Abstract:The notion of almost elementariness for a locally compact Hausdorff étale groupoid $\mathcal{G}$ with a compact unit space was introduced by the authors as a sufficient condition ensuring the reduced groupoid $C^*$-algebra $C^*_r(\mathcal{G})$ is (tracially) $\mathcal{Z}$-stable and thus classifiable under additional natural assumption. In this paper, we explore the converse direction and show that many groupoids in the literature serving as models for classifiable $C^*$-algebras are almost elementary. In particular, for a large class $\mathcal{C}$ of Elliott invariants and a $C^*$-algebra $A$ with $\operatorname{Ell}(A)\in \mathcal{C}$, we show that $A$ is classifiable if and only if $A$ possesses a minimal, effective, amenable, second countable, almost elementary groupoid model, which leads to a groupoid-theoretic characterization of classifiability of $C^*$-algebras with certain Elliott invariants. Moreover, we build a connection between almost elementariness and pure infiniteness for groupoids and study obstructions to obtaining a transformation groupoid model for the Jiang-Su algebra $\mathcal{Z}$.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The core problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore under what conditions a locally compact Hausdorff étale groupoid (especially a groupoid with a compact unit space) can ensure that its reduced groupoid C* -algebra is Z -stable and thus can be classified when it satisfies certain natural assumptions. Specifically, the paper explores whether many groupoids known as models of classifiable C* -algebras are almost elementary, and further establishes the connection between almost -elementariness and pure infiniteness, and studies the obstacles to constructing transformation groupoid models for the Jiang -Su algebra Z. The main contributions of the paper are as follows: 1. **Almost -elementariness Conditions**: For each C* -algebra A in a large class C of Elliott invariants, if the Elliott invariant of A belongs to C, then A is classifiable if and only if A has a minimal, effective, countable, and almost -elementary groupoid model, which leads to a characterization of the classifiability of C* -algebras based on groupoid theory. 2. **The Relationship between Pure Infiniteness and Almost -elementariness**: The paper studies the relationship between almost -elementariness and pure infiniteness, and in particular, in the case where the unit space is compact and has no invariant measure, it proves that the two are equivalent. 3. **Obstacles to Model Construction of the Jiang -Su Algebra Z**: The paper also explores which classifiable C* -algebras can be represented as cross -products of group actions on compact metrizable spaces. In particular, it points out that the Jiang -Su algebra Z cannot be written in the form of a cross -product of Z unless the acting group Γ satisfies specific conditions (such as Γ must be commutative, torsion -free, and rationally cyclic), which excludes almost all naturally occurring examples and supports the necessity of using groupoids rather than just group actions in the study of classifiable C* -algebras. Through the above research, the paper not only deepens the understanding of the classification theory of C* -algebras but also provides new perspectives and tools for further research in this field.
