Abstract:By analyzing the structure characteristics of arbitrary n-polygon noncircular sections, mathematical formulas among the characteristic parameters were set up, and a theorem for designing this kind of sections was deduced by mathematical induction method. Based on the mechanistic transmission principle, the control theorems for the numerical control (NC) grinding of arbitrary n-polygon noncircular sections and the control model for the multicoordinate motion were built. A feed rate self-adjusting method was proposed to uniform the grinding speed with the changes of sectional curvature. Then, an NC machine tool for grinding n-polygon noncircular sections was developed. The test results of the grinded parts showed that the section profiles accorded with the design demands: the roughness was less than 0.32 μm and the dimensional accuracy was within 8 μm. The results prove that the proposed theorems and method can effectively direct the design and manufacture of the polygonal noncircular connection.
Analysis of 3D Curve Expansion of Conical Cam with Oscillating Tapered Roller Follower

Abstract:This paper focuses on the analysis of running conditions and machining processes of conical cam with oscillating follower. We point out the common errors existing in the design and machining of the widely used plane expansion method of conical cam trough-out line. We show that the motion can be divided into two parts, i.e. the oscillating motion of oscillating bar and the rotary motion of oscillating bar relative to the conical cam. By increasing the rotary motion of oscillating bar, the motion path of tapered roller on oscillating bar (i.e. contour surface of conical cam) can be expanded on the cylinder. Based on these analyses, we present a creative and effective designing and machining method for 3D curve expansion of conical cam with oscillating follower.

Abstract:This paper presents a new approach of designing the revolving cutter with constant pitch, and pro-vides geometric models. The corresponding models in the non-numerically controlled manufacturing, such asdesigning the helical groove, grinding wheel, relative feeding motion, and calculating the helical angle of thecutting edge, are introduced. The examples are given to testify that the design approach is simple and readilyrealized in machining the revolving cutter with constant pitch. The effective design and manufacture method pro-vides general references for non-NC machining revolving cutter with constant pitch and reducing the equipmentsinput.

Abstract:This paper presents general geometrical models of the cutting edge and groove section of a helical end-mill with constant pitch. The section profile and relative feeding speeds of the grinding wheel used in 2-axis NC machining of the end-mill are deduced. The actual groove and cutting edge of a taper toroid-shaped end-mill are simulated. The approach of eliminating the remaining revolving surface is introduced. This paper presents a reliable method for the design and 2-axis machining of a helical end-mill.

Abstract:The expression of the flute of conical screw with continuous grading lead was complex in theory. To obtain the special screw with high accuracy, the machining principle must be studied and the mathematical model should be built. Based on the envelope principle of complex surface,a conclusion was drawn that the shape in normal section of these screws could not be the same. The profile design of the cutters could only be approximate. The method with non-instant center machining could be used. To ensure the machining of each helical line on the surface of the teeth along axis,a machine tool with five axes must be adopted,which was complex. So a scheme of approximate machining using CNC system was put forward and only three axis machine tool was needed. The model for machining was built and the mechanism was given.

Abstract:： Accurate calculate the machined transverse profile of part for helical feature manufacturing is a significant question. Unlike the traditional methods such as analytical ones, discrete ones and Boolean ones solve problems in 3-D space, through mapping the transvers profile identification problem from 3-D space to image space based on the visibility theory, a OpenGL-assist implicit graphic rendering calculate method is developed. At first, the mathematical model for the forming machining of the helical feature is constructed. Then, the rendering based calculate theory is analyzed through the relationship between the 3-D space and image space. Next, the entire calculate method is detailed presented in the aspects of mapping between the 3-D space and image space, how the operation of the pixel rendering indicates the intersection in 3-D space, and the result extraction from image space to 3-D space. Meanwhile, the complete calculate frame and corresponding function groups are provided. At last, the profile calculation of for a helical groove milling by a taper cutter is taken to proof the effectiveness of proposed method via comparing with the analytical result.

Abstract:Milling has the characteristics of flexibility and versatility, and can largely reduce the production cycle of customized tools. This study aims to mill helical surfaces of uniform roughness with universal tools in four-axis CNC machine tools through designing the optimal milling path. The transverse profile of the involute gear is modeled by the analytical method and the equidistant profile of the transverse profile is established by using the principle of normal offset to provide a theoretical tool position for tool paths. Aiming at the problem of unequal adjacent line spacing generated in the determination of the number of feed lines based on a constant angle, a determination method of the number of feed lines based on a constant arc length is proposed. In this method, according to the principle of calculus, the arc length of the involute curve is calculated to determine the proper number of feed lines which allows the scallop height to be approximately uniformly distributed on the tooth surface. In milling experiments, the processing efficiencies of LRTSLBL milling and LRTSTBT milling were confirmed and the peak of pitch under a small volume of tool wear was avoided by LRTSLBL milling. Importantly, the skip tooth machining test by LRTSTBT milling confirmed the cause for pitch peak and provided the basis for pitch error compensation.

Abstract:Aiming at the problems in current cam profile optimization processes, such as simple dynamics models, limited geometric accuracy and low design automatization level, a new dynamic optimization mode is put forward. Based on the parameterization modeling technique of MSC.ADAMS platform, the different steps in current mode are reorganized, thus obtaining an upgraded mode called the "parameterized-prototype-based cam profile dynamic optimization mode". A parameterized prototype(PP) of valve mechanism is constructed in the course of dynamic optimization for cam profiles. Practically, by utilizing PP and considering the flexibility of the parts in valve mechanism, geometric accuracy and design automatization are improved.

Abstract:Three profiles of unsymmetrical cam in the forms of polydyne(POL),individual section acceleration(ISAC) and POL-ISAC curves were used in the valve cam design for a high speed diesel engine with side-mounted camshaft.Using two-mass kinetic models,displacement and speed curves of these profiles were calculated.Analyzing their fullness coefficient,jerk and max.contact stress between cam and tappet,the final optimized profile was determined.Based on the multi-freedom dynamic model,comparing with the original profile demonstrate the optimized profile has been improved in terms of impact force of valve on its seat,contact stress between cam and tappet,valve acceleration,valve speed and displacement,etc.

Abstract:By use of the theoretical surface the path of the axis of the roller of space cams, the cams with cylindrical roller-followers were discussed and a conclusion that the theoretical surface and real surface are offset surfaces was derived. A simple and useful procedure used to determine the real surface was presented. This method establishes the mapping relationships among the axis of roller, the theoretical surface and real surface, and gets the simple analytical equation of the real surface. The proposed analytical model of the synthesis of offset surface can be widely used, and can satisfy the needs of CAD of cams. Compared with the conventional methods such as envelope theory and conjugating theory, this method has the features of conceptual clarity and simplicity of computation, avoiding complex solutions of the constrain equations.

Abstract:Regenerative chatter is a major limitation in the milling of Ti-6Al-4 V causing poor surface quality and machining efficiency. As Ti-6Al-4 V is difficult to cut materials, identification of deep stable pockets using stability diagrams and spindle speed variation is not effective due to the high spindle speed zones. An effective way for improving the milling stability is the application of variable pitch tools. With properly designed unequal pitch angles, the destabilizing regenerative is perturbed to suppress chatter. This research aims to present a simple and effective tuning method to optimize design variable pitch angles. The Routh-criterion method is used to analyze the delay differential equation (DDE), and the results indicated that additional damping and stiffness introduced by time delay are two key factors that make the machining system unstable. To modify time delay and to minimize the additional damping and stiffness, a tuning method is built up to determine appropriate pitch angles. Considering the tool manual’s recommend cutting conditions, the typical variable pitch milling tools are designed, manufactured, and applied in the milling of Ti-6Al-4 V to evaluate their effectiveness. This research findings have indicated that the milling tool having pitch angles of 85–95–85–95° showed the process stability with a 60% increase in axial depth of cut.

Abstract:Mathematical expressions are derived for the rake normal for the taper mill cutter in accordance with the requirements of equal helical angle and prescribed distribution of rake angle along the cutter edge. These requirements could be achieved by the movements of the three axes numerical control (NC) machine. The rake flank form is simulated in several different translational sections of the taper mill cutter with the aid of computer graphics simulation (CGS). A rational determination of the scraps groove depth is also obtained.

Abstract:Form cutter is used for machining serrated thread in factory,because its tooth shape is special,its depth and width is much bigger than general thread,its working angle and non-working angle is unequal.By analysis of the tooth shape and the dimensional tolerance of external serrated thread,this paper designs a universal macro program for machining serrated thread based on the method of incrementally approaching to the envelope curves,also machining precision and some technique problems were analyzed.Using the universal macro program,by modifying the values of thread parameters with,user can machine a series of external serrated thread with different diameter and pitch of screws by using common cutter.
