Abstract:The microstructures and chemical composition of sand burning layers on the directionally solidified blades of DZ22B nickel-based superalloy were studied by means of SEM and EDS. The results show that the metal penetration into ceramic shell facecoat is the main mechanism that leads to sand burning defect of the blades. The main composition of sand burning layers is fused alumina, which is the main component of the ceramic shell, and with some interfacial reaction products containing Cr2O3 and HfO2. The sand burning layer consists of fused alumina, i.e., the main component of the ceramic shell, and some interfacial reaction products containing Cr2O3 and HfO2. To improve the surface quality of the blades, a certain amount of sand burning inhibitor, named JD95, was added to the shell facecoat slurry. The results show that the sand burning inhibitor could significantly improve the metal penetration resistance of the fused alumina shell by adjusting the wettability between melt and ceramic shell facecoat. The casting experiment verified that the surface of DZ22B directionally solidified blade was smooth without sand burning defect and the metallic luster on the blade surface was obviously observed.
