Abstract:We use arithmetic and Hodge-theoretic techniques to study pencils of Calabi-Yau varieties realized as highly symmetric hypersurfaces in Grassmannians and their quotients, demonstrating that their geometric properties are distinct from the classical mirrors of Calabi-Yau Grassmannian hypersurfaces.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the deformation of highly symmetric Calabi - Yau Grassmannian hypersurfaces and the verification of their mirror symmetry. Specifically, the authors use arithmetic and Hodge - theoretic techniques to study the topological and arithmetic properties of highly symmetric Calabi - Yau hypersurface families (called arrow pencils) realized in the Grassmannian \(G(r,n)\), and compare them with the mirror constructions of classical Calabi - Yau Grassmannian hypersurfaces. The main purpose is to show how these geometric properties differ from the classical mirror and to gather evidence regarding geometric mirror symmetry proposals by experimental methods. The key points of the paper include: - **Research Object**: Highly symmetric Calabi - Yau Grassmannian hypersurfaces and their deformations. - **Research Method**: Use arithmetic and Hodge - theoretic techniques, combined with computational methods to analyze the intermediate cohomology and period deformations of these hypersurfaces. - **Main Findings**: The period behavior of arrow pencils is more complex than the mirror of classical Grassmannian hypersurfaces, even for very small \(r\) and \(n\). In addition, arrow pencils can be naturally extended to multi - parameter Calabi - Yau hypersurface families. - **Counterexample**: Through specific calculations and analyses, the authors provide counterexamples to prove that the Coates - Doran - Kalashnikov mirror proposal does not hold for Calabi - Yau hypersurfaces in \(G(2,4)\) and \(G(2,5)\). ### Main Theorem The main theorem of the paper describes a subspace in the intermediate cohomology of certain highly symmetric Calabi - Yau three - fold Grassmannian pencils, which is fixed by the Coates - Doran - Kalashnikov group action: **Main Theorem**: Let \(Z_{2,4}^t\) be any one of the following \(H_{4,2}\)-invariant Calabi - Yau three - fold pencils in the Grassmannian \(G(2,4)\): \[ t\left(p_1^4+\cdots + p_{34}^4\right)+p_{12}p_{23}p_{34}p_{14} = 0 \] \[ t\left(p_1^4+\cdots + p_{34}^4+p_{14}^2p_{23}^2+p_{13}^2p_{24}^2+p_{12}^2p_{34}^2\right)+p_{12}p_{14}p_{23}p_{34}=0 \] \[ t\left(p_1^4+\cdots + p_{34}^4+p_{13}p_{14}p_{23}p_{24}+p_{12}p_{13}p_{24}p_{34}\right)+p_{12}p_{14}p_{23}p_{34}=0 \] \[ t\left(p_1^4+\cdots + p_{34}^4+p_{14}^2p_{23}^2+p_{13}p_{14}p_{23}p_{24}+p_{13}^2p_{24}^2+p_{12}p_{13}p_{24}p_{34}+p_{12}^2p_{34}^2\right)+p_{12}p_{14}p_{23}p_{34}=0 \] Then \((H^{2,1}(Z_{2,4}^t))^{H_{4,2}}\) is a 5 - dimensional vector space. ### Counterexample The paper also provides specific counterexamples to prove that the Coates - Doran - Kalashnikov mirror proposal does not hold in \(G(2,4)\) and \(G(2,5)\): **Counterexample 1.1**: Describe the Calabi - Yau variety \(Y_{
