Abstract:[Objective] To measure the levels of a panel of cytokines [interleukin-6(IL-6), IL-17A, IL-17F, IL-21, IL-23] in plasma and the expression of cytochrome P450 1A1(CYP1A1) gene in peripheral leukocytes of residents living around an waste incinerator. [Methods] This present study recruited 42 male residents from a community within 10 km downwind from the waste incinerator(exposure group) and 44 male residents from a community beyond 10 km from the waste incinerator and without known industrial pollution sources(control group). CYP1A1 gene expressions in participants' leukocytes were determined with semi-quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction, and plasma cytokine(IL-6, IL-17A, IL-17F, IL-21, IL-23) levels were measured by Bio-PlexTM Cytokine Panel. [Results] The relative CYP1A1 gene expression levels in the exposure group were significantly higher than those in the control group(P 0.05). Also, the plasma levels of IL-17F, IL-21, and IL-23 in the exposure group were significantly higher(P 0.05). After adjusting for age, body mass index, smoking, and alcohol consumption, the transformed levels of IL-17F and IL-23 were associated with exposure(P 0.05) in the multi linear regression analyses. [Conclusion] The mRNA expressions of CYP1A1 and the plasma levels of IL-17F and IL-23 in residents living in the vicinity of the waste incinerator are remarkably higher than those of the residents living further away from the waste incinerator.
