Abstract:We propose and demonstrate an improved Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) architecture supporting bandwidth-scalable physical layer local area network (LAN) emulation. Due to the use of orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) technology for the LAN traffic transmission, there is no need to change the existing EPON architecture. Only one receiver at each optical network unit (ONU) is required to detect both LAN traffic and EPON downstream traffic, which makes the proposed system simple and cost-effective. Moreover, flexible assignment of LAN traffic bandwidth is realized by allocating different number of subcarriers or using different modulation formats. The 250 Mb/s 4-quadrature amplitude modulation (4-QAM) and 500 Mb/s 16-QAM OFDM LAN traffic are successfully emulated with the EPON traffic in our experiment. © 2011 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:Spatial field digital modulation (SFDM) is a newly proposed technique, which directly modulates information in the spatial distribution of the electromagnetic (EM) field. In this letter, we propose an orbital angular momentum (OAM) based SFDM system. Furthermore, a demodulation method called the spatial matched filtering criterion is developed. The introduction of the spatial matched filter simplifies the architecture of the receiver and makes the practical system implement more viable. An experimental testbed is then built to measure the state isolation and the corresponding bit error rate (BER) performance of the OAM-SFDM system. We realize the SFDM signal transmission at a communication distance of 1.5 m with a practical analog-demodulation OAM-SFDM system. The results of the numerical simulations and the experimental measurements both verify the validity of this demodulation method. Moreover, it has been confirmed that the predictable phase information brought about by OAM waves plays a prominent role in the demodulation process.

Abstract:HINOC (High Performance Network over Coax) is a coaxial cable access technology used in tri-networks integration. To test and measure the physical-layer performance of HINOC modem (HM), a protocol-mode approach including a specific HINOC MAC layer and test script scheduler of HB is designed to change the status and parameters of the HM during the test. Power, spectrum, modulation and demodulation quality can be test with data flow on communication link. This method can test HM's performance of transmitter and receiver without any modification to the HM, which has more advantages than the traditional non-protocol physical-layer test approach.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a novel physical layer secure (PLS) potential technique which is summarized into a category of index modulation (IM) scheme, namely the spatial field digital modulation (SFDM). In an SFDM communication system, bit streams are modulated in the spatial distribution of electromagnetic (EM) field. Orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode groups can be utilized for beamforming and thus realize an OAM based SFDM (OAM-SFDM) system. This kind of IM systems that utilize the distribution of EM field to transmit information can radiate different signals to different directions and possess inherent anti-eavesdropping capability. Since an eavesdropper lacks prior knowledge, it is difficult to construct appropriate and effective estimators for signal demodulation. However, such system is vulnerable when potential eavesdroppers adopt clustering algorithm, a type of non-realtime demodulation. We propose two PLS strategies with different computational complexity, the power hopping (PH) method and the symbol variation (SV) method, to confront single-antenna eavesdroppers and multi-antenna eavesdroppers, respectively. Both approaches are key-free, and do not require any prior channel state information (CSI) about eavesdroppers. The mentioned methods could constantly disrupt the statistical properties of eavesdroppers’ channels and even their received signals. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations have been conducted to validate the feasibility of these two schemes. Furthermore, a prototype of OAM-SFDM based PLS communication system is built in a realistic scenario. The experimental results demonstrate that both PH method and SV method can effectively resist clustering algorithm in their corresponding application scenarios.

Abstract:Stochastic nonlinear impairment is the primary factor that limits the transmission performance of high-speed orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-division multiplexing (MDM) optical fiber communication systems. This Letter presents a low-complexity adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (LANFIS) nonlinear equalizer for OAM-MDM intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM/DD) transmission with three OAM modes and 15 wavelength division multiplex (WDM) channels. The LANFIS equalizer could adjust the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the distorted pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) symbols to fit the statistical characteristics of the WDM-OAM-MDM transmission channel. Therefore, although the transmission symbols in the WDM-OAM-MDM system are subjected to a stochastic nonlinear impairment, the proposed LANFIS equalizer can effectively compensate the distorted signals. The proposed equalizer outperforms the Volterra equalizer with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 2, 1.5, and 1.3 dB for three OAM modes at a wavelength of 1550.12 nm, respectively. It also outperforms a CNN equalizer, with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 1, 0.5, and 0.3 dB, respectively. Moreover, complexity reductions of 67%, 74%, and 99.9% are achieved for the LANFIS equalizer compared with the Volterra, CNN, and ANFIS equalizers, respectively. The proposed equalizer has high performance and low complexity, making it a promising candidate for a high-speed WDM-OAM-MDM system.

Abstract:In this paper, based on HDLC protocols, we propose a novel interface scheme to deal with section overhead (SOH) in data communication channel (DCC), which is used in SDH processors development. In our experiments, we have finished the application design and test for real systems. Now this scheme and the related SDH SOH processors have been implemented in the various designs of ADM projects.

Abstract:We propose methods and an architecture to conduct measurements and optimize newly installed optical fiber line systems semi-automatically using integrated physics-aware technologies in a data center interconnection (DCI) transmission scenario. We demonstrate, for the first time, digital longitudinal monitoring (DLM) and optical line system (OLS) physical parameter calibration working together in real-time to extract physical link parameters for transmission performance optimization. Our methodology has the following advantages over traditional design: a minimized footprint at user sites, accurate estimation of the necessary optical network characteristics via complementary telemetry technologies, and the capability to conduct all operation work remotely. The last feature is crucial, as it enables remote operation to implement network design settings for immediate response to quality of transmission (QoT) degradation and reversion in the case of unforeseen problems. We successfully performed semi-automatic line system provisioning over field fiber networks facilities at Duke University, Durham, NC. The tasks of parameter retrieval, equipment setting optimization, and system setup/provisioning were completed within 1 hour. The field operation was supervised by on-duty personnel who could access the system remotely from different time zones. By comparing Q-factor estimates calculated from the extracted link parameters with measured results from 400G transceivers, we confirmed that our methodology has a reduction in the QoT prediction errors (+-0.3 dB) over existing design (+-10.6 dB).

Abstract:As infrared transmission has the advantages of wide bandwidth, immunity to radio interference, high security and license-free, it is an attractive alternative to radio for wireless local area networks (LAN). The design of an interface between the high-speed optical wireless transceiver (>20Mbps) and the optical wireless LAN is presented in this paper. We transplant the EEEE 802.11 medium access control (MAC) layer protocol to our system, define and implement a new physical (PHY) layer management module. This management module can also provide us an experimental platform to analyze the performance of the modulation schemes, such as L-PPM, PIM, DH-PIM, etc. Due to its characteristics of flexibility, simplicity and low cost, the management module is a good choice for the indoor optical wireless LAN's.

Abstract:In this part, we discuss the physical layer controller scheme of the multi-cores baseband chip, and a physical layer control scheme for TD-LTE mobile terminal baseband chip is proposed. According to the architecture of the baseband chip and the protocol of LTE, the timing base unit is designed. Relying on TBU, under the control of the main control unit l1cp0 and l1cp1, data streams are batched, and we establish the scheduling sequence for physical layer uplink and downlink, and complete timing control and task scheduling among multi-cores baseband chip.

Abstract:With the explosion of traffic demand in recent years, the integration of satellite optical networks and terrestrial networks (ISTN) creates a promising networking solution for future low-latency, high-rate, and high-capacity communications. Owing to the high cost of deploying and maintaining a satellite optical network, it is critical to carefully design and plan the network to ensure the performance of the network. Thus, a semi-physical simulation platform based on software-defined networks (SDNs) is developed to simulate a satellite optical network and evaluate the performance of the proposed label-based advanced orbiting system (AOS) frame switching method that adheres to the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems' recommended standard (CCSDS). The semi-physical simulation platform has two major innovations: (1) adapting and integrating network protocols between the CCSDS and open system interconnect (OSI) reference models, particularly at the data link layer, and (2) the foundation for an SDN-based satellite optical network. In the control plane, real-time VxWorks Simulators serve as controllers to establish and manage various network protocols and the link manager protocol (LMP). Here, network protocols include open shortest path first (OSPF) for routing managing and controlling messages, constraint shortest path first-traffic engineering (CSPF-TE), and constraint-label distribution protocol (CR-LDP) for routing data services. LMP is used to assign and reserve satellite optical link resources. The performance of the architecture and protocols is evaluated via a semi-physical simulation platform.

Abstract:Passive optical network (PON) has attracted much attention by the emergence of high-bitrate video-centric applications over the Internet in the access side. In the current commercial PON, the configuration of optical line termination equipment is needed to modify through network management system manually and periodically in the local areas. The traffic flow of different users lacks dynamic control and intelligent schedule. In this paper, we propose and implement a novel software-defined optical access network (SDOAN) architecture for remote unified control based on OpenFlow-enabled PON. Based on the proposed architecture, a service-aware flow scheduling strategy is introduced to flexibly and efficiently allocate the network bandwidth resources and detect the status of network flows in real time. The SDOAN can enhance the resource utilization and QoS guarantee of each user effectively through unified control manner, and reduce the operating expense by remote interaction and operation. We have designed and verified experimentally SDOAN on our test bed with OpenFlow-enabled OLTs. The overall feasibility and efficiency of the proposed architecture are also experimentally demonstrated and compared with interleaved polling with adaptive cycle time strategy in terms of resource occupation rate and average delay.

Abstract:Structural Health Monitoring, Ahead of Print. Ultrasonic-guided wave (UGW) is an important technology for realizing structural health monitoring (SHM), and the piezoelectric transducer (PZT) is a commonly used actuator and sensor. The PZT layer is fabricated using a flexible printed circuit (FPC), and the interface of the PZTs is connected to the host of the monitoring system via cables. The flexible PZT layer (FPL) is easy to install, highly reliable, and widely used in industrial sites. However, as the distance between the host and the FPL gradually increases, the problem of guided wave (GW) signal attenuation caused by cables cannot be ignored. In addition, the use of shielded cables has the problem of heavy quality and high cost, and the use of unshielded cables has the problem of signal interference. Therefore, this paper proposes a digital smart layer (DSL) composed of a flexible signal acquisition system and a PZT array. The DSL acquires excitation and GW signals acquisition and performs PZT diagnostics. It connects to the host via a fixed six-wire cable and uses digital signals for communication. Multiple DSLs can be interconnected to form a network and perform damage detection simultaneously, improving the monitoring area and damage detection efficiency of the system. An experimental system was constructed on an aluminum plate to verify the functionality of the DSL. The results prove that the DSL solves the problems of signal attenuation and interference susceptibility of GW signal in long-distance cable transmission and realizes the diagnosis of PZT faults such as debonding and breakage. This paper provides a highly reliable and practical means of monitoring the condition of equipment structures such as airplanes, trains, and bridges.

Abstract:With the continuous application of EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network) technology in the power communication network, communication operation and maintenance personnel urgently need to carry out equipment practical training and skill drills regularly. In response to the problems of high investment and maintenance costs, low training implementation efficiency, and difficulty in efficient practical exercises for equipment operation and fault handling in EPON training equipment, this article designs a solution for a fully digital EPON equipment simulation training system, and proposes simulation methods for software functions of EPON equipment such as OLT (Optical Line Terminal) and ONU (Optical Network Unit). It also proposes simulation methods for hardware appearance and interactive operation of the equipment, and further proposes a synchronization mechanism for software function and hardware feature simulation. The simulation training system developed based on this scheme not only comprehensively simulates the hardware interaction characteristics and communication logic characteristics of the equipment, but also has the ability to organize and implement large-scale, scenario based, and efficient skill training, fully supporting EPON equipment skill training and drills, and achieving rapid improvement of communication operation and maintenance personnel's skill level and work ability.
