Abstract:A sufficient condition on the existence of the maximal and minimal solvents of the quadratic matrix equation: Q(X)=AX~2+BX+C=0 is given in this paper. The properties of the λ-matrix polynormal Q(λ) are also discussed.

Abstract:A necessary and sufficient condition was presented for the quadratic stability of interval matrices and a related calculation method of stability margin. The results were obtained in terms of LMIs. With the powerful LMI toolbox, it was very convenient to solve this problem. Examples showed that this method is effective in determining the robust stability and related stability margin of interval matrices.

Abstract:An elegant property of the maximal solution to the matrix equation X+ATX-1A=I is presented.The property shows that the maximal solution is well-conditioned.Two new iteration methods for finding the maximal solution are proposed.Of these two methods,one is a linearly convergent iteration without matrix inversion,and one is related to Newton's method and quadratically convergent.The convergence analysis is also given.Comparisons have been made with other known methods.In all test problems the new quadratically convergent method appeared to be far superior to the other methods.

Abstract:A quadratically convergent algorithm (QCA) for solving the extreme solutions of the matrix equation AX2+BX+C=0 was proposed by Bini and Meini. In this paper, we present a new derivation for this algorithm and a new proof for the convergence theory by using a structure-preserving transformation of a matrix pencil. Since only the knowledge of the elementary matrix theory is used, the derivation and the proof are very concise and pellucid.

Abstract:In this paper, the linear matrix equation X = AXB* + BXA* + Q is considered, which is called the mixed-type Lyapunov equation. Some necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a unique solution are presented. Since a Hermitian positive semidefinite solution is important from the application point of view, some sufficient conditions for the existence of a Hermitian positive semidefinite solution are derived.

Abstract:Let $B$ and $C$ be square complex matrices. The differential equation \begin{equation*} x''(t)+Bx'(t)+Cx(t)=f(t) \end{equation*} is considered. A solvent is a matrix solution $X$ of the equation $X^2+BX+C=\mathbf0$. A pair of solvents $X$ and $Z$ is called complete if the matrix $X-Z$ is invertible. Knowing a complete pair of solvents $X$ and $Z$ allows us to reduce the solution of the initial value problem to the calculation of two matrix exponentials $e^{Xt}$ and $e^{Zt}$. The problem of finding a complete pair $X$ and $Z$, which leads to small rounding errors in solving the differential equation, is discussed.

Abstract:For a given p×q complex matrix C , a necessary and sufficient condition is obtained for the existence of a matrix X satisfying JpX−XJq=C , here Jr denotes the r×r Jordan block of 0. An easy construction of the solution X is given if it exists. These results lead to a proof of the fact that a nilpotent matrix is similar to a direct sum of Jordan blocks.

Abstract:Consider the problem of finding the maximal nonpositive solvent $\Phi$ of the quadratic matrix equation (QME) $X^2 + BX + C =0$ with $B$ being a nonsingular $M$-matrix and $C$ an $M$-matrix such that $B^{-1}C\ge 0$, and $B - C - I$ a nonsingular $M$-matrix. Such QME arises from an overdamped vibrating system. Recently, Yu et al. ({\em Appl. Math. Comput.}, 218: 3303--3310, 2011) proved that $\rho(\Phi)\le 1$ for this QME. In this paper, we slightly improve their result and prove $\rho(\Phi)< 1$, which is important for the quadratic convergence of the structure-preserving doubling algorithm. Then, a new globally monotonically and quadratically convergent structure-preserving doubling algorithm to solve the QME is developed. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of our method.

Sufficient conditions for the unique solvability of absolute value matrix equations

Abstract:In this paper, we discussed the unique solvability of the two absolute value matrix equations. The unique solvability condition $\rho (\vert A^{-1} B \vert)<1$ is provided for the generalized absolute value matrix equation (GAVME) $AX + B \vert X \vert = F$. This condition is superior to that of Kumar et al. [J. Numer. Anal. Approx. Theory, 51(1) (2022) 83-87]. We also discussed different conditions for the unique solvability of the new generalized absolute value matrix equation (NGAVME) $AX+B\vert CX \vert=F$ with $A, B, C, F, X \in \mathcal{R}^{n \times n}$. We also provided the corrected version of Corollary 2.1 from the published work by Wang et al. [Appl. Math. Lett., 116 (2021) 106966].

Abstract:Consider the nonlinear matrix equation X-sum_{i=1}^{m}A_{i}^{*}X^{-1}A_{i}=Q. This paper shows that there exists a unique positive definite solution to the equation without any restriction on A_{i}. Three perturbation bounds for the unique solution to the equation are evaluated. A backward error of an approximate solution for the unique solution to the equation is derived. Explicit expressions of the condition number for the unique solution to the equation are obtained. The theoretical results are illustrated by numerical examples.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the positive definite solutions to the matrix equation X+AX −1 A = I where X is the unknown and A is a given complex matrix. By introducing and studying a matrix operator on complex matrices, it is shown that the existence of positive definite solutions of this class of nonlinear matrix equations is equivalent to the existence of positive definite solutions of the nonlinear matrix equation W + BWB = I which has been extensively studied in the literature, where B is a real matrix and is uniquely determined by A. It is also shown that if the considered nonlinear matrix equation has a positive definite solution, then it has the maximal and minimal solutions. Bounds of the positive definite solutions are also established in terms of matrix A. Finally some sufficient conditions and necessary conditions for the existence of positive definite solutions of the equations are also proposed.

Abstract:We exhibit an explicit formula for the cardinality of solutions to a class of quadratic matrix equations over finite fields. We prove that the orbits of these solutions under the natural conjugation action of the general linear groups can be separated by classical conjugation invariants defined by characteristic polynomials. We also find a generating set for the vanishing ideal of these orbits.
