Abstract:Nanoparticles (NPs) with high uniformity have been extensively investigated for their excellent chemical stability. Near-monodisperse globular MoS2 NPs were prepared with sulphur powders (SPs) as a sulphur source by a one-pot polyol-mediated process without surfactants, transfer agents and toxic agents at 170-190 degrees C. The as-processed SPs greatly affected the formation of the MoS2 NPs after low-activity sulphur (S-8)(n) was reassembled from common SPs (S-8). The average size of MoS2 NPs can be reduced remarkably from 100-200 nm to 50 nm by introducing low amounts of MnCl2. A preliminary four-step growth mechanism based on the aggregation-coalescence model was also proposed. This green and simple method may be an alternative to the common hot-injection and heating-up methods for the preparation of monodisperse NPs, particularly transition metal dichalogenides.
Facile Synthesis of Size Controllable Dendritic Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles

Abstract:The synthesis of highly uniform mesoporous silica nanospheres (MSNs) with dendritic pore channels, particularly ones with particle sizes below 200 nm, is extremely difficult and remains a grand challenge. By a combined synthetic strategy using imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) with different alkyl lengths as cosurfactants and Pluronic F127 nonionic surfactants as inhibitors of particle growth, the preparation of dendritic MSNs with controlled diameter between 40 and 300 nm was successfully realized. An investigation of dendritic MSNs using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nitrogen physisorption revealed that the synthesis of dendritic MSNs at larger size (100-300 nm) strongly depends on the alkyl lengths of cationic imidazolium ILs; while the average size of dendritic MSNs can be controlled within the range of 40-100 nm by varying the amount of Pluronic F127. The Au@MSNs can be used as a catalyst for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol by NaBH4 into 4-aminophenol and exhibit excellent catalytic performance. The present discovery of the extended synthesis conditions offers reproducible, facile, and large-scale synthesis of the monodisperse spherical MSNs with precise size control and, thus, has vast prospects for future applications of ultrafine mesostructured nanoparticle materials in catalysis and biomedicine.

Abstract:Single-crystal transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and TMD-based heterojunctions have recently attracted significant research and industrial interest owing to their intriguing optical and electrical properties. However, the lack of a simple, low-cost, environmentally friendly, synthetic method and a poor understanding of the growth mechanism post a huge challenge to implementing TMDs in practical applications. In this work, we developed a novel approach for direct formation of high-quality, monolayer and few-layer MoS2 single crystal domains via a single-step rapid thermal processing of a sandwiched reactor with sulfur and molybdenum (Mo) film in a confined reaction space. An all-solid-phase growth mechanism was proposed and experimentally/theoretically evidenced by analyzing the surface potential and morphology mapping. Compared with the conventional chemical vapor deposition approaches, our method involves no complicated gas-phase reactant transfer or reactions and requires very small amount of solid precursors [e.g., Mo (∼3 μg)], no carrier gas, no pretreatment of the precursor, no complex equipment design, thereby facilitating a simple, low-cost, and environmentally friendly growth. Moreover, we examined the symmetry, defects, and stacking phase in as-grown MoS2 samples using simultaneous second-harmonic-/sum-frequency-generation (SHG/SFG) imaging. For the first time, we observed that the SFG (peak intensity/position) polarization can be used as a sensitive probe to identify the orientation of TMDs' crystallographic axes. Furthermore, we fabricated ferroelectric programmable Schottky junction devices via local domain patterning using the as-grown, single-crystal monolayer MoS2, revealing their great potential in logic and optoelectronic applications. Our strategy thus provides a simple, low-cost, and scalable path toward a wide variety of TMD single crystal growth and novel functional device design.

Abstract:As an important next-generation photoelectric material, the controlled synthesis of two-dimensional molybdenum disulfide (2D MoS2) with high uniformity is imperative. Traditional MoS2 growth methods in the open space usually require a large amount of raw materials and have poor uniformity of growth results. In this paper, we report a space-confined method for uniformly growing large MoS2 flakes on the SiO2/Si substrate. As the precursor film coated on the bottom substrate is restricted in a small confined space between the top and bottom substrates separated by a small spacer, it is efficiently utilized, achieving large MoS2 flakes with good uniformity on the top substrate. By further tuning the content of NaCl catalyst in the precursor, single-layer or multi-layer MoS2 flakes can be obtained in a controlled manner, and well characterized by Raman, XPS, PL and AFM. The uniform distribution of Mo-containing species and its high concentration in the confined space, contributing to the efficient growth of uniform large MoS2 flakes. This research will provide guidance for rational synthesis of 2D MoS2 flakes on dielectric substrates.

Abstract:Large-area fabrication of transition metal dichalcogenides via environmentally friendly and efficient processes has been a long-standing issue in the field of two-dimensional (2D) materials. Here, we report that single- to few-layered MoS2 sheets with an average size of the order of micrometers have been successfully synthesized on an ionic liquid surface by a modified low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LP-CVD) method without the assistance of catalysts. It is found that the MoS2 sheets grown on the liquid substrate exhibit a complete molecular crystal structure, which is confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy, and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy measurements. The interlayer spacing does not change significantly with the increase of the MoS2 layers, corresponding to a layer-by-layer growth pattern. The growth mechanism of the MoS2 sheets is presented according to the experimental results. The work provides a new and simple method of preparing more molecular crystals on liquid substrates and will contribute to further research in this field.

Abstract:Monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), a typical transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD), is a promising functional material for next-generation electronics. However, growing large-domain-sized MoS2 single crystals on SiO2 remains considerably challenging. The amorphous structure and lack of catalytic activity of SiO2 prevent the deposition of a high-quality monolayer MoS2. Herein, a Na-assisted space-confining method is deployed to directly synthesize a MoS2 single-crystal on SiO2. The domain size of MoS2 reaches 450 μm within 3 min, the fastest growth rate reported so far. This highly efficient growth is probably due to two factors: the narrow space between the sodium–calcium glass, and the SiO2 substrate controls the nucleus density; meanwhile, the release of Na from sodium–calcium glass facilitates the rapid formation of large single crystals. These results provide insights into the rapid growth of large-domain-sized TMD single crystals on amorphous substrates.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets have been attracting increasing research interests due to their unique material properties. However, the lack of a reliable large‐scale production method impedes their practical applications. Here a facile, efficient, and scalable method for the fabrication of high‐concentration aqueous dispersion of MoS2 nanosheets using combined grinding and sonication is reported. The 26.7 ± 0.7 mg/mL concentration achieved is the highest concentration in an aqueous solution reported up to now. Grinding generates pure shear forces to detach the MoS2 layers from the bulk materials. Subsequent sonication further breaks larger crystallites into smaller crystallites, which promotes the dispersion of MoS2 nanosheets in ethanol/water solutions. The exfoliation process establishes a new paradigm in the top‐down fabrication of 2D nanosheets in aqueous solution. In the meantime, MoS2‐based sensing film produced using this approach has successfully demonstrated the feasibility of a low‐cost and efficient NH3 gas sensor using inkjet printing as a viable method.

Abstract:Flower-like MoS2 microspheres with high purity were successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal route by adding sodium silicate as an additive. The products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XRD patterns showed that the MoS2 microspheres had good crystallinity with well-stacked layered structure. TEM and SEM images showed that the MoS2 microspheres had uniform sizes with mean diameter about 480 nm and were constructed with MoS2 sheets with thickness of several nanometers. it was found that the possible precursor H4SiMo12O40 obtained by sodium silicate reacting with sodium molybdate played a crucial role in the formation of the flower-like MoS2 microspheres in our experiment. Abstract:In this work, uniform molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)/tungsten disulfide (WS2) quantum dots are synthesized by the combination of sonication and solvothermal treatment of bulk MoS2/WS2 at a mild temperature. The resulting products possess monolayer thickness with an average size about 3 nm. The highly exfoliated and defect‐rich structure renders these quantum dots plentiful active sites for the catalysis of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The MoS2 quantum dots exhibit a small HER overpotential of ≈120 mV and long‐term durability. Moreover, the strong fluorescence, good cell permeability, and low cytotoxicity make them promising and biocompatible probes for in vitro imaging. In addition, this work may provide an alternative facile approach to synthesize the quantum dots of transition metal dichalcogenides or other layered materials on a large scale.

Abstract:High yields of Mo/MoS2 inorganic fullerene-like and actinomorphic nanospheres with a core-shell structure have been successfully synthesized by the one-step reaction of sulfur and molybdenum nanospheres under a hydrogen atmosphere, in which the Mo nanospheres were prepared by the wire electrical explosion method. The shell thickness of MoS2 is about 4-10 nm and exhibit an expansion of about 4.2-1% along the c-axis. Observed from high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images, unreacted molybdenum lying between the (002) layers of MoS2 contributes to the larger expansion besides the strain in the bent layer and the crystal defects; the preferred growth orientations for MoS2 on the surface of Mo have two directions under different annealing temperatures: parallel to the (110) plane of Mo, presenting an actinomorphic phase, and perpendicular or having certain angles to the (110) plane, showing a fullerene-like phase. The actinomorphic Mo/MoS2 can be used for catalysis and intercalation. The fullerene-like phase can be applied as a solid lubricant to enhance the structural rigidity and load bearing capacity of hollow MoS2. In addition, the core-shell nanospheres exhibit a little higher onset temperature and a narrow temperature range against oxidation with a weaker exothermic peak than conventional 2H-MoS2.
Controllable Synthesis of Porous 1T-Mos2 with Large Surface Area Via Continuous Hydrothermal System

Abstract:1T-phase MoS2, a versatile two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenide, is typically synthesized using a one-pot hydrothermal method. However, inadequate control of the sulfurization, reduction, and crystallization processes in the autoclave leads to multilayer 1T-MoS2 with high crystallinity, a small surface area, and few defects. Considering the aforementioned issues, a two-stage microreactor continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis (CHFS) system coupled with accurate control and rapid processing is used to prepare 1T-MoS2 with abundant voids and a large surface area under 250 degrees C and 4.0-4.5 MPa. And density functional theory calculations reveal that nitrogenous species, acting as reductants and electron donors, lower the energy of 1T-MoS2 by intercalation and surface adsorption, facilitating its swift synthesis within the presulfurization stage for 10 min and reduction stage for 24 min. The precisely controlled synthesis of porous 1T-MoS2, originating from prenucleation clusters, results in a large surface area of 201.5 m(2)/g, concentrated mesopores of 2-5 nm, and a pore volume of 0.58 cm(3)/g. Moreover, a significant transformation from the 1T to the 2H phase is prevented by rapid cooling downstream of the CHFS system.
Protocrystallinity of Monodispersed Ultra-Small Templated Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles

Abstract:Monodisperse and semi-faceted ultra-small templated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (US-MSNs) of 20-25 nm were synthesized using short-time hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) at room temperature, followed by a dilution for nucleation quenching. According to dynamic light scattering (DLS), a two-step pH adjustment was necessary for growth termination and colloidal stabilization. The pore size was controlled by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and a tiny amount of neutral surfactant F127 was added to minimize the coalescence between US-MSNs and to favor the transition towards internal ordering. Flocculation eventually occurred, allowing us to harvest a powder by centrifugation (~60% silica yield after one month). Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and 3D high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (3D HR-TEM) images revealed that the US-MSNs are partially ordered. The 2D FT transform images provide evidence for the coexistence of four-, five-, and sixfold patterns characterizing an "on-the-edge" crystallization step between amorphous raspberry and hexagonal pore array morphologies, typical of a protocrystalline state. Calcination preserved this state and yielded a powder characterized by packing, developing a hierarchical porosity centered at 3.9 ± 0.2 (internal pores) and 68 ± 7 nm (packing voids) of high potential for support for separation and catalysis.

Abstract:MoO2 is used as a new source material for the growth of large area and high optical quality monolayer MoS2. However, a systematic study of the growth parameters is still missing and large-area growth of discreet single crystals is still challenging. Hereby, we report the shape evolution of monolayer growth of MoS2 and develop a methodology to achieve centimeter-scaled discrete MoS2 by adopting MoO2 as Mo source material in an atmospheric-pressure chemical vapor deposition process. Our results indicate the growth of monolayer MoS2 could benefit from the precise control of the introduction time of sulfur and the S/MoO2 ratio in experiments. Micro-Raman and photoluminescence spectra confirm the properties of the material. E-beam lithography was utilized to make contact with the as-grown MoS2 located at the selective area. The electrical properties of MoS2 with different morphologies were compared. In the end, the persistent photoconductivity properties of monolayer MoS2 were emphasized and the underlying mechanism was proposed. These studies demonstrate a better understanding of the growth and application of MoS2-based 2D materials.

Abstract:High-quality and large-scale growth of monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has caught intensive attention because of its potential in many applications due to unique electronic properties. Here, we report the wafer-scale growth of high-quality monolayer MoS2 on singlecrystalline sapphire and also on SiO2 substrates by a facile metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) method. Prior to growth, an aqueous solution of sodium molybdate (Na2MoO4) is spun onto the substrates as the molybdenum precursor and diethyl sulfide ((C2H5)2S) is used as the sulfur precursor during the growth. The grown MoS2 films exhibit crystallinity, good electrical performance (electron mobility of 22 cm2·V-1·s-1) and structural continuity maintained over the entire wafer. The sapphire substrates are reusable for subsequent growth. The same method is applied for the synthesis of tungsten disulfide (WS2). Our work provides a facile, reproducible and cost-efficient method for the scalable fabrication of high-quality monolayer MoS2 for versatile applications, such as electronic and optoelectronic devices as well as the membranes for desalination and power generation.

Abstract:Functionalization of mesoporous silica spheres with well-dispersed and ultra-small nanodots to exert their synergistic effects for biomedical applications has been considered to be an urgent challenge. Herein, homogeneously incorporation of ultra-small and monodispersed MoS2 nanodots in the mesoporous silica nanospheres (MSN) was achieved by a facile one-step solvothermal reaction. The as-synthesized UsMSND@MSN possessed uniform size (similar to 115 nm) and favorable biocompatibility inherited from MSN. The dispersed UsMSND within MSN could act as anchoring sites for aromatic anti-cancer drug DOX loading, and consequently achieved pH-responsive release based on the special Tr-Tr/electrostatic interactions with the DOX molecules. More importantly, the well-dispersed UsMSND in MSN could function as the non-toxic contrast agent for the sensitive in vivo CT imaging in various tumors including breast cancer and glioma with different sections. This work promises a good strategy for dispersed incorporation of UsMSND into MSN as an excellent pH-responsive platform for simultaneous cancer imaging and therapy. Abstract:Uniform MoS2 nanosheets/C hybrid microspheres with mean diameter of 320nm have been successfully synthesized via a facile one-pot hydrothermal route by sodium molybdate reacting with sulfocarbamide in d-glucose solutions. The products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). XRD patterns showed that the MoS2 was kept as a two-dimensional nanosheet crystal and C was retained as amorphous even after their annealing treatment at 800°C. TEM and SEM images indicated that the MoS2 nanosheets were uniformly dispersed in the amorphous carbon. The experiment results also revealed that the appropriate amount of d-glucose had an obvious effect on the formation of uniform MoS2 nanosheets/C hybrid microspheres. A possible formation process of MoS2 nanosheets/C hybrid microspheres was preliminarily presented.

Abstract:Two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides are affordable alternatives to noble metal catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, we report a facile one-step solvothermal method to synthesize the 1T MoS2 hierarchical nanosphere (NSP) that can function as an efficient and stable electrocatalyst for HER using an environment-friendly solvent without the assistance of a template or additive. The reaction solvent is found to play a vital role in regulating the morphology and phase of the resultant MoS2. A haystack of 2H MoS2 nanosheets is obtained when water is used as the solvent, and the 1T MoS2 NSP is attained when ethanol is used. The 1T MoS2 NSP has a three-dimensional hierarchical structure and good conductivity, which lead to the excellent electrocatalytic HER performance in an acid solution with its overpotential lower than the reported MoS2-based electrocatalysts. It also demonstrates exceptional electrochemical stability, showing little variation in overpotential for 5000 reaction cycles.
