Abstract:A specimen partially bonded by two wedge-shaped plates of dissimilar materials is impulsively loaded, Tip response of a crack along the interface is investigated to the action of stress wave with transmission and reflection. A hybrid technique of combining dynamic photoelasticity with dynamic caustics is used to analyze the wave propagation in media and the singular behavior of crack tips. Based on some characteristic dimensions of the caustic curves belonging to each medium, the complex stress intensity factors of the interfacial crack tips are computed, showing an oscillation history of the modulus with the passing of the compressive wave and the intersection of the reflected tensile pulse.

Abstract:The algorithm is discussed and a program is developed based on X-FEM in this chapter for simulating subinterfacial crack growth in bimaterials. Numerical analyses of crack growth in bimaterials give a clear description of the effect on fractures made by the interface and loading. Computational results are compared with experiment data, which shows that X-FEM is more powerful in capturing the actual crack path than standard FEM. Further results show that there is an equilibrium state of mode I cracks in bimaterials if the effects of material inhomogeneity and loading asymmetry counteract each other.

Abstract:This study proposes a simple but effective finite element method to simulate complex 3D crack propagation in quasi-brittle materials such as concrete. Cohesive interface elements, characterized by softening traction-separation constitutive laws, are embedded into initial meshes to model potential cracks. The method is implemented in connection with Abaqus. Various concrete structures under static and dynamic loadings were modeled with excellent results compared with experiments.

Abstract:The experimental methods of dynamic photoelasticity, optical caustics and the numerical method of finite element technique are utilized to study the transient response and the debonding failure of a cantilever beam of bimaterial with an edge crack in the center part of the main beam terminating at the interface with the reinforced beam. The isochromatic patterns are observed to investigate the bending wave propagation of elastodynamic stresses in the composite beam and the shadow patterns of optical caustics are recorded to obtain the response of the dynamic stress intensity factors of the crack tip in the main beam to illustrate the effect of the reinforcement. The stress distribution at the interface is analyzed to interpret the bond rupture of the adhesive layer of the composite structure. The experimental results and the numerical analysis show clearly the dynamic behavior of the composite beam before and after the interface debonding.

Abstract:Particle-reinforced composites (PRCs) have been widely used in numerous engineering applications; however, reliability issues related to interfacial fracture still remain major factors preventing their further development. By combining the extended finite element method (XFEM), a domain-independent interaction integral (DII-integral) method is developed to effectively evaluate the mixed-mode dynamic stress intensity factors (DSIFs) of an interface crack in bi-materials with an inclusion close to the crack tip under an impact loading. With the existence of the inclusion in the integral domain, the DII-integral is rigorously and numerically proved to be still domain-independent. The results demonstrate that the DSIFs are more sensitive to the elastic modulus than the mass density of the inclusion. The critical distance from the inclusion to the crack tip and the critical size of the inclusion are determined. The present study is of central significance for the fracture analysis and safety design of PRCs.

Abstract:For the fracture evaluation of inclined cracks terminating at the dissimilar material interface, not only the singularities, but also the detailed stress field and its stress intensity factors are necessary. However, though there are many researches reported on the singularity analysis, the stress field and its stress intensity factors are still not clear. This paper has deduced theoretically the singular stress and displacement fields near the tip of a crack terminating at the interface between bonded dissimilar materials, for both cases of real and oscillatory singularities. From the deduced singular stress field, the stress intensity factors are defined for such a crack, and the corresponding numerical extrapolation methods are also proposed. Through the numerical examinations, it is found that the theoretical stress distributions agree well with the numerical results obtained by the finite element method. Moreover, the proposed extrapolation method shows a good linearity, thus it can be used as an efficient way to determine the characteristics of the stress and displacement fields near the tip of a crack terminating at interface.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with stress intensity factors of a three-point bending and shear specimen with an offset edge crack by means of a boundary element method which consists of the constant displacement discontinuity element presented by Crouch and Starfield and the crack tip displacement discontinuity elements proposed by the author.In the boundary element implementation the left or the right crack tip displacement discontinuity element is placed locally at the corresponding left or right crack tip on top of the constant displacement discontinuity elements that cover the entire crack surface and the other boundaries.Test examples are included to show that the method is very efficient and accurate for stress intensity factor calculation of plane elasticity crack problems in both infinite and finite domains.Specifically,the stress intensity factors for three-point bending and shear specimen with an offset edge crack are studied in detail.Many results are given.

Abstract:Multi-layered structures and composite materials have been used broadly and many defects between interfaces are inevitably in them. Among of the defects, the crack plays an important role for the damage of the structures. In practices, surfaces of interfacial cracks often produce complicated impact each other under external loadings. These additional loadings due to the impacting have great effects to the damage of the structures containing cracks. In this study, dynamic stress intensity factors of an interfacial crack between two homogeneous isotropic half infinite mediums are calculated. Other external loadings are neglected and the only load due to closures or frictions of the crack surfaces is assumed to be a pair of anti-plane moving impacting loading with constant velocity. Fourier and Laplace transforms are employed to simplify general wave equation into ordinary differential equation. Consider the zero initial condition and radiation conditions in far-fields, the solution in double transform domains is obtained. The Cauchy singular integral equation of dislocation density function (DDF) is then derived through Fourier integral inversion. By expanding DDF into Jacobi polynomials with a weight function, the DDF in Laplace transform domain is obtained numerically, and dynamic stress intensity factors of crack tips are expressed using the DDF. To determine the dynamic stress intensity factors in time domain, the Guy Miller method for Laplace inversion is used. Finally, a simple example is analyzed and the dynamic stress intensity factors are displayed graphically.

Abstract:A new interaction integral formulation is derived for obtaining mixed-mode stress intensity factors (SIFs) of an interface crack with the tip close to complicated material interfaces. The method is a conservation integral that relies on two admissible mechanical states (actual and auxiliary fields). By a suitable selection of the auxiliary fields, the domain formulation does not contain any integral related to the material interfaces, which makes it quite convenient to deal with complicated interface problems. The numerical implementation of the derived expression is combined with the extended finite element method (XFEM). According to the numerical calculations, the interaction integral shows good accuracy for straight and curved interface crack problems and exhibits domain-independence for material interfaces. Finally, an interfacial fracture problem is investigated for the representative centrosymmetric structure formed by two constituent materials.

Abstract:The sub-interfacial crack growth in bi-materials is numerically studied in this paper using the extended finite element method (X-FEM), which gives a clear description of the effect on fracture which is made by the interface and loading condition. Computational results are compared with the experiment data, which demonstrates that X-FEM is more powerful to capture the actual crack growing path than the standard FEM. Further researches show that there exists an equilibrium state which forms a mode-I crack growth in bi-materials. An empirical formula is proposed which quantitatively reveals the influence of material inhomogeneity, loading asymmetry and location of the initial crack on this state.

Abstract:The integral-differential equations for three-dimensional planar interfacial cracks of arbitrary shape in transversely isotropic bimaterials were derived by virtue of the Somigliana identity and the fundamental solutions, in which the displacement discontinuities across the crack faces are the unknowns to be determined. The interface is parallel to both the planes of isotropy. The singular behaviors of displacement and stress near the crack border were analyzed and the stress singularity indexes were obtained by integral equation method. The stress intensity factors were expressed in terms of the displacement discontinuities. In the non-oscillatory case, the hyper-singular boundary integral-differential equations were reduced to hyper-singular boundary integral equations similar to those of homogeneously isotropic materials.

Abstract:The interaction between crack propagation and interfaces is one of the critical problems in bimaterial systems. In this paper, interfacial and subinterfacial fracture behaviors are simulated to investigate this interaction. The modeling approach for bimaterial structures is first introduced, where the extended bond-based peridynamic model is adopted. Then a convergence study is carried out with a bimaterial plate containing two asymmetric inclusions under tensile load. The comparison with the finite element solution validates the proposed modeling approach. Subsequently, several interfacial and subinterfacial fracture cases are considered to pinpoint the influence of interfaces on crack propagation. The numerical results show that the proposed method can satisfactorily capture the interplay between interfaces and crack propagation. Furthermore, in the subinterfacial fracture case, an equilibrium state of mode-I crack growth is successfully obtained, implying that a specific loading condition can counteract the effect of the interface.

Abstract:The dynamic stress intensity factor of a finite interface crack between double-layer mediums is calculated. The crack surfaces are torn by a couple of gradient circling filling anti-shear loading. Using integral transforms, the Cauchy singular integral equation of dislocation intensity function in the transform fields is obtained. The dynamic stress intensity factor in time-t field is determined by the numerical solution of the equation and numerical inverse technique of Laplace transform. It is found that the high speed can suppress the vibration of dynamic stress intensity factor.

Abstract:A general solution for the stresses and displacements of a cracked sliding interface between anisotropic bimaterials subjected to uniform tensile stress at infinity is given by using the Stroh’s formulation. Horizontal and vertical opening displacements on the interface, stress intensity factors, and energy release rate are expressed in real form, which are valid for any kind of anisotropic materials including the degenerate materials such as isotropic materials. It is observed that stresses exhibit the traditional inverse square root singularities near the crack tips, and the vertical opening displacement and energy release rate are intimately related to a real parameter λ determined by the elastic constants of the anisotropic bimaterials.

Abstract:An elastoplastic boundary element subregion method is proposed and improved to be used it in fracture problems. According to the common conclusions of the small-scale yielding problem of bimaterial interface crack, the full field solutions under the small-scale yielding condition are solved with boundary layer formulation by using this method. The results prove that the elastoplastic boundary element subregion method is feasible for such kind of problems. The stress field near crack tip and the plastic zone can be obtained by using fewer boundary elements and interior cells to go deep into the plastic zone of the crack tip.

Abstract:Singular fields around a crack running dynamically along the interface between two anisotropic substrates are examined. Emphasis is placed on extending an established frame work for interface fracture mechanics to include rapidly applied loads, fast crack propagation and strain rate dependent material response. For a crack running at non-uniform speed, the crack tip behaviour is governed by an instantaneous steady-state, two-dimensional singularity. This simplifies the problem, rendering the Stroh techniques applicable. In general, the singularity oscillates, similar to quasi-static cracks. The oscillation index is infinite when the crack runs at the Rayleigh wave speed of the more compliant material, suggesting a large contact zone may exist behind the crack tip at high speeds. In contrast to a crack in homogeneous materials, an interface crack has a finite energy factor at the lower Rayleigh wave speed. Singular fields are presented for isotropic bimaterials, so are the key quantities for orthotropic bimaterials. Implications on crack branching and substrate cracking are discussed. Dynamic stress intensity factors for anisotropic bimaterials are solved for several basic steady state configurations, including the Yoffe, Gol’dshtein and Dugdale problems. Under time-independent loading, the dynamic stress intensity factor can be factorized into its equilibrium counterpart and the universal functions of crack speed.
