Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of various harmonic maps from Hermitian manifolds to Kaehler, Hermitian and Riemannian manifolds respectively. By using refined Bochner formulas on Hermitian (possibly non-Kaehler) manifolds, we derive new rigidity results on Hermitian harmonic maps from compact Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds, and we also obtain the complex analyticity of pluri-harmonic maps from compact complex manifolds to compact Kaehler manifolds (and Riemannian manifolds) with non-degenerate curvatures, which are analogous to several fundamental results in [28,Siu], [14,Jost-Yau] and [26, Sampson].

Abstract:We study a class of maps, called Pseudo Horizontally Weakly Confor- mal (PHWC), which includes horizontally weakly conformal mappings. We give geometrical conditions ensuring the harmonicity of a (PHWC) map, making it a pseudo harmonic morphism, a generalisation of harmonic morphism, for which we broaden the Baird-Eells Theorem. Finally, considering pseudo horizontally homothetic maps, we extend a theorem of Aprodu, Aprodu and Brinzanescu to pseudo harmonic morphisms, and show that the dual stress-energy of such maps is horizontally covariant constant.

However, there are many polynomial growth harmonic maps from R 2 to H 2 by the results of Z. Han, L.-F. Tam, A. Treibergs and T. Wan. One of the purposes of this paper is to construct harmonic maps from R n to H m by prescribing boundary data at infinity. The boundary data is assumed to satisfy some symmetric properties. On the other hand, it was proved by Han-Tam-Treibergs-Wan that under some reasonable assumptions, the image of a harmonic diffeomorphism from R 2 into H 2 is an ideal polygon with n + 2 vertices on the geometric boundary of H 2 if and only if its Hopf differential is of the form odz 2 where o is a polynomial of degree n. It is unclear whether one can find explicit relation between the coefficients of o and the vertices of the image of the harmonic map. The second purpose of this paper is to investigate this problem. We will explicitly demonstrate some families of polynomial holomorphic quadratic differentials, such that the harmonic maps from R 2 into H 2 with Hopf differentials in the same family will have the same image. In proving this, we first study the asymptotic behaviors of harmonic maps from R 2 into H 2 with polynomial Hopf differentials odz 2 . The result may have independent interest.

Abstract:Let $\varphi\in C^0 \cap W^{1,2}(\Sigma, X)$ where $\Sigma$ is a compact Riemann surface, $X$ is a compact locally CAT(1) space, and $W^{1,2}(\Sigma,X)$ is defined as in Korevaar-Schoen. We use the technique of harmonic replacement to prove that either there exists a harmonic map $u:\Sigma \to X$ homotopic to $\varphi$ or there exists a conformal harmonic map $v:\mathbb S^2 \to X$. To complete the argument, we prove compactness for energy minimizers and a removable singularity theorem for conformal harmonic maps.

Abstract: A $k$-harmonic map is a critical point of the $k$-energy in the space of smooth maps between two Riemannian manifolds. In this paper, we prove that if $M^n (n\ge 3)$ is a CMC proper triharmonic hypersurface with at most three distinct principal curvatures in a space form $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}(c)$, then $M$ has constant scalar curvature. This supports the generalized Chen's conjecture when $c\le 0$. When $c=1$, we give an optimal upper bound of the mean curvature $H$ for a non-totally umbilical proper CMC $k$-harmonic hypersurface with constant scalar curvature in a sphere. We also prove that a proper CMC triharmonic with two distinct principal curvatures in a sphere must be locally a generalized Clifford torus with suitable parameters. At last, we give the complete classification of the 3-dimensional closed proper CMC triharmonic hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{S}^{4}$.

Abstract:We show that surfaces such that the natural projections of the unit normal bundles are harmonic morphisms are composed of minimal points and totally umbilical points. As its application, we find a harmonic map from the torus to the complex quadric in CP3 such that the projection map of the associated sphere bundle constructed by Gudmundsson is not a harmonic morphism. This contrasts sharply with the situation for holomorphic maps. We also establish sufficient conditions for reducing the codimension of an isometric immersion with conformal second fundamental form.

Abstract:Let M and N be compact Riemannian manifolds. To prove the global existence and convergence of the heat flow for harmonic maps between M and N, it suffices to show the nonexistence of harmonic spheres and nonexistence of quasi-harmonic spheres. In this paper, we prove that, if the universal covering of N admits a nonnegative strictly convex function with polynomial growth, then there are no quasi-harmonic spheres nor harmonic spheres. This generalizes the famous Eells–Sampson’s theorem (Am J Math 86:109–169, [7]).

Abstract:In this paper, we studied the regularity problem for harmonic maps into hyperbolic spaces with prescribed singularities along codimension two submanifolds. This is motivated from one of Hawking's conjectures on the uniqueness of Kerr solutions among all axially symmetric asymptotically flat stationary solutions to the vacuum Einstein equation in general relativity.
