Abstract:The time-dependent behavior of glass transition can be exploited to achieve shape-memory behavior in amorphous polymers. Modeling the shape-memory effect in polymers requires considering the viscoelastic behavior, structural evolution in response to external stimuli, such as temperature, stress, solvent. Furthermore, the broad spectrum of stress and structural relaxation times are needed to accurately predict the rate-dependent recovery response. In this paper, we review our efforts to develop constitutive models for the glass transition behavior of amorphous polymers to predict the shape-memory behavior under a variety of thermomechanical conditions.

Abstract:Shape memory polymers have attracted increasing research interest due to their capability of fixing a temporary shape and associated deformation energy then releasing them later on demand. Recently, it has been reported that polymers with a broad thermomechanical transition temperature range can demonstrate a multi-shape memory effect (m-SME), where shape recovery and energy release occur in a stepped manner during free recovery. This paper investigated the underlying physical mechanisms for these observed shape memory behaviors and the associated energy storage and release by using a theoretical modeling approach. A multibranch model, which is similar to the generalized standard linear solid model of viscoelasticity, was used for a quantitative analysis. In this model, individual nonequilibrium branches represent different relaxation modes of polymer chains with different relaxation times. As the temperature was increased in a staged manner, for a given temperature, different numbers of branches (or relaxation modes) became shape memory active or inactive, leading to the observed m-SME. For energy release during free recovery, under a tensile deformation of the SMP, stored energy in individual nonequilibrium branches was first transferred into a compressive deformation energy, then gradually declined to zero. Energy release during recovery was a complicated process due to the involvement of multiple relaxation modes.

Abstract:In this study, we present a constitutive model to couple the shape memory and dielectric behaviors of polymers. The model adopted multiple relaxation processes and temperature-dependent relaxation time to describe the glass transition behaviors. The model was applied to simulate the thermal-mechanical-electrical behaviors of the dielectric elastomer VHB 4905. We investigated the influence of deformation temperature, voltage rate, relaxation time on the electromechanical and shape-memory behavior of dielectric elastomers. This work provides a method for combining the shape-memory properties and electroactive polymers, which can expand the applications of these soft active materials.

Abstract:ABSTRACTWe present an experimental and modeling study of the effect of programming conditions on the shape‐memory behaviors of amorphous thermoplastic polymers. Experimentally we measure the influence of deformation temperature, strain rate and relaxation time on the thermomechanical properties and shape‐memory response of poly(para‐phenylene), which is a stiff and strong aromatic thermoplastic. To understand the underlying mechanism, we develop a viscoelastic model, which contains multiple discrete relaxation processes with broad distribution of relaxation time. The model parameters of the relaxation spectrum are obtained from the master curve of small strain–stress relaxation tests using time‐temperature superposition. The model predictions show good agreement with experimental observations, including the stress response and shape‐memory response under various conditions. We applied the model to study the effect of the programming conditions on the shape recovery performance. The results show that the relaxation modulus at the end of the programming process was a predictor of the recovery speed and recoverable strain ratio. Abstract:A polymer triple-shape memory effect represents one of the most recent discoveries in the rapidly expanding field of shape memory polymers. It refers to the capability of a polymer to memorize two temporary shapes and subsequently recover them, all in one shape memory cycle. Although several examples of triple-shape polymers had been reported in the literature, they were notably evaluated under very different thermo-mechanical conditions. In this study, the effect of various thermo-mechanical conditions on the polymer triple-shape properties was investigated using Nafion as a model material. The choice of the programming and recovery heating methods in constructing triple-shape cycles was found to have a profound impact on the triple-shape properties. As such, the results of this study provided useful reference for future development of triple-shape polymers.

Abstract:For amorphous polymers, the thermally-activated and solvent-activated shape-memory effect share the same physical mechanism. The programmed shape can be recovered either by increasing the environment temperature above the activation temperature (thermally-activated mechanism) or decreasing the activation temperature below the ambient temperature (solvent-activated mechanism). An equivalent role exists for solvent and heat in activating shape recovery. Based on this assumption, we presented a method to simulate solvent-activated shape-memory behaviors through the widely available models developed for the thermally-activated mechanism. The recovery in the solvent was treated as increasing the temperature of the specimen, while the diffusion of the solvent into the polymer matrix was analogous to heat conduction. The model was employed to simulate the solvent-activated temperature memory effect of Nafion in acetone and ethanol. The model predictions showed good agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:We present a constitutive model for the effect of solvent absorption on the thermomechanical properties and shape-memory behavior of amorphous polymers. The absorption of low concentrations of solvent depresses the glass transition temperature by increasing the molecular mobility of the polymer chains. In a shape-memory application, this can lead to premature shape recovery and significant alterations to the time-dependence and temperature-dependence of shape recovery. We implemented the constitutive model for finite element analysis and developed a computational model that considered the time-dependent effect of diffusion to study the solvent-induced shape-memory behavior of a meth(acrylate) copolymer network. The model was validated by comparing to isothermal shape recovery experiments of specimens in air and water at different temperatures.

Abstract:Chemically-responsive amorphous shape-memory polymers (SMPs) can transit from the temporary shape to the permanent shape in responsive to solvents. This effect has been reported in various polymer-solvent systems. However, limited attention has been paid to the constitutive modeling of this behavior. In this work, we develop a fully thermo-chemomechanical coupled thermodynamic framework for the chemically-responsive amorphous SMPs. The framework shows that the entropy, the chemical potential and the stress can be directly obtained if the Helmholtz free energy density is defined. Based on the entropy inequality, the evolution equation for the viscous strain, the temperature and the number of solvent molecules are also derived. We also provide an explicit form of Helmholtz free energy density as an example. In addition, based on the free volume concept, the dependence of viscosity and diffusivity on the temperature and solvent concentration is defined. The theoretical framework can potentially advance the fundamental understanding of chemically-responsive shape-memory effect. Meanwhile, it can also be used to describe other important physical processes such as the diffusion of solvents in glassy polymers.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive materials with sophisticated yet controllable shape-changing behaviors are highly desirable for real-world device applications. Among various shape-changing materials, the elastic nature of shape memory polymers allows fixation of temporary shapes that can recover on demand, whereas polymers with exchangeable bonds can undergo permanent shape change via plasticity. We integrate the elasticity and plasticity into a single polymer network. Rational molecular design allows these two opposite behaviors to be realized at different temperature ranges without any overlap. By exploring the cumulative nature of the plasticity, we demonstrate easy manipulation of highly complex shapes that is otherwise extremely challenging. The dynamic shape-changing behavior paves a new way for fabricating geometrically complex multifunctional devices.

Abstract:Shape memory polymers (SMPs), as a class of programmable stimuli-responsive shape changing polymers, are attracting increasing attention from the standpoint of both fundamental research and technological innovations. Following a brief introduction of the conventional shape memory effect (SME), progress in new shape memory enabling mechanisms and triggering methods, variations of in shape memory forms (shape memory surfaces, hydrogels, and microparticles), new shape memory behavior (multi-SME and two-way-SME), and novel fabrication methods are reviewed. Progress in thermomechanical modeling of SMPs is also presented.
Tunable Shape-Memory Behaviors in Amorphous Polymers Through Bound Solvent

Abstract:Shape-memory polymers (SMP) have been widely applied in biomedical areas as vascular stents, occlusion devices, fracture fixators, etc. The shape recovery region is the key factor for the performance of the SMP-based devices. In this paper, we describe a feasible method to tune the shape-recovery region of amorphous polymers. A lightly crosslinked acrylate polymer is synthesized and treated by isopropyl alcohol for a different amount of time. The dynamic mechanical analysis shows that the glass transition region is lowered by 25-75 degrees C through varying the immersion time in isopropyl alcohol. The dry and wet polymers all show excellent thermally-induced shape-memory behaviors, while the shape-recovery region can be adjusted as much as 70 degrees C. The method is universal, which can be applied to other polymer-solvent systems to achieve tunable shape-memory behaviors. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Traditional shape memory polymers (SMPs) are those capable of memorizing a temporary shape and recovering to the permanent shape upon heating. Although such a basic concept has been known for half a century, recent progresses have challenged the conventional understanding of the polymer shape memory effect and significantly expanded the practical potential of SMPs. In this article, notable recent advances in the field of SMPs are highlighted. Particular emphasis is placed on how the new developments have changed the conventional view of SMPs, what they mean for practical applications, and where the future opportunities are.

Abstract:Shape-memory polymers (SMPs) are able to perform shape transitions in a pre-defined pathway in response to suitable external stimuli such as heat, magnetism, electricity, moisture, or light. Most of the SMPs are dual-shape materials, which enable a single shape transition from a temporary to a permanent shape. Recently, triple-shape polymers (TSPs), which are capable of accomplishing two shape transitions, as well as multi-shape polymers with shape changes have been introduced including temperature-memory polymers (TMPs) with tunable multiple shape transitions. Different concepts for obtaining multi-shape polymers are introduced and the sophisticated structural design concepts in combination with tailored shape-memory creation processes (SMCPs) are explained. Future opportunities emerge in alternative actuation methods and exploration of potential applications.

Abstract:Device applications of shape memory polymers demand diverse shape changing geometries, which are currently limited to non-omnidirectional movement. This restriction originates from traditional thermomechanical programming methods such as uniaxial, biaxial stretching, bending, or compression. A solvent-modulated programming method is reported to achieve an omnidirectional shape memory behavior. The method utilizes freeze drying of hydrogels of polyethylene glycol networks with a melting transition temperature around 50 °C in their dry state. Such a process creates temporarily fixed macroporosity, which collapses upon heating, leading to significant omnidirectional shrinkage. These shrunken materials can swell in water to form hydrogels again and the omnidirectional programming and recovery can be repeated. The fixity ratio (R f ) and recovery ratio (R r ) can be maintained at 90% and 98% respectively upon shape memory multicycling. The maximum linear recoverable strain, as limited by the maximum swelling, is ≈90%. Amongst various application potentials, one can envision the fabrication of multiphase composites by taking advantages of the omnidirectional shrinkage from a porous polymer to a denser structure.

Abstract:Getting back into shape Shape memory polymers have been known for at least half a century. When deformed at a temperature defined by a specific phase transition, these materials retain the new shape on cooling, but regain their original shape on reheating. Currently known shape memory polymers are capable of memorizing one or two temporary shapes, and the starting shape. Now Tao Xie, working at the General Motors Research and Development Center in Warren, Michigan, reports a material that has at least a quadruple shape memory effect — that's three 'new' shapes plus the original. The material is perfluorosulphonic acid (PFSA or Nafion), a commercial ionomer that has been extensively studied due to its application as a fuel-cell proton exchange membrane. Its broad reversible phase transition means that the shape memory effect is highly tunable, without the need for chemical alteration.

Abstract:Thermally-activated temperature memory and multiple shape memory effects have been observed in amorphous polymers with a broad glass transition. In this work, we demonstrate that the same shape recovery behaviors can also be achieved through solvent absorption. We investigate the recovery behaviors of programmed Nafion membranes in various solvents and compare the solvent-driven and temperature-driven shape recovery response. The results show that the programming temperature and solvent type have a corresponding strong influence on the shape recovery behavior. Specifically, lower programming temperatures induce faster initial recovery rates and larger recovery, which is known as the temperature memory effect. The temperature memory effect can be used to achieve multi-staged and multiple shape recovery of specimens programmed at different temperatures. Different solvents can also induce different shape recovery, analogous to the temperature memory effect, and can also provide a mechanism for multi-staged and multiple shape memory recovery.

Abstract:Following deformation, thermally induced shape memory polymers(SMPs) have the ability to recover their original shape with a change in temperature. In this work, the thermomechanical properties and shape memory behaviors of three types of epoxy SMPs with varying curing agent contents were investigated using a molecular dynamics(MD) method. The mechanical properties under uniaxial tension at different temperatures were obtained, and the simulation results compared reasonably with experimental data. In addition, in a thermomechanical cycle, ideal shape memory effects for the three types of SMPs were revealed through the shape frozen and shape recovery responses at low and high temperatures, respectively, indicating that the recovery time is strongly influenced by the ratio of E-51 to 4,4’-Methylenedianiline.

Abstract:The low recovery stress has limited utilizing shape-memory polymers (SMPs) as actuators. In this work, we demonstrate that the resultant recovery stress of amorphous SMPs can be significantly increased through cold programming. A three-dimensional model is formulated to describe the thermo-mechanical behavior and shape-memory performance of amorphous polymers in large deformation. The constitutive relationship is derived based on the two-temperature thermodynamic framework employing an effective temperature as a thermodynamic state variable to describe the nonequilibrium structure of amorphous polymers. The model also incorporates the molecular orientation with a relaxation mechanism to describe strain hardening. The model is applied to simulate the stress-strain relationship and stress relaxation behaviors of an amorphous SMP in the programming process and the stress response in the constrained recovery process. The model can accurately reproduce the measured stress response at different temperatures and loading rates. Both experimental and simulation results show that polymers deformed at a larger loading rate exhibit a lower stress in the holding period, though simulation pronouncedly underestimates the magnitude of stress drop in the stress relaxation process. The model also captures the magnitude and location of the peak stress during the constrained recovery process for SMPs programmed at different temperatures and with different applied strains.

Abstract:Solid-state plasticity by dynamic covalent bond exchange in a shape-memory polymer network bestows a permanent shape reconfiguration ability. Spatio-selective control of thermally induced plasticity may further extend the capabilities of materials into unexplored domains. However, this is difficult to achieve because of the lack of spatio-control in typical polymer network synthesis. Metal-ligand interactions possess the high strength of covalent bonds while maintaining the dynamic reversibility of supramolecular bonds. Metallosupramolecular shape-memory polymer networks were designed and prepared, which demonstrated solid-state plasticity. The metallo-coordination bonds within these networks permit facile tuning of the plasticity behavior across a wide temperature range, simply by changing the metal ion. By controlling the diffusion of two different metal ions during preparation of a polymer film, a plasticity behavior with a spatial gradient was achieved, providing a unique shape-morphing versatility with potential in shape-memory devices.

Abstract:ABSTRACTA temperature memory effect means a shape‐memory material can remember its deformation temperature. In general, a higher deformation temperature requires a higher activation temperature for shape recovery. In this work, we demonstrate that the unloading temperature can also significantly influence the shape‐memory performance. A series of shape‐memory tests are performed on Nafion while varying the loading and unloading temperatures. The results show that the loading temperature determines the final shape‐recovery region, while the unloading temperature influences the onset recovery region. We also develop a finite‐deformation viscoelastic model to investigate the above findings. The simulation results show good agreement with the experimental data, though the model predicts the recovery region occurring at a lower temperature. The model is further used to study the effects of the loading rate, unloading rate, and the holding time on the shape‐memory behaviors. The results suggest that a smaller loading rate and unloading rate and a longer holding time can shift the recovery region to a higher temperature. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym.
