The effect of icing on small unmanned aircraft low Reynolds number airfoils

Abstract:A small fixed-wing unmanned aircraft was experimentally tested to assess the impact of wing ice accretion on its aerodynamic performance and flight characteristics. These aircraft typically utilise low-Reynolds number airfoils where a large proportion of the flow is laminar. The effect of ice accretion on these airfoils is not well understood; furthermore, studies have shown that the ice shapes differ significantly from those on high Reynolds number airfoils. A joint research activity by the Canadian National Research Council, the New Zealand Defence Technology Agency, the United States Air Force Research Laboratory and the Australian Defence Science and Technology Group has been investigating low-Reynolds number airfoil icing through a series of experimental programs. Details of the experimental studies are presented in this paper.
