Abstract:The necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence and the explicit expression for the general solution are obtained for the quadratic matrix equation X * A X + B * X + D = 0 , where A ∈ C n × n , B ∈ C n × p and D ∈ C p × p are given complex matrices with D * = D and A * = A , and ( · ) * denotes the conjugate transpose of a complex matrix. Abstract:In this paper, the generalized anti-reflexive solution for matrix equations (B X = C, X D = E), which arise in left and right inverse eigenpairs problem, is considered.With the special properties of generalized anti-reflexive matrices, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability and a general expression of the solution are obtained.Furthermore, the related optimal approximation problem to a given matrix over the solution set is solved.In addition, the algorithm and the example to obtain the unique optimal approximation solution are given.

Abstract:In this paper, the solvability conditions for the matrix equation A X B = D and a pair of matrix equations A X = C , X B = D with the constraint X * X = I p are deduced by applying the spectral and singular value decompositions of matrices, and the expressions of the general solutions to these matrix equations are also provided. Furthermore, the associated optimal approximate problems to the given matrices are discussed and the optimal approximate solutions are derived. Finally, two numerical experiments are given to validate the accuracy of the results.

Abstract:A quadratically convergent algorithm (QCA) for solving the extreme solutions of the matrix equation AX2+BX+C=0 was proposed by Bini and Meini. In this paper, we present a new derivation for this algorithm and a new proof for the convergence theory by using a structure-preserving transformation of a matrix pencil. Since only the knowledge of the elementary matrix theory is used, the derivation and the proof are very concise and pellucid.

Abstract:Dual generalized commutative quaternions have broad application prospects in many fields. Additionally, the matrix equation AXB=C has important applications in mathematics and engineering, especially in control systems, economics, computer science, and other disciplines. However, research on the matrix equation AXB=C over the dual generalized commutative quaternions remains relatively insufficient. In this paper, we derive the necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of the dual generalized commutative quaternion matrix equation AXB=C. Furthermore, we provide the general solution expression for this matrix equation, when it is solvable. Finally, a numerical algorithm and an example are provided to confirm the reliability of the main conclusions.

Abstract:This paper studies the solvability, existence of unique solution, closed-form solution and numerical solution of matrix equation X=AfXB+C with fX=XT, fX=X¯ and fX=XH, where X is the unknown. It is proven that the solvability of these equations is equivalent to the solvability of some auxiliary standard Stein equations in the form of W=AWB+C where the dimensions of the coefficient matrices A,B and C are the same as those of the original equation. Closed-form solutions of equation X=AfXB+C can then be obtained by utilizing standard results on the standard Stein equation. On the other hand, some generalized Stein iterations and accelerated Stein iterations are proposed to obtain numerical solutions of equation X=AfXB+C. Necessary and sufficient conditions are established to guarantee the convergence of the iterations.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the necessary and sufficient conditions for solving a dual split quaternion matrix equation AXB = C, and present the general solution expression when the solvability conditions are met. As an application, we delve into the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a Hermitian solution to this equation by using a newly defined real representation method. Furthermore, we obtain the solutions for the dual split quaternion matrix equations AX = C and XB = C. Finally, we provide a numerical example to demonstrate the findings of this paper.

Abstract:This study studies the matrix equation AX - XB = C, which has many important applications in control theory, by using spectral decompositions of A and B. By establishing solvability conditions and solutions to the standard vector equation Ax = c, and the spectral decompositions of the associated nivellateur of the matrix equation, necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of the matrix equation are provided in terms of the coefficients of the spectral decompositions of A and B. Moreover, explicit solutions are provided, which are also based on the coefficients of the spectral decompositions of A and B. The obtained results include the existing ones as special cases, and, moreover, correct some errors in the existing methods. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated by some illustrative examples.

Abstract:It is shown in this paper that three types of matrix equations AX−XF=BY,AX−EXF=BY and AXI−EXF=BY which have wide applications in control systems theory, are equivalent to the matrix equation AXℱ−X=ℬY with their coefficient matrices satisfying some relations. Based on right coprime factorization to (sA−I)−1ℬ, explicit solutions to the equation AXℱ−X=ℬY are proposed and thus explicit solutions to the former three types of matrix equations can be immediately established. With the special structure of the proposed solutions, necessary conditions to the nonsingularity of matrix X are also obtained. The proposed solutions give an ultimate and unified formula for the explicit solutions to these four types of linear matrix equations.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the nonlinear matrix equation X-AHX<overbar></mml:mover>-1A=Q, where A,Q is an element of Cnxn, Q is a Hermitian positive definite matrix and X is an element of Cn<mml:mo>xn is an unknown matrix. We prove that the equation always has a unique Hermitian positive definite solution. We present two structure-preserving-doubling like algorithms to find the Hermitian positive definite solution of the equation, and the convergence theories are established. Finally, we show the effectiveness of the algorithms by numerical experiments.

Abstract:The matrix equation EX̅F - AX = C is investigated in this study, and three approaches are provided to solve this equation. The first approach is to transform it into a real matrix equation with the help of real representation of complex matrices. In the second approach, the solution is given in terms of characteristic polynomial of a constructed matrix pair. In the third approach, the solution can be neatly expressed in terms of controllability matrices and observability matrices. By specialising the obtained solutions of EX̅F - AX = C, some new expressions of the generalised Sylvester matrix equations are also provided.

Abstract:The matrix equations AX = B , XC = D with the constraint PX = sXP are considered, where P is a given Hermitian matrix satisfying P 2 = I and s = ± 1 . Using an eigenvalue decomposition of P , the constrained problem can be equivalently transformed to two independent (unconstrained) problems of matrix equations in similar forms, and hence the constrained problem can be solved in terms of the eigenvectors of P . In this paper, a simple and eigenvector-free formula of the general solutions to the constrained problem is presented using Moore–Penrose generalized inverses of the coefficient matrices A and C . A similar problem of the matrix equations with generalized constraint is discussed, too. We also consider the least-norm solution of the constrained problems.
