Abstract:We study hypersurfaces of the four‐dimensional Thurston geometry Sol04 , which is a Riemannian homogeneous space and a solvable Lie group. In particular, we give a full classification of hypersurfaces whose second fundamental form is a Codazzi tensor—including totally geodesic hypersurfaces and hypersurfaces with parallel second fundamental form—and of totally umbilical hypersurfaces of Sol04 . We also give a closed expression for the Riemann curvature tensor of Sol04 , using two integrable complex structures.

Complete totally geodesic subsets of the complex hyperbolic plane: an elementary classification

Abstract:The non-trivial complete totally geodesic submanifolds of the complex hyperbolic plane $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ are the complex geodesics and the real planes. We present two new proofs for this fact. One is a short proof based on an algebraic formula for the Riemann curvature tensor due to S. Anan'in and C. Grossi and resembles the traditional proof using Lie theory. The other is purely elementary and geometric, relying on the structures in $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ instead of general theories. In this second approach, we prove a slightly stronger result: the only non-trivial complete totally geodesic subsets of $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ are the complex geodesics and the real planes without assuming that the subsets are submanifolds a priori. This second proof is also intriguing for only making use of elementary geometric constructions.

Abstract:We show that a simply connected Riemannian homogeneous space M which admits a totally geodesic hypersurface F is isometric to either (a) the Riemannian product of a space of constant curvature and a homogeneous space, or (b) the warped product of the Euclidean space and a homogeneous space, or (c) the twisted product of the line and a homogeneous space (with the warping/twisting function given explicitly). In the first case, F is also a Riemannian product; in the last two cases, it is a leaf of a totally geodesic homogeneous fibration. Case (c) can alternatively be characterised by the fact that M admits a Riemannian submersion onto the universal cover of the group SL(2) equipped with a particular left-invariant metric, and F is the preimage of the two-dimensional solvable totally geodesic subgroup.

Abstract:We use arithmetic and Hodge-theoretic techniques to study pencils of Calabi-Yau varieties realized as highly symmetric hypersurfaces in Grassmannians and their quotients, demonstrating that their geometric properties are distinct from the classical mirrors of Calabi-Yau Grassmannian hypersurfaces.

Abstract:We study relative differential and integral forms and their cohomology on families of supermanifolds and prove a relative version of Poincaré duality relating the cohomology of differential and integral forms in different geometric categories. In the smooth category, we complement Poincaré duality by proving the compactly supported Poincaré lemmas for both differential and integral forms, filling a gap in the literature. We then use our results to study supergravity. In particular, we describe supergravity in dimension three via higher Cartan structures, which can be regarded as certain classes of connections taking values in $L_\infty$-superalgebras. We then use relative Poincaré duality to state a general form of the action principle in a mathematically rigorous manner. This interpolates in a unified fashion between two equivalent formulations of supergravity, one based on the superspace approach and the other on the group manifold approach in the physics literature.

Abstract:This thesis mainly treats two developments of the classical theory of hypersurfaces inside pseudo-Riemannian space forms. The former - a joint work with Francesco Bonsante - consists in the study of immersions of smooth manifolds into holomorphic Riemannian space forms of constant curvature -1 (including SL(2,C) with a multiple of its Killing form): this leads to a Gauss-Codazzi theorem, it suggests an approach to holomorphic transitioning of immersions into pseudo-Riemannian space forms, a trick to construct holomorphic maps into the PSL(2,C)-character variety, and leads to a restatement of Bers theorem. The latter - a joint work with Andrea Seppi - consists in the study of immersions of n-manifolds inside the space of geodesics of the hyperbolic (n+1)-space. We give a characterization, in terms of the para-Sasaki structure of this space of geodesics, of the Riemannian immersions which turn out to be Gauss maps of equivariant immersions into the hyperbolic space.

Abstract:We study the geometry of a weak Riemannian metric on the infinite dimensional manifold of compact spacelike Cauchy hypersurfaces in a globally hyperbolic spacetime. We show that the geodesic distance (i.e. the infimum of lengths of paths between two given points) is positive, and that the sectional curvature is well defined and non-positive.

Abstract:The classifications of locally strongly convex equiaffine hypersurfaces (resp. centroaffine hypersurfaces) with parallel Fubini–Pick tensor with respect to the Levi-Civita connection of the Blaschke–Berwald affine metric (resp. centroaffine metric) have been completed in the last decades. In this paper we define generalized Calabi products in Calabi geometry and prove decomposition theorems in terms of their Calabi invariants. As the main result, we obtain a complete classification of Calabi hypersurfaces in with parallel Fubini–Pick tensor with respect to the Levi-Civita connection of the Calabi metric. This result is a counterpart in Calabi geometry of the classification theorems in equiaffine situation Hu et al. (J Diff Geom 87:239-307, 2011) and centroaffine situation Cheng et al. (Results Math 72:419-469, 2017).

Totally Geodesic Surfaces in Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds: Algorithms and Examples

Abstract:Finding a totally geodesic surface, an embedded surface where the geodesics in the surface are also geodesics in the surrounding manifold, has been a problem of interest in the study of 3-manifolds. This has especially been of interest in hyperbolic 3-manifolds and knot complements, complements of piecewise-linearly embedded circles in the 3-sphere. This is due to Menasco-Reid's conjecture stating that hyperbolic knot complements do not contain such surfaces. Here, we present an algorithm that determines whether a given surface is totally geodesic and an algorithm that checks whether a given 3-manifold contains a totally geodesic surface. We applied our algorithm on over 150,000 3-manifolds and discovered nine 3-manifolds with totally geodesic surfaces. Additionally, we verified Menasco-Reid's conjecture for knots up to 12 crossings.

Abstract:In this paper, we first set up an alternative fundamental theory of Möbius geometry for any umbilic-free spacelike hypersurfaces in four dimensional Lorentzian space form, and prove the hypersurfaces can be determined completely by a system consisting of a function W and a tangent frame { E i }. Then we give a complete classification for spacelike Möbius homogeneous hypersurfaces in four dimensional Lorentzian space form. They are either Möbius equivalent to spacelike Dupin hypersurfaces or to some cylinders constructed from logarithmic curves and hyperbolic logarithmic spirals. Some of them have parallel para-Blaschke tensors with non-vanishing Möbius form.
Envelopes of Horospheres and Weingarten Surfaces in Hyperbolic 3-Space

Abstract:We derive basic differential geometric formulae for surfaces in hyperbolic space represented as envelopes of horospheres. The dual notion of parallel hypersurfaces is also studied. The representation is applied to prove existence and regularity theorems for Weingarten surfaces in H^3, which satisfy (1-a)K = a(2-H), for an a < 0, and have a specified boundary curve at infinity. These surfaces are shown to be closely connected to conformal mappings of domains in S^2 into the unit disk and provide Riemannian interpretations for some conformal invariants associated to such mappings.

Abstract:Abstract We study entire spacelike constant mean curvature hypersurfaces in Anti-de Sitter space of any dimension. First, we give a classification result with respect to their asymptotic boundary, namely we show that every admissible sphere $\Lambda $ is the boundary of a unique such hypersurface, for any given value $H$ of the mean curvature. We also demonstrate that, as $H$ varies in $\mathbb {R}$, these hypersurfaces analytically foliate the invisible domain of $\Lambda $. Finally, we extend Cheng-Yau Theorem to the Anti-de Sitter space, which establishes the completeness of any entire constant mean curvature hypersurface.
