Abstract:The effective dose conversion factors(DCF) of indoor radon progeny exposure are affected by many parameters of indoor environments.To understand the sensitivity of the effective dose conversion factors to(i) ventilation rate,(ii) aerosol particle concentration,and(iii) relative size distribution of the aerosol-attached decay products,the influence of these parameters to DCF were analyzed in this paper by using indoor radon progeny model.The DCF in typical indoor conditions were calculated.The results show that the DCF in typical indoor conditions is 28.4 nSv(Bq·h·m-3)-1,in the 19.9—33.9 nSv(Bq·h·m-3)-1 in consideration of the variation of the parameters of indoor environments.

Abstract:The technique of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to study the concentrations and distributions of indoor radon (222Rn) and thoron (220Rn) as well as their progeny in three dimensions. According to the simulation results, in a naturally ventilated room, the activity distribution of 222Rn is homogeneous except for the places near air diffuser (supply and exhaust) locations. The concentration of 220Rn exponentially decreases with the distance from the source wall which is considered independently. However, as the ventilation rate increased, the concentrations of both 222Rn and 220Rn decreased and their activity distributions become complicated due to the effect of turbulent flow. It suggests that the impact factors of monitoring conditions (sampling site, airflow characteristics, etc.) should be taken into account in obtaining representative concentrations of 222Rn/220Rn for dose assessment. Both the simulation results of activities and their distributions agreed well with the experimental results in a laboratory room. It suggests that the CFD models may be applicable for the estimation of indoor 222Rn and 220Rn as well as their progeny.

Abstract:Radon exhaled from building materials infiltrates the indoor atmosphere and is transported into the indoor space by buoyancy-driven airflow. This paper investigated the dynamic coupling of radon concentration in the building wall area and indoor space. An indoor radon migration model under natural convection caused by temperature gradient was established. The radon exhalation rate, average Nusselt number, and average Sherwood number at the building wall and indoor space interface were quantified. The mechanism of radon migration from building materials into the indoor atmosphere was elucidated. Results show that natural convection influences the flow of indoor air and the radon concentration distribution, which increases with the increase of temperature gradient.

Abstract:The present case study focuses on indoor radon dispersion in an experimental room made of unfired mud brick by employing CFD modeling, active measurement, and passive measurement in closed and open room conditions. Radon flux for walls and floor surfaces of the room was measured experimentally. A CFD model was designed to simulate spatial distribution pattern of indoor radon. The CFD simulation results are validated through a newly developed RnDuo monitor and single-entry pinhole-based twin-cup dosimeter. The mean indoor radon concentration decreases by approximately one-fourth level in an open room as compared to a closed room.

Field Measurements on Unattached Fraction of Indoor Radon Progeny and Its Dose Evaluation

Abstract:The unattached fraction of indoor radon progeny is one of the most important factors working on radon exposure evaluation.For a precise evaluation and analysis on radon exposure,detail information on radon progeny,especially its unattached fraction in real indoor environments is necessary to understand.In this paper,a new type of portable,low cost,reusable integrating monitor with etched track detector(CR-39) for field measurement on unattached fraction of radon progeny was deployed for a pilot survey on unattached fraction,and evaluation on radon exposure in different indoor environments was carried out.It was indicated by the results that the dose contribution of unattached fraction to that of total radon progeny is obvious,around 36%—62%.No big difference of dose contribution of unattached fraction was found in different indoor environments,and the biggest contribution of unattached fraction was found in coal mine.

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to efficiently reduce the release of radon from water bodies to protect the environment. Methods: Based on the sizes of the experimental setup and modular float, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to assess the impact of the area coverage rate, immersion depth, diffusion coefficient, and radon transfer velocity at the gas-liquid interface on radon migration and exhalation of radon-containing water. Based on the numerical simulation results, an estimation model for the radon retardation rate was constructed. The effectiveness of the CFD simulation was evaluated by comparing the experimental and simulated variation values of the radon retardation rate with the coverage area rates. Results: The effect of radon transfer velocity on radon retardation in water bodies was minor and insignificant according to the appropriate value; therefore, an estimation model of the radon retardation rate of the coverage of a radon-containing water body was constructed using the synergistic impacts of three factors: area coverage rate, immersion depth, and diffusion coefficient. The deviation between the experimental and simulated results was < 4.3%. Conclusion: Based on the numerical simulation conditions, an estimation model of the radon retardation rate of covering floats in water bodies under the synergistic effect of multiple factors was obtained, which provides a reference for designing covering floats for radon retardation in radon-containing water.

Abstract:As radon is one of the most important natural radiation sources, its radiation hazard has always been a concern alpha and beta particles emitted by short-lived radioactive radon progeny nuclides could result in a high local dose and induce radiation damage to the respiratory tract. A detailed respiratory tract model needs to be built and dose distribution in the respiratory tract should be studied to reflect the characteristics of energy deposition caused by radon and its progeny. Therefore, in the present work, a dosimetric study was conducted on the respiratory tract and non-uniform dose distribution in the bronchial region was studied. First, a detailed voxel respiratory tract model was established based on the anatomic bronchial parameters of an adult Chinese male. The dimensional parameters of the tracheo-bronchial tree of an adult male adopted in ICRP Publication 66 (ICRP 1994 Human Respiratory Tract Model for Radiological Protection ICRP Publication 66 (Oxford: Pergamon)), featured by consecutive 16 generations of bronchi structures to express the irregular structure of the respiratory tract and the radiosensitive tissues in the bronchial region, were also built for dosimetric study. Then the deposition and clearance models recommended by ICRP were used to analyse the regional deposition and transfer in the respiratory tract, and a fluid dynamic simulation was used to obtain 3D distribution of radon progeny aerosol particles in the bronchial region. The result showed that the highest deposition fraction density occurs at the first and second generations of bronchi. Furthermore, the detailed voxel respiratory tract model along with the Monte Carlo method were used to obtain dose distribution in the BB region. It was found that the dose distribution in the respiratory tract is very non-uniform and the maximum voxel dose is about 30 times higher than the average voxel dose. The dose conversion factor (DCF) for lung in the home environment derived with the dosimetry method in the present work is 9.86 mSv.WLM-1. Sensitivity analysis was performed for the parameters involved in the DCF calculation and it was found that the unattached fraction and breathing rate influence the DCF the most.
Investigation of the indoor 222Rn and 220Rn levels in the residential environment and estimation of the annual effective radiation dose for ordinary residents

Abstract:To evaluate the health risk of radon and its progeny, a large amount of accurate monitoring data is needed according to the theory and practice of health risk assessment. However, the indoor radon levels in different regions in China and worldwide reveal temporal and spatial variations. In addition, the residents living in different areas follow distinct living modes. Therefore, it is recommended and accepted by many researchers to detect the radon level in local areas and subsequently conduct health risk assessments based on local detection data. In this study, 21 bedrooms of households in Weifang city were selected, and the indoor 222 Rn and 220 Rn levels were detected with RAD7 radon detector in winter, while the annual effective radiation dose was calculated for ordinary residents in Weifang city. Our investigation showed that the 24- and 12-hour average levels of 222 Rn were 35.7±15.2 Bq/m 3 and 36.2±15.8 Bq/m 3 , respectively. The 24- and 12-hour average levels of 220 Rn were 30.4±12.3 Bq/m 3 and 22.4±11.6 Bq/m 3 , respectively. There were significant differences in the average levels of 222 Rn and 220 Rn between floors. The estimated annual effective radiation dose received by ordinary residents in Weifang city was 1.7193 mSv, of which 0.9479 mSv originated from 222 Rn and its progeny and 0.7714 mSv originated from 220 Rn and its progeny, accounting for 55.1% and 44.9%, respectively, of the total dose. Our findings suggest that 220 Rn should not be ignored by local residents in Weifang city, and more attention should be paid to 220 Rn in future research.

Abstract:The knowledge of the soil radon levels is important for the planning and construction of new buildings in order to estimate the radon risk and to classify the ground for construction purposes. A simple device was developed to simulate the vertical migration of radon in soil. The device simulates the vertical migration of radon in two different cases. The first case: simulates radon vertical migration in soil in a natural environment. The top of the device is open, while the around and bottom are sealed. The second case: simulates the vertical migration of radon in soil under the surface of a concrete floor. The device is sealed all around, including the top and bottom. A total of two sets of experiments were conducted in this study, each set of experiments simulated the migration of radon under two different cases. According to the research results, the potential radon concentration under the concrete floor is much higher than the natural potential radon concentration. Therefore, this factor must be fully considered when selecting the building materials and designing radon protection materials.

Abstract:To investigate the behaviours and influence factors of radon progeny in rural dwellings in China, site measurements of radon equilibrium factor, unattached fraction and some important indoor environmental factors, such as aerosol concentration, aerosol size distribution and ventilation rate, were carried out in three typical types of dwellings, and a theoretical study was also performed synchronously. Good consistency between the results of site measurements and the theoretical calculation on equilibrium factor F and unattached fraction f(p) was achieved. Lower equilibrium factor and higher unattached fraction in mud or cave houses were found compared to those in brick houses, and it was suggested by the theoretical study that the smaller aerosol size distribution in mud or cave houses might be the main reason for what was observed. The dose conversion factor in the mud houses and the cave houses may be higher than that in brick houses.

Abstract:Determining the transmission rate of radon gas in overburden strata is crucial for conducting a comprehensive study of radon gas's longitudinal and long-distance migration mechanisms. This study investigates the mineral components of rocks in the underground strata of the mining area using the X-ray diffraction method. Additionally, it examines the pore structure parameters of the rocks at different depths using the low-temperature nitrogen adsorption method. This research introduces an approach to inversion calculate the radon gas transmission rate through the activity ratio of radon's characteristic daughters based on the decay law and activity balance of 210Po and 210Pb daughters. In addition, it determines the transmission rates of radon gas in overlying strata at various depths through this method. The relationship between the rock's mineral composition and pore structure is investigated, and the effects of pore structure and mineral composition on the radon gas transmission rate are analyzed. The findings indicated that the pore structure exerts a dual impact on radon gas transport: macropores serve as channels for upward radon gas transport, while micropores offer most of the adsorption area. In contrast, the radon gas transmission rate is indirectly influenced by the mineral composition content associated with the medium's adsorption capacity and pore structure. In the studied lithologies, an increase in quartz content promotes radon gas transmission, while an increase in clay mineral content impedes it. Finally, the mechanisms of radon gas transport, daughter adsorption, and the impacts of rock pore structure and mineral composition on the radon transmission rate are discussed.

Abstract:The radon from uranium tailings spreads fast and has a wide range of pollution, which poses a potential radiation hazard to the environment and the public in downwind region. In this paper, the open and naked uranium tailings are selected as research object. By setting up multiple Gaussian plume models with single point source, the diffusion of radon in the uranium tailings is simulated with different atmospheric stability, average wind speed, height and downwind distance. The results show that the maximum radon concentration increases while the related downwind distance decreases as the atmospheric becoming stable. The higher wind speed does not affect the downwind distance where the maximum radon concentration occurs, but it decreases the maximum radon concentration. The concentration of radon in residential area decreases but the decreasing rate speeds up with height going up. The distribution of radon in vertical and horizontal direction tends to be homogeneous while the near-surface area concentration decreases rapidly as farther downwind distance.

Abstract:Radon exhaled from rocks, building materials, and soil can be harmful to human health, so it is necessary to measure radon and its exhalation rate. In this paper, a novel method is proposed to simulate radon exhalation from different medium surface by using a solid Rn-222 source, and the radon exhalation rate can be adjusted by replacing radon accumulation chambers with different bottom areas. Firstly, an experiment was done to determine the activity of the Rn-222 source, and then the theoretical radon exhalation rate can be quickly calculated from the relationship between the radon source activity and the bottom area of the radon accumulation chamber. Three sets of comparative experiments were conducted using two radon accumulation chambers with different volumes, respectively. Comparing the average values obtained from the experiments with the calculated theoretical values, it can be obtained that the differences corresponding to the two radon accumulation chambers between the theoretical radon exhalation rates and the experimentally average values are all within 6%. Without replacing the radon source, the radon exhalation rate is inversely varies with the bottom area of the chamber. Therefore, the correctness of adjusting the radon exhalation rate by replacing radon accumulation chambers with different bottom areas to simulate radon exhalation from different media surfaces is verified. This method can be used to calibrate the radon exhalation measuring instruments.

Abstract:The use of building materials containing naturally occurring radionuclides,such as K-40, U-238 and Th-232 and their progeny, could lead to external exposures of the residents of such buildings. In this paper, a set of models are set up to calculate the specific effective dose rates(the effective dose rate per Bq/kg of K-40, U-238 series, and Th-232 series) imposed to residents by building materials with MCNPX code. Effect of chemical composition, position concerned in the room and thickness as well as density of material is analyzed. In order to facilitate more precise assessment of indoor external dose due to gamma emitting radionuclides in building materials, three regressive expressions are proposed and validated by measured data to calculate specific effective rate for K-40, U-238 series and Th-232 series, respectively.

Abstract:The radionuclides released from NPPs (Nuclear Power Plants) as a result of accidents will significantly affect human health by causing cancer, genetic diseases, or acute radiation sickness. To investigate and evaluate the influence of the airborne hazardous materials on human bodies in an indoor environment in urban areas near NPPs, it is necessary to calculate the inhalation dose. In this study, a method for the assessment of the inhalation dose of indoor radionuclides was proposed. This method consists of the combination of the basic equation of natural ventilation and the empirical equation for calculation of the inhalation dose. The method was applied in a modeled densely urban domain, and CFD simulations were conducted to obtain the wind pressure distribution on the building surfaces. Moreover, the impacts of certain important parameters, including the ventilation coefficient, the age group of humans, the wind velocity, the urban street width, and the building height, were discussed in this paper. The results show that all of these parameters affect the indoor inhalation dose. In most cases, the indoor dose obtained at the same floor was higher with a higher ventilation coefficient, breathing rate, wind velocity, and street width or a lower building height. Furthermore, people living in the middle floors will generally be exposed to a lower inhalation dose than those in other floors especially the top floor.

Abstract:The alpha cup method was employed to delineate spontaneous combustion areas in three coal mines. Following this, cores were drilled to measure radon concentration at various depths using the RAD7 radon detector. Subsequently, the results were then combined with the equation of radon concentration distribution with depth in a semi-infinite medium, demonstrating the equation's suitability for shallow coal seams. Thereafter, numerical models of radon migration were constructed. The study found that the upward migration of radon is weakened and adsorbed by rock formations, and faults, altering the migration path of radon.

Abstract:The activity concentrations of 218 Po, 214 Pb and 214 Bi [i.e. C( 218 Po), C( 214 Pb), and C( 214 Bi)] and the calculated concentration ratios [i.e. 1:C( 214 Pb)/C( 218 Po):C( 214 Bi)/C( 218 Po)] are necessary for assessing radon and its progenies exposure. In this study, a measurement method of radon progenies concentrations with both high sensitivity and low uncertainty, was developed based on the Kerr method. The field measurement results of radon progeny concentrations and calculated concentration ratios in both typical indoor and outdoor environments in Beijing, China, were reported. The effects of air exchange rate on concentration ratios of radon progenies in indoor environments were discussed.

Abstract:Accurate measurements of the radon exhalation rate help identify and evaluate radon risk regions in the environment. Among these measurement methods, the closed-loop method is frequently used. However, traditional experiments are insufficient or cannot analyze the radon migration and exhalation patterns at the gas–solid interface in the accumulation chamber. The CFD-based technique was applied to predict the radon concentration distribution in a limited space, allowing radon accumulation and exhalation inside the chamber intuitively and visually. In this study, three radon exhalation rates were defined, and two structural ventilation tubes were designed for the chamber. The consistency of the simulated results with the variation in the radon exhalation rate in a previous experiment or analytical solution was verified. The effects of the vent tube structure and flow rate on the radon uniformity in the chamber; permeability, insertion depth, and flow rate on the radon exhalation rate and the effective diffusion coefficient on back-diffusion were investigated. Based on the results, increasing the insertion depth from 1 to 5 cm decreased the effective decay constant by 19.55%, whereas the curve-fitted radon exhalation rate decreased (lower than the initial value) as the deviation from the initial value increased by approximately 7%. Increasing the effective diffusion coefficient from 2.77 × 10 −7 to 7.77 × 10 −6 m 2 s −1 made the deviation expand from 2.14 to 15.96%. The conclusion is that an increased insertion depth helps reduce leakage in the chamber, subject to notable back-diffusion, and that the closed-loop method is reasonably used for porous media with a low effective diffusion coefficient in view of the back-diffusion effect. The CFD-based simulation is expected to provide guidance for the optimization of the radon exhalation rate measurement method and, thus, the accurate measurement of the radon exhalation rate.

Abstract:The behavior of indoor radon decay products is influenced by ventilation rate,wall deposition,attachment to the aerosol and so on.All this progresses work on the unattached fraction of radon progeny and the equilibrium factor F.Our research focuses on the model of indoor radon decay products behaviors.Through a theoretical model,the influence of ventilation rate,the size distribution of aerosol and the concentration of aerosol on the unattached fraction and also the equilibrium factor are described.The research shows that the equilibrium factor decreases with the increase in ventilation rate increase,and also shows that the unattached fraction increases quickly with the decrease in the size distribution of aerosol.
