Abstract:This study proposes a simple but effective finite element method to simulate complex 3D crack propagation in quasi-brittle materials such as concrete. Cohesive interface elements, characterized by softening traction-separation constitutive laws, are embedded into initial meshes to model potential cracks. The method is implemented in connection with Abaqus. Various concrete structures under static and dynamic loadings were modeled with excellent results compared with experiments.

Abstract:The algorithm is discussed and a program is developed based on X-FEM in this chapter for simulating subinterfacial crack growth in bimaterials. Numerical analyses of crack growth in bimaterials give a clear description of the effect on fractures made by the interface and loading. Computational results are compared with experiment data, which shows that X-FEM is more powerful in capturing the actual crack path than standard FEM. Further results show that there is an equilibrium state of mode I cracks in bimaterials if the effects of material inhomogeneity and loading asymmetry counteract each other.

Abstract:It is well-known that the boundary element method is suitable for the study of linear elastic fracture mechanics problems for which singularities arise at the tip of crack. For the elasto-plastic analysis of the crack problem where the yield zone is localized in a small region near the crack tip, the boundary element method is still quite effective. In this paper a kind of boundary element method for the elastoplastic analysis of bimaterial has been presented. It is also applied to the analysis of interface crack problem. In order to raise the efficiency the Hetényi’s fundamental solution has been applied as the kernel of boundary integral equations. Some numerical examples have been presented to show the efficiency of the presented scheme.

Abstract:Antiplane response of the nonhomogeneous composite material containing some cracks subjected to dynamic loadings has been analyzed. The complete solution of entire elastic region was obtained through introducing the mechanical boundary and strip interface conditions. Attention is focused on time dependent full field solutions of stresses, stress intensity factor and strain energy release rate. The dynamic stress intensity factor of a functionally graded material with two cracks under sudden applied factors on crack faces were presented for various material nonhomogeneity parameters.
Boundary element analysis of small-scale yielding of bimaterial interface crack

Abstract:An elastoplastic boundary element subregion method is proposed and improved to be used it in fracture problems. According to the common conclusions of the small-scale yielding problem of bimaterial interface crack, the full field solutions under the small-scale yielding condition are solved with boundary layer formulation by using this method. The results prove that the elastoplastic boundary element subregion method is feasible for such kind of problems. The stress field near crack tip and the plastic zone can be obtained by using fewer boundary elements and interior cells to go deep into the plastic zone of the crack tip.

Abstract:A specimen partially bonded by two wedge-shaped plates of dissimilar materials is impulsively loaded, Tip response of a crack along the interface is investigated to the action of stress wave with transmission and reflection. A hybrid technique of combining dynamic photoelasticity with dynamic caustics is used to analyze the wave propagation in media and the singular behavior of crack tips. Based on some characteristic dimensions of the caustic curves belonging to each medium, the complex stress intensity factors of the interfacial crack tips are computed, showing an oscillation history of the modulus with the passing of the compressive wave and the intersection of the reflected tensile pulse.

Abstract:A general peridynamics-based framework for elastic bimaterial interface fracture analysis is established. In this frame, the formation of peridynamic interface bond force is presented for nonlocal interface modeling, and the energy release rate and mode mixity of interface cracks are computed with peridynamic model. A modified critical energy density (MCED) criterion considering both interfacial and materials fracture toughness is proposed for peridynamic bond failure analysis, and the bond failure competition strategy is considered for crack path selection of an interface crack along or kinking out of the interface. Then, four tests of a bimaterial plate under uniform tensile stress, asymmetric bimaterial cantilever beams (ABCB), bimaterial single edge notched (BSEN) and four-point shearing (FPS) tests are investigated for the model verification and application. The deformation and fracture behaviors of these specimens are predicted with the proposed peridynamic models, and compared to those from FEM, theoretical and experimental solutions. The results show that the proposed peridynamics-based method can successfully capture the characteristics of bimaterial interface fracture, including the delamination fracture, kinking nucleation and crack path selection of interface cracks.

Abstract:The experimental methods of dynamic photoelasticity, optical caustics and the numerical method of finite element technique are utilized to study the transient response and the debonding failure of a cantilever beam of bimaterial with an edge crack in the center part of the main beam terminating at the interface with the reinforced beam. The isochromatic patterns are observed to investigate the bending wave propagation of elastodynamic stresses in the composite beam and the shadow patterns of optical caustics are recorded to obtain the response of the dynamic stress intensity factors of the crack tip in the main beam to illustrate the effect of the reinforcement. The stress distribution at the interface is analyzed to interpret the bond rupture of the adhesive layer of the composite structure. The experimental results and the numerical analysis show clearly the dynamic behavior of the composite beam before and after the interface debonding.

Abstract:A boundary element formulation is developed to determine the complex stress intensity factors associated with cracks on the interface between dissimilar materials. This represents an extension of the methodology developed previously by the authors for determination of free-edge generalized stress intensity factors on bi-material interfaces, which employs displacements and weighted tractions as primary variables. However, in the present work, the characteristic oscillating stress singularity is addressed through the introduction of complex weighting functions for both displacements and tractions, along with corresponding non-standard numerical quadrature formulas. As a result, this boundary-only approach provides extremely accurate mesh-independent solutions for a range of two-dimensional interface crack problems. A number of computational examples are considered to assess the performance of the method in comparison with analytical solutions and previous work on the subject. As a final application, the method is applied to study the scaling behavior of epoxy-metal butt joints.

Finite Element Modelling of Complex 3D Static and Dynamic Crack Propagation by Embedding Cohesive Elements in Abaqus

Abstract:This study proposes an algorithm of embedding cohesive elements in Abaqus and develops the computer code to model 3D complex crack propagation in quasi-brittle materials in a relatively easy and efficient manner. The cohesive elements with softening traction-separation relations and damage initiation and evolution laws are embedded between solid elements in regions of interest in the initial mesh to model potential cracks. The initial mesh can consist of tetrahedrons, wedges, bricks or a mixture of these elements. Neither remeshing nor objective crack propagation criteria are needed. Four examples of concrete specimens, including a wedge-splitting test, a notched beam under torsion, a pull-out test of an anchored cylinder and a notched beam under impact, were modelled and analysed. The simulated crack propagation processes and load-displacement curves agreed well with test results or other numerical simulations for all the examples using initial meshes with reasonable densities. Making use of Abaqus’s rich pre/postprocessing functionalities and powerful standard/explicit solvers, the developed method offers a practical tool for engineering analysts to model complex 3D fracture problems.

Abstract:The sub-interfacial crack growth in bi-materials is numerically studied in this paper using the extended finite element method (X-FEM), which gives a clear description of the effect on fracture which is made by the interface and loading condition. Computational results are compared with the experiment data, which demonstrates that X-FEM is more powerful to capture the actual crack growing path than the standard FEM. Further researches show that there exists an equilibrium state which forms a mode-I crack growth in bi-materials. An empirical formula is proposed which quantitatively reveals the influence of material inhomogeneity, loading asymmetry and location of the initial crack on this state.

Abstract:This paper concerns the problems of dynamic response of the semi-infinite stationary mode III cracks in bonded materials subjected to dynamic load. Two kinds of semi-infinite cracks are considered that either lies along or perpendicularly terminates the interface of two half-plane dissimilar materials perfectly bonded together. The stress fields near the crack tips are analyzed in which the propagations of the different stress waves are illustrated. The results show that the standard square root singularity of stress distribution is valid for the interface crack but untenable for the crack perpendicular to the interface.

Abstract:A new interaction integral formulation is derived for obtaining mixed-mode stress intensity factors (SIFs) of an interface crack with the tip close to complicated material interfaces. The method is a conservation integral that relies on two admissible mechanical states (actual and auxiliary fields). By a suitable selection of the auxiliary fields, the domain formulation does not contain any integral related to the material interfaces, which makes it quite convenient to deal with complicated interface problems. The numerical implementation of the derived expression is combined with the extended finite element method (XFEM). According to the numerical calculations, the interaction integral shows good accuracy for straight and curved interface crack problems and exhibits domain-independence for material interfaces. Finally, an interfacial fracture problem is investigated for the representative centrosymmetric structure formed by two constituent materials.

Abstract:Singular fields around a crack running dynamically along the interface between two anisotropic substrates are examined. Emphasis is placed on extending an established frame work for interface fracture mechanics to include rapidly applied loads, fast crack propagation and strain rate dependent material response. For a crack running at non-uniform speed, the crack tip behaviour is governed by an instantaneous steady-state, two-dimensional singularity. This simplifies the problem, rendering the Stroh techniques applicable. In general, the singularity oscillates, similar to quasi-static cracks. The oscillation index is infinite when the crack runs at the Rayleigh wave speed of the more compliant material, suggesting a large contact zone may exist behind the crack tip at high speeds. In contrast to a crack in homogeneous materials, an interface crack has a finite energy factor at the lower Rayleigh wave speed. Singular fields are presented for isotropic bimaterials, so are the key quantities for orthotropic bimaterials. Implications on crack branching and substrate cracking are discussed. Dynamic stress intensity factors for anisotropic bimaterials are solved for several basic steady state configurations, including the Yoffe, Gol’dshtein and Dugdale problems. Under time-independent loading, the dynamic stress intensity factor can be factorized into its equilibrium counterpart and the universal functions of crack speed.

Abstract:A versatile hybrid finite element scheme consisting of special crack-tip elements and crack face contact elements is developed to analyse a partially closed interface crack between two dissimilar anisotropic elastic materials. The crack-tip element incorporates higher-order asymptotic solutions for an interfacial crack tip. These solutions are obtained from complex variable methods in Stroh formalism. For a closed interfacial crack tip, a generalized contact model in which the crack-tip oscillation is eliminated is adopted in the calculation. The hybrid finite element modelling allows the stress singularity at an open and closed crack tip to be accurately treated. The accuracy and convergence of the developed scheme are tested with respect to the known interface crack solutions. Utilizing this numerical scheme, the stress intensity factors and contact zone are calculated for a finite interface crack between a laminated composite material.

Abstract:The extended finite element method (X‐FEM) proposed by Belytschko et al. (International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering 1999; 45: 602; 1999; 46: 131; 2001; 50: 993) uses interpolation functions based on the concept of partition of unity, and considers the asymptotic solution and the discontinuity of displacement fields near a crack independently of the finite element mesh. This paper describes the application of X‐FEM to stress analyses of structures containing interface cracks between dissimilar materials. In X‐FEM, an interface crack can be modelled by locally changing an interpolation function in the element near a crack. The energy release rate should be separated into individual stress intensity factors, K1 and K2, because the stress field around the interface crack has mixed modes coupled with mode‐I and mode‐II. For this purpose, various evaluation methods used in conjunction with numerical methods such as FEM and BEM are reviewed. These methods are examined in numerical examples of elastostatic analyses of structures containing interface cracks using X‐FEM. The numerical results show that X‐FEM is an effective method for performing stress analyses and evaluating stress intensity factors in problems related to bi‐material fractures. Abstract:A thermomechanical peridynamic framework is established for fracture analysis of dissimilar material interface coupled with residual thermal effect. In this frame, an extended peridynamic mixed-mode failure model considering thermal effect is proposed for interfacial fracture prediction, and the peridynamics-based methods for interface crack energy release rate and mode mixity computations are given. Meanwhile, a new peridynamic contact model is proposed for frictional contact modeling of crack surfaces. Then, three examples of the single edge-notched bimaterial (SENB), asymmetric bimaterial cantilever beams (ABCB) and four-point shearing (FPS) tests, are analyzed for the model verification and application. The elastic and interfacial fracture behaviors of these tests are predicted by the proposed peridynamic models, and compared to the analytical and the FEM solutions. The results show that the proposed peridynamic models can successfully predict the failure characteristics of materials interface, and capture the role of residual thermal effect on the interfacial fracture.
