Abstract:By simplifying the first and the second variation formulas of the energy functional and generalizing the Weitzenbock formula, we study the stability and the rigidity of harmonic maps between Finsler manifolds. It is proved that any nondegenerate harmonic map from a compact Einstein Riemannian manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature to a Berwald manifold with nonpositive flag curvature is totally geodesic and there is no nondegenerate stable harmonic map from a Riemannian unit sphere S-n (n > 2) to any Finsler manifold.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of various harmonic maps from Hermitian manifolds to Kaehler, Hermitian and Riemannian manifolds respectively. By using refined Bochner formulas on Hermitian (possibly non-Kaehler) manifolds, we derive new rigidity results on Hermitian harmonic maps from compact Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds, and we also obtain the complex analyticity of pluri-harmonic maps from compact complex manifolds to compact Kaehler manifolds (and Riemannian manifolds) with non-degenerate curvatures, which are analogous to several fundamental results in [28,Siu], [14,Jost-Yau] and [26, Sampson].

Abstract:This paper is to study further some properties of harmonic maps between Finsler manifolds. Some rigidity theorems for harmonic maps between Finsler manifolds are given. By introducing the stress-energy tensor of maps between Finsler manifolds, some integral formulas are obtained. Moreover, it is proved that any conformal strongly harmonic map from an n(>2)-dimensional Finsler manifold to a Finsler manifold must be homothetic.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the Dirichlet problem at infinity of proper harmonic maps from noncompact complex hyperbolic space $\mathbf{CH^m}$ to a rank one symmetric space N of noncompact type with singular boundary data $f: \mathbf{S^{2m-1}}\longrightarrow \partial_\infty N$. Under some conditions on f, we show that the Dirichlet problem at infinity admits a harmonic map which assumes the boundary data f continuously.

Abstract:Let g : M → N be a quasiconformal harmonic diffeomorphism between noncompact Riemann surfaces M and N. In this paper we study the relation between the map g and the complex structures given on M and N. In the case when M and N are of finite analytic type we derive a precise estimate which relates the map g and the Teichmüller distance between complex structures given on M and N. As a corollary we derive a result that every two quasiconformally related finitely generated Kleinian groups are also related by a harmonic diffeomorphism. In addition, we study the question of whether every quasisymmetric selfmap of the unit circle has a quasiconformal harmonic extension to the unit disk. We give a partial answer to this problem. We show the existence of the harmonic quasiconformal extensions for a large class of quasisymmetric maps. In particular it is proved that all symmetric selfmaps of the unit circle have a unique quasiconformal harmonic extension to the unit disk.
On harmonic maps from the complex plane to hyperbolic 3-space

Abstract:For any twisted ideal polygon in $\mathbb{H}^3$, we construct a harmonic map from $\mathbb{C}$ to $\mathbb{H}^3$ with a polynomial Hopf differential, that is asymptotic to the given polygon, and is a bounded distance from a pleated plane. Our proof uses the harmonic map heat flow. We also show that such a harmonic map is unique once we prescribe the principal part of its Hopf differential.

However, there are many polynomial growth harmonic maps from ℝ2 to ℍ2 by the results of Z. Han, L.-F. Tam, A. Treibergs and T. Wan. One of the purposes of this paper is to construct harmonic maps from ℝn to ℍm by prescribing boundary data at infinity. The boundary data is assumed to satisfy some symmetric properties. On the other hand, it was proved by Han-Tam-Treibergs-Wan that under some reasonable assumptions, the image of a harmonic diffeomorphism from ℝ2 into ℍ2 is an ideal polygon with n + 2 vertices on the geometric boundary of ℍ2 if and only if its Hopf differential is of the form φdz2 where φ is a polynomial of degree n. It is unclear whether one can find explicit relation between the coefficients of φ and the vertices of the image of the harmonic map. The second purpose of this paper is to investigate this problem. We will explicitly demonstrate some families of polynomial holomorphic quadratic differentials, such that the harmonic maps from ℝ2 into ℍ2 with Hopf differentials in the same family will have the same image. In proving this, we first study the asymptotic behaviors of harmonic maps from ℝ2 into ℍ2 with polynomial Hopf differentials φdz2. The result may have independent interest.

Abstract:Let $\varphi\in C^0 \cap W^{1,2}(\Sigma, X)$ where $\Sigma$ is a compact Riemann surface, $X$ is a compact locally CAT(1) space, and $W^{1,2}(\Sigma,X)$ is defined as in Korevaar-Schoen. We use the technique of harmonic replacement to prove that either there exists a harmonic map $u:\Sigma \to X$ homotopic to $\varphi$ or there exists a conformal harmonic map $v:\mathbb S^2 \to X$. To complete the argument, we prove compactness for energy minimizers and a removable singularity theorem for conformal harmonic maps.

Abstract:In this paper, the asymptotic boundary behavior of a Hopf differential or the Beltrami coefficient of a harmonic map is investigated and certain compact properties of harmonic maps are established. It is shown that, if f is a quasiconformal harmonic diffeomorphism between two Riemann surfaces and is homotopic to an asymptotically conformal map modulo boundary, then f is asymptotically conformal itself. In addition, we prove that the harmonic embedding map from the Bers space B Q D ( X ) of an arbitrary hyperbolic Riemann surface X to the Teichmüller space T ( X ) induces an embedding map from the asymptotic Bers space A B Q D ( X ), a quotient space of B Q D ( X ), into the asymptotic Teichmüller space AT ( X ).
Harmonic maps from surfaces of arbitrary genus into spheres

Abstract:We relate the existence problem of harmonic maps into $S^2$ to the convex geometry of $S^2$. On one hand, this allows us to construct new examples of harmonic maps of degree 0 from compact surfaces of arbitrary genus into $S^2$. On the other hand, we produce new example of regions that do not contain closed geodesics (that is, harmonic maps from $S^1$) but do contain images of harmonic maps from other domains. These regions can therefore not support a strictly convex function. Our construction builds upon an example of W. Kendall, and uses M. Struwe's heat flow approach for the existence of harmonic maps from surfaces.

Abstract:We study locally harmonic maps between a Riemann surface or Lorentz surface $M$ and a Riemann surface or Lorentz surface $N$. {All four cases are studied in a unified way}. All four cases are written using a unified formalism. Therefore solutions to the harmonic map problem can be studied in a unified way. Harmonic maps between pseudo-Riemannian surfaces are classified by the classification of the solutions of a generalized sine-Gordon equation. We then study the one-soliton solutions of this equation and we find the corresponding harmonic maps in a unified way. Next, we discuss a Bäcklund transformation of the harmonic map equations that provides a connection between the solutions of two sine-Gordon type equations. Finally, we give an example of a harmonic map that is constructed by the use of a Bäcklund transformation.

Abstract:We study locally harmonic maps between a Riemann surface or a Lorentz surface M and a Riemann or Lorentz surface N . All four cases are written using a unified formalism. Therefore properties and solutions to the harmonic map problem can be studied in a unified way.It is known that harmonic maps between Riemannian surfaces are classified by the classification of the solutions of a sinh-Gordon equation. We extend this result to all the four cases of harmonic maps between Riemannian or pseudo-Riemannian surfaces. The calculation of the corresponding harmonic map can be calculated by the solutions of the corresponding Beltrami equations in all the cases.We study the one-soliton solutions of this equation and we find the corresponding harmonic maps in a unified way.Next, we discuss a Bäcklund transformation of the harmonic map equations that provides a connection between the solutions of two sine or sinh-Gordon type equations. Finally, we give an example of a harmonic map that is constructed by the use of a Bäcklund transformation.

Abstract:We prove the following result. If $f$ is a harmonic quasiconformal mapping between two Jordan domains $D$ and $\Omega$ having $\mathscr{C}^1$ boundaries, then the function $f$ is globally Hölder continuous for every $\alpha<1$ but it is not Lipschitz in general. This extends and improves a classical theorem of S. Warschawski for conformal mappings.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the associated family of harmonic maps $\mathcal{F}: M \rightarrow G/K$ from a Riemann surface $M$ into inner symmetric spaces of compact or non-compact type which are either algebraic or totally symmetric. These notions are the two components of the definition of a harmonic map of finite uniton number, as stated by [2]. We finish this paper by comparing these to notions and by stating a conjecture.
