaching and is friendly to the environment. The as-prepared superhydrophobic coatings are mom temperature curable, fluorine-free and have excellent wear-resistant, antibacterial and antifouling performance. The coating can be prepared by simply brushing and spraying, and has a potential for large-scale industrial application.

Abstract:Hospital-acquired infections are predominately associated with bacteria colonization on the surfaces of medical devices and implants. To reduce such infection, we report a simple method for antibacterial coating of various surfaces (e.g., glasses and fabrics) at hospital site. As found, adhesive hydrogels made of polydextran aldehyde (PDA) and polyethylenimine (PEI) killed the three types of bacteria (E. coli, S. aureus, and P. aeruginosa) with minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) at 9.8, 3.5, and 4.5 mg/mL. Then the antibacterial surfaces of glasses and fabrics were obtained via coating them by electrospinning of PDA/PEI nanofibers for 30 min. After they were coated, the surfaces could completely suppress the growth of E. coli, S. aureus, and P. aeruginosa for up to 108 h of incubation, but they still maintained their cytocompatibility to fibroblasts. This surface coating is highly effective and long-acting, showing potential applicability in suppressing bacterial infections.

Abstract:In our continuing search for new polymer composites with antimicrobial activity, we observed that even unmodified epoxy resins exhibit significant activity. Considering their widespread use as starting materials for the realization of multifunctional nanocomposites with excellent chemical and mechanical properties, it was deemed relevant to uncover these unexpected properties that can lead to novel applications. In fact, in places where the contact with human activities makes working surfaces susceptible to microbial contamination, thus jeopardizing the sterility of the environment, their biological activity opens the way to their successful application in minimizing healthcare-associated infections. To this end, three commercial and widely used epoxy resins (DGEBA/Elan-TechW 152LR, 1; EPIKOTETM Resin MGS®/EPIKURETM RIM H 235, 2 and MC152/EW101, 3) have been investigated to determine their antibacterial and antiviral activity. After 24 h, according to ISO 22196:2011, resins 1 and 2 showed a high antibacterial efficacy (R value > 6.0 log reduction) against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Resin 2, prepared according to the ratio epoxy/hardener indicated by the supplier (sample 2a) and with 10% w/w hardener excess (sample 2b), exhibited an intriguing virucidal activity against Herpes Simplex Virus type-1 and Human Coronavirus type V-OC43 as a surrogate of SARS-CoV-2.

Abstract:In this article a new asymmetrical ester, methyl-furfuryl fumarate, containing α,β-unsaturated carbonyl group structure were prepared, and its inhibition on yeasts and mold were studied. The results showed that it could remarkably inhibit the growth of yeasts and mold. And it could effectively postpone the growth time of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae and Aspergillus Niger and reduce their final growth quantity. Furthermore its effect was much better than sodium benzoate. These suggested it was a new preservative worth of developing and applying largely.
Antifouling and antimicrobial 3D printed small household appliances with incorporation of zwitterions and quaternary ammonium compounds

Abstract:Nowadays, small household appliances had revolutionized the way we live and work with unparalleled innovation and performance, but the bacterial colonization of the appliance surfaces was a widespread phenomenon with consequences on human health and well-being. In this work, a spectrum of composite resins with addition of different ratios of sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) and 12-methacryloyloxydodecylpyridinium bromide (MDPB) were prepared by photocuring 3D printing technology for improving their antifouling and antimicrobial properties. A remarkable improvement in mechanical property was observed as a result of the electrostatic attraction between SBMA, MDPB and polyurethane. The composite resins exhibited a relatively hydrophilic surface because of the high hydration capacity of zwitterionic SBMA, which enabled effective suppression of protein adsorption and bacterial adhesion, resulting in excellent antifouling property. Meanwhile, the antimicrobial property of the composite resins against both S. aureus (Gram-positive bacteria) and E. coli (Gram-negative bacteria) was significantly improved in the presence of MDPB, and the resins with 20% MDPB showed the best antimicrobial property, with a reduction rate of 98.3% and 97.1% against S. aureus and E. coli , respectively. Not only that, all composite resins persevered low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility. More importantly, a series of children's nebulizers with enhanced protein adsorption resistance, reduced bacterial fouling and sustained biocompatibility were fabricated by photocuring 3D printing technology using the composite resins, confirming the success of antifouling and antimicrobial composite resin strategy in small household appliances.

Abstract:Dental resin composites have been widely used in a variety of direct and indirect dental restorations due to their aesthetic properties compared to amalgams and similar metals. Despite the fact that dental resin composites can contribute similar mechanical properties, they are more likely to have microbial accumulations leading to secondary caries. Therefore, the effective and long-lasting antimicrobial properties of dental resin composites are of great significance to their clinical applications. The approaches of ascribing antimicrobial properties to the resin composites may be divided into two types: The filler-type and the resin-type. In this review, the resin-type approaches were highlighted. Focusing on the antimicrobial polymers used in dental resin composites, their chemical structures, mechanical properties, antimicrobial effectiveness, releasing profile, and biocompatibility were included, and challenges, as well as future perspectives, were also discussed.

Abstract:Methacrylate-ended polypeptides/polypeptoids were successfully synthesized via ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of N-carboxyanhydrides (NCA). These oligomers were further initiated under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation by a polydopamine (pDA) layer which is attachable to the surface of virtually all materials to generate a polymer brush coating. This brush-like polymer coating comprising cationic antimicrobial polypeptides (MePpep) and antifouling polysarcosine (MePsar) exhibited effective antimicrobial activity against four pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans), as well as antifouling activity in the resistance to protein and platelet adhesion, and thus prevented biofilm formation for up to 7 days. An in vitro cytotoxicity study showed that this coating is biocompatible with mouse fibroblast (L929) cells. More importantly, this coating exhibited significant anti-infectivity in vivo. This dual-functional polymer brush coating can be immobilized on the surface of multiple categories of materials through the mussel-inspired pDA coating, and thus should be widely applicable for combating infection in many classes of bio-medical materials.

Abstract:A novel photopolymerizable (meth)acrylate oligomer syrup modified with ferulic acid (FA) was verified as an antimicrobial coating binder against a biofilm of Staphylococcus epidermidis. A solution-free UV-LED-initiated photopolymerization process of aliphatic (meth)acrylates and styrene was performed to prepare the oligomer syrup. The influence of ferulic acid on the UV crosslinking process of the varnish coatings (kinetic studies using photo-DSC) as well as their chemical structure (FTIR) and mechanical (adhesion, hardness), optical (gloss, DOI parameter), and antibacterial properties against S. epidermidis were investigated. The photo-DSC results revealed that FA has a positive effect on reducing the early occurrence of slowing processes and has a favorable effect on the monomer conversion increment. It turned out, unexpectedly, that the more FA in the coating, the greater its adhesion to a glass substrate and hardness. The coating containing 0.9 wt. part of FA exhibited excellent antimicrobial properties against S. epidermidis, i.e., the bacterial number after 24 h was only 1.98 log CFU/mL. All the coatings showed relatively high hardness, gloss (>80 G.U.), and DOI parameter values (30–50 a.u.).

Abstract:Traditional self-polishing antifouling coatings kill surface organisms by releasing toxic substances, which are damaging to the ecosystem. As a natural antimicrobial substance, eugenol is environmentally friendly and has been proven by different research teams to be effective in enhancing the anti-fouling effect of coatings in the real sea. While in these previous research works, the eugenol was released directly into the seawater thus cannot further serve as surface antifouling effect, leading to a limited antifouling effect of the coating. In this work, the quaternary ammonium component was introduced into the butyl ester-based resin - poly (eugenol methacrylate - acryloyloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride - hexafluorobutyl methacrylate - methyl methacrylate - butyl methacrylate - ethylene glycol methyl ether acrylate) (EMQFP) coating for the first time by simple one-step free radical polymerization method. On the one hand, the eugenol produced by hydrolysis is anchored to the quaternary ammonium on the coating surface for a period of time due to the cationic-π interaction, instead of being released into seawater immediately after hydrolysis, thus increasing the utilization rate of eugenol; on the other hand, the negatively charged carboxylate groups generated after hydrolysis in the coating are mutually attracted to quaternary ammonium through electrostatic effect, so the resin chain segment conformation on the coating surface adjusted to produce zwitterionic-like structure, and the hydration of zwitterionic inhibits primary fouling adhesion.

Abstract:Marine biofouling is a sticky problem.As the enhancement of environmental awareness,the development of environmentally friendly marine antifouling systems has become the most important task in this field.Nowadays,non-toxic silicone/fluorine-based marine antifouling coatings have attracted considerable attention.In this paper,the recent progress in the silicon/fluorine-based low surface energy antifouling coatings have been reviewed,and particularly,the fouling release coatings based on biomimetic technology have been described.The effects of surface properties such as physical/chemical properties and structure characteristics on the settled organisms are investigated.In addition,the silicone-based antifouling coatings modified by amphiphilic additives are introduced.Finally,the future trend of the antifouling coatings is given.

Abstract:A series of antibacterial styrene-acrylic emulsions (SA-Mn, n = 5, 10, 15, 20) with different contents of 5-(methacryloxy-2-ethoxyaminocarbonyl)methyl-thiazole (MEMT) were successfully synthesized, and SA-M20 was used to prepare a water-based antibacterial coating (PSA-M20). The structures of the films (SA-Mn-F) obtained from SA-Mn were analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry using the attenuated total reflectance model (FTIR-ATR). The effects of the MEMT content on the properties of the emulsions and related films were investigated in the aspects of particle size, thermal stability, pencil hardness, adhesive force grade, water resistance, and surface morphology. The results showed that all the emulsions or related films had acceptable properties. The antibacterial and antibacterial durability tests showed that films obtained from emulsions SA-M15, SA-M20, and the coating PSA-M20 had strong and durable antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus .

Preparation of new modified antimicrobial alkyd resin based on benzo[b]thiophene derivative as source of polyol for surface coating applications

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to prepare new modified alkyd resins and use it as an antimicrobial binder for surface coating applications. Design/methodology/approach Various modified alkyd resins were prepared by partial replacement of 3,6-dichloro benzo[b]thiophene-2-carbonyl bis-(2-hydroxy ethyl)-amide as a source of polyol with glycerol and confirmed by acid value, FT-IR, 1H-NMR. The modified alkyd resins were covering a wide range of oil lengths and hydroxyl content (0%, 10%, 20% and 30% excess-OH). The antimicrobial activity of the prepared alkyds was also investigated. The coatings of 60 ± 5 μm thickness were applied to the surface of glass panels and mild steel strips by means of a brush. Physico-mechanical tests, chemical resistance and antimicrobial activities were investigated. Findings The obtained results illustrate that the introduction of benzo[b]thiophene derivative as a modifier polyol within the resin structure improved the film performance and enhanced the physico-mechanical characteristics, chemical resistance and the antimicrobial activities. Practical implications The modified alkyd resins can be employed as antimicrobial binders in paint compositions for a variety of surfaces, particularly those that are susceptible to a high number of bacteria. Originality/value Modified alkyd resins based on antimicrobial heterocyclic compounds have the potential to be promising in the manufacturing of antimicrobial coatings and development of paints, allowing them to function to prevent the spread of microbial infection, which is exactly what the world requires at this time. Also, they can be applied in different substrates for industrial applications.

Abstract:The recovery and utilization of thermosetting resins without any pollution is always concerned in the FRP (Fiber Reinforce Plastic) industry. Based on the theory that the ester exchange reaction between alcoholic hydroxyl and ester groups will occur in existence of catalyst, a new technology was developed to recycle bisphenol-A epoxy resin cured with anhydrides. The orthogonal experiments were carried out and influence factors were analyzed in order to get a higher decomposition ratio of epoxy resin. Decomposed products were analysed with FTIR and were further applied to prepare regenerated resin by mixing with fresh epoxy resin. The degree of three-dimensional network and mechanical properties of original and regenerated resins were measured and compared. The results showed that the decomposition ratio could reach 98% while heated at 180 °C with the NaOH catalyst in ethylene glycol (EG) for 7 hours and the properties of the regenerated resin were good.
