Abstract:In this note we give a method to construct non-trivial harmonic mor- phisms via conformal change of the metric of the domain generalizing a theorem previously only known in the case of start manifold to be an open subset of C2. As its application, we manufacture harmonic morphisms from conformally flat spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we generalize the Bochner-Kodaira formulas to the case of Hermitian complex (possibly non-holomorphic) vector bundles over compact Hermitian (possibly non-Kähler) manifolds. As applications, we get the complex analyticity of harmonic maps between compact Hermitian manifolds.

Abstract:We prove that any (real or complex) analytic horizontally conformal submersion from a three‐dimensional conformal manifold (M3, cM) to a two‐dimensional conformal manifold (N2, cN) can be, locally, ‘extended’ to a unique harmonic morphism from the ℋ(eaven)‐space (H4, g) of (M3, cN) to (N2, cN). Moreover, any positive harmonic morphism with two‐dimensional fibres from (H4, g) is obtained in this way.

Abstract:We show that surfaces such that the natural projections of the unit normal bundles are harmonic morphisms are composed of minimal points and totally umbilical points. As its application, we find a harmonic map from the torus to the complex quadric in CP3 such that the projection map of the associated sphere bundle constructed by Gudmundsson is not a harmonic morphism. This contrasts sharply with the situation for holomorphic maps. We also establish sufficient conditions for reducing the codimension of an isometric immersion with conformal second fundamental form.

Abstract:Harmonic morphisms are maps between Riemannian manifolds that pull back harmonic functions to harmonic functions. These maps are characterized as horizontally weakly conformal harmonic maps and they have many interesting links and applications to several areas in mathematics (see the book by Baird and Wood for details). In this paper, we study generalized harmonic morphisms which are defined to be maps between Riemannian manifolds that pull back harmonic functions to biharmonic functions. We obtain some characterizations of generalized harmonic morphisms into a Euclidean space and give two methods of constructions that can be used to produce many examples of generalized harmonic morphisms which are not harmonic morphisms. We also give a complete classification of generalized harmonic morphisms among the projections of a warped product space, which provides infinitely many examples of proper biharmonic Riemannian submersions and conformal submersions from a warped product manifold.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of various harmonic maps from Hermitian manifolds to Kaehler, Hermitian and Riemannian manifolds respectively. By using refined Bochner formulas on Hermitian (possibly non-Kaehler) manifolds, we derive new rigidity results on Hermitian harmonic maps from compact Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds, and we also obtain the complex analyticity of pluri-harmonic maps from compact complex manifolds to compact Kaehler manifolds (and Riemannian manifolds) with non-degenerate curvatures, which are analogous to several fundamental results in [28,Siu], [14,Jost-Yau] and [26, Sampson].

Abstract:By simplifying the first and the second variation formulas of the energy functional and generalizing the Weitzenbock formula, we study the stability and the rigidity of harmonic maps between Finsler manifolds. It is proved that any nondegenerate harmonic map from a compact Einstein Riemannian manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature to a Berwald manifold with nonpositive flag curvature is totally geodesic and there is no nondegenerate stable harmonic map from a Riemannian unit sphere S-n (n > 2) to any Finsler manifold.

Abstract:We produce p-harmonic morphisms by conformal foliations and Clifford systems. First, we give a useful criterion for a foliation on an m-dimensional Riemannian manifold locally generated by conformal fields to produce p-harmonic morphisms. By using this criterion we manufacture conformal foliations, with codimension not equal to p, which are locally the fibres of p-harmonic morphisms. Then we give a new approach for the construction of p-harmonic morphisms from ℝ m \{0} to ℝ n . By the well-known representation of Clifford algebras, we find an abundance of the new $\frac{2}{3}{\left( {m + 1} \right)}$-harmonic morphism ϕ : ℝ m \{0} → ℝ n where m = 2kδ(n − 1).

Abstract:We derive the variation formula of the partial derivative-energy and of the partial derivative-energy for a smooth map from a complex Finsler manifold to an Hermitian manifold. Applying the result on a nonlinear elliptic system due to J. Jost and S. T. Yau, we obtain some existence theorems of harmonic maps from strongly Kahler Finsler manifolds to Kahler manifolds. Also, for such maps, we show that the difference between partial derivative-energy and partial derivative-energy is a homotopy invariant.

Abstract:We study a class of maps, called Pseudo Horizontally Weakly Confor- mal (PHWC), which includes horizontally weakly conformal mappings. We give geometrical conditions ensuring the harmonicity of a (PHWC) map, making it a pseudo harmonic morphism, a generalisation of harmonic morphism, for which we broaden the Baird-Eells Theorem. Finally, considering pseudo horizontally homothetic maps, we extend a theorem of Aprodu, Aprodu and Brinzanescu to pseudo harmonic morphisms, and show that the dual stress-energy of such maps is horizontally covariant constant.

Abstract:By defining new Bryant-type vector fields for foliations on a Riemannian manifold we find necessary and sufficient conditions that a foliation produces p-harmonic morphisms. Two applications are given. First, we characterize one-parameter conformal actions using p-harmonic morphisms. Then we classify p-harmonic morphisms on a constant curvature space with one-dimensional fibres by studying bi-minimal distributions. We also give a description of all conformal foliations which have minimal fibres on a Riemannian manifold in terms of p-harmonic morphisms.

Abstract:Let  be an isometric immersion between Riemannian manifolds and  be the unit normal bundle of f. We discuss two natural Riemannian metrics on the total space  and necessary and sufficient conditions on f for the projection map  to be a harmonic morphism. We show that the projection map of the unit normal bundle of a minimal surface in a Riemannian manifold is a harmonic morphism with totally geodesic fibres.
Harmonic Morphisms and p-Harmonic Functions on the Classical Compact Symmetric Spaces via the Cartan Embedding

Abstract:Given a symmetric triple $(G,K,\sigma)$ of compact type, with $G^{\sigma} = K$, the well known Cartan embedding $\hat{\Phi}: G/K \to G$ homothetically embeds the symmetric space $M = G/K$ as a totally geodesic submanifold of $G$. In this thesis we show that $\hat{\Phi}$ and the related $K$-invariant Cartan map $\Phi = \hat{\Phi}\circ \pi$ are harmonic. This yields simple formulae relating the tension field $\tau$ and the recently introduced conformality operator $\kappa$ on the symmetric space $M$ to those on the image $\Phi(G)$ of the Cartan map. We use these formulae to construct common eigenfunctions of the tension field and conformality operator on all the classical irreducible compact symmetric spaces. On the complex and quaternionic Grassmannians we, in addition, construct eigenfamilies, which are families of compatible eigenfunctions. In the case of the quaternionic Grassmannians, some of these eigenfamilies are entirely new. It was recently discovered by S. Gudmundsson, A. Sakovich and M. Sobak that such eigenfunctions can be employed to construct proper $p$-harmonic functions, and that eigenfamilies can be applied to construct complex-valued harmonic morphisms. The results of this thesis can thus be used to construct harmonic morphisms and $p$-harmonic functions on the classical compact irreducible symmetric spaces, and in the case of the quaternionic Grassmannians, new examples of such maps.

Then we discuss under what conditions (i) the image of a holomorphic map from a cosymplectic manifold is also cosymplectic, (ii) a holomophic map with Hermitian image defines a Hermitian structure on its domain.

Abstract:Harmonic maps constitute a powerful tool for the analysis of moduli and Teichmuller spaces of compact Riemann surfaces. These moduli and Teichmuller spaces parametrize the different conformal structures a given compact differentiable surface F of some genus p can carry, together with a topological marking in the Teichmuller case. That is, each point in the moduli space Mp or the Teichmuller space Tp corresponds to some (marked) Riemann surface of genus p, that is, to some conformal structure on F . Mp then is a quotient of Tp by the mapping class group Γp, the group of homotopy classes of oriented diffeomorphisms of F . Since some nontrivial elements of Γp have fixed points, Mp acquires some quotient singularities. However, a suitable finite covering of Mp is free from singularities, that is, a manifold. Therefore, for many aspects, the singularities of Mp can be ignored, and this will sometimes simplify our discussion. – In this review, we shall confine ourselves mostly to the case p ≥ 2 which is the most difficult and most interesting case. Harmonic maps come from Riemannian geometry. They are defined as maps h : M → N between Riemannian manifolds that minimize a certain variational integral, called the energy. Thus, they depend on the Riemannian metrics of M and N . The theory works best when the metric of N has nonpositive sectional curvature. Harmonic maps can then be applied to moduli or Teichmuller spaces in two different ways. On one hand, one can look at harmonic maps to, from, or between Riemann surfaces and study how the harmonic maps or quantities associated to them, like their energy, depend on the underlying conformal structures. This is facilitated by the fact that the harmonic maps in question are unique in their homotopy classes, as we are looking at the case of genus p ≥ 2 which implies that the Riemann surfaces can be equipped with a hyperbolic metric, that is, one with constant negative curvature. Abstract:In this paper we study the change of conformal structure induced by harmonic diffeomorphisms between Riemann surfaces. The main result of this paper is to answer the following question raised by R. Schoen (see [20]): Is it true that Riemann surfaces which are related by a surjective harmonic diffeomorphism are necessarily quasiconformally related? We show that there exists a pair of Riemann surfaces of infinite topological type, which are related by a surjective harmonic diffeomorphism but which are not quasiconformally related. Also we characterize when the above question has a positive answer in the case of Riemann surfaces of finite topological type.

Abstract:Let $\varphi\in C^0 \cap W^{1,2}(\Sigma, X)$ where $\Sigma$ is a compact Riemann surface, $X$ is a compact locally CAT(1) space, and $W^{1,2}(\Sigma,X)$ is defined as in Korevaar-Schoen. We use the technique of harmonic replacement to prove that either there exists a harmonic map $u:\Sigma \to X$ homotopic to $\varphi$ or there exists a conformal harmonic map $v:\mathbb S^2 \to X$. To complete the argument, we prove compactness for energy minimizers and a removable singularity theorem for conformal harmonic maps.
