Abstract:Abstract Here I speak in favor of the view that life's meaning can be found in the pursuit of pleasure. I first present an argument for this view that is grounded in a traditional concept of meaning. To help ease remaining concerns about accepting it, I then draw attention to four things the view does not imply: (1) that we have a reason to take hedonistic theories of meaning seriously; (2) that meaning can be found in the deeply immoral, the deeply ignorant, or the deeply repulsive pursuit of pleasure; (3) that there is a significantly easier route to meaning than the pursuit of morality, the pursuit of knowledge, or the pursuit of art; and (4) that meaning can be found in pursuits that involve only baser aspects of human nature.

Abstract:When trying to envision a happy day, or a happy life, what images come to mind? For some people, it might be sharing a meal with good friends and family members while laughing together, telling stories, and feeling loved. For others, happiness may come from accomplishing an important goal and basking in the glory of a job well done. And for others still, happiness may be the byproduct of doing good deeds, helping others, and believing that the world is a better place because of it. Although people may vary a good deal in what they think will make them happy, an overwhelming majority of U.S. residents place ‘‘finding happiness’’ very high on their list of major life goals (Diener, Suh, Smith, & Shao, 1995). How exactly do you ‘‘find happiness?’’ This question has been posed for thousands of years, and although many self-help books have attempted to offer answers, their authors have often based their conclusions, however well meaning, on their own personal, idiosyncratic experiences. Only recently has scientific evidence emerged to suggest a possible path to lasting happiness that is effective for the majority of people. By scientific, we mean that researchers have conducted rigorous experiments to determine whether particular strategies for increasing happiness actually work. The present chapter reviews this evidence and provides practical suggestions that you can use to create long-term, or sustainable, changes in your level of well-being.

Abstract:The pursuit of happiness is an important goal for many people. However, surprisingly little scientific research has focused on the question of how happiness can be increased and then sustained, probably because of pessimism engendered by the concepts of genetic determinism and hedonic adaptation. Nevertheless, emerging sources of optimism exist regarding the possibility of permanent increases in happiness. Drawing on the past well-being literature, the authors propose that a person's chronic happiness level is governed by 3 major factors: a genetically determined set point for happiness, happiness-relevant circumstantial factors, and happiness-relevant activities and practices. The authors then consider adaptation and dynamic processes to show why the activity category offers the best opportunities for sustainably increasing happiness. Finally, existing research is discussed in support of the model, including 2 preliminary happiness-increasing interventions.

Abstract:This article explores the philosophical and spiritual perspectives of Abu Hamid al-Ghazali, focusing on his views on the nature of humanity, the spiritual and material aspects of existence, and the pursuit of happiness. Al-Ghazali's philosophy is deeply rooted in Islamic thought and draws upon the Quranic and Prophetic teachings. Al-Ghazali posits that humans are composed of both a physical, ephemeral dimension (the material aspect) and an intellectual-transcendental dimension (the spiritual aspect). The article delves into al-Ghazali's classification of existence into two realms: the realm of decrees ('ālam al-amr) and the realm of creation ('ālam al-khalq). Human beings, according to al-Ghazali, embody both of these realms, with their physicality falling under the realm of creation and their spirituality under the realm of decree. Al-Ghazali introduces various terms to describe the spiritual entity within humans, such as al-‘aql (intellect), al-nafs (soul), al-qalb (heart), and al-rūh (spirit). He argues that while the body is material and earthly, the spirit is divine in origin and immortal. The soul, as God's creation, reflects this governance by ruling over the body without being located in any specific physical part. It emphasizes that the spirit belongs to the realm of Divine decrees, making it distinct from material entities. Al-Ghazali identifies different qualities within the human spirit, ranging from animalistic to angelic. He argues that the angelic quality, associated with the worship of God and the pursuit of Divine Beauty, represents the true essence of humanity. To attain happiness, individuals must purify themselves from worldly desires and base instincts. The article underscores the importance of knowledge in al-Ghazali's philosophy, with knowledge being derived from God and serving as the criterion that separates humans from other creations. Knowledge enables individuals to understand their purpose, responsibilities, and the path to happiness. The article explores al-Ghazali's perspective on happiness, highlighting his belief that it is primarily a spiritual and intellectual state. It emphasizes the significance of attaining knowledge of God for true happiness, as well as the importance of spiritual discipline and self-purification.

Abstract:The paper starts with a presentation of the pure happiness theory, i.e. the idea that the quality of a person’s life is dependent on one thing only, viz. how happy that person is. To find out whether this type of theory is plausible or not, I examine the standard arguments for and against this theory, including Nozick’s experience machine argument. I then investigate how the theory can be modified in order to avoid the most serious objections. I first examine different types of epistemic modifications of the theory (e.g. the idea that a person’s happiness is more valuable for her if it is based on a correct perception of her own life), and then turn to a number of modifications which all make the value of a person’s happiness depend on whether the evaluative standard on which her happiness is based satisfies certain requirements. In connection with this, I present and defend my own modified version of the happiness theory.

Abstract:Using an experiment, this study examines how happiness towards, and evaluation of, experiential and material purchases are affected by mindset and comparison alternatives. When primed with a mental subtraction mindset, people became happier with their material purchases and evaluated such purchases more positively; however, those who had acquired experiences did not report significant increases in happiness or purchase evaluations. In contrast, when people did not engage in mental subtraction, recollection of purchase details did not enhance associated happiness for both material and experiential purchases. We also found that, relative to experiences, material purchases induced greater increases in happiness in the presence of inferior alternatives. When comparing purchases with superior alternatives, happiness declined significantly regardless of the type of purchase. Further, such decrements in happiness were more dramatic for material purchases than experiences. Collectively, this research suggests that happiness with material goods can increase over time with the appropriate mental strategies (i.e., mental subtraction and comparison against inferior alternatives).

Abstract:The goal of human life is to purse happiness and no one would like to experience the pain.Many stimuli that afftcts happiness include food,marriage,friendship and companion,money and wealth and other factors.Both pursuing happiness and avoiding distresss can staisfy the need of happiness.Why do such simple things as eating our favorite foods when hungry,drinking cold water when hot and thirsty,bonding with our kin,having sex with our loved ones,being recognized by others,and achieving our goals after hard work make us happy? Why does failing to do any of these things make us distressed or unhappy? These experiences make us happy because,directly or indirectly,they have been linked to,and not having them has presented obstacles to,survival and reproductive success in our evolutionary past.The positive emotions collectively known as happiness are in turn selected by nature to motivate us to continue to pursue these fitness enhancing activities.So has the desire to seek happiness been selected to motivate living.An evolutionary psychological explanation of happiness focuses on the functions of the concerning experiences which are ultimately related to reproductive success including survival to reach reproductive success.

Abstract:This Paper examines how the protagonist, Chris Gardner, an African American, in Gabriele Muccino's film the Pursuit of Happyness grapples with underlying identity crisis in first decade of 21st century while pursuing his happiness. The film nowhere claims that the color of skin is an operative social component that is detrimental to pursuit of dream, the American Dream. However, the amnesiac picture of racial history is undercut by the choice of protagonist, Chris Gardner, an African American makes and grapples to accomplish it. In the light of this situation, the paper tries to tests one of the important notions of critical race theory, double consciousness, a putatively collective African American socio-historical conditions as characterized and postulated by Du Bois, and explore the dilemma inherent in Chris Gardner's pursuit of happiness. More significantly, the paper analyzes the liminal space the protagonist lives, experiences, undergoes and wrestles, and tries to come out of it if possible. Pointedly, it traces the protagonist's spiritual striving to the past, and explores the material need of the present. The paper concludes that how his dream has been subject to racialized ascription, and how and what the dream means for Chris Gardner. The paper clearly demonstrates the philosophical shift— the spiritual striving to the material quest in Gardner's pursuit of the dream.

Abstract:AbstractThis study makes a novel attempt to disentangle the complex relationships between making sustainable purchasing choices and happiness, while also considering the key issues of social desirability and consumer alienation. Analysis of data collected via a survey administered to a representative sample (n = 835) of Japanese consumers suggests that making sustainable purchases does indeed have a positive impact on life satisfaction, or happiness. At the same time, high levels of need for social approval also positively impacts sustainable consumption and happiness. Feeling alienated from the marketplace, however, has a detrimental impact on happiness. These results suggest a more complex picture than is usually portrayed in studies of ethical consumption and life satisfaction, extend our understanding of an intricate set of relationships, and provide insight for policy makers and managers into the ways in which happiness can be encouraged via making sustainable consumption choices and having a more positive perception of business and social norms.

Abstract:The rational pursuit of happiness requires knowledge of happiness and in particular answers to the following four questions: (1) Is greater happiness realistically possible? (2) If so, to what extent is that in our own hands? (3) How can we get happier? What things should be considered in the choices we make? (4) How does the pursuit of happiness fit with other things we value? Answers to these questions are not only sought by individuals who want to improve their personal life, they are also on the mind of managers concerned about the happiness of members of their organization and of governments aiming to promote greater happiness of a greater number of citizens. All these actors might make more informed choices if they could draw on a sound base of evidence. In this paper I take stock of the available evidence and the answers it holds for the four types of questions asked by the three kinds of actors. To do this, I use a large collection of research findings on happiness gathered in the World Database of Happiness, which serves as an online supplement to this paper. The data provide good answers to the questions 1 and 2, but fall short on the questions 3 and 4. Priorities for further research are indicated.
