Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials have attracted significant attention for device applications because of their unique structures and outstanding properties. Here, a field-effect transistor (FET) sensor device is fabricated based on 2D phosphorene nanosheets (PNSs). The PNS sensor exhibits an ultrahigh sensitivity to NO 2 in dry air and the sensitivity is dependent on its thickness. A maximum response is observed for 4.8-nm-thick PNS, with a sensitivity up to 190% at 20 parts per billion (p.p.b.) at room temperature. First-principles calculations combined with the statistical thermodynamics modelling predict that the adsorption density is ∼10 15 cm −2 for the 4.8-nm-thick PNS when exposed to 20 p.p.b. NO 2 at 300 K. Our sensitivity modelling further suggests that the dependence of sensitivity on the PNS thickness is dictated by the band gap for thinner sheets (<10 nm) and by the effective thickness on gas adsorption for thicker sheets (>10 nm).
Zinc oxide-black phosphorus composites for ultrasensitive nitrogen dioxide sensing

Abstract:Multi-layer black phosphorus (m-BP) has been successfully incorporated in zinc oxide (ZnO) hollow spheres, thus forming hetero-structured ZnO-BP composites; a study performed on their properties reveals that the BP environmental stability can be significantly enhanced by the introduction of ZnO, and the sensors based on ZnO-BP composites exhibit high response, fast response behavior, outstanding selectivity, and ultralow detection limit of 1 ppb towards NO2 gas molecules. The ultrasensitive sensing performance is suggested to be due to the large surface area, excellent carrier mobility, and enhanced charge transfer of ZnO-BP in the presence of BP. Moreover, the mechanism of NO2 sensing with ZnO-BP is confirmed by the calculations obtained from the first-principle studies.
Sub-ppb-Level Detection of Nitrogen Dioxide Based on High-Quality Black Phosphorus

Abstract:The development of gas sensors based on two-dimensional (2D) layered materials has received lots of focus attributing to their excellent gas sensitivity. Here, a black phosphorus (BP) gas sensor device is fabricated based on high-quality few-layered BP microribbons using a facile route. Although BP is well known to oxidize in ambient conditions, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) mapping manifests that the few-layered BP microribbons undergo slight oxidation and contamination during the grinding process. It is interesting that the surface and side of BP microribbons have nanoscale thin films and step-like nanoscale thin films, respectively, owing to the in-plane slip of the few-layered BP microribbons in the process of grinding, which are different from the conventional BP bulk crystals. The layered BP microribbon gas sensor demonstrated a high response to low-concentration NO2 and a very low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.4 ppb of NO2 under N2 and air conditions, which is the lowest LOD for NO2 detection reported so far. The mechanisms for excellently sensitive detection of NO2 for the BP microribbons have been investigated by first-principles calculations combined with experiment results, revealing that the sensitization mechanisms of the BP microribbon sensor are abundant nanoscale thin films, an optimum bandgap range with optimal carrier concentration, a hierarchical homojunction structure, and strong adsorption energy to NO2. In addition, the BP microribbon sensor demonstrated high selectivity to NO2, a low LOD under a high relative humidity, and good repeatability. Monolayer PtTe2: A promising candidate for NO2 sensor with ultrahigh sensitivity and selectivity

Abstract:Platinum-chalcogen compounds such as platinum dichalcogenides (e.g., PtS2 and PtTe2) have been explored in an effort to study their potential applications in different fields to reduce the use of precious Pt. Herein, the adsorption of NO2, NO, NH3, H2O, CO2, CO and CH4 on monolayer PtTe2 is investigated by using first-principles calculations to exploit its potential applications as gas sensor. Among these gas molecules, only NO2 molecule could be adsorbed on PtTe2 with suitable adsorption strength and apparent charge transfer of 0.4506 e. We further calculate the current-voltage (I–V) relation using the nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) method. The transport feature exhibits distinct responses with a dramatic change of I–V relation before and after NO2 adsorption on monolayer PtTe2: an obvious increase of 259 % in current after NO2 adsorption when the applied voltage is 0.98 V. The findings suggest that monolayer PtTe2 is a promising candidate for the NO2 molecule sensor with high selectivity and sensitivity.

Abstract:Motivated by the development of high-performance gas sensors using two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, herein using the combination methods of density functional theory (DFT) and nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF), the structural, electronic, transport, and gas sensing properties of the B3C2P3 monolayer adsorbed with various gases (NO2, NO, NH3, SO2, H2S, CO2, CO, H2O, O2 and CH2O) have been systematically studied. The NO2 (or NO) molecules were chemically adsorbed (or strong physisorbed) on the B3C2P3 monolayer, while other molecules were weak-physically adsorbed on the substrate. Furthermore, only the NO2 and NO adsorption results in the remarkable change in electronic properties of B3C2P3. The transport properties such as current-voltage (I–V) characteristics and transmission functions indicate the B3C2P3 monolayer is highly sensitive and selective towards NO2 and NO gases. The recovery times of NO2 and NO were calculated to be 2.27 and 0.0785 ms at 300 K, indicating the reusability of the B3C2P3-based NO2 (NO) sensors. The existence of moisture hardly influences the adsorption of NO and NO2 on the B3C2P3 monolayer. Our results indicated that the B3C2P3 monolayer, as a room-temperature reusable gas sensor, is highly sensitive and selective for NO2 and NO detection regardless of the existence of moisture, O2 and CO2.

Abstract:Rapid detection of toxic gases is a crucial and challenging task for industrial production and disease detection. In this work, the B3C2P3 monolayer is found to be an excellent NH3, NO2 and NO sensing material by first-principles calculations. Our results reveal that B3C2P3 exhibits chemical adsorption of NH3 and NO2 and strong physical adsorption of NO, with adsorption energies (Eads ) of −0.37 eV, −0.47 eV and −0.22 eV, respectively. Notably, B3C2P3 shows negligible adsorption strength towards gases such as CO, CO2, H2O, H2S, CH4, N2 and O2 (Eads > -0.17 eV). The calculated current–voltage curves possess a significant response of B3C2P3 after adsorption of NH3, NO2 and NO and the current value increasing by 3.5, 8.8, and 4.7 folds at the voltage of 0.7 V, respectively. Furthermore, the recovery times of the three gases on the B3C2P3 surface are less than 8.15 μs at room temperature. Additionally, it is found that the adsorption energy of NH3 on B3C2P3 can be easily regulated by applying strain, which implies that the capture/releases process is reversible. Based on these findings, we propose that B3C2P3 is a promising material for sensing or capturing N-containing gases with high sensitivity, selectivity and reversibility.

Abstract:The sensing properties of monolayer tin selenium (SnSe) for CO, CO2, NH3, H2O, and NO2 gas molecules are theoretically investigated by the first-principle calculation based on density functional theory. The adsorption energy, equilibrium distance, and Mulliken charge transfer are calculated to evaluate the adsorption properties of the SnSe monolayer for these gas molecules. All the molecules show physisorption nature on the SnSe monolayer. The results demonstrate that SnSe is sensitive to NO2 gas molecules with moderate adsorption energy and superior charge transfer. Furthermore, only the adsorption of NO2 can modify the densities of states of SnSe near the Fermi level. The current-voltage (I-V) curves reveal that the conductivity of the SnSe monolayer is distinctly increased after NO2 adsorption. The recovery time of the SnSe sensor at T = 300 K is estimated to be quite short for NO2, which satisfies the demand of sustainable use. Therefore, our results can provide a theoretical basis for the potential applications of monolayer SnSe in NO2 detecting at room temperature.

Abstract:Two-dimensional transition metal disulfides(TMDs) has attracted considerable attention on gas sensor due to its excellent physicochemical properties. But the disadvantage is that the interaction between TMDs and gas is too weak, so that the response of sensor is difficult to be detected.In this study, the sensing ability of single-layer P and N atom doped WSe2 for common gases have been evaluated, including CO, SO2, H2O, NH3 and NO2.The molecular model of the adsorption systems is established, and the changes of electronic structure and adsorption behavior of the gas after doping are discussed from the binding energy, adsorption energy, band structure and density of states (DOS) by using density functional theory (DFT).The results show that dopants can improve the adsorption strength between gas molecules and substrates, among which the adsorption effect of NO2 gas molecule is the best, and the adsorption energy of WSe2 doped with single-layer P atoms is the largest.The calculation also shows that the P and N atom doped system has shorter adsorption distance and more charge transfer than the single-layer pristine WSe2.It can be inferred that single-layer N-doped WSe2 can be used as an effective, potential and highly selective NO2 gas sensor.

Abstract:In2O3 nanorods were successfully incorporated by different amount of multi-layer black phosphorus (m-BP), forming the hetero-structured BP-In2O3 composites. The structure, morphology and composition of the as-synthesized composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Interestingly, the environmental stability of BP can be notably improved by the introduction of In2O3. Moreover, NO2 sensing properties of BP-In2O3 composites were tested at room temperature (25 degrees C) with relative humidity of 30%. It is demonstrated that the sensor based on BP-In2O3 composites exhibits high response, lower detect limit, short response-recovery time and outstanding selectivity at room temperature. Such sensing behavior can be attributed to high adsorption capacity to NO2, large surface area, excellent carrier mobility of BP-In2O3 in presence of BP, as well as high concentration of chemisorbed oxygen on the In2O3 surface derived from electrons transfer from BP to In2O3.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) phthalocyanine-based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) provide an ideal platform for efficient and rapid gas sensing—this can be attributed to their regular structure, moderate conductivity, and a large number of scalable metal active centers. However, there remains a need to explore structural modification strategies for optimizing the sluggish desorption process caused by the extensive porosity and strong adsorption effect of metal sites. Herein, we reported a 2D bimetallic phthalocyanine-based COF (COF-CuNiPc) as chemiresistive gas sensors that exhibited a high gas-sensing performance to nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Bimetallic COF-CuNiPc with an asymmetric synergistic effect achieves a fast adsorption/desorption process to NO2. It is demonstrated that the COF-CuNiPc can detect 50 ppb NO2 with a recovery time of 7 s assisted by ultraviolet illumination. Compared with single-metal phthalocyanine-based COFs (COF-CuPc and COF-NiPc), the bimetallic structure of COF-CuNiPc can provide a proper band gap to interact with NO2 gas molecules. The CuNiPc heterometallic active site expands the overlap of d-orbitals, and the optimized electronic arrangement accelerates the adsorption/desorption processes. The concept of a synergistic effect enabled by bimetallic phthalocyanines in this work can provide an innovative direction to design high-performance chemiresistive gas sensors.

Abstract:Rapid and ultrasensitive detection of toxic gases at room temperature is highly desired in health protection but presents grand challenges in the sensing materials reported so far. Here, we present a gas sensor based on novel zero dimensional (0D)/two dimensional (2D) indium oxide (In2O3)/titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) Schottky heterostructures with a high surface area and rich oxygen vacancies for parts per billion (ppb) level nitrogen dioxide (NO2) detection at room temperature. The In2O3/Ti3C2Tx gas sensor exhibits a fast response time (4 s), good response (193.45% to 250 ppb NO2), high selectivity, and excellent cycling stability. The rich surface oxygen vacancies play the role of active sites for the adsorption of NO2 molecules, and the Schottky junctions effectively adjust the charge-transfer behavior through the conduction tunnel in the sensing material. Furthermore, In2O3 nanoparticles almost fully cover the Ti3C2Tx nanosheets which can avoid the oxidation of Ti3C2Tx, thus contributing to the good cycling stability of the sensing materials. This work sheds light on the sensing mechanism of heterojunction nanostructures and provides an efficient pathway to construct high-performance gas sensors through the rational design of active sites.
Highly sensitive NO2 response and abnormal P-N sensing transition with ultrathin Mo-doped SnS2 nanosheets

Abstract:Sensing of Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is of great importance for its pernicious and destructive impacts to both human health and nature environment. However, it still remains challenging to achieve the NO2 detection with fast response, high sensitivity and good selectivity. In this work, two-dimensional (2D) ultrathin n-type SnS2 nanosheets with Mo doping have been synthesized via a simple single-step solvothermal method and exploited for NO2 sensing application. Phase and structural analyses confirm the homogeneous cation alloying of Mo (1% ~ 10%) in the SnS2. It is indicated that the Mo doping can elegantly tune the electronic structure of SnS2 and promote the sensing process with negative adsorption energy. Especially for 3%Mo-SnS2 nanosheet, the NO2 sensing response at 150 ℃ has been enhanced around 23 times relative to the un-doped SnS2 sample, together with fast sensing kinetics and good NO2 selectivity. Interestingly, the n-type SnS2-based sensor shows an abnormal response characteristic for the first time with resistance decrease at low NO2 concentration, behaving like a p-type semiconductor. The P-N sensing transition can be regulated by varying the operation temperature and NO2 concentration. Mechanisms for the enhanced sensing and abnormal phenomena are well explained based on density function theory calculations. Such P-N sensing switch in a single sensor here opens up interesting possibilities for the highly sensitive and selective detection of NO2 with 2D metal dichalcogenides.

Abstract:Monolayer palladium diselenide (PdSe2) has attracted increasing attention due to its outstanding physicochemical properties and puckered pentagonal layered structure. In this study, the adsorption of nitrogen-containing gases on the surface of monolayer PdSe2 has been investigated by first-principles calculations to fully explore its gas-sensing capability. It is found that NH3 and N2O show physisorption, while NO2 and NO prefer chemisorption, indicating excellent selectivity of monolayer PdSe2. Furthermore, the NH3 and N2O (NO2 and NO) adsorption exhibits a negligible (significant) amount of charge transfer, which in turn leads to a tiny (considerable) change in the electronic structure and magnetic property of the adsorbent surface. In particular, the adsorption of NO2 and NO introduces additional states around the Fermi level, which induces a dramatic decrease of the band gap and appearance of magnetic moments, and further leads to a huge change of the electrical conductivity of monolayer PdSe2. Additionally, the recovery time of the PdSe2 sensor at room temperature is estimated to be considerably short for NO2 and NO. Overall, the present work reveals that two-dimensional monolayer PdSe2 can be used as a promising reusable sensing material featured with high selectivity and excellent sensitivity for environmentally hazardous gas molecules.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted widespread attention because of their excellent optical and electrical properties and have been extensively studied as gas sensors. A new type of 2D material, the B 2 CO monolayer, has recently been reported to possess significant structural, energetic, and thermodynamic stability. In this study, density functional theory (DFT) was used to explore the sensing properties of CO, CO 2 , NH 3 , NO, and NO 2 gas molecules on the B 2 CO monolayer. After adsorption, the NH 3 , NO, and NO 2 molecules formed chemical bonds with the B 2 CO monolayer. Among these, the NO 2 molecule has the highest muscular adsorption energy in the B 2 CO monolayer. Based on electronic analysis, the B 2 CO monolayer can provide robust electron interactions with NO and NO 2 molecules. Furthermore, the simulated current–voltage curves showed that the increasing amplitude of the current response for the adsorption of the NO 2 molecule is more significant than that for NO. Thus, the calculated sensitivity for the NO 2 molecules was much higher than that for the NO molecules in the B 2 CO monolayer. Based on these results, we predict that the B 2 CO monolayer will have a much higher sensing performance for detecting nitrogen-containing gases (NCGs) molecules than CO and CO 2 molecules, especially NO 2 molecules.

N-Doped Carbon Dots/Sns2 Heterostructures for Ultra-Fast and Sub-Ppb-Level Detection of No2 in Multiple Environments

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) 2 ) is one of the most common toxic gases, which not only impairs human health but also produces secondary pollutants induced by sunlight via associated photochemical reactions. Herein, we design a high-performance NO2 2 sensor based on the N-doped carbon dots/SnS2 2 (N-CDs/SnS2) 2 ) heterostructure using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The DFT results approve that the decoration of N-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) onto the SnS2 2 nanosheet enhances adsorption capacity and electron transportation compared with those of pure SnS2, 2 , significantly enhancing the sensing responses. In addition, these in-situ synthesized N-CDs onto SnS2 2 nanosheet leads to band alignment, thereby significantly improves conductivity and enhances transportation and storage properties of carriers via a synergistic interaction. Furthermore, employment of UV illumination significantly increases active adsorption sites and enhances response and recovery kinetics. As a result, the developed NO2 2 sensor achieves fast responses of a few seconds and a limit of detection down to sub-ppb-level with the help of UV illumination. It also shows good linearly, operated in both air and oxygen-free environments, at both room or low temperature (238 K) conditions. The developed multi-framework offers an efficient and precision detection of NO2 2 with ultrafast responses and ultralow concentrations in multiple environments.

Abstract:This study aims to develop a newfangled toxic gas (NO and NO 2 ) sensor. The adsorption and gas-sensing performance of toxic gas absorbed on the two-dimension arsenic-phosphorus (α-AsP) monolayer was theoretically researched using the DFT calculations. It is found that α-AsP monolayer has weak adsorption performance, and the single non-metal/metal atom doped AsP systems have weak-physical/strong-chemical adsorption behaviors. However, metallic (Cd, Ag, Au, Pt and Fe) and N co-doped AsP systems exhibit excellent gas sensing performance to NO and NO 2 gases. These adsorption systems exhibit enhanced gas-sensing performance by regulating the adsorption energy between weak physical adsorption and strong chemical adsorption. It is worth mentioning that the sensitivity of NO and NO 2 adsorption on Cd-N co-doped AsP reaches a surprising 94.908% and 78.291%, respectively. Moreover, we predicted that the CdN-AsP system is suitable for NO and NO 2 gas-sensing under multiple gas environment by comparing the selectivity, electronic and adsorption properties. Our work has provided a critical reference to develop the potential gas sensor for NO and NO 2 detections.

Room-Temperature and Humidity-Resistant Trace Nitrogen Dioxide Sensing of Few-Layer Black Phosphorus Nanosheet by Incorporating Zinc Oxide Nanowire

Abstract:Surmounting the issues of high-sensitivity and room-temperature detection toward trace NO2 gas is of paramount importance in the fields of human health and ultralow emission. Recently, black phosphorus (BP), a novel two-dimensional material, has gained considerable interest to achieve this goal. However, related work is far from satisfactory due to sluggish response, insufficient recovery, and fragile stability. In this scenario, we report on an inspiring NO2 sensor featuring composite film of few-layer BP nanosheets and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires serving as the sensing layer. Compared with BP-only counterpart, BP-ZnO sensor exhibited enhanced performance including boosted response (74% vs. 37.7% toward 50 ppb, which was among the best performances of BP involved NO2 sensors), accelerated response speed, better long-term stability, and strengthened humidity-repelling properties. In addition, excellent selectivity toward trace NO2 gas was revealed. These improvements could be ascribed into porous film, abundant sorption sites, numerous p-n heterojunctions, and passivation effect of ZnO nanowires on BP nanosheets. Furthermore, the proposed basic-solution assisted BP exfoliation favored film deposition, and enabled versatile composition design involving BP nanosheets in the future. In brief, the as-prepared BP-ZnO NO2 sensors paved the avenue for further BP applications and enriched its underlying transduction mechanism in gas sensing.
