Abstract:It is crucial to fully understand the degradation law of commercial LiFePO 4 lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in terms of their health and safety status under different operating conditions, as well as the degradation mechanism and influencing factors. This work investigates the evolution patterns of cycling performance in commercial LiFePO 4 batteries under different operating conditions, including temperature, electrolyte, charge/discharge rate, and depth of cycling. Structure characterization tests on electrode materials before and after long-term cycles have been carried out to elucidate the failure/degradation mechanisms during battery operation. It has been found that it is a comprehensive effect from different operation conditions that results in performance degradation. Fe element shuttling and Li deposition may cause internal decay of LiFePO 4 LIBs. Additionally, working temperatures and the rate and depth of discharge (DOD) should be strictly controlled to achieve high energy retention and long life. This study proposes a perspective that explores the impact of internal and external factors on the degradation of the safety performance in LiFePO 4 LIBs, with the aim of improving the safe and stable operation of large-scale LiFePO 4 LIB energy storage systems, as it is favorable to unravel their complex multi-dimensional evolution mechanism and coupling effects throughout their life cycle.

Abstract:In this study, the deterioration of lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) /graphite batteries during cycling at different discharge rates and temperatures is examined, and the degradation under high-rate discharge (10C) cycling is extensively investigated using full batteries combining with post-mortem analysis. The results show that high discharge current results in an instability of electrode/electrolyte interface and unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers are expected to form on the newly exposed graphite anode surface, which cause sustainable consumption of active lithium and further lead to the performance degradation of active materials. For LiFePO4 cathode, the initial capacity is largely recovered under low rate (0.1-0.2C), whereas a decline in the capability is observed at higher rates (0.5-3.0C). For graphite anode, half-cell study shows that considerable capacity loss occurs even at low rates. A small amount of Fe deposition is observed on graphite anode after cycling under 10C discharge at 55 degrees C. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis confirms that a layer composed of lithium compounds is formed on the surface of anode, which can not participate in the reversible electrochemical reaction again. In addition, electrochemical impedance spectrum (EIS) measurements of half-cell indicate that the increased resistance of the positive electrode is suggested to be the root cause of power fading under high-rate discharge cycling, especially at high temperature. Abstract:The impact of transition metal Fe2+ on the dynamic solid electrolyte interface (SEI) in long‐life LiFePO4/Graphite batteries is comprehensively and quantitatively investigated. At elevated temperatures, dissolved Fe2+ tends to deposit on the anode, leading to an increase in organic components, particularly lithium alkyl carbonates, within the SEI. This process accelerates the consumption of active lithium and capacity degradation. The dissolution of iron from the cathode significantly contributes to the accelerated degradation of LiFePO4/Graphite batteries, particularly at elevated temperatures. However, a systematic understanding of the spatial distribution and impact of Fe ions on the dynamic solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer is lacking. In this study, a comprehensive and quantitative investigation is conducted into the effects of transition metals (TM) and thoroughly examined the interaction between dissolved Fe2+ and SEI in long‐life LiFePO4/Graphite pouch cells. The dissolved Fe in the electrolyte is more prone to deposition at the negative electrode at elevated temperatures, leading to an accelerated loss of active lithium. Additionally, Fe deposition on the SEI catalyzes the decomposition of EC and contributes to an increase in organic components, particularly lithium alkyl carbonates within the SEI, as evidenced by mass spectrometry titration (MST) analysis. Neutron imaging (NI) provides more insights into the impacts of dissolved Fe2+ on active lithium loss, SEI components, and electrolyte decomposition, resulting in greater macroscopic heterogeneity in the electrode regions of the cells. This research sheds light on the mechanisms underlying the degradation of LiFePO4/Graphite batteries and provides valuable insights for the development of strategies to mitigate capacity fade and enhance battery performance and longevity.

Abstract:In recent years, the lithium iron phosphate battery is widely used in the fields of electric vehicles and energy storage because of its high energy density, long cycle life and safety[1], but the existing battery technology was not enough to meet the requirements of electric vehicles[2]. So it is of great importance to research performances of battery. In this paper, the influence of different depth of discharge (DOD) on the cycle life of the battery was investigated. The specific research process is as follows, three kinds of LiFePO4 batteries of the same type were charged and discharged at three different discharge depths (30% DOD, 50% DOD and 100% DOD) under constant conditions of 40℃and 1C (1.3A), and the discharge capacity decay curve and decay rate curve were measured after a certain number of cycles. Discharge capacity decay curve and decay rate curve measured under different discharge depth are shown in Figure 1. As can be seen from the left graphic, the discharge capacity of the battery will have a slight increase in the early, this is because the battery anode material has not been fully activated during the initial cycle, as the cycle progresses, the electrolyte gradually penetrates into the interior of the electrode material, and the lithium ions smoothly migrate to the inside of the electrode material and undergo reversible deintercalation reaction, resulting in an increase in the capacity of the battery. In addition, At the beginning of the cycle, the depth of discharge has little effect on the capacity of the three groups of batteries. When the cycle continues, the discharge capacity of the LiFePO4 battery gradually decreased, the attenuation of battery capacity by the depth of discharge is more and more obvious. The right capacity fading rate curve shows that battery capacity decay rate remained the same at the beginning of the cycle. At this time, the influence of the battery capacity by depth of discharge is almost independent. After the initial cycle, the deeper the depth of discharge, the faster the cell capacity decays, and there is a significant the positive correlation between the depth of discharge and the decay rate of battery capacity. Due to the different depth of discharge, the internal structure of the electrode material will occur to different degrees of deterioration. Fig. 1 the discharge capacity decay curve and decay rate curve under different discharge depth. It can be seen from the above studies that the effect of the battery cycle life by depth of discharge is various in different cycle stages. In the early cycle, LiFePO4 battery capacity at different depth of discharge changes in the same law, indicating that the depth of discharge has no effect on the battery life in the early cycle. But as the cycle continues, the greater depth of discharge, the faster decay of battery capacity, the battery cycle life decline faster. Abstract:The overdischarge behaviors of LiFePO 4 , LiNiO 2 , and LiMn 2 O 4 are thoroughly studied in different overlithiation voltage limitations. The results showed that LiFePO 4 and LiMn 2 O 4 cathode materials show high structure stability under the overdischarge process to 1.0 V. The microstructure of LiNiO 2 is vulnerable to breakdown under the same testing condition. Fe-based olivine and Mn-based spinel cathode materials show better cyclic calendar life than that of Ni-based layered material. When an extreme overdischarge parameter (down to 0.0 V) is applied, all three samples experience an electrochemically driven irreversible solid-state amorphization process. Due to this overlithiation reaction, the host structure is totally destroyed. Therefore, it is harmful to experience deep overdischarge behaviors for most cathode materials.

Abstract:The active lithium loss in cathode materials is responsible for the capacity fading of LiFePO4/graphite battery at ambient temperature and low C-rate. In this work, we investigate the changes of lithium amount in four components involving cathode, anode, separator and electrolyte at different capacity loss levels when the LiFePO4/graphite batteries are cycled at a rate of 2C. The results show that the lithium content in the cathode decreases from 5.0% to 1.8% as the capacity retention decreases to 23.4%, while that in the graphite anode increases from 1.1% to 4.9%. Internal and intrinsic fading causes are investigated by subsequent analysis of their structures and morphologies. Besides, electrochemical testing results show that the loss of lithium ions for the cycled LiFePO4 electrodes is restorable due to the well-maintained olivine structure, while the cycled graphite anodes exhibit quick fading of charging/discharging specific capacity after long-term cycling. The capacity fading mechanism can be mainly ascribed to the active lithium consumption on graphite anode for solid electrolyte interface breaking/repairing and side reactions induced by graphite's inner structural deterioration.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) based on olivine LiFePO4 (LFP) offer long cycle/calendar life and good safety, making them one of the dominant batteries in energy storage stations and electric vehicles, especially in China. Yet scientists have a weak understanding of LFP cathode degradation, which restricts the further development of LFP materials and batteries. Here, we critically review reports on LFP cathode degradation with respect to different electric parameters (including C-rates, storage, and long cycling), mechanical stresses, and thermal fields. The detailed chemical and physical aspects of degradation mechanisms at various scales (i.e., from atomic to devices) and their causes are comprehensively summarized, and discussions of related concerns are provided in each section. We close with a systematic overview of LFP degradation research and mediation strategies, suggesting future directions for developing robust, safe LFP batteries with long cycle life.
Aging characteristics in graphite electrodes for LiFePO 4 batteries: Effect of design parameters and optimization

Abstract:The design parameters of lithium-ion batteries include electrode solid phase volume fraction, electrode thickness, electronic conductivity, separator ionic resistance, etc. Most of previous works focus on their effect on energy density and rate capacity. Here, their effect on the capacity fading is numerically investigated in terms of solid electrolyte interface (SEI), Li plating and loss of active material (LAM) in negative electrodes. Compared to the slight effect of positive electrode solid phase volume fraction, increasing negative electrode solid phase volume fraction aggravates all aging mechanisms at the electrode region near to separator. The Li plating at the interface between negative electrodes and separators aggravates with increasing negative electrode thickness or positive electrode thickness, but the region suffering from Li plating decreases for the former while increases for the latter. Increasing the electronic conductivity of negative electrodes and positive electrodes aggravates Li plating, and the latter also increases LAM and reduces SEI, but these effects becomes little after 10 S/m and 1 S/m, respectively. Whether the Li plating aggravates or alleviates with increasing the ionic resistance of separator is associated with positive particle size. Changing negative particle size is the most responsible for the aging, and the Li plating is the most sensitive to changing design parameters. A set of optimal design parameters is obtained, which reduces the battery aging by 20.76 %. The comprehensive comparison of design parameters is beneficial for overall improvement of battery performance.

Abstract:In this paper, a series of experiments were performed to investigate the thermal and electrical characteristics of a commercial lithium ion battery (LIB) over-discharged to failure. Specific information including voltage, current, capacity and battery surface temperature were measured and analyzed. According to the results, it is demonstrated that batteries behave obvious temperature rise during the over-discharge process and the temperature rise increase with the increasing charge rate. Besides, the LFP (lithium iron phosphate) exhibits gentler temperature rise than the NMC (nickel manganese cobalt oxide) battery in the over-discharge process. And the discharge rate is found there no huge effect on the lost capacity of battery when it is over-discharged to failure.

Abstract:With widespread applications for lithium-ion batteries in energy storage systems, the performance degradation of the battery attracts more and more attention. Understanding the battery’s long-term aging characteristics is essential for the extension of the service lifetime of the battery and the safe operation of the system. In this paper, lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries were subjected to long-term (i.e., 27–43 months) calendar aging under consideration of three stress factors (i.e., time, temperature and state-of-charge (SOC) level) impact. By means of capacity measurements and resistance calculation, the battery’s long-term degradation behaviors were tracked over time. Battery aging models were established by a simple but accurate two-step nonlinear regression approach. Based on the established model, the effect of the aging temperature and SOC level on the long-term capacity fade and internal resistance increase of the battery is analyzed. Furthermore, the storage life of the battery with respect to different stress factors is predicted. The analysis results can hopefully provide suggestions for optimizing the storage condition, thereby prolonging the lifetime of batteries.

Abstract:Fast charging compatibility is a desirable feature for batteries to shape a promising future in our rechargeable world. Enabling fast charging of advanced energy-dense Li-ion batteries for growing electric vehicle (EV) markets depends on the breakthrough of material chemistry and optimization of charging strategy. Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO 4 , or LFP) is a pivotal cathode material in state-of-the-art EV batteries due to the merits of high thermal stability, long cycle lifetime, and high-temperature performance. However, degradation-safety interactions of LFP-based Li-ion batteries under fast charging conditions and low temperatures remain elusive. In this study, we cycle LFP cells under different fast charging strategies and thermal environments to understand their effects on degradation pathways, where the capacity, voltage, temperature, coulombic inefficiency, internal resistance, and impedance spectroscopy are evaluated. Half-cell studies are implemented to assess electrode-level capacity retentions. Post-mortem analyses are conducted to reveal physicochemical changes in electrodes. Accelerating rate calorimeter tests are carried out to measure evolutions of cell-level thermal instabilities after fast charging tests. This research article highlights the significant roles of graphite-centric lithium plating and LFP-centric transition metal dissolution in driving substantial electrochemical degradations, suggesting that a mild low temperature does not necessarily reduce the LFP cell lifetime.

Abstract:The overcharge of the lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries usually leads to the sharp capacity fading and safety issues, especially under low temperature environment. Thus, investigating their root cause originated from the electrode materials is critical for the safety performance optimization and market promotion of the LiFePO4 batteries. In this work, the electrochemical/thermal behaviors of 18650 LiFePO4 batteries are investigated after overcharge under room and low temperature of 25°C and −20°C, respectively. The results demonstrate a decreased electrochemical performance and faster heating rate of the overcharged battery, particularly under harsh working environments such as high discharge rate and low temperature. Coupling with the analyses of the internal resistance, the crystal structure, and microstructure of the electrodes, the root cause is attributed to the damage of the crystal structure and microstructure, which reduce the electron/Li+ migrating capability and electrolyte diffusion/transfer efficiency. The decreased electrochemical/thermal performance of the overcharged lithium iron phosphate battery has been investigated, and the root cause is attributed to the crystal structure destruction and electrode materials aggregation.

Abstract:Coin cells are assembled with positive electrode of LiFePO4 commercial battery,and the accelerated cycle life test with two factors of temperature and discharge rate are conducted.The results indicate that in early aging,both capacity and power performances are firstly increased and then degraded.The electrochemical reaction is accelerated by high temperature,otherwise Li-ion diffusion coefficient seems not temperature-sensitive.The cells aging is accelerated by high discharge rate,which enhances the polarization.

Abstract:In the context of 'energy shortage', developing a novel energy-based power system is essential for advancing the current power system towards low-carbon solutions. As the usage duration of lithium-ion batteries for energy storage increases, the nonlinear changes in their aging process pose challenges to accurately assess their performance. This paper focuses on the study LiFeO4(LFP), used for energy storage, and explores their performance degradation mechanisms. Furthermore, it introduces common battery models and data structures and algorithms, which used for predicting the correlation between electrode materials and physical parameters, applying to state of health assessment and thermal warning. This paper also discusses the establishment of digital management system. Compared to conventional battery networks, dynamically reconfigurable battery networks can realize real-time monitoring of lithium-ion batteries, and reduce the probability of fault occurrence to an acceptably low level.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in electric vehicles to solve the problems of greenhouse gas emission. However, overcharging occurs due to the inconsistency of lithium-ion batteries, malfunction of charge control and inappropriate battery management. In order to solve the safety and cycle life problems of batteries suffering slight overcharging, quantitative analysis of the aging behavior, aging mechanisms and detection of slight overcharging cycling are studied in this manuscript. The results indicate that the cycle life of battery decreases linearly and exponentially with the upper cut-off voltage increasing when capacity and resistance are used as the threshold of the end of life respectively. The batteries have tolerance to slight overcharging with voltage lower than 4.6 V. The generated gas is not the main aging mechanism. Loss of active material is the main aging mechanism when the batteries are cycled at 4.4 V. Charging stress is the key factor triggering the loss of active material. The main aging mechanism becomes to be loss of lithium with the increase of voltage and cycle number due to the electrolyte oxidation, reduction and lithium plating. The differential voltage, coulombic efficiency and fast resistance increase are used as warming parameters of slight overcharging cycling.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) plating, triggered by fast charging and low temperature, will cause performance degradation and safety concern for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the strategically limited and controlled Li deposition might be advantageous for enhancing energy density. The detailed mechanism and regulation for performance improvement remain yet to be fully unexplored. This study meticulously modulates the overlithiation capacity to regulate the Li plating and probes its effects on the stability of high-capacity silicon/graphite (Si/Gr) electrodes through consecutive cycling and over the calendar aging period. In the Si/Gr electrode (20 wt% Si) with a 20% overlithiation degree exhibits enhanced reversible capacity in comparison to the pristine Si/Gr electrode. This improvement is attributed to precision-controlled Li deposition, the increased electrochemical utilization of Si and Gr above 0 V, and the additional intercalation/alloying reactions below 0 V, which decelerate the progression of capacity degradation and significantly boost the electrochemical performance of Si/Gr electrodes. Moreover, this tailored Si/Gr electrode with a 20% overlithiation degree attenuates the deterioration associated with calendar aging. This research not only elucidates the intricate interplay and mechanisms of Li plating on Si/Gr electrodes during overlithiation but also presents new understanding and approach to advance the LIBs' performance and extend their service lifespan.

Abstract:Constant current charging and discharging is widely used for nowadays commercial Lithium (Li) ion batteries (LIBs) in applications of portable electronic devices and electric vehicles. However, the main battery degradation mechanism during constant current cycling remains unclear. To unveil the aging mechanism during constant current cycling, in this work, electrochemical cycling, real-time temperature monitoring, and operando electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of a fresh and an aged battery have been carried out. The results of the incremental capacity analysis (ICA) analysis indicate that polarization is the main reason for the capacity fading during operation. Besides, post-mortem analysis of the electrodes reveals that the formation of solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) and cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) is the leading cause of electrodes degradation. The interface formation and evolution over cycling (including thickening and chemical variation) leads to continuous loss of active materials. The presence of SEI and CEI also increases the impedance for charge transfer and transport and reduces the kinetics of electrochemical Li-ion redox on the electrodes. Moreover, the irreversible Li loss to Li plating and SEI formation has been quantified, which accounts for 16.8% of the total Li in the battery. This work provides a mechanistic understanding of the degradation mechanism of commercial LIBs and guides the rational design of the commercial battery and inspires the design of charging and discharging protocols toward enhanced cycling stability and prolonged cycle life.

Comprehensive Investigation of a Slight Overcharge on Degradation and Thermal Runaway Behavior of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Overcharge is a hazardous abuse condition that has dominant influences on cell performance and safety. This work, for the first time, comprehensively investigates the impact of different overcharge degrees on degradation and thermal runaway behavior of lithium-ion batteries. The results indicate that single overcharge has little influence on cell capacity, while it severely degrades thermal stability. Degradation mechanisms are investigated by utilizing the incremental capacity-differential voltage and relaxation voltage analyses. During the slight overcharge process, the conductivity loss and the loss of lithium inventory always occur; the loss of active material starts happening only when the cell is overcharged to a certain degree. Lithium plating is the major cause for the loss of lithium inventory, and an interesting phenomenon that the arrival time of the dV/dt peak decreases linearly with the increase of the overcharge degree is found. The cells with different degrees of overcharge exhibit a similar behavior during adiabatic thermal runaway. Meanwhile, the relationship between sudden voltage drop and thermal runaway is further established. More importantly, the characteristic temperature of thermal runaway, especially the self-heating temperature (T1), decreases severely along with overcharging, which means that a slight overcharge severely decreases the cell thermal stability. Further, post-mortem analysis is conducted to investigate the degradation mechanisms. The mechanism of the side reactions caused by a slight overcharge on the degradation performance and thermal runaway characteristics is revealed.
Capacity Fading Mechanism of the Commercial 18650 LiFePO4-Based Lithium-Ion Batteries: an in Situ Time-Resolved High-Energy Synchrotron XRD Study

Abstract:In situ high-energy synchrotron XRD studies were carried out on commercial 18650 LiFePO4 cells at different cycles to track and investigate the dynamic, chemical, and structural changes in the course of long-term cycling to elucidate the capacity fading mechanism. The results indicate that the crystalline structural deterioration of the LiFePO4 cathode and the graphite anode is unlikely to happen before capacity fades below 80% of the initial capacity. Rather, the loss of the active lithium source is the primary cause for the capacity fade, which leads to the appearance of inactive FePO4 that is proportional to the absence of the lithium source. Our in situ HESXRD studies further show that the lithium-ion insertion and deinsertion behavior of LiFePO4 continuously changed with cycling. For a fresh cell, the LiFePO4 experienced a dual-phase solid-solution behavior, whereas with increasing cycle numbers, the dynamic change, which is characteristic of the continuous decay of solid solution behavior, is obvious. The unpredicted dynamic change may result from the morphology evolution of LiFePO4 particles and the loss of the lithium source, which may be the cause of the decreased rate capability of LiFePO4 cells after long-term cycling.
