The Theory of the “Athenian Revolution” and the Construction of the Classical Athenian Political System

Abstract:Western scholars’ recent research on Athenian democracy is mostly in favor of the theory of "revolution". They argue that Athenian democracy was born of a people’s revolution. However, there is no consensus on the timing of the outbreak of this revolution. In fact, this theory, to a certain extent, arises from their use of the model of the great revolutions of the modern West to explain the history of ancient Athens. For ideological reasons, Western scholars do their utmost to avoid using Marxist class analysis, although it offers a better explanation of the political history of Athens from the archaic period through to the classical age. Throughout this period the long-term, ceaseless and active struggle of the lower citizen class against the wealthy aristocratic class was the fundamental driving force in the establishment and maintenance of Athenian democracy.
