Abstract:This thesis mainly treats two developments of the classical theory of hypersurfaces inside pseudo-Riemannian space forms. The former - a joint work with Francesco Bonsante - consists in the study of immersions of smooth manifolds into holomorphic Riemannian space forms of constant curvature -1 (including SL(2,C) with a multiple of its Killing form): this leads to a Gauss-Codazzi theorem, it suggests an approach to holomorphic transitioning of immersions into pseudo-Riemannian space forms, a trick to construct holomorphic maps into the PSL(2,C)-character variety, and leads to a restatement of Bers theorem. The latter - a joint work with Andrea Seppi - consists in the study of immersions of n-manifolds inside the space of geodesics of the hyperbolic (n+1)-space. We give a characterization, in terms of the para-Sasaki structure of this space of geodesics, of the Riemannian immersions which turn out to be Gauss maps of equivariant immersions into the hyperbolic space.

Abstract:We study hypersurfaces of the four‐dimensional Thurston geometry Sol04 , which is a Riemannian homogeneous space and a solvable Lie group. In particular, we give a full classification of hypersurfaces whose second fundamental form is a Codazzi tensor—including totally geodesic hypersurfaces and hypersurfaces with parallel second fundamental form—and of totally umbilical hypersurfaces of Sol04 . We also give a closed expression for the Riemann curvature tensor of Sol04 , using two integrable complex structures.

Abstract:We show that a simply connected Riemannian homogeneous space M which admits a totally geodesic hypersurface F is isometric to either (a) the Riemannian product of a space of constant curvature and a homogeneous space, or (b) the warped product of the Euclidean space and a homogeneous space, or (c) the twisted product of the line and a homogeneous space (with the warping/twisting function given explicitly). In the first case, F is also a Riemannian product; in the last two cases, it is a leaf of a totally geodesic homogeneous fibration. Case (c) can alternatively be characterised by the fact that M admits a Riemannian submersion onto the universal cover of the group SL(2) equipped with a particular left-invariant metric, and F is the preimage of the two-dimensional solvable totally geodesic subgroup.

Abstract:The aim of the paper is to present two results concerning real hypersurfaces in the six-dimensional sphere S6(1). More precisely, we prove that real hypersurfaces with the Lie-parallel shape operator A must be totally geodesic hyperspheres. Additionally, we classify real hypersurfaces in a nearly Kähler sphere S6(1) whose Lie derivative of the shape operator coincides with its covariant derivative.

Abstract:In this paper, regarding the Riemannian product S-2 x S-2 of two unit 2-spheres as a Kahler surface, we study its real hypersurfaces with typical geometric properties. First, we classify the real hypersurfaces of S-2 x S-2 with isometric Reeb flow and then, by using a Simons' type inequality, a characterization of these compact real hypersurfaces is provided. Next, we classify Hopf hypersurfaces of S-2 x S-2 with constant product angle function. Finally, we classify Hopf hypersurfaces of S-2 x S-2 with parallel Ricci tensor.

Abstract:In this paper, we classify the hypersurfaces of 𝕊^2×𝕊^2 with constant sectional curvature. We prove that the constant sectional curvature can only be 1/2 . We show that any such hypersurface is a parallel hypersurface of a minimal hypersurface in 𝕊^2×𝕊^2 , and we establish a one-to-one correspondence between such minimal hypersurface and the solution to the famous “sinh-Gordon equation” ( ∂ ^2/∂ u^2+∂ ^2/∂ v^2) h =-1√(2)sinh( √(2)h) .

Abstract:We show that every regular domain $\mathcal D$ in Minkowski space $\mathbb R^{n,1}$ which is not a wedge admits an entire hypersurface whose domain of dependence is $\mathcal D$ and whose scalar curvature is a prescribed constant (or function, under suitable hypotheses) in $(-\infty,0)$. Under rather general assumptions, these hypersurfaces are unique and provide foliations of $\mathcal D$. As an application, we show that every maximal globally hyperbolic Cauchy compact flat spacetime admits a foliation by hypersurfaces of constant scalar curvature, generalizing to any dimension previous results of Barbot-Béguin-Zeghib (for $n=2$) and Smith (for $n=3$).

Abstract:Abstract We study entire spacelike constant mean curvature hypersurfaces in Anti-de Sitter space of any dimension. First, we give a classification result with respect to their asymptotic boundary, namely we show that every admissible sphere $\Lambda $ is the boundary of a unique such hypersurface, for any given value $H$ of the mean curvature. We also demonstrate that, as $H$ varies in $\mathbb {R}$, these hypersurfaces analytically foliate the invisible domain of $\Lambda $. Finally, we extend Cheng-Yau Theorem to the Anti-de Sitter space, which establishes the completeness of any entire constant mean curvature hypersurface.

Complete totally geodesic subsets of the complex hyperbolic plane: an elementary classification

Abstract:The non-trivial complete totally geodesic submanifolds of the complex hyperbolic plane $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ are the complex geodesics and the real planes. We present two new proofs for this fact. One is a short proof based on an algebraic formula for the Riemann curvature tensor due to S. Anan'in and C. Grossi and resembles the traditional proof using Lie theory. The other is purely elementary and geometric, relying on the structures in $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ instead of general theories. In this second approach, we prove a slightly stronger result: the only non-trivial complete totally geodesic subsets of $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ are the complex geodesics and the real planes without assuming that the subsets are submanifolds a priori. This second proof is also intriguing for only making use of elementary geometric constructions.

Abstract:In this paper, we study hypersurfaces $M_{r}^{4}$ $(r=0, 1, 2, 3, 4)$ satisfying $\triangle \vec{H}=\lambda \vec{H}$ ($\lambda$ a constant) in the pseudo-Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}_{s}^{5}$ $(s=0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)$. We obtain that every such hypersurface in $\mathbb{E}_{s}^{5}$ with diagonal shape operator has constant mean curvature, constant norm of second fundamental form and constant scalar curvature. Also, we prove that every biharmonic hypersurface in $\mathbb{E}_{s}^{5}$ with diagonal shape operator must be minimal.

Abstract:In this article spacelike hypersurfaces immersed in twisted product spacetimes $I\times_f F$ with complete fiber are studied. Several conditions ensuring global hyperbolicity are presented, as well as a relation that needs to hold on each spacelike hypersurface in $I\times_f F$ for it to be a simple warped product. When the fiber is assumed to be closed (compact and without boundary) and the ambient spacetime has a suitable expanding behaviour, non-existence results for constant mean curvature hypersurfaces are obtained. Under the same hypothesis, a characterization of compact maximal hypersurfaces and other for totally umbilic ones with a suitable restriction on their mean curvature are presented. The description of maximal hypersurfaces in twisted product spacetimes of the form $I\,{ }_{f}\!\!\times F$ with a one-dimensional Lorentzian fiber is also included. Finally, the mean curvature equation for a spacelike graph on the fiber is computed and as an application, some Calabi-Bernstein-type results are proven. We also include in an Appendix some known conformal geometry results describing the transformation of relevant tensors and operators under the action of a conformal map in a pseudo-Riemannian background.

Totally Geodesic Surfaces in Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds: Algorithms and Examples

Abstract:Finding a totally geodesic surface, an embedded surface where the geodesics in the surface are also geodesics in the surrounding manifold, has been a problem of interest in the study of 3-manifolds. This has especially been of interest in hyperbolic 3-manifolds and knot complements, complements of piecewise-linearly embedded circles in the 3-sphere. This is due to Menasco-Reid's conjecture stating that hyperbolic knot complements do not contain such surfaces. Here, we present an algorithm that determines whether a given surface is totally geodesic and an algorithm that checks whether a given 3-manifold contains a totally geodesic surface. We applied our algorithm on over 150,000 3-manifolds and discovered nine 3-manifolds with totally geodesic surfaces. Additionally, we verified Menasco-Reid's conjecture for knots up to 12 crossings.
