Abstract:In the current study, a 1-D phenomenological model is constructed to capture the temperature-induced hysteretic response in polycrystalline shape memory alloys (SMAs). The martensitic and austenitic transformations are regarded as the first-order transitions. A differential single-crystal model is formulated on the basis of Landau theory. It is assumed that the transformation temperatures follow the normal distribution among the grains due to the anisotropic stress field developed in the material. The polycrystalline hysteretic response is expressed as the integration of single-crystal responses. Besides, the prediction strategy for incomplete transitions is presented, and the first-order reversal curves are obtained via density reassignment. The proposed model is numerically implemented for validation. Comparisons between the modeling results and the experimental ones demonstrate the capability of the proposed model in addressing the hysteresis in thermally-induced phase transformations.
Low Dimensional Approximations to Ferroelastic Dynamics and Hysteretic Behavior Due to Phase Transformations

Abstract:In this paper, a low dimensional model is constructed to approximate the nonlinear ferroelastic dynamics involving mechanically and thermally-induced martensite transformations. The dynamics of the first order martensite transformation is first modeled by a set of nonlinear coupled partial differential equations (PDEs), which is obtained by using the modified Ginzburg-Landau theory. The Chebyshev collocation method is employed for the numerical analysis of the PDE model. An extended proper orthogonal decomposition is then carried out to construct a set of empirical orthogonal eigenmodes of the dynamics, with which system characteristics can be optimally approximated (in a specified sense) within a range of different temperatures and under various mechanical and thermal loadings. The performance of the low dimensional model is analyzed numerically. Results on the dynamics involving mechanically and thermally-induced phase transformations and the hysteresis effects induced by such transformations are presented.

Abstract:In the current paper, the coupled fatigue hysteretic behaviors in ferroelectric ceramics are modeled by a blending a phenomenological hysteresis model with point defects. The time-dependent phenomenological model is employed to capture the hysteresis loops associated with phase transitions. The fatigue hysteresis is modeled by combining the single-crystal model with time functions. The mechanism of fatigue in ferroelectric ceramics is interpreted as an accumulation of residual polarization in the proposed model. Numerical results of static and dynamic hysteretic behaviors are presented and compared to their experimental counterparts. The capability of the proposed model for capturing the fatigue phenomenon is validated.

Abstract:In this paper, an approach based on the nonlinear theory of elastic dynamics is proposed to model microstructure evolution in a shape memory alloy patch. The hysteretic dynamics of the patch at the macro-scale is also modeled by employing Hamilton's principle. The elastic potential energy function is constructed as non-convex on the deviatoric strain, and the governing equations are formulated as two coupled wave equations in terms of the two displacement components. Square to rectangle transformations and rectangle variant re-orientations are modeled by simulating the transitions of system states from one stable branch of the non-convex constitutive relation to another. The proposed model allows a robust implementation of conventional finite element analysis with all typical boundary conditions, but with strong nonlinearity. Numerical results for microstructure evolution caused by boundary stress loadings are presented, laminated structures and needle-like microstructures, which are often observed in experimental investigations, are also obtained. Hysteretic dynamics at the macro-scale is presented together with microstructure evolution.

Abstract:The phenomenon of pseudo-elasticity is connected with a phase transition. Its description requires a non-convex free energy and a non-monotone load-deformation curve. Realistic functions like that are too complicated to permit the analytic calculation of phase equilibria and the evaluation of stability properties of a phase mixture. One has to resort to graphical methods, see [1], or to numerical calculations. However, here we approximate the non-convex free energy by a train of two intersecting parabolae. This simplification enables us to carry out all calculation explicitly and it seems to describe - at least qualitatively - most phenomena observed in pseudoelasticity.

Abstract:In the current paper, the hysteretic dynamics of ferroelectric materials under combined electro-mechanical loadings is investigated using a macroscopic differential model. The model is constructed on the basis of the Landau theory of the first order phase transformations. Hysteresis loops in the electric field and the butterfly-shaped behaviors in the electro-mechanical coupling are modeled as a consequence of polarizations and orientation switchings, together with nonlinear electro-mechanical coupling effects. The effects of bias stress on the orientation switchings are investigated numerically. Comparison of the model results with its experimental counterparts is presented, capability of the model is approved.

Abstract:A dynamical mathematical model is proposed to model the hysteretic behaviour of magnetorheological fluids and dampers using phase-transition theory. To construct the model involving hysteresis, the magnetorheological fluids are assumed to be switchable between different phases upon the application of a shear strain rate, with one solid-like phase and two fluid-like phases. The Landau theory for phase transition is employed to model the dynamics of the phase transition in the fluids. The proposed model is able to capture hysteresis loops, and is rate dependent (frequency dependent). A comparison between predicted and experimental behaviour of the damper is presented, and perfect agreement is obtained.

Abstract:The time-dependent behavior of glass transition can be exploited to achieve shape-memory behavior in amorphous polymers. Modeling the shape-memory effect in polymers requires considering the viscoelastic behavior, structural evolution in response to external stimuli, such as temperature, stress, solvent. Furthermore, the broad spectrum of stress and structural relaxation times are needed to accurately predict the rate-dependent recovery response. In this paper, we review our efforts to develop constitutive models for the glass transition behavior of amorphous polymers to predict the shape-memory behavior under a variety of thermomechanical conditions.
An Effective Temperature Theory for the Nonequilibrium Behavior of Amorphous Polymers

Abstract:Amorphous polymers lack an organized microstructure, yet they exhibit structural evolution, where physical properties change with time, temperature, and inelastic deformation. To describe the influence of structural evolution on the mechanical behavior of amorphous polymers, we developed a thermomechanical theory that introduces the effective temperature as a thermodynamic state variable representing the nonequilibrium configurational structure. The theory couples the evolution of the effective temperature and internal state variables to describe the temperature-dependent and rate-dependent inelastic response through the glass transition. We applied the theory to model the effect of temperature, strain rate, aging time, and plastic pre-deformation on the uniaxial compression response and enthalpy change with temperature of an acrylate network. The results showed excellent agreement with experiments and demonstrate the ability of the effective temperature theory to explain the complex thermomechanical behavior of amorphous polymers.

Abstract:The temperature fields and the energy dissipations of shape memory alloys during the stress-induced martensitic transformations are studied theoretically and experimentally. The effect of the loading rate is analyzed. It was found that the temperature field inside a shape memory alloy sample varies strongly in space and time. The increase rate of the temperature is given by the difference between the rate of the latent heat release and the rate of the heat convection and conduction. The notion and the rate dependence of the energy dissipation are discussed in connection with the stress–strain hysteresis, the entropy production, and the Clausius–Duhem inequality.

Abstract:Non-convex energy and inter-facial energy have been considered as fundamental in modeling the martensitic-austenitic phase transformation with hysteresis. For a one-dimensional bar, an additional non-local energy penalizing the inhomogeneous deformation needs to be considered in order to obtain finely lamellated phase mixtures. We study the thermodynamic consequences of such energy penalization, in particular, the possible energy barriers that can lock the phase transition process so as to produce hysteresis. Under the assumption that the energy penalty for the interfaces and the penalty for inhomogeneity are both very small, we reduce the total energy functional into a function of the strain, the phase fraction and the number of interfaces. Minimization of the total energy determines the number of interfaces in terms of the phase fraction. The model also predicts that the martensitic transformation needs a large driving force for starting while it can proceed at a lower driving force. Also the phase transition nucleates with a small but finite amount of the new phase, i.e., with non-zero values of the phase fraction and of the number of interfaces. Possible mechanism for hysteresis of phase transition is discussed with the energy barriers in Gibbs free energy.

Abstract:We report on experiments aimed at comparing the hysteretic response of a Cu-Zn-Al single crystal undergoing a martensitic transition under strain-driven and stress-driven conditions. Strain-driven experiments were performed using a conventional tensile machine while a special device was designed to perform stress-driven experiments. Significant differences in the hysteresis loops were found. The strain-driven curves show re-entrant behaviour (yield point) which is not observed in the stress-driven case. The dissipated energy in the stress-driven curves is larger than in the strain-driven ones. Results from recently proposed models qualitatively agree with experiments.

Abstract:This paper discusses the different transitions from periodicity to quasi-periodicity, intermittency and chaos in systems with hysteresis. Three types of hysteresis are considered: the Bouc-Wen law of hysteresis, the Masing law and the pseudoelastic constitutive law typical of shape memory alloys. The first two rate-independent models do not account for heat transfers, while in the third case the thermodynamic transformations are taken into account. It is shown that these systems share similar trends for the loss of stability of the fundamental response to highly nonlinear responses of various kinds.

Abstract:The Preisach Model for ferromagnets is generalized and adapted for the description of the hysteretic behaviour of a polycrystalline specimen of shapememory alloys. The thermodynamical properties of the individual crystallites are described by the Landau-Devonshire free energy which contains four parameters. The corresponding quadruplets of parameters of a polycrystalline body fill a region in a four-dimensional Preisach space. A thermodynamical loading path will sweep surfaces across this region and change phases in the process. The physical problem of the response of a specimen to applied loads is thus converted into the geometrical problem of counting volumes between moving surfaces. This conversion facilitates the numerical evaluation of the effect of complicated loading paths.

Abstract:This paper presents a thermomechanical model for pseudoelastic shape memory alloys (SMAs) accounting for internal hysteresis effect due to incomplete phase transformation. The model is developed within the finite-strain framework, wherein the deformation gradient is multiplicatively decomposed into thermal dilation, rigid body rotation, elastic and transformation parts. Helmholtz free energy density comprises three components: the reversible thermodynamic process, the irreversible thermodynamic process and the physical constraints of both. In order to capture the multiple internal hysteresis loops in SMA, two internal variables representing the transition points of the forward and reverse phase transformation, <span class="mathjax-tex">\(\phi _s^f\)</span> and <span class="mathjax-tex">\(\phi _s^r\)</span>, are introduced to describe the incomplete phase transformation process. Evolution equations of the internal variables are derived and linked to the phase transformation. Numerical implementation of the model features an Euler discretization and a cutting-plane algorithm. After validation of the model against the experimental data, numerical examples are presented, involving a SMA-based vibration system and a crack SMA specimen subjected to partial loading–unloading case. Simulation results well demonstrate the internal hysteresis and free vibration behavior of SMA.

Abstract:Reversibility of structural phase transformations has profound technological implications in a wide range of applications from fatigue life in shape-memory alloys (SMAs) to magnetism in multiferroic oxides. The geometric nonlinear theory of martensite universally applicable to all structural transitions has been developed. It predicts the reversibility of the transitions as manifested in the hysteresis behaviour based solely on crystal symmetry and geometric compatibilities between phases. In this article, we report on the verification of the theory using the high-throughput approach. The thin-film composition-spread technique was devised to rapidly map the lattice parameters and the thermal hysteresis of ternary alloy systems. A clear relationship between the hysteresis and the middle eigenvalue of the transformation stretch tensor as predicted by the theory was observed for the first time. We have also identified a new composition region of titanium-rich SMAs with potential for improved control of SMA properties.

Abstract:(1) First Order Phase Transition There always appear two dielectric loss and/or two mechanical dissipation peaks (P-2 and P-3) related to domain walls in many martensitic and ferroic materials. The P-2 near T-c (or M-s) originates from first-order phase transition or phase-like transition and shows static hysteresis character, but in a certain frequency range (kHz) manifests relaxation behavior, with tau = tau(0)exp[-B/(T-c - T)]. The transient componant of P-2 is also reviewed.(2) Glass Transition The peak P-3 at kHz often appears near a freezing temperature T-f as in KDP, TGS and occasionally in Mn-Cu at Hz, with tau = tau(0)exp[U/(T - T-f)], a Vogel-Fulcher relation, showing a "Transition" type of glass-transition of domain wall. Whereas the glass-transition in C-60 crystal obeys the Arrhenius relation, exibiting "Kinetic" type of glass-transition.(3) Flux Melting The peak just below T-c was measured for melt-textured YBa2Cu3O7 + delta superconductors in an applied magnetic field and various frequencies. The peak hight satisfies the power law Q(-1) proportional to omega(-n) (1 < n < 2), being explained by the melting and viscous motion of flux.

Abstract:We considered a generic case of pre-transitional materials with static stress-generating defects, dislocations and coherent nano-precipitates, at temperatures close but above the starting temperature of martensitic transformation, Ms. Using the Phase Field Microelasticity theory and 3D simulation, we demonstrated that the local stress generated by these defects produces equilibrium nano-size martensitic embryos (MEs) in pre-transitional state, these embryos being orientation variants of martensite. This is a new type of equilibrium: the thermoelastic equilibrium between the MEs and parent phase in which the total volume of MEs and their size are equilibrium internal thermodynamic parameters. This thermoelastic equilibrium exists only in presence of the stress-generating defects. Cooling the pre-transitional state towards Ms or applying the external stimuli, stress or magnetic field, results in a shift of the thermoelastic equilibrium provided by a reversible anhysteretic growth of MEs that results in a giant ME-generated macroscopic strain. In particular, this effect can be associated with the diffuse phase transformations observed in some ferroelectrics above the Curie point. It is shown that the ME-generated strain is giant and describes a superelasticity if the applied field is stress. It describes a super magnetostriction if the martensite (or austenite) are ferromagnetic and the applied field is a magnetic field. In general, the material with defects can be a multiferroic with a giant multiferroic response if the parent and martensitic phase have different ferroic properties. Finally the ME-generated strain may explain or, at least, contribute to the Invar and Elinvar effects that are typically observed in pre-transitional austenite. The thermoelastic equilibrium and all these effects exist only if the interaction between the defects and MEs is infinite-range.
