Abstract:The micromechanical behaviors and mechanics-optics coupling effects of optic-fiber-concrete complex in the distributed optic-fiber sensing concrete-crack technology,which was used in health monitoring of Wu Gorge Bridge on Yangtze River and a large dam successfully,have been investigated.A micromechanical theoretical analysis method and micromechanical frictional contact bi-interface model,as well as a modified optical theoretical analysis method of the mechanics-optics coupling effects are presented.A series of verification experiments,including mechanical experiments and mechanics-optics coupling experiments,have been preformed.The results of micromechanical theoretical analysis and the analysis of the modified theory of mechanics-optics coupling along with mechanical and optical experimental data are shown to be in close agreement.Both the micromechanical theory and the modified theory of mechanics-optics coupling with their analysis methods can not only enhance credibility of this novel distributed sensing technology but also provide a way to understand its sensing mechanism and optimize its technical details and system.
Finite Element Analysis of Configuration and Fiber Orientation Effects on Fiber Metal Laminates Subjected to Low Velocity Impact

Abstract:The effects of configuration and fiber orientation on the performance of fiber metal laminates (FMLs) subjected to low velocity impact has been investigated. A finite element model has been firstly validated credible, and then it was adopted to simulate the impact response of other four types of FMLs with some differences in configuration or fiber layup orientation to compare with the experimental one. The analysis illustrated that 3/2 configuration FMLs has better impact characteristic than 2/1 configuration FMLs. Meanwhile, fiber orientation of woven glass fiber prepregs could be designed to offer FMLs with different impact resistance. These results are valuable for the purpose of designing the anti-impact aerospace structures when using FMLs panels.

Abstract:Modal analysis is commonly considered as an effective tool to obtain the intrinsic characteristics of structures including natural frequencies, modal damping ratios, and mode shapes, which are significant indicators for monitoring the health status of engineering structures. The complex mode indicator function (CMIF) can be regarded as an effective numerical tool to perform modal analysis. In this paper, experimental strain modal analysis based on the CMIF has been introduced. Moreover, a distributed fiber-optic sensor, as a dense measuring device, has been applied to acquire strain data along a beam surface. Thanks to the dense spatial resolution of the distributed fiber optics, more detailed mode shapes could be obtained. In order to test the effectiveness of the method, a mass lump—considered as a linear damage component—has been attached to the surface of the beam, and damage detection based on strain mode shape has been carried out. The results manifest that strain modal parameters can be estimated effectively by utilizing the CMIF based on the corresponding simulations and experiments. Furthermore, damage detection based on strain mode shapes benefits from the accuracy of strain mode shape recognition and the excellent performance of the distributed fiber optics.

Abstract:This paper studies the static and dynamic mechanical behaviors of novel micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) fiber-optical switch actuated by electrostatic attraction. The switch is composed of a skew plate, two drawing beams, a mirror and a substrate. The plate is restrained translationally at one end. The drawing beams provide additional restrain to the plate. The mirror is mounted on the plate. Three identical bending beams are inserted inside the plate to adjust the bending rigidity of the switch. Static and dynamic finite element (FE) simulations are implemented to obtain the mechanical characteristics of the minimum switching or pull-in voltages, the natural frequencies, mode shapes and responses under different levels of electrostatic attraction loads. A theoretical dynamic model is further developed to validate the FE simulation results. Good agreement is found between the FE simulation and the analytical results.

Abstract:The distributed-optic-fiber strain sensors based on the Brillouin scattering is one of the key problems in the monitoring of industrial structures and equipments and in the diagnosis of faults, and it has wide applications in not only the optic fiber communication, and intellectualized-structure-systems but also the space/aeronautics, civil construction, dam, and bridge construction etc engineering. The Brillouin frequency-shift caused by the optic-fiber strain in the sensor was analyzed and discussed theoretically, and on this basis, the relationship between the strain and frequency-shift was established which has been checked to be in good agreement with the experimental results available in literature.
Surface Sticked Fiber Optical Interferometer for the Detection of Delamination in Composites

Abstract:The sensing arm of a fiber optical Mach-Zehnder Interferometer is sticked on composite beams to detect the delamination in the beams. The possibility and the theory results are analysed with finite element method. The experiment results are in agreement with the theory results. The delamination can be detected when the beam is continuously supported, and can not be detected when the beam is simply supported. This technique is also fit for the debonding of repaired composite.

Abstract:A new linear sensing method of deflection and stress, in which the fiber grating bandwidth is stretched by using bilateral cantilever beam, is reported. The theoretical studies and the experimental results show that the bandwidth of fiber grating is sensitive and linear to deflection and lateral force. In the experiments, the range of linear sensing is not less than 17 nm. The sensing sensitivities are 0.658 mm/mm and 5.32 nm/N, respectively.

Abstract:We investigate the microscopic optical force density distributions respectively inside a subwavelength-diameter (SD) fiber with flat endface and inside one with oblique endface by using a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Optical force density distributions at the fiber endfaces can now be readily available. The complete knowledge of optical force density distributions not only reveal features regarding the microscopic near-field optomechanical interaction, but also provide straightforward explanations for the sideway deflections and other mechanical motions. Our results can provide a useful reference for better understanding the mechanical influence when light transports in a microscale or nanoscale structure and for developing future highly-sensitive optomechanical devices.

Abstract:This paper proposes an optical fiber sensor based on multimode interference (MMI) with a lateral offset structure to measure tensile strain. The coupling ratio of each higher-order mode in the coreless fiber (NCF) can be controlled by the dislocation distance. The experimental results show that the best interference fringes are obtained when the dislocation is 10 & mu;m and the sensitivity in the range of 0-500 & mu;?????? is 28 pm/& mu;??????. To improve the sensitivity of the sensor further, the measured data were filtered by fast Fourier transform (FFT) and inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) to obtain a sinusoidal component, superimposed with a simulated signal to form a vernier effect. With the method of virtual vernier effect, the sensitivity is increased to 452.64 pm/& mu;??????, which is 15.6 times the original sensitivity. Compared with the traditional vernier effect, the virtual vernier effect method does not require cascade or series method, the reference part is not affected by the environment, and the method can be widely used in many types of interferometric fiber optic sensor devices, especially to overcome the problem that MMI is not suitable for vernier effect.

Abstract:The diffraction wavefront of an optical fiber with some faultiness is analyzed. The quality of the diffraction wavefront, which acts as the referenced wave in the fiber point diffraction interferometer (FPDI), is crucial for the measurement accuracy. The theory model for a fiber point diffraction source is presented and then numerical calculation is used for analysis. Results show the effects of the fiber parameters such as core diameter, slight ellipticity and oblique face.

Abstract:A strain transfer model is developed to describe the transfer of crack opening displacement (COD) of double cracks in a structural substrate to the distributed fiber optic sensor (DFOS). Global and local coordinate systems are set up to aid in the deduction of the transfer of CODs of the double cracks to the DFOS. The analytical model of strain transfer is first derived in the local coordinate system and then is transformed into the global coordinate system. Analytical results show that the DFOS fiber strain induced by CODs of the double cracks in the structural substrate is affected by both the spacing and the CODs of the double cracks, and the strain peak is suppressed as the crack spacing is less than the characteristic length which is defined as the range of influence of the COD of the individual crack. The influences of the material properties of the DFOS, the fiber coating, the bonding adhesive, and the DFOS-fiber coating interfacial stiffness are discussed. The developed model is also experimentally validated by monitoring CODs of double cracks in aluminum alloy plates with optical frequency domain reflectometer (OFDR) DFOSs. Experimental results show that the strain distribution measured by the OFDR DFOSs agree well with the analytical results of the developed model. The limitations of the developed model and future work anticipated are then discussed.

Abstract:Development of a model for the analysis of strain transfer mechanism in Brillouin-based sensors with strain singularities is provided in this study. The main objective of the research pertained to the development of a method for accurate detection of cracks and their locations in sensing with Brillouin-based fiber optic distributed sensors. The work involved formulation of a shear lag-based model considering the elastic as well as elastoplastic stages of the fiber optic coating strains. Feasibility of the proposed approach is evaluated through an experimental program. The experimental program involved use of a Brillouin optical time domain reflectometer (BOTDR) for distributed measurement of strain and detection of simulated cracks in a 15-m-long beam. The results indicate that the discontinuities in the strain distribution based on the theoretical analysis provide the means to accurately pinpoint the location of simulated cracks. On the other hand, the distortion effect of the BOTDR system due to averaging of the strains over the spatial resolution of the system masked the influence of strain discontinuities. In contrast to the strains acquired through the averaging process in BOTDR, the theoretical computations pertain to the actual distribution of strain along the length of the beam. Optomechanical relationships were also used to simulate the effect of spatial resolution on the theoretical results. The apparent strains obtained in this way were compared with the BOTDR measured values. Because of the measurement noise, the apparent strains based on the theoretical computations provided better information about the location of the cracks. Abstract:An analytical study for dynamic behavior of pultruded fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) composite cantilever I-beams is presented. Based on a Vlasov-type linear hypothesis, dynamic beam mass and stiffness coefficients, which account for both cross-section geometry and material anisotropy of the beam, are obtained. The eigenfrequency problem is solved by a Ritz energy method, and both exact transcendental and polynomial shape functions satisfying the boundary conditions of cantilever beams are used to describe the modal shapes. Good agreement between the proposed analytical method and finite-element analysis is obtained. The effect of beam span length, fiber orientation, and fiber volume fraction on natural frequencies is investigated. The proposed analytical solution can be used to effectively predict the vibration behavior of FRP cantilever I-beams.

Abstract:Optical fiber sensors based on the Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA) have good accuracy of crack opening displacement (COD) measurements. In this paper, we propose a method for COD quantification based on the area under the Brillouin frequency peaks induced by a crack. The study adopted a three-dimensional (3D) finite element model (FEM) to simulate the strain distribution within a segment of an optical fiber. The simulation results revealed that an increase in COD was associated with an increase in the Brillouin frequency peak area. The peak strain increased by 93 mu epsilon when the COD increased from 30 mu m to 110 mu m. The numerical findings were proved experimentally by employing a BOTDA interrogator for distributed sensing of strains. Two cracks in a 15-m-long steel beam were detected with the smallest error of 13%. The COD was predicted from the areas under the crack-introduced strain peaks under varying loads of 97, 196, 294 and 392 N. The effect of different spatial resolutions (10, 20 and 50 cm) and intervals (1, 2.5 and 5 cm) on sensing performance was discussed. Compared to previous research, the 3D FEM not only accurately predicted the changes in distributed optical fibers with cracks but also simplified traditional theoretical analysis. For the first time, a method has been introduced to predict cracks by comparing the area under the Brillouin peaks. This approach not only enhanced linearity but also reduced errors. The proposed method can be easily implemented in engineering practice for multi-point crack sensing in civil infrastructure.

A system comprising of two type of FOS was established to improve linearity, by making computation between a random type and a semicircle type reflective FOS. It was found, on the basis of measurement that the displacement sensor had a good linearity in a large range of more than 5mm.

Abstract:In this paper, using numerical methods, first, the transmittance characteristic of single mode OmniGuide fibers – the hollow dielectric waveguides in which light is confined by a large index-contrast omnidirectional dielectric mirror is analyzed. We found that the minimum periodic number of omnidirectional mirror of high transmission OmniGuide fibers with small bend radius is three layers. Then, the distortion characteristics of the elliptical and cylindrical OmniGuide fibers are analyzed, and we found that maintaining transverse mode field distribution in single mode OmniGuide fiber is almost changeless when fiber is obviously bent or distorted. Therefore, the hollow dielectric waveguide fibers will be useful as large mode area fiber for advanced high-power amplifiers and lasers.

Abstract:This paper discusses the characteristic of two-fiber, intensity modulated FODS, a type of high sensitivity displacement sensor, from a theoretical prospective, focusing on the geometrical parameters including fiber aperture (NA), radius of fiber core (r), lateral separation of the transmitting and receiving fibers (s), the angle between the two fibers (2a), and the reflector curvature radius (Rc). A mathematical model is set up to investigate the influence on the performance of FODS introduced by the variation of these parameters, and the simulation results are also presented to conduct farther study in this field.

Abstract:An optical readout platform using a knife-edge filter for detecting the bending of a bimaterial microcantilever array is established, and the influence of stress-induced micromirror deformation on the optical detection sensitivity is discussed. The influence of deformation is modeled theoretically and validated experimentally. Analysis shows that the optical detection sensitivity will decrease by 50% when the mirror has a deformation of lambda/5 (lambda is the wavelength of readout light). Finally, an infrared image is obtained by the platform.

Abstract:Static fatigue behavior is the main failure mode of optical fibers applied in sensors. In this paper, a computational framework based on continuum damage mechanics (CDM) is presented to calculate the crack propagation process and failure time of optical fibers subjected to static bending and tensile loads. For this purpose, the static fatigue crack propagation in the glass core of the optical fiber is studied. Combining a finite element method (FEM), we use the continuum damage mechanics for the glass core to calculate the crack propagation path and corresponding failure time. In addition, three factors including bending radius, tensile force and optical fiber diameter are investigated to find their impacts on the crack propagation process and failure time of the optical fiber under concerned situations. Finally, experiments are conducted and the results verify the correctness of the simulation calculation. It is believed that the proposed method could give a straightforward description of the crack propagation path in the inner glass core. Additionally, the predicted crack propagation time of the optical fiber with different factors can provide effective suggestions for improving the long-term usage of optical fibers.
