Abstract:The paper presents a novel fault line selection using single-phase current traveling wave after analyzing each phase current traveling wave of fault line and sound lines generated by single-phase-to-ground fault. Whether the phase is faulted phase or sound phase, single-phase-to-ground fault generated current traveling wave in faulted line is much higher than the wave in sound line, and the polarity is reverse. The method works well without special zero-sequence current transducer and is easy to be implemented in the field with simple wiring compared with two-phase or three-phase current traveling wave methods. And the method can not only be applied to cable lines but also overhead lines. Simulation results show that the method is correct and available. Abstract:Fault line selection is important to maintenance and normal operation of power distribution system. If a fault does not disappear for a long time, it could develop into a phase to phase fault. Then the fault line should be found out as quickly as possible and the fault should be removed. Thus, to select a good method of fault line selection is necessary. A transient signal may be a selection for fault line selection. A travelling wave is a transient signal. It will be more suitable to analyzing the single phase to ground fault because the fault itself is a transient process. But there are two problems to effect the use of the travelling wave signal: first, it is a high frequency signal, so it is hard to distinguish from noise; and secondly there is lack of a proper method to detect and describe the travelling wave signal. Traditional power signals analysis tools are limited in the presence of nonsteady signals. The travelling wave signal possesses a mutant property. In mathematics, it is the function of not only time but also frequency. These problems are solved with the wavelet transform. Abstract:Detection and selection of single-phase-to-ground fault in distribution system with non-solid-grounded neural are difficult. A new principle based on transient current traveling waves is presented to solve the problem. Through comparing the first current travelling waves of different lines at the bus bar, the fault line, whose first current travelling wave is of the reverse polarity and higher amplitude, is selected. In order to clearly recognize the traveling wave signal generated by fault, a new analysis tool, the wavelet transform is adopted. The new principle is also suitable for application to distribution and transmission system with solid grounded neutral. Extensive theoretical studies and simulations using EMTP prove the feasibility of the proposed fault line selection method.

Abstract:This paper presents a new principle of fault analyzing based on initial current traveling waves and a new algorithm of fault detection and fault phase selection based on the wavelet transforms. Through comparing the amplitudes of module maxima of wavelet transform in different scales, the fault can be detected. Through matching the characteristics of different fault types, the fault phase can be identified. This new approach of fault detection and fault phase selection, including the new principle and new algorithm, is specially designed for the ultra-high-speed protective relaying, which is based on the traveling waves. The use of the new approach provides an attractive potential solution to the long-standing problems of accurate and fast fault detection and fault phase selection. Extensive theoretical studies and simulations using EMTP have proved that the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed new approach.

Abstract:The early traveling wave faulted-phase selectors, due to lack of effective tool to process transient signals, had to directly used instantaneous values of signals so that they cannot overcome such bad influence as noise disturbance. Fortunately, wavelet analysis, with its time-frequency localization ability and the wavelet transform modulus maxima (WTMM) concept, is well suited to treat with singularity of fault-generated traveling waves in EHV/UHV transmission lines. This paper presents a novel approach to fast and accurate phase-selection, which used the WTMM of initial model current traveling waves according to the fault characteristic relations deduced from the boundary conditions of various types of faults. The criterion is explicit in characteristics and physical concepts, and is apt to be realized. A large number of EMTP simulations demonstrated the new faulted-phase selection algorithm.
Power System Fault Detection Based on Stationary Wavelet Packet Transform and Hilbert Transform

Abstract:Based on stationary wavelet packet transform and Hilbert transform, the paper proposes a fault detection algorithm, which adaptively extracts the fault characteristic component of the signal. Firstly, the algorithm uses one-level stationary wavelet packet transform to decompose the signal into low- and high-frequency sub-bands. Subsequently, Hilbert transform is used to obtain the instantaneous frequency and instantaneous amplitude of the low- or high-frequency sub-band. Based on the preset frequency and amplitude criteria, the algorithm decides whether to further decompose the sub-band or hold it. Thus the algorithm adaptively selects the path of stationary wavelet packet decomposition, making a multi-resolution spectral analysis on the signal and extracting the characteristic components for fault detection. The simulations show that the algorithm provides sufficient frequency-amplitude fault information with the less computational workloads and has better anti-noise performance.

Abstract:Traveling wave method has been proved to be effective in fault line selection of power distribution system with the neutral non-effectively grounded. However, it can be easily disturbed by non-faulty traveling wave when selecting the line. For this reason, this paper proposes a new traveling wave line selection method based on sparse representation, in which current traveling wave signals are measured for the selection task. The algorithm of selection is based on the idea that all non-zero terms in the sparse coefficients of the measured signal are found to be associated with training samples from a single class, and the test samples can be easily assigned to the class. This makes it possible to distinguish between the non-faulty traveling wave and the real fault traveling wave.

Abstract:Through analysis of various concept methods, developing route selection device based on double tree complex wavelet and transient energy, use the method based on transient component can improve line selection accuracy effectively. sensitivity and directional selectivity can improved by using dual tree complex wavelet transform than using discrete wavelet translation, the method can’t infect by the line of power system and the condition of the fault line. The simulation results show that by using the dual tree complex wavelet analysis in suitable scale can select the fault line correctly.

Abstract:Because power frequency fault current is very small in amplitude and the system may operate under an asymmetry condition, it is very difficult to correctly identify the faulted line when single phase to ground fault (SFG) occurs in distribution system with non-effectively grounded (NNG) neutral. After analyzing the characteristics of transient traveling waves resulted from SFG in distribution system with wavelet transform, it is found that the initial transient current traveling waves is irrespective of the neural grounding mode when SFG occurs in this paper. According to fact described above, a new faulted line identification algorithm based on transient traveling waves and wavelet transform is proposed. The simulation result demonstrates that the new algorithm is valid. The algorithm is a new idea and is used to design a new principle of fault line selection for NNG system and it can suit for the every case with different CT.

Abstract:Accurate fault classification and swift faulted-phase selection are the bases of protection for transmission systems. This paper presents the algorithm of fault classification and faulted-phase selection based on the initial current traveling wave. The characteristics of various faults are investigated on the basis of the Karenbauer transform. The criteria of fault classification and faulted-phase selection are put forward. In order to extract the traveling wave from postfault signals and to construct the algorithm, wavelet transform technology is adopted. The simulations based on the electromagnetic transients program have been done to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:The paper presents the implementation scheme of fault line selector using zero module current travelling waves with the application of a wavelet transform technique. The proposed scheme designs high-speed acquisition unit to achieve sampling current travelling wave signals, uses wavelet multi-resolution analysis to decompose the travelling wave signals, and extracts the local modulus maxima to represent the characteristics of the signals. In the implementation scheme the local modulus maxima of all lines are compared with each other to determine the fault line. In order to test the fault line selector implemented, one filed test has been carried out, which was presented in the paper. The field test result shows that the fault line selector can acquire single-phase-to-ground fault generated zero module current travelling wave information in neutral point non-effectively grounded distribution system and can identify the fault line correctly.

Abstract:In order to verify the correctness of the principle and functions of fault line selector based on current traveling wave, this paper reports the results of tests under all kinds of really grounded fault conditions in distribution systems simulated by transient relay testing device. Those tests include high-speed sampling and communication, selecting the exact fault line and alarming under different current transformer configurations, different ways of neural grounded systems, and different fault resistances. Results show that the principle of the device is correct and its functions meet the requirement of design.

Abstract:A new scheme for the high impedance faults(HIF) detection in double-circuit lines was presented.It is based on wavelet transform,particularly the multiresolution analysis technique.With wavelet transform,the six line currents of the double-circuit lines at each end can be projected to the different scales.The ratio of the energy of the corresponding scales in the same phases is then calculated,which can be used to discriminate the fault line and phase and to locate the protection setting zone.The investigation results show that the scheme can detect the HIF with high sensitivity and selectivity during all operating conditions.

Abstract:With the extensive use of power cable in China, power cable fault is also increasing year by year, seriously affecting the power grid and the national economy. Cable location is the precondition of eliminating cable faults. But up to now, mature cable fault location methods in the world are mostly based on off-lion status and there is still lack of effective method on-line method. So it has practical significance to study cable on-line fault location. In this paper, wavelet analysis concept is introduced, and research wavelet application in on-line fault location which based on multi-resolution analysis and modulus maximums. Three methods are proposed: line model time difference method, line-zero module time difference method and wave velocity irrelevant method. Those three methods are also simulated and compared in different fault situation. Cable fault simulation model is building in Matlab, after the Analysis of the results, arrive at a more appropriate method.

Abstract:Aiming at the problems of the complex line selection process and slow line selection speed of the existing intelligent classification line selection methods, a single-phase grounding fault line selection method based on the dynamic time warping (DTW) algorithm is proposed. The wavelet modulus maximum truncates the original signal to extract the temporary part. Then the DTW distance matrix between feeders is figured by the DTW algorithm. The fault line selection is realized by comparing the difference between the maximum, sub maximum, and minimum values with the threshold value. The simulation shows that the proposed approach can recognize proper line selection under various fault states and partial loss of recorded data, has high accuracy and has better robustness than the Euclidean distance and person correlation coefficient methods.

Abstract:It's of great significance to make use of fault record data to select the fault line exactly and provide a real-time or quasi real-time referenced decision-making message. The four-rank center B-spline semi-orthonormalt dyadic wavelet is proposed to find out the singular points of the fault currents and the theory basis is discussed in detail. On the basis of the discussion above, the abrupt change characteristic of the fault line currents is analyzed in detail in virtue of the configured time of primary protection and the re-closing interval when a simple fault occurs on lines in local substation and nearby substation of EHV multi-loops power network under several circumstances such as normal relay and breaker, action-resistant relay or breaker, faulty relay or breaker. The result of simulation indicates that this algorithm in this paper is exact, efficient, and practicable.

Abstract:Wave-head characteristics of the fault-generated travelling wave on transmission line in different frequency bands are studied by using wavelet multi-resolution decomposition in this paper. Firstly, the travelling wave process on transmission line is analyzed and the fault-generated travelling wave is described by analytical expression. Then, the fault-generated travelling wave is decomposed into two parts: the irregular travelling wave component and the regular travelling wave component. It is verified by simulation that the wavelet modulus maxima of the fault-generated travelling wave and the irregular travelling wave are the same under low scales or high frequency bands. Finally, wave-head characteristics are obtained across scales by using the irregular travelling wave component instead of the fault-generated travelling wave on the premise of low wavelet scales or high frequency bands and wave-head steepness is considered. As the wavelet scale increases, the polarity of the wave-head keeps unchanged. Besides, the amplitude of the wave-head rises and approaches the value of the original wave-head amplitude, and the arrival time of the wave-head rises.
