Abstract:The matrix equation EX̅F - AX = C is investigated in this study, and three approaches are provided to solve this equation. The first approach is to transform it into a real matrix equation with the help of real representation of complex matrices. In the second approach, the solution is given in terms of characteristic polynomial of a constructed matrix pair. In the third approach, the solution can be neatly expressed in terms of controllability matrices and observability matrices. By specialising the obtained solutions of EX̅F - AX = C, some new expressions of the generalised Sylvester matrix equations are also provided.

Abstract:This paper studies the solvability, existence of unique solution, closed-form solution and numerical solution of matrix equation X=AfXB+C with fX=XT, fX=X¯ and fX=XH, where X is the unknown. It is proven that the solvability of these equations is equivalent to the solvability of some auxiliary standard Stein equations in the form of W=AWB+C where the dimensions of the coefficient matrices A,B and C are the same as those of the original equation. Closed-form solutions of equation X=AfXB+C can then be obtained by utilizing standard results on the standard Stein equation. On the other hand, some generalized Stein iterations and accelerated Stein iterations are proposed to obtain numerical solutions of equation X=AfXB+C. Necessary and sufficient conditions are established to guarantee the convergence of the iterations.

Abstract:It is shown in this paper that three types of matrix equations AX−XF=BY,AX−EXF=BY and AXI−EXF=BY which have wide applications in control systems theory, are equivalent to the matrix equation AXℱ−X=ℬY with their coefficient matrices satisfying some relations. Based on right coprime factorization to (sA−I)−1ℬ, explicit solutions to the equation AXℱ−X=ℬY are proposed and thus explicit solutions to the former three types of matrix equations can be immediately established. With the special structure of the proposed solutions, necessary conditions to the nonsingularity of matrix X are also obtained. The proposed solutions give an ultimate and unified formula for the explicit solutions to these four types of linear matrix equations.

Abstract:Closed form solutions to a family of generalized Sylvester matrix equation in form of ∑i=0ϕAiXFi+∑i=0ψBkYFk=∑j=0φEjRFj are given by using the so-called Kronecker matrix polynomials. It is found that the structure of the solutions is independent of the orders ϕ,ψ and φ. This type of uniform closed form solutions includes our early results as special cases. The results provide great convenience to the computation and analysis of the solutions to this class of equations, and can perform important functions in many analysis and design problems in linear systems.

Abstract:This study studies the matrix equation AX - XB = C, which has many important applications in control theory, by using spectral decompositions of A and B. By establishing solvability conditions and solutions to the standard vector equation Ax = c, and the spectral decompositions of the associated nivellateur of the matrix equation, necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of the matrix equation are provided in terms of the coefficients of the spectral decompositions of A and B. Moreover, explicit solutions are provided, which are also based on the coefficients of the spectral decompositions of A and B. The obtained results include the existing ones as special cases, and, moreover, correct some errors in the existing methods. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated by some illustrative examples.

Abstract:A complete, general and explicit solution to the generalized Sylvester matrix equation AX−XF=BY, with the matrix F in a companion form, is proposed. The solution is in an extremely neat form represented by a symmetric operator matrix, a Hankel matrix and the controllability matrix of the matrix pair (A,B). Furthermore, several equivalent forms of this solution are also presented. Based on these presented results, explicit solutions to the normal Sylvester equation and the well-known Lyapunov matrix equation are also established. The results provide great convenience to the analysis of the solution to the equation, and can perform important functions in many analysis and design problems in control systems theory. As a demonstration, a simple and effective approach for parametric pole assignment is proposed.

Abstract:The con-Yakubovich matrix equation X - AX̅F = BY is investigated in this paper. An explicit general solution of this equation is given by a finite sum. In addition, the solution can be equivalently expressed in terms of con-controllability and con-observability. Another feature of the obtained solution is that the matrix F explicitly appears in the expression, which allows the matrix F to be undetermined. Finally, a numerical example is employed to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:A quadratically convergent algorithm (QCA) for solving the extreme solutions of the matrix equation AX2+BX+C=0 was proposed by Bini and Meini. In this paper, we present a new derivation for this algorithm and a new proof for the convergence theory by using a structure-preserving transformation of a matrix pencil. Since only the knowledge of the elementary matrix theory is used, the derivation and the proof are very concise and pellucid.

Abstract:The problem of solving the matrix equation AX-EXY=BY is studied in this paper.Firstly,a complete general parametric expression for (X,Y) satisfying this equation is obtained.Here matrix triple (E,A,B) is R-controllable and F is an arbitrary matrix.Compared with existing results,the algorithm does not need the matrices F and A to be in any canonical forms and the knowledge of their eigenvalues.Furthermore,this type of solution has a very neat form.As a demonstration,the Luenberger function observer design of descriptor linear system is considered and a parametric design procedure is established.Finally,a numerical example shows the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:In this paper, several Kaczmarz-type numerical methods for solving the matrix equation $AX=B$ and $XA=C$ are proposed, where the coefficient matrix $A$ may be full rank or rank deficient. These methods are iterative methods without matrix multiplication. Theoretically, the convergence of these methods is proved. The numerical results show that these methods are more efficient than iterative methods involving matrix multiplication for high-dimensional matrices.
