Abstract:We study a skew product transformation associated to an irrational rotation of the circle [0,1]/~. This skew product keeps track of the number of times an orbit of the rotation lands in the two complementary intervals of {0,1/2} in the circle. We show that under certain conditions on the continued fraction expansion of the irrational number defining the rotation, the skew product transformation has certain dense orbits. This is in spite of the presence of numerous non-dense orbits. We use this to construct laminations on infinite type surfaces with exotic properties. In particular, we show that for every infinite type surface with an isolated planar end, there is an infinite clique of 2-filling rays based at that end. These 2-filling rays are relevant to Bavard--Walker's loop graphs.

Abstract:We introduce the concept of Roe C*-algebra for a locally compact groupoid whose unit space is in general not compact, and that is equipped with an appropriate coarse structure and Haar system. Using Connes' tangent groupoid method, we introduce an analytic index for an elliptic differential operator on a Lie groupoid equipped with additional metric structure, which takes values in the K-theory of the Roe C*-algebra. We apply our theory to derive a Lichnerowicz type vanishing result for foliations on open manifolds.

Almost elementary groupoid models for $C^*$-algebras

Abstract:The notion of almost elementariness for a locally compact Hausdorff étale groupoid $\mathcal{G}$ with a compact unit space was introduced by the authors as a sufficient condition ensuring the reduced groupoid $C^*$-algebra $C^*_r(\mathcal{G})$ is (tracially) $\mathcal{Z}$-stable and thus classifiable under additional natural assumption. In this paper, we explore the converse direction and show that many groupoids in the literature serving as models for classifiable $C^*$-algebras are almost elementary. In particular, for a large class $\mathcal{C}$ of Elliott invariants and a $C^*$-algebra $A$ with $\operatorname{Ell}(A)\in \mathcal{C}$, we show that $A$ is classifiable if and only if $A$ possesses a minimal, effective, amenable, second countable, almost elementary groupoid model, which leads to a groupoid-theoretic characterization of classifiability of $C^*$-algebras with certain Elliott invariants. Moreover, we build a connection between almost elementariness and pure infiniteness for groupoids and study obstructions to obtaining a transformation groupoid model for the Jiang-Su algebra $\mathcal{Z}$.

Abstract:We provide new examples of groups without rational cross-sections (also called regular normal forms), using connections with bounded generation and rational orders on groups. Specifically, our examples are extensions of infinite torsion groups, groups of Grigorchuk type, wreath products similar to $C_2\wr(C_2\wr \mathbb Z)$ and $\mathbb Z\wr F_2$, a group of permutations of $\mathbb Z$, and a finitely presented HNN extension of the first Grigorchuk group. This last group is the first example of finitely presented group with solvable word problem and without rational cross-sections. It is also not autostackable, and has no left-regular complete rewriting system.

Abstract:We provide a framework for studying concrete C*-algebras associated with algebraic actions of semigroups: Given such an action, we construct an inverse semigroup, and we introduce conditions for algebraic actions that characterize Hausdorffness, topological freeness, and minimality of the associated tight groupoid. We parameterize all closed invariant subspaces of the unit space of our groupoid, and characterize topological freeness of the associated reduction groupoids. We prove that our groupoids are purely infinite whenever they are minimal, and in the topologically free case, we prove that our concrete C*-algebra is always a (possibly exotic) groupoid C*-algebra in the sense that it sits between the full and essential C*-algebras of our groupoid. As an application, we obtain structural results for C*-algebras associated with, for instance, shifts over semigroups, actions coming from commutative algebra, and non-commutative rings.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a rational function with degree $\geq 2$ and $X$ be its Julia set, its Fatou set, or the Riemann sphere. Suppose that $X$ is not empty. We can regard $R$ as a continuous map from $X$ onto itself. Kajiwara and Watatani showed that in the case that $X$ is the Julia set, $C_0(X)$ is a maximal abelian subalgebra of $\mathcal{O}_R(X)$, where $\mathcal{O}_R(X)$ denotes the C*-algebra associated with the dynamical system $(X,R)$ introduced by them. In this paper, we develop their result and give the equivalent condition for $C_0(X)$ to be a Cartan subalgebra of $\mathcal{O}_R(X)$.

Categorical Heisenberg action I: rational Cherednik algebras

Abstract:In this paper we introduce and study a categorical action of the positive part of the Heisenberg Lie algebra on categories of modules over rational Cherednik algebras associated to symmetric groups. We show that the generating functor for this action is exact. We then produce a categorical Heisenberg action on the categories $\mathcal{O}$ and show it is the same as one constructed by Shan and Vasserot. Finally, we reduce modulo a large prime $p$. We show that the functors constituting the action of the positive half of the Heisenberg algebra send simple objects to semisimple ones, and we describe these semisimple objects.

Abstract:We consider the category of C*-algebras equipped with actions of a locally compact quantum group. We show that this category admits a monoidal structure satisfying certain natural conditions if and only if the group is quasitriangular. The monoidal structures are in bijective correspondence with unitary R-matrices. To prove this result we use only very natural properties imposed on considered monoidal structures. We assume that monoidal product is a crossed product, monoidal product of injective morphisms is injective and that monoidal product reduces to the minimal tensor product when one of the involved C*-algebras is equipped with a trivial action of the group. No a priori form of monoidal product is used.

Abstract:In this paper, we pursue three aims. The first one is to apply Amitsur's relations and radicals theory to the study of the lattices of closed two-sided ideals of C*-algebras A . We show that many new and many well-known results about C*-algebras follow naturally from this approach. Abstract:In "A Hosse diagram for rational toral tanks," we see a CW complex ${\mathcal T}(X)$, which gives a rational homotopical classification of almost free toral actions on spaces in the rational homotopy type of $X$ associated with rational toral ranks and also presents certain relations in them. We call it the {\it rational toral rank complex} of $X$. It represents a variety of toral actions. In this note, we will give effective 2-dimensional examples of it when $X$ is a finite product of odd spheres. This is a combinatorial approach in rational homotopy theory.

Abstract:Let $D \subseteq A$ be a quasi-Cartan pair of algebras. Then there exists a unique discrete groupoid twist $\Sigma \to G$ whose twisted Steinberg algebra is isomorphic to $A$ in a way that preserves $D$. In this paper, we show there is a lattice isomorphism between wide open subgroupoids of $G$ and subalgebras $C$ such that $D\subseteq C\subseteq A$ and $D \subseteq C$ is a quasi-Cartan pair. We also characterise which algebraic diagonal/algebraic Cartan/quasi-Cartan pairs have the property that every subalgebra $C$ with $D\subseteq C\subseteq A$ has $D \subseteq C$ a diagonal/Cartan/quasi-Cartan pair. In the diagonal case, when the coefficient ring is a field, it is all of them. Beyond that, only pairs that are close to being diagonal have this property. We then apply our techniques to C*-algebraic inclusions and give a complete characterization of which Cartan pairs $D \subseteq A$ have the property that every C*-subalgebra $C$ with $D\subseteq C\subseteq A$ has $D \subseteq C$ a Cartan pair.

Rational Curves on Real Classical Groups

Abstract:This paper is concerned with rational curves on real classical groups. Our contributions are three-fold: (i) We determine the structure of quadratic rational curves on real classical groups. As a consequence, we completely classify quadratic rational curves on $\mathrm{U}_n$, $\mathrm{O}_n(\mathbb{R})$, $\mathrm{O}_{n-1,1}(\mathbb{R})$ and $\mathrm{O}_{n-2,2}(\mathbb{R})$. (ii) We prove a decomposition theorem for rational curves on real classical groups, which can be regarded as a non-commutative generalization of the fundamental theorem of algebra and partial fraction decomposition. (iii) As an application of (i) and (ii), we generalize Kempe's Universality Theorem to rational curves on homogeneous spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct a recursive subhomogeneous decomposition for the Cuntz--Pimsner algebras obtained from breaking the orbit of a minimal Hilbert $C(X)$-bimodule at a subset $Y \subset X$ with non-empty interior. This generalizes the known recursive subhomogeneous decomposition for orbit-breaking subalgebras of crossed products by minimal homeomorphisms.

Abstract:We study the behaviour of the Igusa-Todorov functions for radical square zero algebras. We show that the left and the right $\phi$-dimensions coincide, in this case. Some general results are given, but we concentrate more in the radical square zero algebras. Our study is based on two notions of hearth and member of a quiver $Q$. We give some bounds for the $\phi$ and the $\psi$-dimensions and we describe the algebras for which the bound of $\psi$ is obtained. We also exhibit modules for which the $\phi$-dimension is realised.

Abstract:For an action of a finite group on a finite EI quiver, we construct its 'orbifold' quotient EI quiver. The free EI category associated to the quotient EI quiver is equivalent to the skew group category with respect to the given group action. Specializing the result to a finite group action on a finite acyclic quiver, we prove that, under reasonable conditions, the skew group category of the path category is equivalent to a finite EI category of Cartan type. If the ground field is of characteristic and the acting group is a cyclic -group, we prove that the skew group algebra of the path algebra is Morita equivalent to the algebra associated to a Cartan matrix, defined in [C. Geiss, B. Leclerc, and J. Schröer, Quivers with relations for symmetrizable Cartan matrices I: Foundations, Invent. Math. 209 (2017), 61–158]. We apply the Morita equivalence to construct a categorification of the folding projection between the root lattices with respect to a graph automorphism. In the Dynkin cases, the restriction of the categorification to indecomposable modules corresponds to the folding of positive roots.
