Abstract:In this paper, an approach based on the nonlinear theory of elastic dynamics is proposed to model microstructure evolution in a shape memory alloy patch. The hysteretic dynamics of the patch at the macro-scale is also modeled by employing Hamilton's principle. The elastic potential energy function is constructed as non-convex on the deviatoric strain, and the governing equations are formulated as two coupled wave equations in terms of the two displacement components. Square to rectangle transformations and rectangle variant re-orientations are modeled by simulating the transitions of system states from one stable branch of the non-convex constitutive relation to another. The proposed model allows a robust implementation of conventional finite element analysis with all typical boundary conditions, but with strong nonlinearity. Numerical results for microstructure evolution caused by boundary stress loadings are presented, laminated structures and needle-like microstructures, which are often observed in experimental investigations, are also obtained. Hysteretic dynamics at the macro-scale is presented together with microstructure evolution.

Abstract:A two-dimensional mathematical model is constructed in the present paper, which includes the nonlinear coupling of thermal and mechanical fields. The model is based on a two-dimensional approximation to the dynamics of cubic-to-tetragonal and tetragonal-to-orthorhombic phase transformations in shape memory alloys (SMA). It is shown that the Falk model in the one-dimensional case is a special case of the formulated model. Computational experiments are carried out to analyze thermomechanical wave interactions in a thin long strip by applying the finite volume method, while a laminated microstructure in the patch is simulated by using a genetic algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper we describe a new conservative difference scheme and apply it to the description of the dynamics of a shape memory alloy rod. The scheme preserves the conservation of the total energy on the grid. A major emphasis is given to the description of hysteresis effects in almost-elastic, pseudoelastic and quasiplastic regimes. Stress-strain dependencies are analysed and computational experiments are presented for main thermomechanical characteristics of the material, including displacement and temperature fields.

Abstract:A mathematical model is constructed for modeling the behavior of shape memory alloy (SMA) patches in two dimensions. The effect of phase transformations is included into the model via a specific choice of the free energy functional valid for square-to-rectangular transformations. It is shown that the classical one-dimensional Falk dynamic model, applied to shape memory alloy rods, could be regarded as a special case of the formulated two-dimensional model. The model is analyzed numerically with the method of lines and a series of computational experiments for SMA materials is discussed, in detail, in order to compare the results of simulations to those obtained with conventional one-dimensional models.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive materials with sophisticated yet controllable shape-changing behaviors are highly desirable for real-world device applications. Among various shape-changing materials, the elastic nature of shape memory polymers allows fixation of temporary shapes that can recover on demand, whereas polymers with exchangeable bonds can undergo permanent shape change via plasticity. We integrate the elasticity and plasticity into a single polymer network. Rational molecular design allows these two opposite behaviors to be realized at different temperature ranges without any overlap. By exploring the cumulative nature of the plasticity, we demonstrate easy manipulation of highly complex shapes that is otherwise extremely challenging. The dynamic shape-changing behavior paves a new way for fabricating geometrically complex multifunctional devices.

Abstract:The time-dependent behavior of glass transition can be exploited to achieve shape-memory behavior in amorphous polymers. Modeling the shape-memory effect in polymers requires considering the viscoelastic behavior, structural evolution in response to external stimuli, such as temperature, stress, solvent. Furthermore, the broad spectrum of stress and structural relaxation times are needed to accurately predict the rate-dependent recovery response. In this paper, we review our efforts to develop constitutive models for the glass transition behavior of amorphous polymers to predict the shape-memory behavior under a variety of thermomechanical conditions.

Abstract:Thermoplastic polyolefin elastomers which are soft and easy processing have potential usage for non-structural applications. The thermal, mechanical and shape memory properties of this thermoplastic elastomers were investigated with differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) and dynamic mechanic analysis (DMA). The results showed that was important for the better shape memory with both of the shape fixity rate and shape recovery rate up to 90%can be reached by choosing a proper deforming temperature in a broad range of melting temperature.

Abstract:Solid-state plasticity by dynamic covalent bond exchange in a shape-memory polymer network bestows a permanent shape reconfiguration ability. Spatio-selective control of thermally induced plasticity may further extend the capabilities of materials into unexplored domains. However, this is difficult to achieve because of the lack of spatio-control in typical polymer network synthesis. Metal-ligand interactions possess the high strength of covalent bonds while maintaining the dynamic reversibility of supramolecular bonds. Metallosupramolecular shape-memory polymer networks were designed and prepared, which demonstrated solid-state plasticity. The metallo-coordination bonds within these networks permit facile tuning of the plasticity behavior across a wide temperature range, simply by changing the metal ion. By controlling the diffusion of two different metal ions during preparation of a polymer film, a plasticity behavior with a spatial gradient was achieved, providing a unique shape-morphing versatility with potential in shape-memory devices.

Abstract:Abstract This paper presents a unified modelling effort to describe partial phase transformation during cyclic thermo-mechanical loading in Shape Memory Alloys (SMA). To this purpose, a three-dimensional (3D) finite strain constitutive model considering TRansformation-Induced Plasticity (TRIP) is combined with a modified hardening function to enable the accurate and efficient prediction of partial transformations during cyclic thermo-mechanical loading. The capabilities of the proposed model are demonstrated by predicting the behavior of the material under pseudoelastic and actuation operation using finite element analysis. Numerical results of the modified model are presented and compared with the original model without considering the partial transformation feature as well as with uniaxial actuation experimental data. Various aspects of cyclic material behavior under partial transformation are analyzed and discussed for different SMA systems.

Abstract:The Preisach Model for ferromagnets is generalized and adapted for the description of the hysteretic behaviour of a polycrystalline specimen of shapememory alloys. The thermodynamical properties of the individual crystallites are described by the Landau-Devonshire free energy which contains four parameters. The corresponding quadruplets of parameters of a polycrystalline body fill a region in a four-dimensional Preisach space. A thermodynamical loading path will sweep surfaces across this region and change phases in the process. The physical problem of the response of a specimen to applied loads is thus converted into the geometrical problem of counting volumes between moving surfaces. This conversion facilitates the numerical evaluation of the effect of complicated loading paths.

Abstract:A finite strain phenomenological model is developed to simulate the shape memory behavior of semi-crystalline polymers under thermo-mechanical loading. The polymer is considered to be a composite of crystalline and amorphous phases with constant volume fractions. While the amorphous phase is stable, the crystalline phase is considered to change phase with temperature. Therefore, the crystalline phase is considered further to be composed of two phases, whose volume fractions are controlled by a temperature and strain dependent function: the melted phase which is soft, and the crystallized phase which is stiff. A pressure dependent viscoelasto-plastic behavior is considered for the constitutive model of the different phases. In addition to pressure dependent plasticity, additional deformation measures are applied to the crystalline phase to model temporary (imperfect shape fixity) and permanent (imperfect shape recovery) deformations in a thermo-mechanical loading cycle. Formulating a compressible plastic flow during the phase changes yields the possibility to capture both one-way and two-way shape memory effects. As a consequence, the load-dependent and anisotropic thermal expansion observed experimentally in semi-crystalline polymers during phase change is naturally captured. The model is validated within a test campaign performed on nano-composite having a semi-crystalline polymer as a base material. It is shown that the model gives close results with the tests and it is able to capture the shape fixity and shape recovery behaviors of the polymer, for both one-way and two-way shape memory effects.

Abstract:This paper presents a thermomechanical model for pseudoelastic shape memory alloys (SMAs) accounting for internal hysteresis effect due to incomplete phase transformation. The model is developed within the finite-strain framework, wherein the deformation gradient is multiplicatively decomposed into thermal dilation, rigid body rotation, elastic and transformation parts. Helmholtz free energy density comprises three components: the reversible thermodynamic process, the irreversible thermodynamic process and the physical constraints of both. In order to capture the multiple internal hysteresis loops in SMA, two internal variables representing the transition points of the forward and reverse phase transformation, <span class="mathjax-tex">\(\phi _s^f\)</span> and <span class="mathjax-tex">\(\phi _s^r\)</span>, are introduced to describe the incomplete phase transformation process. Evolution equations of the internal variables are derived and linked to the phase transformation. Numerical implementation of the model features an Euler discretization and a cutting-plane algorithm. After validation of the model against the experimental data, numerical examples are presented, involving a SMA-based vibration system and a crack SMA specimen subjected to partial loading–unloading case. Simulation results well demonstrate the internal hysteresis and free vibration behavior of SMA.

Abstract:In this work, a new micromechanical constitutive model is constructed for high-temperature shape memory alloys. Different from the classical constitutive models, the microstructural patterns, heterogeneities of stress and strain fields at the microscopic scale are addressed. In the proposed model, three different inelastic deformation mechanisms, i.e., reversible martensitic transformation, irreversible transformation-induced plasticity, viscoplasticity, as well as their complex interactions, are considered. In addition to the well-known austenite and martensite phases, a new austenite-martensite interface phase is introduced to address the high local stress induced by the martensitic transformation. The modified Mori-Tanaka's homogenization scheme and Hill's interfacial operator are employed to determine the non-uniform stress fields of the three phases. To satisfy the thermodynamic compatibility of the proposed model, the driving forces and evolution equations of the three inelastic deformation mechanisms are derived based on the constructed Helmholtz free energy and the fundamental laws of irreversible thermodynamics. Inheritances of the plastic deformation induced by moving austenite-martensite (A-M) interface during repeated martensitic transformation and its reverse are incorporated. Temperature evolution caused by internal heat production and heat exchange with the ambient medium is also addressed. To validate the capability of the new constructed model, the predicted results of creep behavior and stress-assisted two-way shape memory effect of NiTiPd high-temperature shape memory alloys are compared with the experimental ones. The proposed model provides a theoretical tool for simultaneously analyzing the deformation behaviors at the macroscopic scale and underlying mechanisms at the microscopic scale.

Abstract:Phase diagrams supported by density functional theory methods can be crucial for designing high-entropy alloys that are subset of multi-principal-element alloys. We present phase and property analysis of quinary (MoW)xZry(TaTi)1-x-y refractory high-entropy alloys from combined Calculation of Phase Diagram (CALPHAD) and density-functional theory results, supplemented by molecular dynamics simulations. Both CALPHAD and density-functional theory analysis of phase stability indicates a Mo-W-rich region of this quinary has a stable single-phase body-centered-cubic structure. We report first quinary composition from Mo-W-Ta-Ti-Zr family of alloy with pseudo-elastic behavior, i.e., hysteresis in stress-strain. Our analysis shows that only Mo-W-rich compositions of Mo-W-Ta-Ti-Zr, i.e., Mo+W≥85at.%, show reproducible hysteresis in stress-strain responsible for pseudo-elastic behavior. The (MoW)85Zr7.5(TaTi)7.5 was down-selected based on temperature-dependent phase diagram analysis and molecular dynamics simulations predicted elastic behavior that reveals twinning-assisted pseudoelastic behavior. While mostly unexplored in body-centered-cubic crystals, twinning is a fundamental deformation mechanism that competes against dislocation slip in crystalline solids. This alloy shows identical cyclic deformation characteristics during uniaxial <100> loading, i.e., the pseudoelasticity is isotropic in loading direction. Additionally, a temperature increase from 77 to 1,500 K enhances the elastic strain recovery in load-unload cycles, offering possibly control to tune the pseudoelastic behavior.

Abstract:The stress-strain hysteresis at various temperatures was investigated experimentally here for Cu-Zn-Al polycrystalline SMAs, besides, numerical simulations of the pseudoelastic hysteresis were performed based on a model that had been already proposed by the authors. As observed in the experiments, the shapes of the outer loops varies strongly from specimen to specimen, which have the same chemical composition but different heat-treatment. Rather complicated inner hysteretic curves were observed at testing temperature higher than Af. It was found that the numerical simulations of the stress-strain hysteresis and the inner hysteretic curves agree well with the experimental ones, hence can be used for calculating and predicting the complex inner hysteretic behavior of SMAs with a reasonable accuracy.

Abstract:Many engineering applications of Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) involve passing back and forth through phase transformation many times. Repeated phase transformation develops permanent deformations originating from the significant distortion that phase transformation induces at the austenite-martensite interfaces and grain boundaries. This distortion drives dislocation activity resulting in an observable macroscopic Transformation-Induced Plastic (TRIP) deformation, which occurs at effective stress levels much lower than the plastic yield limit of the material. TRIP strains may accumulate up to 20% during the lifetime of an SMA component and thus a finite strain constitutive model is required for simulating their response. In this work, a 3-D finite strain model is developed based on logarithmic strain which is the only strain measure whose rate is equal to the stretching, that describes phase transformation and TRIP deformation in a thermodynamically consistent setting. The model is implemented in Abaqus finite element software through a user-defined material subroutine (UMAT). Boundary value problems such as strip and a torque tube under both pseudoelastic and actuation cyclic loadings are performed to test the capabilities of the newly proposed model.
