Abstract:We study hypersurfaces of the four‐dimensional Thurston geometry Sol04 , which is a Riemannian homogeneous space and a solvable Lie group. In particular, we give a full classification of hypersurfaces whose second fundamental form is a Codazzi tensor—including totally geodesic hypersurfaces and hypersurfaces with parallel second fundamental form—and of totally umbilical hypersurfaces of Sol04 . We also give a closed expression for the Riemann curvature tensor of Sol04 , using two integrable complex structures.

Abstract:We show that a simply connected Riemannian homogeneous space M which admits a totally geodesic hypersurface F is isometric to either (a) the Riemannian product of a space of constant curvature and a homogeneous space, or (b) the warped product of the Euclidean space and a homogeneous space, or (c) the twisted product of the line and a homogeneous space (with the warping/twisting function given explicitly). In the first case, F is also a Riemannian product; in the last two cases, it is a leaf of a totally geodesic homogeneous fibration. Case (c) can alternatively be characterised by the fact that M admits a Riemannian submersion onto the universal cover of the group SL(2) equipped with a particular left-invariant metric, and F is the preimage of the two-dimensional solvable totally geodesic subgroup.

Totally Geodesic Surfaces in Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds: Algorithms and Examples

Abstract:Finding a totally geodesic surface, an embedded surface where the geodesics in the surface are also geodesics in the surrounding manifold, has been a problem of interest in the study of 3-manifolds. This has especially been of interest in hyperbolic 3-manifolds and knot complements, complements of piecewise-linearly embedded circles in the 3-sphere. This is due to Menasco-Reid's conjecture stating that hyperbolic knot complements do not contain such surfaces. Here, we present an algorithm that determines whether a given surface is totally geodesic and an algorithm that checks whether a given 3-manifold contains a totally geodesic surface. We applied our algorithm on over 150,000 3-manifolds and discovered nine 3-manifolds with totally geodesic surfaces. Additionally, we verified Menasco-Reid's conjecture for knots up to 12 crossings.

Abstract:In this article we classify totally geodesic submanifolds of homogeneous nearly Kähler 6-manifolds, and of the G2-cones over these 6-manifolds. To this end, we develop new techniques for the study of totally geodesic submanifolds of analytic Riemannian manifolds, naturally reductive homogeneous spaces and Riemannian cones. In particular, we obtain an example of a totally geodesic submanifold with self-intersections in a simply connected homogeneous space.

Abstract:We study metric teleparallel geometries, which can either be defined through a Lorentzian metric and flat, metric-compatible affine connection, or a tetrad and a flat spin connection, which are invariant under the transitive action of a four-dimensional Lie group on their spatial equal-time hypersurfaces. There are three such group actions, and their corresponding spatial hypersurfaces belong to the Bianchi types II, III and IX, respectively. For each of these three symmetry groups, we determine the most general teleparallel geometry, and find that it is parametrized by six functions of time, one of which can be eliminated by the choice of the time coordinate. We further show that these geometries are unique up to global Lorentz transformations, coordinate transformations and changes of the choice of the parameter functions.

Abstract:Theories of gravity based on teleparallel geometries are characterized by the torsion, which is a function of the coframe, derivatives of the coframe, and a zero curvature and metric compatible spin connection. The appropriate notion of a symmetry in a teleparallel geometry is that of an affine symmetry. Due to the importance of the de Sitter geometry and Einstein spaces within general relativity, we shall describe teleparallel de Sitter geometries and discuss their possible generalizations. In particular, we shall analyse a class of Einstein teleparallel geometries which have a 4-dimensional Lie algebra of affine symmetries, and display two one-parameter families of explicit exact solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, we study Lagrangian submanifolds of the pseudo‐nearly Kähler SL(2,R)×SL(2,R) . First, we show that they split into four different classes depending on their behavior with respect to a certain almost product structure on the ambient space. Then, we give a complete classification of totally geodesic Lagrangian submanifolds of this space.

Abstract:This thesis mainly treats two developments of the classical theory of hypersurfaces inside pseudo-Riemannian space forms. The former - a joint work with Francesco Bonsante - consists in the study of immersions of smooth manifolds into holomorphic Riemannian space forms of constant curvature -1 (including SL(2,C) with a multiple of its Killing form): this leads to a Gauss-Codazzi theorem, it suggests an approach to holomorphic transitioning of immersions into pseudo-Riemannian space forms, a trick to construct holomorphic maps into the PSL(2,C)-character variety, and leads to a restatement of Bers theorem. The latter - a joint work with Andrea Seppi - consists in the study of immersions of n-manifolds inside the space of geodesics of the hyperbolic (n+1)-space. We give a characterization, in terms of the para-Sasaki structure of this space of geodesics, of the Riemannian immersions which turn out to be Gauss maps of equivariant immersions into the hyperbolic space.
Envelopes of Horospheres and Weingarten Surfaces in Hyperbolic 3-Space

Abstract:We derive basic differential geometric formulae for surfaces in hyperbolic space represented as envelopes of horospheres. The dual notion of parallel hypersurfaces is also studied. The representation is applied to prove existence and regularity theorems for Weingarten surfaces in H^3, which satisfy (1-a)K = a(2-H), for an a < 0, and have a specified boundary curve at infinity. These surfaces are shown to be closely connected to conformal mappings of domains in S^2 into the unit disk and provide Riemannian interpretations for some conformal invariants associated to such mappings.

Abstract:We study two classes of quantum spheres and hyperboloids, one class consisting of homogeneous spaces, which are -quantum spaces for the quantum orthogonal group . We construct line bundles over the quantum homogeneous space associated with the quantum subgroup SO (2) of . The line bundles are associated to the quantum principal bundle via representations of SO (2) and are described dually by finitely-generated projective modules of rank 1 and of degree computed to be an even integer . The corresponding idempotents, that represent classes in the K-theory of the base space, are explicitly worked out and are paired with two suitable Fredhom modules that compute the rank and the degree of the bundles. For q real, we show how to diagonalise the action (on the base space algebra) of the Casimir operator of the Hopf algebra which is dual to .

Complete totally geodesic subsets of the complex hyperbolic plane: an elementary classification

Abstract:The non-trivial complete totally geodesic submanifolds of the complex hyperbolic plane $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ are the complex geodesics and the real planes. We present two new proofs for this fact. One is a short proof based on an algebraic formula for the Riemann curvature tensor due to S. Anan'in and C. Grossi and resembles the traditional proof using Lie theory. The other is purely elementary and geometric, relying on the structures in $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ instead of general theories. In this second approach, we prove a slightly stronger result: the only non-trivial complete totally geodesic subsets of $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ are the complex geodesics and the real planes without assuming that the subsets are submanifolds a priori. This second proof is also intriguing for only making use of elementary geometric constructions.

On geodesic embeddings of hyperbolic surfaces into hyperbolic 3-manifolds

Abstract:We consider the problem of when a closed orientable hyperbolic surface admits a totally geodesic embedding into a closed orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold; given a finite isometric group action on the surface, we consider in particular equivariant versions of such an embedding. We prove that an equivariant embedding exists for all finite irreducible group actions on surfaces; such surfaces are known also as quasiplatonic surfaces; in particular, all quasiplatonic surfaces embed geodesically. In the last section, we discuss some cases of more general finite group actions on surfaces.

Abstract:Motivated by the thermodynamics of black hole solutions conformal to stationary solutions, we study the geometric invariant theory of null hypersurfaces. It is well-known that a null hypersurface in a Lorentzian manifold can be treated as a Carrollian geometry. Additional structure can be added to this geometry by choosing a connection which yields a Carrollian manifold. In the literature various authors have introduced Koszul connections to study the study the physics on these hypersurfaces. In this paper we examine the various Carrollian geometries and their relationship to null hypersurface embeddings. We specify the geometric data required to construct a rigid Carrollian geometry, and we argue that a connection with torsion is the most natural object to study Carrollian manifolds. We then use this connection to develop a hypersurface calculus suitable for a study of intrinsic and extrinsic differential invariants on embedded null hypersurfaces; motivating examples are given, including geometric invariants preserved under conformal transformations.
