Abstract:Solid-state batteries (SSB) have received increasing attention as a next-generation energy storage technology due to their potential in delivering superior energy density, power density and safety compared to commercial Li-ion batteries. One of the main challenges limiting their practical implementation is the rapid capacity decay caused by the loss of contact between cathode active material and solid electrolyte upon cycling. Here we use the promising high voltage, low-cost spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) as a model system to demonstrate the importance of the cathode microstructure in SSBs. We design Al2O3-coated LNMO particles with a hollow microstructure aimed at suppressing electrolyte decomposition, minimise volume change during cycling and shorten the Li-diffusion pathway to achieve maximum cathode utilisation and improve areal capacity. When cycled with a Li6PS5Cl solid electrolyte and a Li-In anode, we demonstrate capacity retention above 70% after 100 cycles with an active material loading of 27 mg/cm2 (2.2 mAh/cm2) at a current density of 0.8 mA/ cm2.

Abstract:LiMn1.95Ni0.05O3.98F0.02 octahedral particles with lithium-ion solid electrolyte Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) coating are prepared by a Pechini method. The relationship between the structure and electrochemical performance of the modified samples is investigated. As revealed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope, LLZO coating does not change the cubic spinel crystal structure of the pristine matrix (space group \( Fd\overline{3}m \)). Moreover, the LLZO coating materials exist as nanosheets or nanoparticles. The morphology of the coating varies as the weight percentage increases from 1.0 to 3.0. LiMn1.95Ni0.05O3.98F0.02 coated with 2.0 wt% LLZO exhibits better cycle performance and rate capability at elevated temperature (i.e., 55 °C), while the coating exists as distinct reticulation covering the surface.

Abstract:The co-doping with metal cations and incorporation of the Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) superionic conductor into spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 are achieved in situ through a spray drying method by co-doping with Zr and La elements. Microscopic structural characterizations reveal that the doping of hetero-cations into LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 is effective at reducing the amount of Mn3+, enhancing the cation ordering, and improving the structural stability of LNMO crystals. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectrometric (EDS) analyses validate the successful growth of LLZO during the calcination of the LNMO material. Incorporation of the LLZO superionic conductor into the bulk phase of LNMO considerably improves the intrinsic lithium diffusion rate within the crystal. Electrochemical studies reveal that the LNMO/LLZO composite at 50 : 1 ratio exhibits the best overall electrochemical behavior, in terms of reversible capacity, rate capability, and long-term cycling performance. At 20C discharge rate, the composite cathode delivers a capacity of 84.5 mA h g(-1), whereas the pristine LNMO only maintains 14.8 mA h g(-1) capacity. After 300 cycles, a capacity retention of 95.9% is obtained for the composite electrode, but only 87.6% for the pure LNMO cathode. The lithium ion diffusion coefficient of 1.83 x 10(-10) cm(2) s(-1) is obtained for the composite cathode, which is three times as high as that of pure LNMO (6.43 x 10(-11)).

Abstract:The composite cathode materials consisting of spinel-structure Li1.05Ni0.1Mn1.9O3.98F0.02 and nano-sized solid electrolyte Li–La–Ti–O (LLTO) coating were synthesized by the molten salt method and sol–gel coating process. Our results showed that Ni–F co-doping, recrystallization and LLTO coating can significantly improve the electrochemical performance of spinel LiMn2O4 cathode materials at elevated temperature and large rates. The doping and recrystallization can improve the stability of spinel grain structure and solid electrolyte LLTO coating can effectively suppresses HF-induced Mn2+ dissolution and maintains the structural integrity during cycling. At room temperature and low rates, the doping and recrystallization play dominant roles, at elevated temperature and large rates, the protective role of solid electrolyte coating is prominent.

Abstract:Porous spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 microspheres were synthesized by a co-precipitation method. F-doping and Li4SiO4-coating were used as two effective ways to enhance the electrochemical performance of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 at both room temperature and elevated temperature. All the samples were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis/differential scanning calorimetry (TG/DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductive coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electrochemical tests, respectively. According to the SEM images, the LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 microspheres are hollow with porous shell, and each microsphere is made up of nano-sized spinel grains. This hollow and porous structure favors the sufficient contact between electrolyte and the cathode material. It is indicated that 2 wt.% Li4SiO4-coated LiNi0.5Mn1.5O3.98F0.02 exhibits more superior performance than the pristine one. The doped fluorine ions that enhance the bonding can stabilize the structure of cathode material. The Li4SiO4 coating can suppress side reactions between electrolyte and cathode material as a protective material, and it is a superionic conductor with a three-dimensional lithium ion transfer network to decrease the charge-transfer resistance. The discharge capacity retention of 2 wt.% Li(4)SiO(4)coated LiNi0.5Mn1.5O3.98F0.02 is 97.8% at 25 degrees C and 94.2% at 55 degrees C after 150 cycles, respectively. Abstract:The severe capacity loss of spinel LiMn2O4 (LMO) limits the utility of this otherwise promising lithium ion battery cathode material. One of the strategies to mitigate capacity fade is applying a coating on LMO particle surfaces. While this approach yields promising results, there is limited understanding of mechanisms whereby coatings improve LMO capacity retention. Herein, the effects of a new protective coating material, La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 (LSCO), in a thin-film battery geometry that is amenable to fundamental studies of electrode processes, are reported. RF sputtering deposition is used to produce high quality 25-100 nm LMO cathodes on Al2O3 substrates with an intervening Pt/Ti back-side contact layer. Cycling of the un-coated cathodes results in capacity loss of 18% over 300 cycles. Adding a 2 nm LSCO layer reduces the capacity loss to 3%. While this may be due in part to reduced Mn dissolution, scanning transmission electron microscopy results indicate that the coating helps to preserve crystallinity and reduce lattice structure distortion due to inhibited formation of defect tetragonal spinel. Three-electrode electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results reveal that the LSCO coating increases charge transfer and ohmic resistances, but the increases are generally too small to significantly impact cell performance even at high C-rates.

Abstract:The grains of LiMn_2O_4 and LiM_xMn_(2-x)O_4 (M=Li, Ni) were coated with LiCoO_2 by using sol-gel process. XRD and EPMA studies confirme the presence of a Co-rich spinel LiMn_(2-x)Co_xO_4 layer on the surface of LiM_xMn_(2-x)O_4 grains and the content of Co decreases gradually from the surface to the core of spinel grains. Furthermore, the amount of Mn~(3+) in the surface layer is less than in the core, so the possibility of Mn dissolution decreases. The surface treatment is effective in reducing the rate of Mn dissolution into electrolyte and improving cy- clability of spinel LiM_xMn_(2-x)O_4 cathode materials. After bulk Ni-doped spinel LiNi_(0.1)Mn_(1.9)O_4 coated with LiCoO_2, the cyclability of the material is better than that of pure spinel LiMn_2O_4 and just only cations doped.
One-step Synthesis and Effect of Heat-Treatment on the Structure and Electrochemical Properties of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 Cathode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (Fd-3 m) powders are synthesized by a facile one-step sol-gel approach with a resorcinol formaldehyde (RF) resin as a chelating agent. The cross-linked metal-containing RF xerogel particles are sintered at different high temperatures from 750 to 950 degrees C to produce several micronsized LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 powders. Electrochemical measurements suggest that the 850 degrees C-sintered (in air) sample (Fd-3 m phase) performs the best with a discharge capacity of 141 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C and 110 mAh g(-1) at 10 C, and capacity-retention of 96.3% after 60 cycles at 0.25 C and 89% after 200 cycles at 1 C. For comparison, the LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 sample sintered at 850 degrees C in O-2 (P4(3)32 phase) presents limited rate performance (45 mAh g(-1) at 10 C) and higher values in both AC impedance and DC-method derived resistance. A characteristic double "w"-shape curve of DC resistance against cell potential can be possibly considered as an indicator to probe the material structure transition during the charge/discharge process of the cell. Abstract:Li1.05Co0.1Mn1.9O3.95F0.05 rods with a spinel structure were synthesized by a topochemical conversion route, and a Li-Al-Si-O (LASO) glassy solid electrolyte was used to modify the surface of the cathode material. The structure and electrochemical properties were investigated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope and electrochemical tests. XRD, SEM and TEM observations show that Li1.05Co0.1Mn1.9O3.95F0.05 materials have a single crystal of cubic spinel structure and exhibit a rod-like morphology with a diameter of 400-500 nm. The electrochemical results indicate that LASO-coated Li1.05Co0.1Mn1.9O3.95F0.05 rods exhibit an excellent rate capability and cycle stability at elevated temperatures and high rates. The initial discharge capacity of the LCMOF-rod-LASO sample is 93.9 mA h g(-1) under 10 C at 55 degrees C, and the capacity retention ratio is higher than 96% after 200 cycles. Even under 15 C at 55 degrees C, the cathode material shows a high capacity of 87 mA h g(-1). The cyclic voltammograms and impedance spectra results reveal that the LASO coating enhances the kinetics of the lithium-ion diffusion through the surface layer and the charge transfer reaction, improving the electrochemical activity of the cathode. Thus, the LASO-coated Li1.05Co0.1Mn1.9O3.95F0.05 rods have shown potential for high power applications in lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 spinels coated with various amounts of fumed silica have been synthesized and investigated as cathode materials for high-voltage lithium-ion batteries at the elevated temperature (55°C). The morphology and structure of the coated LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 samples were characterized by XRD, TEM and EDX. It was found that the surfaces of the coated LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 samples are covered with a porous, amorphous, nanostructured SiO2 layer. The results of electrochemical experiments showed that the SiO2-coated LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 samples display obviously improved capacity retention rate, and the improvement effect enhances with the increase of SiO2 content. The XPS results revealed that the surfaces of the SiO2-coated LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode materials have relatively low content of LiF, and this is mainly responsible for their improved electrochemical cycling stability.

Abstract:Lithium zirconate (LZO) coatings were routinely applied to NCM cathode materials in industry to improve cyclability and stability, but their working principles remain some elusive. Li/Zr molar ratios for coating preparation in sol-gel route always shows random variations in literature, due to vaporization of lithium source, solid-state diffusion of Zr4+ and formation of residue lithium. In this work, LZO coatings were prepared via a sol-gel route, and chemical compositions and amounts of Zr4+ doping were studied with varying Li/Zr molar ratios. It was found that, the surface composition of LZO was dominated by Li2ZrO3 at a low Li/Zr molar ratio of 2.1, and then Li6Zr2O7 and residue lithium increased with a rising Li/Zr molar ratio. As for the ion doping, Zr4+ preferred to enter crystal lattices of NCM811 at a low Li/Zr molar ratio. The best electrochemical performance was achieved for the LZO modified NCM811 with a Li/Zr ratio of 2.4 (NCM811-LZO2.4), and the reasons could be attribute to modification processes introduced moderate Zr4+ doping and the multiphase LZO (Li2ZrO3 and Li6Zr2O7) coating onto the NCM811, which reduced the surface residue lithium and enhanced transport rate of charge carriers. As a result, the NCM811-LZO2.4 delivers a high coulombic efficiency of 91.4% in the initial cycle, outstanding capacity retention after 500 cycles (193 mAh g−1 at 0.2 C), and a good rate capacity of 155.9 mAh g−1 at 10 C. This work provides a method of tailoring chemical compositions of LZO protective coatings to improve the electrochemical performance of NCM811 materials.

Abstract:Nb2O5 has attracted substantial attention because of its effectiveness in improving the capacity retention and rate capability of cathode materials. However, modulating the interactions between Nb2O5- and Mn-contained cathode materials is the key to the success of the cycling performance. In this paper, we investigated the general and atomic-level structural interactions between the LiMn2O4 spinel cathode material and 0.5–3 wt % Nb2O5. The results showed that Nb2O5 was predominately bond on the surface of the LiMn2O4 spinel cathode by carefully controlled coating concentration and temperature (e.g., 0.5 wt % at 500 °C). In this case, a significantly improved electrochemical performance was obtained, even during cycling at 55 °C or between 3 and 5.1 V. In contrast, Nb5+ ions diffused into the cathode structure at a high coating concentration, and the temperature was charge compensated by the generation of more Mn3+ ions. Abstract:Abstract Spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) has become one of the most practical power lithium-ion battery cathode materials due to its advantages of three-dimensional Li+ diffusion channel, higher potential window (3.5–5V), high-energy density (∼660 Wh/kg), and high-power density. In this manuscript, a hollow spherical LNMO material with large size and high crystallinity is prepared by a modified coprecipitation method using ethyl alcohol as a peptizator. Subsequently, the prepared LNMO material is further modified by an Al2O3 coating to improve its cycle stability. Results show that the initial discharge-specific capacity of LNMO material with 1 wt% Al2O3 coating is 133.7 mAh g−1 at 0.2 C rate, and the capacity retention rate is 97.7% after 100 cycles. The effective increase in the cycle life of the battery can be attributed to the uniform and dense Al2O3 coating on the surface of the material.

Abstract:A LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode material was successfully coated with a thin nanolayer of LaCoO3 via a hydrothermal process. The LaCoO3-coated LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 materials were systematically examined in terms of their crystalline structure, surface morphology, and electrochemical performance. Microscopic structural characterizations indicated that the LaCoO3 coating layer could effectively decrease the Mn3+ ion content to alleviate the Mn2+ dissolution and thus enhance the structural stability of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4. The content of oxygen vacancies also remarkably increased on the surface of the LaCoO3-coated LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 materials according to the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results. Electrochemical measurements indicated that the 1 wt% LaCoO3-coated LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (denoted as LNMO@LCO-1) showed optimal electrochemical behavior in terms of rate capability, long-time cycling performance, and elevated temperature stability. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analyses indicated that the LNMO@LCO-1 exhibited a higher lithium-ion diffusion coefficient and a lower charge-transfer resistance, illustrating that the LaCoO3 coating could accelerate the electrochemical kinetics behavior. Post-cycle surface morphology analyses and material aging experiments confirmed that a thinner solid electrolyte interface layer was generated on the surface of LNMO@LCO-1, which could alleviate the side reactions and reduce the surface impedance. This study demonstrated that LaCoO3, as a coating material, can enhance the electrochemical performance of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4.

Abstract:Submicron-sized single crystal Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 was prepared to enhance the structural stability and lithium ion migration rate of Li-rich cathode materials. The preparation process of single crystal particles was beneficial for materials with good layered structures and low cation mixing degrees. Due to the single crystal morphology of the materials, the particles remained intact without cracks after cycling, which reduced side reactions between the cathode material and electrolyte, thus preventing the structural phase transformation. The preparation of submicron-sized single crystal particles provides a new strategy to improve the electrochemical properties of Li-rich cathode materials.

Abstract:Abstract We present a simple method for producing SiO2-modified LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) cathode materials. Manganese carbonate was directly mixed with nickel nitrate and lithium hydroxide, and a spherical structure LNMO cathode material was prepared by two-step calcination, then ethyl orthosilicate and LNMO powder were simply mixed in solid and liquid phases to prepare SiO2-coated LNMO material. The effect of SiO2 coating on the structure of LNMO was studied by diffraction of X-rays, scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. An amorphous SiO2 coating layer developed on the surface of the LNMO particles in the modification and this could alleviate the strike of hydrogen fluoride (HF) caused by electrolyte decomposition as well as the development of a solid electrolyte interphase. The electrochemical performance of the coated material was as follows: when the amount of SiO2 was 0 wt%, 1 wt%, 2 wt%, and 3 wt%, the initial discharge capacity of the sample was 98.2, 84.1, 101.3, and 89.8mAh/g, respectively. After 50 charge−discharge cycles, the capacity retention rates are 92.7%, 66.8%, 97.9%, and 93.8%, respectively. The cyclic stability of the samples can be significantly improved when the SiO2 coating amount is 2 wt% and 3 wt%, indicating that SiO2 coating can not only improve the discharge-specific capacity of the material but also improve its cyclic stability.

Abstract:To reveal the effects of Co-doping on the electrochemical performance of micro-sized LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO), undoped LNMO and Co-doped LiCo0.1Ni0.45Mn1.45O4 (LCoNMO) are synthesized via a PVP-combustion method and calcined at 1000°C for 6h. SEM and XRD analyses suggest that Co-doping decreases the particle size and the LizNi1-zO2 impurity at the calcination temperature of 1000°C. LCoNMO has much better rate capability while its specific capacity at C/5 is 10% lower than that of LNMO. At 15C rate, their specific capacities are closed, and the LCoNMO delivers 86.2% capacity relative to C/5, and this value for LNMO is only 77.0%. The DLi+values determined by potential intermittent titration technique (PITT) test of LCoNMO are 1–2 times higher than that of LNMO in most SOC region. The LCoNMO shows very excellent cycling performance, which is the best value compared with literatures. After 1000cycles, the LCoNMO still delivers 94.1% capacity. Moreover, its coulombic efficiency and energy efficiency keep at 99.84% and over 97.3% during 1C cycling, respectively.
