Abstract:In order to study the factors influencing insulators' contamination deposition, we gathered the dimensions of some post insulators and set up numerical models for wind tunnel simulation. On the basis of the theory of computational fluid dynamics, we discussed four factors that affect the trapped mass of insulators. It is concluded that the concentration of particles has a linear function on the taped mass of the insulator surface. Higher wind velocity will lead to more trapped mass on both the top surfaces and the bottom surfaces of insulators, though different profiles of the top and bottom surfaces can result in distinct tends. Meanwhile, growth in the mean diameter of particles will increase the trapped mass of the top surfaces but barely affects the bottom surface. Moreover, for any certain shape of insulator, increasing the diameter of insulator rod significantly will reduce the density of contamination deposition. Further comparison indicates a considerable difference between the simulation results and some reported experimental data from wind tunnel tests, which is probably due to the insufficient consideration of the adhesion effect in the simulations.

Abstract:The electrification mechanism during particle fluidization is complex, and developing a reliable contact electrification model requires addressing many issues, especially the valuations of the charging efficiency and the critical gap for the electron tunnelling. This work aims to utilize the modelling of the simplest normal contact electrification between insulator particle and metal surface as an attempt to explore methods for the valuations of the critical gap and charging efficiency. A contact electrification model is developed based on the condenser model. The appropriate expressions for the contact potential difference and charge relaxation are discussed by reviewing previous works; the valuations of critical gap and charging efficiency are implemented by analyzing the effect of initial charge and impact velocity on the transferred charge. The model is validated by the published experimental results, and accurately predicts the electrification during the normal collision of the insulator particle on the metal surface.
Contamination Prediction on Insulators Considering of Meteorology,Geomentric Parameters and Air Pollutant

Abstract:In order to develop a model to predict the severity of contamination deposition whieh could take account of the effects of the meteorology, geometric parameters of insulators, and air pollutant ,we studied the contamination deposition characteristics of post insulators by means of computanational fluid dynamics.Moreover, we analyzed the chemical composition of salt in pollutant on insulators.The results demonstrate that as the wind speed grows, the contamination on the bottom suface rises and remains about the 80％ of the maxmium value, while the contamination on the top sufaces increaces first and then decreases.Moreover, the contamination deposition grows as the relative humidity gets bigger, but it will be less than five times of the value as the relative humidity is 30％.The chemcial composition of the salt contamination on insulators is uniform in the same region.At last, the model is verified with an example, and it is revealed that if the relief effect of rainfall is thought over, the predicted value will be less than four times the samples' mesured value at its worst condition.The proposed new method of contamination prediction can be used for a reference for further researches.

Abstract:When it comes to safety accidents in power system, pollution flashover often causes more economic loss because of its large impact area and long impact time. To understand the contamination characteristics of insulators and predict the state of pollution, a typical insulator's contamination model in wind tunnel was established with Multiphysics simulation software, and a feature particle tracking method was proposed based on sample survey and feature particle analysis. The unitary pollution characteristics of insulator can be judged from the weighted average tracking results of sample particles with single particle size and charge amount. Based on this foundation, the effects of AC and DC electric fields were taken into consideration to analyze the influence of different kind of electric field on insulator contamination. The simulation results show that DC electric field has a significant effect on insulator fouling under the condition of weak wind and large particle size.

Abstract:With the widespread application of composite insulators in transmission lines, exploring the accumulation mechanism of pollution particles on composite insulator surfaces is of importance to ensure the safe and steady operation of the power system. Addressing the current theoretical shortcomings, this study categorises the accumulation process of particles on the insulator surface into three stages, namely 'spatial motion', 'surface collision', and 'surface motion'. The motion and rotation velocities in a multi‐physics field are calculated in the spatial motion stage. In the surface collision stage, a parameter called 'neck height' is introduced to determine the optimum mechanics theory, and the normal deposition criterion is established. For the surface motion stage, the sliding displacement and rolling displacement on the surface are calculated based on the rotation speed of the particles. A dynamic pollution accumulation model of the composite insulator is established based on the normal deposition criterion and tangential displacement. Finally, numerical simulations are performed by using the finite element method. Simulation results show that the proposed model agrees with the actual insulator pollution accumulation, and the deposition model is still applicable for various types of composite insulators operating in different applied voltages. The deposition probability of particles increases with the increasing particle size. In the surface motion stage, particle displacement increases with particle size and wind velocity.

Abstract:In recent years, the frequent occurrence of fog and haze in China has attracted increasing attention in the field of electrical insulation. Fog-haze weather is an extreme weather condition with high humidity, high concentrations of suspended particulate matter, and sometimes high conductivity. This exacerbates insulator surface contamination and moistens the contamination layer, which may lead to flashover incidents. Here, an experimental system was established to simulate the fog-haze environment under controlled and tunable conditions. Simulated contamination tests were then conducted using three typical insulators. The influence of insulator type and environmental parameters was investigated. Test results showed that higher humidity led to faster pollution accumulation for all three insulators. Moreover, equivalent salt deposit density (ESDD) on the surface increased linearly with increasing fog conductivity, and that on the upper surface rose faster. The ESDD increased significantly under AC voltage, especially on the lower surface. Finally, insulator contamination was studied in a real-world fog-haze environment with periodic measurement of the ESDD and environmental parameters. The ESDD showed a good correlation with the PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations. This work should have relevance for the external insulation of the power grid to resist the effects of fog and haze.
Temporal and spatial characteristics of soluble salt components accreted on the insulator surface

Abstract:Due to the differences in typical pollution sources, the soluble salt composition deposited on the naturally contaminated insulators varies with the region. As different soluble salts have different effects on the pollution flashover voltage of insulators, it is necessary to investigate the spatial and temporal distribution of the soluble salt composition deposited on the insulator surface to make the external insulation design more scientifically and reasonably. In this study, an artificial contamination test platform was built to collect the contamination naturally deposited on the specimens. The test results showed that the contamination composition deposited on the specimen was similar to that in the atmosphere, and the inclination angle of the specimen and the duration of pollution deposition had little influence on the contamination composition. After examining the industrial post insulators from actual substations, it was found that the contamination composition was almost the same for different insulator surface materials, insulator shed types, and voltage polarities. It was also found that the deposited contamination was mostly influenced by pollution sources. The results can provide a reference for the studies of pollution distribution of natural insulators.
Dust contamination on surface of transmission line insulators in air-polluted regions in China: statistical characteristics, adhesion mechanism, and environmental impact factors

Abstract:Dust particles suspended in the atmosphere have been a big headache for electric power transmission industry in China. As transmission lines pass through dusty or air-polluted areas, dust contaminants are likely to deposit and accumulate on line insulators, which is one of the greatest causes of flashover and failure of power transmission. To study the statistical characteristics of this type of contamination, dust samples were collected and measured, and a physical model was set up to explain the deposition and accumulation mechanism of the particles. The trajectories of particles were tracked using fluid mechanics and contact mechanics, and an adhesion criterion was proposed. Simulation software was then applied to validate the model; further different environmental factors were studied that would affect the particle size distribution. The results show that under natural contamination conditions, the particle size distribution on the surface of the insulator shows a certain concentration at size ranges 1~100 μm and basically obeys a log-normal distribution. In addition, relative humidity, air velocity, and the charge accumulated on the surface all have significant influences on particle size distribution characteristics, while the effect of the electric field is mainly reflected in the difference in the number concentration of particle adhesion.

Abstract:To solve the problem of contamination flashover of a catenary insulator in an electrified railway, the collision mechanism and deposition characteristics of contamination particles on the insulator surface should be studied to ensure the safe operation of traction power supply systems. This research used horizontal and oblique cantilever insulators as objects, and established the collision model between particles and insulator surface under different arrangements. The deposition conditions of particles on the insulator surface were obtained, and the simulation model of insulator contamination accumulation was established by using the Euler two-phase flow. The difference of contamination deposition characteristics between horizontal and oblique cantilever insulators was analyzed with the volume fraction of contamination particles as the characterization parameter. By comparing the cantilever insulator with the positive feeder insulator, this study analyzed the influence of shed structure on the contamination deposition characteristics. Results show that the installation method of an insulator has an impact on the contamination deposition on the insulator surface. When particle size and wind velocity are fixed, the degree of contamination accumulation on the surface of the oblique cantilever insulator is constantly higher than that of the horizontal cantilever insulator. The insulator shed structure also has a certain effect on the contamination deposition on the insulator surface. For the cantilever insulator, the degree of contamination accumulation of the windward side is higher than that of the leeward side. However, for the positive feeder insulator, the degree of contamination accumulation of the windward side is consistently less than that of the leeward side. Measures to deal with contamination flashover of catenary insulator are proposed.

Abstract:In recent years, the use of composite station insulators has increased significantly. Field experience shows that the pollution accumulation on the surface of these insulators with larger diameters is less than that of composite line insulators with smaller diameters. The less pollution accumulation is beneficial for increasing pollution flashover voltage and improving long-term performances of the insulators. But at present, the experience in the influence of diameter on the pollution accumulation is only based on some measurement results, and its mechanism has not been analyzed in depth. In this paper, the three-dimensional CFD models of composite insulators with different diameters were built. The air flow field around the composite insulator was simulated by Fluent software. The collision rate between pollution particles and insulator surface was calculated. The simulation results show that the larger the insulator diameter is, the smoother the air flow around the insulator is, and the smaller the collision rate becomes. This can explain the less pollution accumulation of composite station insulators observed in the field.

Abstract:The contamination characteristics of composite insulators are different with porcelain and glass insulators and research about its contamination characteristics is of great significance to prevent pollution flashover. Thus, three ±500kV DC composite insulators in service were selected for test. The contamination density of different places along the insulators was measured and characterized by ESDD and NSDD. Experimental results indicate that the ESDD and NSDD of upper and lower surfaces of different sheds along the insulators commonly distribute as U-shape, especially for ESDD, and the regularities of different places on the insulators are different. With the discussion about the influence of electric fields in the contamination process and the influence of rainfall in the cleaning process, the regularity of contamination along DC composite insulators is better explained.

Abstract:Contamination flashover problem has threatened the security and stability of transmission lines for a long time.The coastal environment,as a special one of our complex and diverse geographical environment,is much easier to achieve the transmission line flashover accident conditions.Some transmission lines also have this hidden trouble even after a short period of cleaning contamination on the surface of insulators.In order to study the insulator surface contamination status,to give a comprehensive evaluation of the pollution discharge factors,and to achieve the purpose of preventing pollution flashover,the pollution discharge of Jinghua and Jingliang 220 kV transmission lines in Jieyang Guangdong Province has been studied,the accident site in the area of environmental conditions has been examined,ESDD of contamination and ion analysis of the salt has been measured as well as SEM and TGA of contamination has been carried on.

Abstract:The usage of composite insulators in various contaminated areas is increasing prominently in recent years. Most of composite insula-tors are operating in heavy or medium pollution environment in China. As the exposure time in the field prolonging, the change of hydrophobicity and the build-up of pollution layer directly affect pollution performance of the composite insulators. This paper is based on the work of investigation on the pollution performance and aging of nearly 40 composite insulators operated in Jiamusi city, the north east area of China. These composite insulators were removed from 110 kV lines, and they are all made of HTV silicone rubber and mostly are in service for nine years. Four aspects of hydrophobicity of these insulators are studied after the measurement of pollution status.

Abstract:In this paper, method and device Used for evaluating the contamination condition on the surface of composite insulator was proposed. The method proposed in this paper considered the hydrophobicity and pollution degree on the surface of composite insulator at the same time. Under the condition of different basic Salt deposit density and different migration time the suitability of dissolution Salt deposit density method was studied. The test results show that the dissolution Salt deposit density with the increasing of migration time gradually reduced at the same basic Salt deposit density. The dissolution salt deposit density with the increasing of basic Salt deposit density gradually increases at the same migration time. It is found that the dissolution salt deposit density method proposed in this paper can well evaluate the contamination condition on the surface of composite insulator.

Abstract:In order to study the influences of different factors on the contamination accumulation characteristics of insulator, the test platform was developed in this paper. The test platform mainly contains two parts, which are artificial haze simulation test chamber and insulator contamination accumulation platform. The artificial haze simulation test chamber consists of test area, circulating air duct and wind turbine. The insulator contamination accumulation platform consists of two parts: the power box and the insulator rack. Test results show that this development test platform can control the environmental conditions and the particle concentration of the test area, provide test voltages with different types and levels and hang different insulators. It can be used to explore the influences of different factors on the contamination accumulation characteristics of insulators. On this basis, a preliminary experiment is also conducted to investigate the influence of different types of voltage on the contaminant characteristics of suspended glass insulators.

Abstract:Artificial simulation of rapid insulator contamination can obtain the contamination characteristics of suspension insulators in a short time, providing important reference for the electrical design, operation and maintenance of external insulation. To obtain the contamination characteristics of insulators closer to those under the natural environment, this paper proposed a test method for artificial simulation of rapid natural contamination of insulators using the characteristic parameters of straight-flow wind tunnel, and carried out the artificial rapid natural contamination test of cap and pin insulators under different wind speeds, wind directions, contamination duration and contaminant concentrations. The test results showed that with the wind speed increasing from 2.2 m/s to 7.5 m/s, the contamination degree of insulator surface gradually increased firstly and then decreased, and reached the maximum near 4.5 m/s. With the increase in contaminant concentration, the contamination degree of insulator surface increased, and tended to be saturated when the dust spreading speed was 54 g/min. With the extension of contamination duration, the contaminant accumulation on insulator surface was slow in the initial stage, accelerated in the middle stage, and then slowed down and gradually saturated in the later stage. Under the same contamination conditions, standard, double-shed and triple-shed insulators presented high-to-low equivalent salt deposit density (ESDD) successively on their top and bottom surfaces, and the ratios of ESDD on the top and bottom surfaces were 1:1.20:0.9 and 1:0.63:0.53, respectively.

Modeling of Dry Band Formation and Arcing Processes on the Polluted Composite Insulator Surface

Abstract:This paper modeled the dry band formation and arcing processes on the composite insulator surface to investigate the mechanism of dry band arcing and optimize the insulator geometry. The model calculates the instantaneous electric and thermal fields before and after arc initialization by a generalized finite difference time domain (GFDTD) method. This method improves the field calculation accuracy at a high precision requirement area and reduces the computational complexity at a low precision requirement area. Heat transfer on the insulator surface is evaluated by a thermal energy balance equation to simulate a dry band formation process. Flashover experiments were conducted under contaminated conditions to verify the theoretical model. Both simulation and experiments results show that dry bands were initially formed close to high voltage (HV) and ground electrodes because the electric field and leakage current density around electrode are higher when compared to other locations along the insulator creepage distance. Three geometry factors (creepage factor, shed angle, and alternative shed ratio) were optimized when the insulator creepage distances remained the same. Fifty percent flashover voltage and average duration time from dry band generation moment to flashover were calculated to evaluate the insulator performance under contaminated conditions. This model analyzes the dry band arcing process on the insulator surface and provides detailed information for engineers in composite insulator design.

Effect of the Electric Field on the Contamination Accumulation Characteristic of the Insulators

Abstract:Contamination accumulation characteristic of the insulators depends on the kinetic characteristic of the particles moving around the insulators to a great degree.We researched the effect of different factors on the dust particles' motion by means of experiments and numerical calculation.The effect of electric field was researched by coaxial electrode model experiments.A simplified 2D axial symmetric calculation model was built to simulate the dust particles' trajectories under the composite effect of the polarization force,the electric field force,the steady-state drag force and the gravitational force.The simulation resulted in good coincidence with the experimental phenomenon.In the end,the distribution of the electric field and the electric potential around an actual EHVDC insulator was calculated.The results are as bellow: The polarization force is very weak and can not influence the dust particles' motion but make the particles' adhesion to the insulator's surface firmer.The charged dust particles deflect along the electric field line driven by the electric field force,and the direction of the electric field between the insulator's sheds is almost perpendicular to the sheds' surface,so the electric field force can promote the precipitation of the dust particles on the dc insulators.When wind is strong,the steady-state drag force dominates and the particles move with the wind.The contamination accumulation characteristic of different insulators under different operating conditions can be better explained on the basis of the effect of the electric field on the dust particles' motion.

Abstract:At the Kunming Natural Contamination Testing Station we chose the common Porcelain insulator, Glass insulator and Composite insulator to study the natural characteristics of insulators contamination hang by the way of I-string and V-string under two conditions of on-load DC power and AC power. We not only chose the regular Scrubbing method to measure the ESDD and NSDD, we also chose the new method of the conductivity of partial surface to study the natural contamination characteristics, the changing of natural insulator contamination with time has been determined, the ratio under DC and AC of ESDD and NSDD and the ratio of NSDD and ESDD was also determined. The research results showed out the differences of the ESDD, NSDD and partial surface conductivity, which provided a theoretical and experimental basis for the future UHV DC transmission line construction and flashover pressure test of artificial contamination.
