Abstract:For any twisted ideal polygon in $\mathbb{H}^3$, we construct a harmonic map from $\mathbb{C}$ to $\mathbb{H}^3$ with a polynomial Hopf differential, that is asymptotic to the given polygon, and is a bounded distance from a pleated plane. Our proof uses the harmonic map heat flow. We also show that such a harmonic map is unique once we prescribe the principal part of its Hopf differential.

Abstract:In this paper, we generalize the Bochner-Kodaira formulas to the case of Hermitian complex (possibly non-holomorphic) vector bundles over compact Hermitian (possibly non-Kähler) manifolds. As applications, we get the complex analyticity of harmonic maps between compact Hermitian manifolds.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of various harmonic maps from Hermitian manifolds to Kaehler, Hermitian and Riemannian manifolds respectively. By using refined Bochner formulas on Hermitian (possibly non-Kaehler) manifolds, we derive new rigidity results on Hermitian harmonic maps from compact Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds, and we also obtain the complex analyticity of pluri-harmonic maps from compact complex manifolds to compact Kaehler manifolds (and Riemannian manifolds) with non-degenerate curvatures, which are analogous to several fundamental results in [28,Siu], [14,Jost-Yau] and [26, Sampson].

Abstract:By simplifying the first and the second variation formulas of the energy functional and generalizing the Weitzenbock formula, we study the stability and the rigidity of harmonic maps between Finsler manifolds. It is proved that any nondegenerate harmonic map from a compact Einstein Riemannian manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature to a Berwald manifold with nonpositive flag curvature is totally geodesic and there is no nondegenerate stable harmonic map from a Riemannian unit sphere S-n (n > 2) to any Finsler manifold.

Abstract:We relate the existence problem of harmonic maps into $S^2$ to the convex geometry of $S^2$. On one hand, this allows us to construct new examples of harmonic maps of degree 0 from compact surfaces of arbitrary genus into $S^2$. On the other hand, we produce new example of regions that do not contain closed geodesics (that is, harmonic maps from $S^1$) but do contain images of harmonic maps from other domains. These regions can therefore not support a strictly convex function. Our construction builds upon an example of W. Kendall, and uses M. Struwe's heat flow approach for the existence of harmonic maps from surfaces.

Abstract:An important result in the theory of harmonic maps is due to Benoist--Hulin: given a quasi-isometry $f:X\to Y$ between pinched Hadamard manifolds, there exists a unique harmonic map at a finite distance from $f$. Here we show existence of harmonic maps under a weaker condition on $f$, that we call non-collapsing -- we require that the following two conditions hold uniformly in $x\in X$: (1) average distance from $f(x)$ to $f(y)$ for $y$ on the sphere of radius $R$ centered at $x$ grows linearly with $R$ (2) the pre-image under $f$ of small cones with apex $f(x)$ have low harmonic measures on spheres centered at $x$. Using these ideas, we also continue the previous work of the author on existence of harmonic maps that are at a finite distance from projections to certain convex sets. We show this existence in a pinched negative curvature setting, when the convex set is large enough. For hyperbolic spaces, this includes the convex hulls of open sets in the sphere at infinity with sufficiently regular boundary.

Abstract:A classical result of Sampson and Schoen-Yau in 1978 states that every diffeomorphism between compact hyperbolic Riemann surfaces is homotopic to an harmonic diffeomorphism. As conjectured by Schoen in 1993 and partially proved by Wan in 1992 and Tam-Wan in 1995, we prove in this article that this theorem generalizes to the non compact case : every quasi symmetric homeomorphism of the circle extends to a quasi isometric harmonic diffeomorphism of the hyperbolic plane. This enables to parametrize the universal Teichmuller space by bounded holomorphic quadratric differentials of the hyperbolic plane.

Abstract:We prove that any (real or complex) analytic horizontally conformal submersion from a three‐dimensional conformal manifold (M3, cM) to a two‐dimensional conformal manifold (N2, cN) can be, locally, ‘extended’ to a unique harmonic morphism from the ℋ(eaven)‐space (H4, g) of (M3, cN) to (N2, cN). Moreover, any positive harmonic morphism with two‐dimensional fibres from (H4, g) is obtained in this way.

Abstract:We show that surfaces such that the natural projections of the unit normal bundles are harmonic morphisms are composed of minimal points and totally umbilical points. As its application, we find a harmonic map from the torus to the complex quadric in CP3 such that the projection map of the associated sphere bundle constructed by Gudmundsson is not a harmonic morphism. This contrasts sharply with the situation for holomorphic maps. We also establish sufficient conditions for reducing the codimension of an isometric immersion with conformal second fundamental form.

Abstract:In this paper we develop new methods for studying the convergence problem for the heat flow on negatively curved spaces and prove that any quasiconformal map of the sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$, $n\geq 3$, can be extended to the $n$-dimensional hyperbolic space such that the heat flow starting with this extension converges to a quasi-isometric harmonic map. This implies the Schoen-Li-Wang conjecture that every quasiconformal map of $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$, $n\geq 3$, can be extended to a harmonic quasi-isometry of the $n$-dimensional hyperbolic space.

Abstract:Let g : M → N be a quasiconformal harmonic diffeomorphism between noncompact Riemann surfaces M and N. In this paper we study the relation between the map g and the complex structures given on M and N. In the case when M and N are of finite analytic type we derive a precise estimate which relates the map g and the Teichmüller distance between complex structures given on M and N. As a corollary we derive a result that every two quasiconformally related finitely generated Kleinian groups are also related by a harmonic diffeomorphism. In addition, we study the question of whether every quasisymmetric selfmap of the unit circle has a quasiconformal harmonic extension to the unit disk. We give a partial answer to this problem. We show the existence of the harmonic quasiconformal extensions for a large class of quasisymmetric maps. In particular it is proved that all symmetric selfmaps of the unit circle have a unique quasiconformal harmonic extension to the unit disk.

Abstract:Let $\varphi\in C^0 \cap W^{1,2}(\Sigma, X)$ where $\Sigma$ is a compact Riemann surface, $X$ is a compact locally CAT(1) space, and $W^{1,2}(\Sigma,X)$ is defined as in Korevaar-Schoen. We use the technique of harmonic replacement to prove that either there exists a harmonic map $u:\Sigma \to X$ homotopic to $\varphi$ or there exists a conformal harmonic map $v:\mathbb S^2 \to X$. To complete the argument, we prove compactness for energy minimizers and a removable singularity theorem for conformal harmonic maps.

Abstract:In this paper we study the change of conformal structure induced by harmonic diffeomorphisms between Riemann surfaces. The main result of this paper is to answer the following question raised by R. Schoen (see [20]): Is it true that Riemann surfaces which are related by a surjective harmonic diffeomorphism are necessarily quasiconformally related? We show that there exists a pair of Riemann surfaces of infinite topological type, which are related by a surjective harmonic diffeomorphism but which are not quasiconformally related. Also we characterize when the above question has a positive answer in the case of Riemann surfaces of finite topological type.

Abstract:We study the basic question of characterizing which boundary homeomorphisms of the unit sphere can be extended to a Sobolev homeomorphism of the interior in 3D space. While the planar variants of this problem are well-understood, completely new and direct ways of constructing an extension are required in 3D. We prove, among other things, that a Sobolev homeomorphism φ : R 2 → onto R 2 in W loc 1 , p ( R 2 , R 2 ) for some p ∈ [ 1 , ∞ ) admits a homeomorphic extension h : R 3 → onto R 3 in W loc 1 , q ( R 3 , R 3 ) for 1 ⩽ q < 3 2 p . Such an extension result is nearly sharp, as the bound q = 3 2 p cannot be improved due to the Hölder embedding. The case q = 3 gains an additional interest as it also provides an L 1 -variant of the celebrated Beurling-Ahlfors quasiconformal extension result.

Abstract:We prove the following result. If $f$ is a harmonic quasiconformal mapping between two Jordan domains $D$ and $\Omega$ having $\mathscr{C}^1$ boundaries, then the function $f$ is globally Hölder continuous for every $\alpha<1$ but it is not Lipschitz in general. This extends and improves a classical theorem of S. Warschawski for conformal mappings.

Harmonic maps to the circle with higher dimensional singular set

Abstract:In a closed, oriented ambient manifold $(M^n,g)$ we consider the problem of finding $\mathbb{S}^1$-valued harmonic maps with prescribed singular set. We show that the boundary of any oriented $(n-1)$-submanifold can be realised as the singular set of an $\mathbb{S}^1$-valued map, which is classically harmonic away from the singularity and distributionally harmonic across. If the singular set $\Gamma$ is also embedded and $C^{1,1}$, we consider three variational relaxations of the same problem and show that the energy of minimisers converges, after renormalisation, to the volume $\mathcal{H}^{n-2}(\Gamma)$ plus a lower-order "renormalised energy" -- common to all relaxations -- describing an energetic interaction between different components of the singular set.

Abstract:It is known that there is no nonconstant bounded harmonic map from the Euclidean space R n to the hyperbolic space H m . This is a particular case of a result of S.-Y. Cheng. However, there are many polynomial growth harmonic maps from R 2 to H 2 by the results of Z. Han, L.-F. Tam, A. Treibergs and T. Wan. One of the purposes of this paper is to construct harmonic maps from R n to H m by prescribing boundary data at infinity. The boundary data is assumed to satisfy some symmetric properties. On the other hand, it was proved by Han-Tam-Treibergs-Wan that under some reasonable assumptions, the image of a harmonic diffeomorphism from R 2 into H 2 is an ideal polygon with n + 2 vertices on the geometric boundary of H 2 if and only if its Hopf differential is of the form odz 2 where o is a polynomial of degree n. It is unclear whether one can find explicit relation between the coefficients of o and the vertices of the image of the harmonic map. The second purpose of this paper is to investigate this problem. We will explicitly demonstrate some families of polynomial holomorphic quadratic differentials, such that the harmonic maps from R 2 into H 2 with Hopf differentials in the same family will have the same image. In proving this, we first study the asymptotic behaviors of harmonic maps from R 2 into H 2 with polynomial Hopf differentials odz 2 . The result may have independent interest.
