Abstract:For a transitive subgroup G ≤ S 6 which contain C 3 × C 3 as subgroup, we prove that K(x 1,…, x 6) G is rational over K, where K is any field, and G acts naturally on K(x 1,…, x 6) by permutations on the variables. We also give an application on construction of generic polynomials.

Abstract:For any field K and any transitive subgroup G of S8, let G act naturally on K(x1,…,x8) by permuting the variables. We prove that under some minor conditions K(x1,…,x8)G is always K-rational except G is A8 or G is isomorphic to PGL(2,7). We pay special attentions on the characteristic 2 cases.

Abstract:Let G be a finite subgroup of GL4(Q). The group G induces an action on Q(x1,x2,x3,x4), the rational function field of four variables over Q. Theorem. The fixed subfield Q(x1,x2,x3,x4)G:={f∈Q(x1,x2,x3,x4):σ⋅f=ffor anyσ∈G} is rational (i.e. purely transcendental) over Q, except for two groups which are images of faithful representations of C8 and C3⋊C8 into GL4(Q) (both fixed fields for these two exceptional cases are not rational over Q). There are precisely 227 such groups in GL4(Q) up to conjugation; the answers to the rationality problem for most of them were proved by Kitayama and Yamasaki (2009) [KY] except for four cases. We solve these four cases left unsettled by Kitayama and Yamasaki; thus the whole problem is solved completely.

Abstract:Let G be a subgroup of S 6 , the symmetric group of degree 6. For any field k , G acts naturally on the rational function field k ( x 1 , … , x 6 ) via k -automorphisms defined by σ ⋅ x i = x σ ( i ) for any σ ∈ G and any 1 ≤ i ≤ 6 . We prove the following theorem. The fixed field k ( x 1 , … , x 6 ) G is rational (i.e., purely transcendental) over k , except possibly when G is isomorphic to PSL 2 ( F 5 ) , PGL 2 ( F 5 ) , or A 6 . When G is isomorphic to PSL 2 ( F 5 ) or PGL 2 ( F 5 ) , then C ( x 1 , … , x 6 ) G is C -rational and k ( x 1 , … , x 6 ) G is stably k -rational for any field k . The invariant theory of wreath products will be investigated also.

Abstract:Let G be a subgroup of Sn, the symmetric group of degree n. For any field k, G acts naturally on the rational function field k(x1,⋯,xn) via k-automorphisms defined by σ⋅xi:=xσ⋅i for any σ∈G and 1≤i≤n. In this article, we will show that if G is a solvable transitive subgroup of S14 and char(k)=7, then the fixed subfield k(x1,⋯,x14)G is rational (i.e., purely transcendental) over k. In proving the above theorem, we rely on the Kuniyoshi–Gaschütz Theorem or some ideas in its proof.

Abstract:Let k be a field, G be a finite group and k(x_g:g∈ G) be the rationalfunction field over k, on which G acts by k-automorphisms defined byh· x_g=x_hg for any g,h∈ G. Noether's problem asks whether thefixed subfield k(G):=k(x_g:g∈ G)^G is k-rational, i.e. purelytranscendental over k. If S_n is the double cover of thesymmetric group S_n, in which the liftings of transpositions and products ofdisjoint transpositions are of order 4, Serre shows thatQ(S_4) and Q(S_5) are not Q-rational.We will prove that, if k is a field such that char k ≠ 2, 3, andk(ζ_8) is a cyclic extension of k, then k(S_4) isk-rational. If it is assumed furthermore that chark=0, thenk(S_5) is also k-rational.

Abstract:Let X be an irreducible variety and Bir(X) its group of birational transformations. We show that the group structure of Bir(X) determines whether X is rational and whether X is ruled. Additionally, we prove that any Borel subgroup of Bir(X) has derived length at most twice the dimension of X, with equality occurring if and only if X is rational and the Borel subgroup is standard. We also provide examples of non-standard Borel subgroups of Bir(P^n) and Aut(A^n), thereby resolving conjectures by Popov and Furter-Poloni.

Rational Curves on Real Classical Groups

Abstract:This paper is concerned with rational curves on real classical groups. Our contributions are three-fold: (i) We determine the structure of quadratic rational curves on real classical groups. As a consequence, we completely classify quadratic rational curves on $\mathrm{U}_n$, $\mathrm{O}_n(\mathbb{R})$, $\mathrm{O}_{n-1,1}(\mathbb{R})$ and $\mathrm{O}_{n-2,2}(\mathbb{R})$. (ii) We prove a decomposition theorem for rational curves on real classical groups, which can be regarded as a non-commutative generalization of the fundamental theorem of algebra and partial fraction decomposition. (iii) As an application of (i) and (ii), we generalize Kempe's Universality Theorem to rational curves on homogeneous spaces.

Abstract:Let G be a finite group and k be a field. Let G act on the rational function field k(x g : g ∈ G) by k-automorphisms defined by g ∙ x h = x gh for any g, h ∈ G. Noether's problem asks whether the fixed field k(G) = k(x g : g ∈ G) G is rational (i.e., purely transcendental) over k. Theorem 1. If G is a group of order 2 n (n ≥ 4) and of exponent 2 e such that (i) e ≥ n − 2 and (ii) $ {\zeta_{{{2^{{e - 1}}}}}} \in k $, then k(G) is k-rational. Theorem 2. Let G be a group of order 4n where n is any positive integer (it is unnecessary to assume that n is a power of 2). Assume that (i) char k ≠ 2, $ {\zeta_n} \in k $, and (ii) G contains an element of order n. Then k(G) is rational over k, except for the case n = 2 m and G ≃ C m ⋊ C 8 where m is an odd integer and the center of G is of even order (note that C m is normal in Cm ⋊ C 8); for the exceptional case, k(G) is rational over k if and only if at least one of −1; 2;−2 belongs to (k ×)2.
On quadratic rational Frobenius groups

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group and, for a given complex character $\chi$ of $G$, let ${\mathbb{Q}}(\chi)$ denote the field extension of ${\mathbb{Q}}$ obtained by adjoining all the values $\chi(g)$, for $g\in G$. The group $G$ is called quadratic rational if, for every irreducible complex character $\chi\in{\rm{Irr}}(G)$, the field ${\mathbb{Q}}(\chi)$ is an extension of ${\mathbb{Q}}$ of degree at most $2$. Quadratic rational groups have a nice characterization in terms of the structure of the group of central units in their integral group ring, and in fact they generalize the well-known concept of a cut group (i.e., a finite group whose integral group ring has a finite group of central units). In this paper we classify the Frobenius groups that are quadratic rational, a crucial step in the project of describing the Gruenberg-Kegel graphs associated to quadratic rational groups. It turns out that every Frobenius quadratic rational group is uniformly semi-rational, i.e., it satisfies the following property: all the generators of any cyclic subgroup of $G$ lie in at most two conjugacy classes of $G$, and these classes are permuted by the same element of the Galois group ${\rm{Gal}}({\mathbb{Q}}_{|G|}/{\mathbb{Q}})$ (in general, every cut group is uniformly semi-rational, and every uniformly semi-rational group is quadratic rational). We will also see that the class of groups here considered coincides with the one studied in [4], thus the main result of this paper also completes the analysis carried out in [4].

If (S) over cap (n) is the double cover of the symmetric group S-n, in which the liftings of transpositions and products of disjoint transpositions are of order 4, Serre shows that Q((S) over cap (4)) and Q((S) over cap (5)) are not Q-rational. Abstract:This text, Chapter 23 in the "AutoMathA" handbook, is devoted to the study of rational subsets of groups, with particular emphasis on the automata-theoretic approach to finitely generated subgroups of free groups. Indeed, Stallings' construction, associating a finite inverse automaton with every such subgroup, inaugurated a complete rewriting of free group algorithmics, with connections to other fields such as topology or dynamics. Another important vector in the chapter is the fundamental Benois' Theorem, characterizing rational subsets of free groups. The theorem and its consequences really explain why language theory can be successfully applied to the study of free groups. Rational subsets of (free) groups can play a major role in proving statements (a priori unrelated to the notion of rationality) by induction. The chapter also includes related results for more general classes of groups, such as virtually free groups or graph groups.

Abstract:We provide new examples of groups without rational cross-sections (also called regular normal forms), using connections with bounded generation and rational orders on groups. Specifically, our examples are extensions of infinite torsion groups, groups of Grigorchuk type, wreath products similar to $C_2\wr(C_2\wr \mathbb Z)$ and $\mathbb Z\wr F_2$, a group of permutations of $\mathbb Z$, and a finitely presented HNN extension of the first Grigorchuk group. This last group is the first example of finitely presented group with solvable word problem and without rational cross-sections. It is also not autostackable, and has no left-regular complete rewriting system.

Abstract:We present a method to explicitly compute a complete set of orthogonal primitive idempotents in a simple component with Schur index 1 of a rational group algebra $\mathbb{Q}G$ for $G$ a finite generalized strongly monomial group. For the same groups with no exceptional simple components in $\mathbb{Q}G$, we describe a subgroup of finite index in the group of units $\mathcal{U}(\mathbb{Z}G)$ of the integral group ring $\mathbb{Z}G$ that is generated by three nilpotent groups for which we give explicit description of their generators. We exemplify the theoretical constructions with a detailed concrete example to illustrate the theory. We also show that the Frobenius groups of odd order with a cyclic complement is a class of generalized strongly monomial groups where the theory developed in this paper is applicable.

Abstract:The paper concerns the automorphism groups of Cayley graphs over cyclic groups which have a rational spectrum (rational circulant graphs for short). With the aid of the techniques of Schur rings it is shown that the problem is equivalent to consider the automorphism groups of orthogonal group block structures of cyclic groups. Using this observation, the required groups are expressed in terms of generalized wreath products of symmetric groups.

Abstract:We show that every finite abelian group $G$ occurs as the group of rational points of an ordinary abelian variety over $\mathbb{F}_2$, $\mathbb{F}_3$ and $\mathbb{F}_5$. We produce partial results for abelian varieties over a general finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. In particular, we show that certain abelian groups cannot occur as groups of rational points of abelian varieties over $\mathbb{F}_q$ when $q$ is large. Finally, we show that every finite cyclic group arises as the group of rational points of infinitely many simple abelian varieties over $\mathbb{F}_2$.

Abstract:This paper examines fields of rationality in families of cuspidal automorphic representations of unitary groups. Specifically, for a fixed A and a sufficiently large family F , a small proportion of representations π ∈ F will satisfy [ Q ( π ) : Q ] ≤ A . Like earlier work of Shin and Templier, the result depends on a Plancherel equidistribution result for the local components of representations in families. An innovation of our work is an upper bound on the number of discrete series GL n ( L ) representations with small field of rationality, counted with appropriate multiplicity, which in turn depends upon an asymptotic character expansion of Murnaghan and formal degree computations of Aubert and Plymen.
