Homeric Society and the Rise of the State in Ancient Greece

Abstract:Abstract The rise of the state in ancient Greece has always been the test case for the theory that the state was originated from a primitive tribal society.This theory has found many supporters both in China and in the West,although for very different reasons.This papers argues that the original state in ancient Greece emerged much earlier than scholars have assumed,and that the Mycenaean kingdoms are the earliest form of the Greek state.Although the Mycenaean kingdoms collapsed at around 1200 BC,much of their state structure survived into Homeric society.The social structure of Homeric society and social stratification also points to a state society headed by a king with his power much weakened,nonetheless clearly recognizable.
