Abstract:Fluorine-incorporated hydrogenated fullerene-like nanostructure amorphous carbon films (F-FLC) were synthesized by employing the direct current plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (dc-PECVD) technique using a mixture of methane (CH4), tetra-fluoromethane (CF4), and hydrogen (H-2) as the working gases. The effect of the fluorine content on the bonding structure, surface roughness, hydrophobic, mechanical, and tribological properties of the films was systematically investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman analysis, atomic force microscope (AFM), contact angle goniometer, nano-indenter, and reciprocating ball-on-disc tester, respectively. The fluorine content in the films increased from 0 to 2.1 at.% as the CF4 gas flow ratio increased from 0 to 3 sccm, and incorporated fluorine atoms existed in the form of C-FX (X = 1, 2, 3) bonds in the film. The fullerene nanostructure embedded in the hydrogenated amorphous carbon films was confirmed by Raman analysis. The water contact angle was significantly increased because of fluorine doping, which indicates that the hydrophobicity of the carbon films could be adjusted to some extent by the fluorine doping. The hardness and elastic modulus of the films remained relatively high (22 GPa) as the fluorine content increased. Furthermore, the friction coefficient of the carbon films was significantly reduced and the wear resistance was enhanced by fluorine doping.
Fluidization of Cohesive Fluorite Particles at Ambient/High Temperatures and Enhancement Methods

Abstract:Fluidization of fine fluorite particles, classified as Geldart A/C particles, was studied at ambient/high temperatures by experiments. Results showed that fine fluorite particles could not be fully fluidized at ambient temperatures, due to the agglomeration phenomenon. What’s worse, due to the great increase of van der Waals forces with the increasing temperature, the fluidization quality was further depressed and they were totally defluidized at 723 K unless the loose gases were used during the heating process. In order to improve the fluidization quality, an enhancement method of adding cohesive calcium sulfate particles was established. The best improvements at ambient/high temperatures both appeared when the addition fraction was 20 wt %. Moreover, theoretical analysis showed that the effect mechanism of a calcium sulfate particle was the “coordination” theory. According to the “coordination” theory, the optimum addition fraction of calcium sulfate particles was calculated as 16.5 wt %–22.4 wt %, which agreed well with the experimental results.

Abstract:Dual-metal nanoparticles were simultaneously embedded into amorphous carbon (a-C) matrix at room temperature. As-deposited Au/a-C/Fe sandwich composite multilayer films were fabricated by alternating multitarget pulsed laser deposition. More sp(2) carbon content, narrower Tauc optical gap and stronger photoluminescence intensity of the amorphous carbon films were observed after metal-embedding. Especially for Au/a-C/Fe sandwich films, the fullerene-like microstructure demonstrated that the dual-metal embedding modulated greatly the intrinsic structure and properties of the a-C films. These results were attributed primarily to the extended state around the metal deep level in the band gap and the narrowing of the pi and pi* band edge states. The metal deep level defects contributed chiefly to non-radiative recombination. (C) 2013 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition was employed to fabricate hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) films and fluorine-doped hydrogenated amorphous (a-C:H:F) carbon films. For comparison purpose, the a-C:H films were treated with CF4 plasma. (3), C-F and C-F-2 groups in both the a-C:H:F film and the surface CF4 plasma processed hydrogenated amorphous carbon (F-P-a-C:H) films. Abstract:Hydrogenated carbon films containing fullerene-like structures (FL-C:H) were synthesized using magnetron sputtering of a graphite target in methane and argon atmospheres. The results indicate clearly that a substantial part of the film is made up of fragments of such fullerene-like structures mixed in a hydrogenated amorphous carbon matrix. The film exhibits excellent mechanical properties with a hardness of 27.4 GPa and almost complete elastic recovery (as high as 95%). The tribological properties of the FL-C:H film were tested and compared with a-C:H and a-C films. The results show that the lowest friction coefficient of the FL-C:H film, about 0.02, is recorded in oxygen environment. The ranges of dispersion of the friction coefficient for the FL-C:H film are merely 0.02 in different testing environments, much lower than that of a-C:H and a-C films, which indicates the friction-coefficient-insensitivity of the FL-C:H film to different atmospheres.

Abstract:In this study, the wettability of amorphous carbon films was tuned by controlling the degree of plasma fluorination, and the degree of fluorination on the surface was characterized by varying the process variables in inductively coupled CF 4 plasmas. Surface wettability was characterized in terms of the contact angle, whereas the degree of surface fluorination was estimated by measuring the F/C atomic ratio using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The relationship between the contact angle and F/C atomic ratio was investigated. The contact angle decreased from 59° to 20° as the F/C atomic ratio increased from 0 to 0.1 with a low degree of fluorination. The contact angle subsequently increased to 114° as the F/C atomic ratio increased to 0.46 with increased surface fluorination. The hydrophilicity, represented by a low contact angle, can be attributed to the large fraction of polar CF bonds on the surface at low fluorination, whereas the hydrophobicity, represented by a high contact angle, can be attributed to the CF 2 bonds on the surface at high fluorination. The effect of ions on surface fluorination was investigated in CF 4 plasma. The surface fluorine fraction increased from 0.026 to 0.31 as the ion density increased from 2.6 × 10 9 to 1.3 × 10 10 cm -3 , while it increased from 0.026 to 0.30 with an increase in ion energy from 15 to 140.5 eV. The degree of surface fluorination was modeled in terms of the adsorption and desorption rates of fluorine atoms with different radical densities, ion densities, and ion energies. Ion bombardment can increase fluorine adsorption by creating active sites on the surface. The average number of active sites for F radical adsorption per ion bombardment was estimated from the surface fluorination model. The modeled surface fluorine fraction demonstrated favorable agreement with our experimental results for CF 4 plasma fluorination at various ion densities and energies. This model indicates that the contribution of ions to the fluorination of the amorphous carbon surface is considerably larger than that of the F radicals.

Abstract:The fullerene-like (FL) nanostructure is extremely important for fullerene-like hydrogenated carbon (FLC:H) films that exhibit excellent mechanical properties and ultralow friction in ambient air, but the details of the contributing nanostructures are not well understood. We have prepared FL-C:H films with different morphologies and contents of FL nanostructures through tailoring the pulse bias duty cycle, and have investigated the contribution of the FL nanostructures. It is found that the straighter graphitic nanostructures in FL-C:H films could form under a high pulse bias duty cycle, and the low pulse bias duty cycle could increase the five-membered ring fractions, which results in more curved FL nanostructures with a larger curvature radius. Further investigation proved that the FL nanostructures with the more curved morphology could increase the mechanical properties and improve the tribological performance of the FL-C:H films. This work established a convenient controlling method to prepare FL-C:H films with tailored structures and performance.

Abstract:By applying a negative high pulsed voltage to Si (111) substrates, ultra-thin fluorine carbon films of about 3 nm thick are deposited and completely covered on the samples by RF magnetron sputtering with PTFE target. Angle resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis indicates that the surface of the deposited films is rich in fluorine, and C–F2, CF–CF and C–F groups in the outmost surface layer are much more than those in the inner layer of the films. The reason for this forming fluorine-rich phenomenon is explained and a two-layer model is proposed.

Abstract:Fullerene-like hydrogenated carbon (FL-C:H) films hold superlubricity properties at room condition, which important for saving energy, for engine use, however, high temperature serving (below 500 degrees C) are needed considering. In this paper, FL-C:H films were annealed with protecting of nitrogen. The tribological test show that all films have superlubricity properties, of which friction coefficient are 0.008 (200 degrees C), 0.005 (250 degrees C), 0.004 (300 degrees C), 0.005 (400 degrees C), 0.004 (500 degrees C), respectively. In addition, the hardness is incremental when the annealed temperature increased from 200 to 300 degrees C, and decremental from 300 degrees C to 500 degrees C. Interestingly, the changes of hydrogen content can be neglect in present work. Combined HRTEM, Raman spectra and XPS results, one can speculate that the degree of order for FL-C:H films increase along with the argument of annealed temperature, but competition of growth and ordering of short-chain hydrocarbon and graphene stacks that determine the hardness and H-3/E-2 ratio, which further influences the wear volumes. However, the friction coefficient only depends on curved grahene which can formation scroll graphene between contact surface to low friction force.

Abstract:Hydrogenated carbon film (a-C:H film) with fullerene-like nanostructure has been prepared successfully by magnetron sputtering technology. Here, we investigated the film morphology, mechanical properties as well as tribological behavior in high vacuum environment. The results show that the fabricated fullerene-like hydrogenated carbon (FL-C:H) film exhibits high hardness and elasticity. Importantly, the wear life of FL-C:H film is markedly prolonged to more than 36000 cycles under a high applied load of 5 N in high vacuum environment. The outstanding tribological performance in vacuum environment can be attributed to the presence of unique fullerene-like nanostructure and friction-induced promotion of onion-like nanostructure during friction process. Abstract:Hydrogenated amorphous carbon films containing fullerene-like structures were obtained by magnetron sputtering of a titanium target in methane and argon atmosphere. The microstructure of the film was investigated by transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectra. Additionally, the three stage model proposed by Ferrari and Robertson was used to explain the formation process of fullerene-like structures. The results show that titanium target was covered by a hydrocarbon layer, and the new-produced hydrocarbon layer on titanium target rather than the titanium surface was sputtered during deposition. The product of the sputtering can serve as ‘seeds’ for the formation of fullerene-like structures. These ‘seeds’ or nuclei are proposed to be open graphene structures, at the effect of ions bombardment, more defects are introduced and the curved structure arises due to incorporation of odd member rings into the graphene sheets, which resulted in the formation of curved planes with small radii of curvature and closed fullerene-like structure.

Abstract:Fluorinated amorphous carbon films (a-C:H:F) were deposited by plasma source ion implantation (PSII) with precursor gas of CH2FCF3 + C2H2 + H2 with various radio frequency (r.f.) power. Structures and properties evolution varied with r.f. power was discussed in detail. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectrum, X-Ray reflection(XRR), atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to analyze composition, chemical state, sp2 cluster structure, density and surface morphology of prepared films. Nano-indentation test was used to get hardness and modulus. The results show that with the increase of r.f. power, the size and amount of sp2 cluster increase, so does the surface roughness; however, the density and the hardness of films decrease.

Abstract:Fluorine‐doped hydrogenated carbon film was grown by chemical vapor deposition technique using CH 4 and CF 4 as feedstock, with a pulse DC‐bias power supply. The structure of as‐deposited film was characterized by transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectra. The results suggested that the film could be considered as composite thin film with curved graphitic structures embedded in amorphous carbon matrix. The mechanical properties and friction coefficient were tested by TI 950 TriboIndenter and UMT‐2 at humidity of 30%, respectively. The results showed that the film exhibited high hardness (~11.04 GPa), good elasticity recovery(~83%) and ultra‐low coefficient of friction (~0.01). Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Driven by the advent of fullerenes, carbon nanotubes and graphene, designing or tailoring sp2-rich carbon clusters in carbon based films attains very interesting properties which can be ideal in various applications. Depositing sp2-rich clusters evolve toward a three-dimensional arrangement (composed of extended, bent, and cross-linked graphite basal planes, i.e. fullerene-like carbon (FLC)) or nanocrystalline planar graphitic configurations with the promotion in size and ordering of six-membered ring clusters (i.e. graphite-like carbon (GLC)). However, the films are studied separately and their structure effects on sliding-induced structure changes has never enjoyed elaboration. Here we built the self-mated friction groups of single structural films coated at two sliding surfaces, and designed a smart device to gather the transformed products under different load and sliding cycles. Super-low friction was realized under higher load by low-shear strength from graphene formed at the GLC interface (0.005), or reduced contact area from spherical nanoparticles with outer graphite shells produced at the FLC interface (0.009), resulting by different rehybridization pathways from different film structures. The role of film and rehybridized structures under super-low friction contact was discussed. The results could enrich the understanding of friction-induced rehybridization mechanism and help to deposit suitable films to significantly reduce friction.
Microstructure, Mechanical Properties and Wetting Behavior of F: Si–C–N Films As Bio-Mechanical Coating Grown by DC Unbalanced Magnetron Sputtering

Abstract:A systematic structure and properties investigation on the deposition of fluorinated silicon-carbon-nitride (Si-C-N) films under varying CF4 flows was carried out by direct current unbalanced magnetron sputtering techniques. Significant role of fluorine and carbon-doped on growth characteristics and mechanical properties in the film was observed. The chemical bonding configurations, surface topography and mechanical properties were characterized by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman and infrared spectroscopies, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and nano-indentation technique and CSM pin-on-disk tribometer. It was found that the as-deposited F: Si-C-N films are amphipathic nature, and large variations took place these films' deposition rate, composition, microstructure and mechanical properties when CF4 flows varied from 0 to 9 sccm. At CF4 gas flow rate 9 sccm, the F: Si-C-N coatings demonstrated a fluorine content of 5.95 at.% and a moderate friction coefficient of 0.03. It is obvious from the hardness results that the F: Si-C-N coating enhances the hardness of the Co-Cr-Mo alloy to approximately 16.3 GPa on a smoother surface. The tribological characterization of Co-Cr-Mo alloy with F: Si-C-N coating sliding against ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) counter-surface in fetal bovine serum, shows that the wear resistance of the F: Si-C-N coated Co-Cr-Mo alloy/UHMWPE sliding pair show much obviously improvement over that of uncoated Co-Cr-Mo alloy/UHMWPE sliding pair. Abstract:Large-area continuous α phase thin films of monodisperse poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO), with 32 or 64 fluorene repeating units, named as F32 or F64, respectively, are prepared by melt crystallization. A spherulite-like structure, composing of crystalline nanofibrils, is formed via radial growth after sufficient isothermal treatment. In these nanofibrils, the polymer chains remain extended conformation, which is demonstrated by the similarity between nanofibril widths and extended chain lengths. Comparing this discovery on F32/F64 with our previous observations on F16 (monodisperse PFO consisting of 16 repeating units) leads us conclude that the melt-crystallized phases change from β′ phase (F16) to α phase (F32 and F64) as the molecular weight increases. It is speculated that as the number of repeating unit goes up, the backbone planarity of PFO decreases, leading to the formation of different melt-crystallized phases at different molecular weights.

Abstract:Fullerene-like hydrogenated carbon (FL-C:H) films that exhibit ultra-low friction and wear in humid conditions have been the subject of extensive researches, but the structure–performance relationship such as the evolution of FL structures under friction is not well understood. We have prepared FL-C:H films with different FL content, and have addressed a detailed investigation on the relationship. It is found that with the increase in FL content, the friction and wear of FL-C:H films can reach as low as 0.011 and 1.48×10−8mm3/Nm, respectively. Examination of the corresponding wear tracks by Raman spectroscopy reveals that not graphitization but friction-induced promotion of FL structures causes the ultra-low friction and wear of FL-C:H films. We therefore claim that FL structures are in close positive relations with the excellent tribological performance of FL-C:H films.
The Ftir Studies on the Structural and Electrical Properties of Sno2:F Films As A Function of Hydrofluoric Acid Concentration

Abstract:The fluorine doped tin oxide films were prepared using hydrofluoric acid as the fluorine precursor. The effect of hydrofluoric acid concentration on the film orientation, morphology and electrical parameters were discussed. The FTIR indicates that the fluorine ions prefer to substitute the oxygen ions in the group of O-Sn-O. While beyond a certain doping level, fluorine ions start to occupy interstitial sites, which has a negative effect on carrier concentration. The FTIR also shows the increase of the disorder of SnO2 films with increasing fluorine doping. The main scattering centers of carriers are the impurity ions.

Abstract:Fluorocarbon resin was widely used in the hydrophobic coating. The antifouling flashover coatings were prepared with FEVE fluorocarbons resin as film forming material, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) microparticles and modified TiO 2 nanoparticles as fillers, and perfluorosilane as coupling agent. The experiment results showed a surface enrichment phenomenon of fluorine atoms in the samples, the surface F atoms relative content were 9.42%, 11.73%, 13.08% respectively in three samples, which the filler with single PTFE, unmodified TiO 2 and PTFE, modified TiO 2 and PTFE. Meanwhile, after different outdoor exposure times, the surface enrichment of fluorine atoms existed also, the test results showed the surface F atoms relative content were 12.26%, 13.16%, 18.27% respectively, which with initial sample, 1.5a and 3a outdoor exposure samples. Its mechanism maybe the long side chain perfluoroalkyl group moves to the surface of the coating without being affected by the main chain, thus fluorine atoms are enriched on the surface of the coating.
