Abstract:A novel scheme for improving RF performance in radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems by using fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is demonstrated. The optical double-sideband (DSB) signal is sent through a fiber Bragg grating working as an optical V-shape filter. The FBG offers simultaneous suppression of the two sidebands and the optical carrier. The closer the sidebands are to the optical carrier, the more the sidebands are suppressed. In this way the detected radio frequency (RF) signal after a photodetector increases as the RF frequency goes higher. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results show that this effect can compensate for the RF gain loss in high frequency region due to the deteriorated performance of devices such as photodetectors and Mach-Zehnder modulators at higher frequency. A uniform system frequency response with fluctuation of no more than 2 dB is obtained from 1 GHz to 16 GHz.

Abstract:The performances of radio-over-fiber (RoF) link with fixed incident optical power on photodetector (PD) are improved through carrier suppression method. Firstly, a precise analytical model is proposed to quantify the relationship between the improvement of link gain, noise figure (NF), spur-free dynamic range (SFDR) and the carrier suppression ratio x, in which, the modulation index m is fully considered for the first time to our knowledge. Then the optimum optical carrier-to-sideband ratio (CSR) for RoF link performances in both double-sideband and single-sideband modulation is obtained from the optimum x for the link performances. Finally the experiments with the carrier subtraction method realized by Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) are carried out and the experimental results show good agreement with the simulation ones.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a bidirectional radio-over-fiber (RoF) system based on a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA). In this system, phase-modulated 5.25-GHz radio frequency (RF) carrying 850 Mb/s is used for the downstream signal. Optical envelope detection of 10-GHz RF carrying 850 Mb/s is achieved in an RSOA. Both signals share a single fiber link and the same light source by exploiting optical carrier remodulaiton. Moreover, there is no need to employ RF down-conversion technology for RoF uplink. This makes the proposed system simpler and more cost-effective. The experimental results indicate that after simultaneous transmission of downstream and upstream signals over 25-km fiber, the receiver sensitivities are -22 and -14.5 dBm, respectively.

Abstract:A simple and low-cost technique is developed to enhance the transmission performance in fiber wireless links. Using a narrowband-fiber Bragg grating (FBG), single-sideband modulation is realized by filtering out one sideband, which at the same time increases the modulation depth by suppressing the optical-carrier power. Abstract:A uniform frequency response is highly appreciated in broadband wireless radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems. However, in conventional double sideband (DSB) modulation schemes, the RF gain tends to drop periodically due to the fiber chromatic dispersion effects, and the system's frequency response will deteriorate at high frequencies owing to the limited device bandwidth. In this paper, a novel scheme is described to overcome these problems by utilizing a fiber Bragg grating (FBG), which acts as a tilted filter to offer different suppression for optical carrier and the two sidebands. As the RF frequency increases, one sideband of the optically carried RF signal is more and more suppressed while the other one is just the contrary. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the total RF power received at high frequency might even be greater than that at low frequency in this scheme. Therefore, it can compensate the RF gain drop at high frequency. Moreover, the dispersion effect is also mitigated by suppressing one sideband of the DSB signal. Thus, the system's frequency response is greatly improved and the delivery distance can be extended. The proposed scheme is highly tunable by tuning the central wavelength of the FBG.

Abstract:A robust 4-channel WDM optical phase modulated 60GHz wireless fiber system is proposed and simulated. In this system, a Fabry-Perot (FP) frequency interleaver is designated to suppress optical carriers for 60GHz signal generation. The simulation results show that this phase modulated WDM system is not susceptible to crosstalk.

Abstract:A novel digital signal processing-based coherent receiver for phase-modulated radio-over-fiber (RoF) optical links is presented and demonstrated experimentally, Error-free demodulation of 50-Mbaud binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) and quadrature phase-shift keying data signal modulated on a 5-GHz radio-frequency (RF) carrier is experimentally demonstrated using the proposed digital coherent receiver. Additionally, a wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) phase-modulated RoF optical link is experimentally demonstrated. A 3 x 50 Mb/s WDM transmission of a BPSK modulated 5-GHz RF carrier is achieved over 25 km for the WPM channel spacing of 12.5 and 25 GHz, respectively.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally investigate a scheme for transmitting a phase-modulated (PM) radio-over-fiber (RoF) signal along an existing fiber infrastructure without degradation of the existing baseband signal. Optical phase encoding of both signals, namely a baseband 21.4-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero differential quaternary phase-shift keyed signal and a 5.25-GHz RoF carrying 1.25 Gb/s, enables the use of identical optical receiver structures. The experimental results show that both receivers achieve error-free operation after 80-km standard single-mode fiber transmission. The proposed scheme has potential applications for converged wireless and wireline optical access networks.

Abstract:A novel method is demonstrated to tunably compensate dispersion effect in phase modulated radio over fiber (RoF) links using an optical carrier Brillouin processing technique, which is based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) to control the phase shift of optical carrier in the modulated lightwave signal. Since this phase shift can be dynamically tuned, frequency response can be tunably improved. Both simulation and experimental results show that a uniform frequency response ranging from 1–12 GHz with a fluctuation of less than ±1 dB can be obtained by an optimal phase shift on the optical carrier.

Abstract:A simple and low-cost method for simultaneously realizing phase-to-intensity modulation conversion and efficiency improvement of fiber-optic links is proposed and demonstrated by utilizing a fiber Bragg grating (FBG). Optical phase modulation (PM) is converted to intensity modulation (IM) by reflecting the phase-modulated light at the slope of the FBG reflection spectrum. As the optical carrier is suppressed by the FBG, the modulation depth can be enhanced at the same time. Experimental results show that the effective optical PM-IM conversion is realized and an additional 5.5 dB electrical signal gain can be obtained with appropriate suppression of the optical carrier.

Abstract:The key advantage of using phase modulation ( PM) instead of intensity modulation (IM) in radio-over-fiber (RoF) link is that no bias circuitry is needed. However, proper demodulation is important for the PM link's performance. In this paper, PM with interferometric detection is low biased to get better performance. The theory of this scheme is fully investigated, including the expressions for link gain (G), noise figure (NF) and spur-free dynamic range (SFDR). Both the theory calculation and simulation results verify that the performance improvement of PM RoF link can be realized by tuning the laser wavelength without complicating the system configuration.

Abstract:Two fiber Bragg grating based techniques are proposed to reduce the fiber dispersion effect on the RF power penalty in ROF system. One is to realize the vestige sideband modulation by the narrow-band fiber Bragg grating, and the other is to use the chirped fiber grating to compensate the fiber dispersion. The transmission performance of the ROF system under both these techniques and the traditional double sideband modulation are experimentally measured and compared. The results show that the dispersion effect is effectively reduced by these two techniques and hence the transmission performances are greatly improved.

Abstract:A novel method of simultaneous realization of optical carrier-suppression and single-sideband modulation using fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter is presented. In order to enhance transmission performance of radio over fiber links, we use a fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter to filter out one sideband as well as suppress the optical carrier power. The results demonstrate 20.5dB and 14.2dB improvement in the signal noise ratios when 18GHz and 10GHz microwave signals carrying 5Mbit/s quadrature-phase-shift-keyed (QPSK) format data is transmitted over 35 km single mode fiber, respectively.

Abstract:A carrier phase-shifted (CPS) double sideband (DSB) modulation technique in radio-over-fiber (RoF) system is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. By tuning the biases in a single-drive dual parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (SD-DPMZM), the optical carrier in the DSB spectrum acquires additional phase shift. The transmittance response of a dispersive RoF link is thus being controlled and shifted in the frequency domain. Experiments successfully turned the maximum transmission frequency to 10 GHz and 15 GHz for both 25 and 39 km fiber links. Abstract:In order to overcome the influence of dispersion in long-range fiber-optic transmission systems,we study a simplex Radio-Over-Fiber(ROF) system based on optical carrier suppression and propose an improved duplex ROF system transmission scheme,in which the down-link signals are coupled to the optical carrier suppression band using 20 GHz RF signals at the central station and then transmitted to the base stations over a 50 km single-mode fiber,while the unmodulated sideband is reused to transmit the uplink signals.The system spectrum diagram and BER curve generated in simulation show that when transmitted by coupling with uplink signals,the energy penalty of downlink signal is decreased and both the uplink and downlink become more dispersion resistant.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate generation of optical carrier suppressed-optical differential phase-shift keying (OCS-oDPSK) modulation format in radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems using one single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). This scheme realizes up-conversion of baseband data for down-link wireless service delivery, generation of remote local oscillator (LO) signal for down-conversion of uplink radio frequency (RF) signal, and remodulation of down-converted uplink data, thus lowering the cost of base stations (BSs) in full-duplex RoF systems. The proposed scheme is expected to be simple and compact due to the use of a single MZM. Furthermore, the OCS-oDPSK generation principle is extended to obtain an OCS-optical differential quadrature phase-shift keying (OCS-oDQPSK) signal by employing a dual-parallel MZM (DPMZM), which is useful to deliver multiple wireless services on the same RF carrier.

Abstract:A chirped fiber grating (CFG) written by the moving fiber/phase mask scanning beam technique with a uniform mask is used to demonstrate the dispersion compensation in the externally modulated microwave/millimeter-wave over fiber system It is found that the use of the CFG is an efficient way to compensate for the severe RF power degradation induced by the fiber chromatic dispersion, which results in a significant improvement in the transmission performance. The signal to noise ratio is improved from 4.8 dB to 24.4 dB when 10.58 GHz RF signal carrying 5 Mbit/s QPSK format data is transmitted over 35 km single mode fiber.

Abstract:A duplex radio-over-fiber (RoF) link with a novel scheme to generate 60-GHz millimeter (mm)-wave using 20 GHz double sideband (DSB) optical mm-wave with signal carried only by its optical carrier is investigated. In the RoF downlink, the modulation frequency to generate the DSB optical mm-wave is reduced greatly. The theoretical analysis and numerical simulation show that this scheme cannot only eliminate the code form distortion caused by the time shifting of the sidebands, but also reduce the influence of the fading effect as the DSB optical mm-wave signal is transmitted along the fiber. Based on the scheme, the duplex RoF link with the frequency up- (down-) conversion of the down- (up-) link mm-wave signal is built and the uplink transmission performance is analyzed theoretically.

Abstract:We proposed a new scheme to realize D-band signal generation without optical filter based on Carrier Suppressed Frequency Eightfold (CSFE) in a radio over fiber (RoF) system. The carrier suppressed frequency eightfold is used to generate two optical tones with channel spacing of 8xRF frequency at D-band, and the SSB modulation is realized by using one intensity modulator. In our scheme, no any optical filter is needed, which greatly reduces the system complexity. With the proposed scheme, we successfully demonstrated the 150 GHz 10GBaud QPSK signal and 4GBaud 16QAM signal delivery over 10-km SMF and 1 m wireless.
